Ask the Man Behind the Legend - Cowboy Neal

Roblimo posted more than 13 years ago | from the jon-pater-revealed dept. 234

After many reader requests, we're finally getting around to interviewing the famed, mysterious CowboyNeal. He's more than a poll response, you know. He's the guy you go to if you have problems with your Slashdot user account -- or if you just generally need a cheerful face on a day you're feeling a little down. But who is the "real" CowboyNeal? Here's your chance to find out. Post questions below. We'll send 10 of the highest-moderated ones to Da Man and run his answers as soon as he gets them back to us.

From what I've seen, the cap is 50 even for accounts that existed before the cap. I used to have a couple hundred karma, then for a few weeks there was a phenomenon where it only went down and could never increase, but it stayed around 200. Then one day, I looked, and it had magically changed to 50.

The name Cowboy Neal comes from a Grateful Dead song, The Other One. It refers to Neal Cassady.

jd (1658) | more than 13 years ago | (#437429)

I was at 718 when the cap was set. It really irritated me, as it ruined my campaign to get +10 per week. :)

Seriously, linear karma is stupid. IMHO, we need a 2-D or 3-D karma system, to represent the different types of post and style.

eg: Someone with +50 might be a very funny poster, but lousy on facts or a troll at times. By having something like +50/-25/+4, with the first being "interesting/informitive", the second being "funny", and the third being "social", that would give you a much better picture of the poster.

Summer 1983 (3)

MoNickels (1700) | more than 13 years ago | (#437430)

It was the summer of 1983 and I was on the beach on Majorca, two weeks of holiday in between shuttling tourist groups back and forth from Akron and Paris. That was my cover job, anyway. My real job, the one that bought the house in Majorca, in fact, was mule, hauling meth from the States in boxes marked "feminine napkins" and bringing Chinese "tourists" with fake papers back from Corsica.

On my last trip, the one before retirement, I was busted. A lanky dude with hair like Kris Kristofferson, what must have been a 15-gallon hat, and dusty iguana-skin boots was sitting there, pants at his ankles, using my beach house toilet and pointing a sawed-off shotgun at me in the doorway.

"Don't move, dude. And don't drink the water in Guayaquil."

My question: was that you, Cowboy Neal?

ragnar (3268) | more than 13 years ago | (#437434)

I think it would be very cool if all slashdot submissions went into a queue where the community could decide what news should be posted. The community ownership of the news that already exist would only improve in my opinion if you did this, and your moderation/meta-moderation system already seem adequate to accomplish the task. Would you consider opening up /. further with this sort of change?

I'm sure that when you first became associated with Slashdot, you had ideas (maybe fantasies is a better term) about what /. would be like in times to come. Did it even come close? Do you think back and try to identify some singularity, some single moment when you chose Door #1 and in retrospect would now go with Door #2?

Why do you get out of bed in the morning? What drives you to get up and go out into the hard, cruel world and face the legions of trolls and misanthropes you know you're going to have to face during the day? What's the motivation? (Hey, could be worse: I could be asking this of Katz!)

I just looked at mine, still triple digits.

Re:Karma? (2)

georgeha (43752) | more than 13 years ago | (#437480)

Well, for a new account the current limit is 50 kharma.

For accounts that were in effect before the kharma count was instituted, you kpet your kharma, but you can only go down, ie, I have a triple digit kharma, but if I get modded down enough, my kharma would drop and it would never increase, until I got below 50.

Anecdotally, siggy had a 700+ kharma, IIRC.

the kharma cap is a favor to us (5)

georgeha (43752) | more than 13 years ago | (#437481)

really, the Slashdot crew is thinking of us when they gave us a kharma cap.

You probably remember the first time you got a positive moderation, it felt pretty good, like, Wow someone likes my work.

When you past 10 kharma points, it was nice, not as good as the first point though.

When you got your first +5 moderation, you were on a high, though not as much as your first points.

When you got 26, and could post with the +1 if you wished, it was special, but still, not as good as the first time.

Face it, kharma is a drug. It's never as much fun as your first time, and if there was no cap, you'd keep setting inane goals (when I get to triple digits I'll stop, I'll have all the kharma I'll need, when I get 200 I'll stop...) to feed your kharma jones, and end up spending all your time reading Slashdot and gathering kharma, trying to recreate that first kharma high.

That becomes ugly real fast, you become a bona-fide kharma-whore. Trust me, Taco has seen the bad sides of severe kharma-whoredom, and he is thinking of us when he instituted the cap.

caffeineboy (44704) | more than 13 years ago | (#437482)

WHY I can't tell you, but for those of you non hippie-music fans out there, cowboy neal is probably a Grateful Dead reference from the song That's it for the Other One [] first published on the album "Anthem of the Sun" (1968).

"...there was cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to never ever land."

It seems that people think that this is a neal cassidy/ken kesey furthur acid bus reference.

Re:Karma? (2)

technos (73414) | more than 13 years ago | (#437494)

Nope. When they capped karma, they just made it so no positive moderation could be done to accounts with more than 50 karma. They didn't shave karma off the stack, they just made it so you couldn't accrue any more. Positive moderations do nothing, but negative ones bite you. I could score +5 with four +1's and a -1, and only the -1 would have any effect.

When it was capped, I had right around 250, and have managed to dwindle it down to 212 since. I figure if I keep up my regular rate of posts, I'll make it down to 50 sometime in March, 2004.

