Trolling Al Qaeda... For Peace?

Soulskill posted more than 2 years ago | from the forty-second-godwin-bridage dept.

The Internet 207

The Mister Purple writes "There is a small initiative underway to combat Islamic militant recruiting on the Internet... by trolling them. Quoting the article: 'The program, called Viral Peace, seeks to occupy the virtual space that extremists fill, one thread or Twitter exchange at a time. Shahed Amanullah, a senior technology adviser to the State Department and Viral Peace's creator, tells Danger Room he wants to use "logic, humor, satire, [and] religious arguments, not just to confront [extremists], but to undermine and demoralize them." Think of it as strategic trolling, in pursuit of geopolitical pwnage.' So, does this mean that I'm promoting peace when I post YouTube comments?"

Confusion is a great tactic. Make them so mad they can't think straight, and you reduce their total effectiveness.

Even logical argument wont work due to cognitive dissonance and a desire to hold on to your values despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Satire would probably just rile them up more.

Well, I've been doing precisely this for years, actually. In fact, just using your brain properly pisses these people off incredibly efficiently.

Satire would probably just rile them up more.

Been there, done that. [wikipedia.org] This stuff is pretty much work in progress.

Actually I think if they just got laid once in a while it'd reduce their effectiveness. Unfortunately for them their belief system makes them think the only way it's going to happen is to get married or get martyred.
Given their apparently poor respect of women, the former isn't likely without some kind of arranged marriage.

Religious groups understand that children must be indoctrinated at a young age in order for anything they are told to stick (be it God, aliens or some other folklore). No amount of rationalizing will convince someone that their religion or beliefs are flawed. Extend this to coca-cola - people won't change their beliefs (in this instance, they wouldn't drink Pepsi).

You won't stop this fanaticism with logic or humor.

You are definitely saying that if you make somebody feel like an idiot, then he won't want to be recruited to blow you up to bits.

I am confident that if I look through books on how to win friends and influence people, then somewhere in bold letters will be the suggestion to humiliate your enemies until world peace arrives.

Yeah, I think that is it. There are too many wars due to lack of humiliation.

Re:Right (4, Interesting)

SoftwareArtist (1472499) | more than 2 years ago | (#40692071)

You know the religious fanatics who stand in the middle of college campuses shouting at everyone passing by that the end of the world is coming, and they're all going to Hell, and generally making fools of themselves? And you know how people laugh at them, or shout back at them, or make jokes about them to the crowd, or point out loudly what absurd fools they are?

That's exactly what they want to happen.

You see, they aren't targeting those people who stand around and laugh at them. But somewhere in the crowd is someone who feels sorry for them. Someone who knows perfectly well they're a religious fanatic, but that still doesn't give people the right to laugh at them. And so afterward that person will go up and talk to the religious fanatic, just to be polite, just to say, "I wasn't one of the people laughing at you, and I don't approve of them doing it."

And that is who they're really targeting. That person who is trying to be polite, and is off their guard, and who suddenly finds the religious fanatic is actually a friendly person who can talk intelligently and doesn't sound like a fanatic at all anymore. By laughing at the fanatic, you helped them to lure in the person they were really after, and gave them a chance to give the real recruiting pitch.

Trolling fanatics may be fun, but it can easily have the opposite effect from what you intend.

Pissing them off in the first place is what got them riled up and on the jihad bandwagon. Might as well poke them with a stick - would be just as effective as "strategic trolling".

How these dumbtards (aka 'senior technology adviser to the State Department') get into politics and positions of power is the real evil that needs to be dealt with...

Turing word: discord

Re:Right (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40691323)

right. internet discord.

which is essentially sows distrust of everything that comes from TV, Radio and the Internet.

in other words, you create in the other person the sentiment that IT'S ALL BULLSHIT.

then they're drawn to someone who strikes down that FUD, in person, face to face.

someone local.

then you end up with exactly what you seeked to defuse in the first place.

committed, dispersed, independent cells who aren't reachable through mass communications.

good job fuck head.

Re:Right (2)

causality (777677) | more than 2 years ago | (#40691901)

which is essentially sows distrust of everything that comes from TV, Radio and the Internet.

That would be an improvement. Why, somthing like widespread critical thinking might emerge! The world is full of people who benefit by being dishonest.

in other words, you create in the other person the sentiment that IT'S ALL BULLSHIT.

All? No. Just most of it. Usually this is in the "bought and paid for" sense of advertisements. Half-truths are always a popular one as well, because on the surface they seem legitimate unless you scrutinize how they're being used. It tends to fool people who are otherwise smart except that they're naive.

then they're drawn to someone who strikes down that FUD, in person, face to face.

What would lead them to believe this person is any more truthful than what they read? At some point they'd have to learn to test the truth of information they are told to believe. Otherwise we're back again to the naive people, the ones who (no matter how high their IQs) get suckered by charm and charisma. Or they might get suckered by thinking those who look you in the eye are automatically more truthful than someone who writes a post online, even though meeting a single liar is enough to falsify that notion.

then you end up with exactly what you seeked to defuse in the first place

No the real problem here is that both government and corporations find it highly desirable to have malleable, docile populace who don't question too much or think too critically. Politicians think that's just great and so do advertisers. They'd really rather not rock that boat. That's why they want to counter one kind of propaganda with another kind of propaganda instead of teaching people how to recognize propaganda and identify ulterior agendas.

Besides, you frame this in terms of "distrust". I went along with that in order to respond to you more easily, but I don't view it that way at all. It's not about trust or distrust or mistrust. It's about skepticism. Healthy skepticism is a good thing. If you aren't willing to go wherever the evidence and reason leads, then we're moving away from skepticism and towards mistrust. That's the difference.

Slashdot's reallyghone down hill.... (-1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40690835)

How well do I remember the blood on the walls from the constant fighting that went on at home. It was usually Dad’s blood. Mom had thrown an object and cut him with it. As children, we would scream and cry in terror. My parents drank almost every weekend and the latter parts of the day!

We had a large family, too large. My Dad’s paycheck barely made ends meet. Food was scarce, alcohol was abundant and fear was my constant companion. Finally, my Dad had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized. He would escape on weekends and come home. Sometimes he would do strange things, like set the house on fire. Our mom spent a lot of time away from home trying to find herself at the bottom of a bottle. Since my parents were away, my older siblings and I learned how to take care of the smaller ones. I remember beatings I didn’t deserve and welts that went deep in my flesh.

On one occasion, I questioned my mother’s decision. She was so angry; she beat me with a wooden stick. When morning dawned and I got ready for school, I had black and blue marks all over my torso. I put on long sleeves to cover the bruises. “What are you doing,” Mom asked? “I am trying to conceal the bruises, “I confessed. “Don’t do that, I want people to see that