Super Awesome Feature Idea for Slashdot (1)

Ace905 (163071) | more than 13 years ago | (#437550)

As Cowboy Neal, what do you think of this idea:

Slashdot allows people the opportunity to offer free web-hosting space. When a story is posted on slashdot, a script automatically uploads the link(s) the story refers to, to a whole slew of alternate mirror sites provided by slashdots users.

Then, a new icon appears beside the new stories which lists a link to the mirror sites. Anyone offering space can give you an account which has access to only x-amount of space.

This way, we slashdot lovers don't have to wait for 3 days to read a story, we can simply go to 1 of a hundred mirror sites when the main site has been slashdotted. Having a large number of volunteered mirror sites also ensures no one mirror site loses too much bandwidth.

Dumb question (1)

ortholattice (175065) | more than 13 years ago | (#437563)

Maybe this is off-topic but I don't know where else to ask. (Somehow I don't think it would qualify as an Ask Slashdot article...)

Quite often I see links (on mainstream sites, newsgroups, and slashdot itself) to slashdot articles. The problem is that most of the time they also bring over the entire discussion associated with the article, which is a problem if I'm at home on a 28.8k line. So I have to wait 5 minutes to download 1/2 megabyte of responses when all I want to do is glimpse at the main article. Is there a simple trick to just read the article only, when I encounter a link like this?

(This has nothing to do with reading the main slashdot pages, where of course I have my preferences set as I want them.)

Do you really exist? (2)

Re:really opening up (2)

blueg3 (192743) | more than 13 years ago | (#437582)

Slashdot might not be the fastest source for news now, but if items had to go into a moderation queue to be voted on to the page, it would be far worse. Only the die-hards who sorted through the queue (which, I imagine, would be unbearably large with lots of duplicates) would know the news immediately. The rest of us would have to wait until whatever the vote-time was or when the vote limit was reached. (That should take at least a day to allow for an accurate vote, right?)

  • User score tiers (and a rarely-used Top Ten Users)
  • A chatterbox (that mainly links to the Java and Javascript chat)

Another feature that might be nice is allowing users to rate posts so that we can skim for the good ones. That's pretty subjective, though.

A single question in two parts:
  1. Boxers or Briefs?
  2. Left or Right?

Boxers or Briefs?

Hey Cowboy Neil: (1)

atrowe (209484) | more than 13 years ago | (#437589)

I keep trying to check out the nudie section on your webcam site and it never works. What gives?

Surprise: CowboyNeal was not in the Village People (1)

I watched that VH-1 behind the music on them and I never saw CowboyNeal once. []

A User Info slashbox? (5)

update() (217397) | more than 13 years ago | (#437594)

Like a lot of people, I bet, I frequently look at my user info page to see if there have been responses to my posts, and what moderations I have received. Would it be possible to provide a Slashbox with that information on the main page?

It matters, in a way (1)

Having a high kharma is kind of like having an 8 inch (that's 24 cm to you UKians) penis.

You can't show a lot of people, but word gets around, and people are impressed, heh heh heh

Wow man, I apologize (2)

You think I would have learned after I got my ass kicked laughing at Benjamin Dover.

Can you not give trolls accounts? (5)

Hairy_Potter (219096) | more than 13 years ago | (#437598)

I see far too many obvious trolls being given accounts.

Just today I saw a new poster, Patrick McCrotch. Now, seriously, Pat McCrotch, do you think that's real?

For the sake of Slashdot, please stop the spread of trolls, and don't give them accounts. Please work with the FBI to track down the trolls that are ruining Slashdot, and have them be quietly captured in the dark of the night and locked in a warm cell with Christina Ricci styled nymphomaniacal fembots until they die of dehydration!

does anyone else think of gay cowboys eating pudding when the name cowboyneal is mentioned, or is that just me?

I've been following CowboyNeal's career for years, reading everything he writes, watching all of his movies and eating all of his cooking. Now I finally have a chance to ask him the question that's been burning me up inside: What's Taco really like?

Seriously, can you give us a breakdown of how much time each editor spends actually reading the site they nominally run? Like, time spent clicking on user comments?

if I had to guess, I'd say Tom Wolfe. Being that one computer is Kesey (Ken Kesey), in my warped mind it makes sense... Ken Kesey, Merry Pranksters... (think to The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests).... kick ass book...

Shame on you. If you think that's the secret to life then I suggest that you get your casket ready. You'll never get extra lives with that code. This is what you need: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, start. you've got an extra b, a in there.

Cowboy Neal: (1)

Two questions:

One, how did you come up with your nickname. Is there any signifigance behind it or is it just something you came up with that sounded cool? If any other readers know this one, please feel free to fill me in

Second, a prominent figure (no puns intended) in the public eye, you undoubtedly have to deal with a lot of flames from immature readers. I'm sure you've heard your share of geek jokes or fat jokes during your employment at Slashdot. I think that I would tend to take that kind of thing as a personal assault and it would affect my already fragile self esteem. How do you deal the with lamers and flame warriors that are so persistant on this site?

Thanks for your time.

Look you,

If you don't like my name, I'll be happy to let you know where you can go.

From my user info:

Yes, I am of Irish descent. And yes, that is my real name.

If you're thinking of being clever and coming up with some kind of witty joke about it please keep in mind the following:

a) I've already heard that one, and

b) You're not very clever.

I'll be happy to fax you a copy of my birth certificate if you'd like.
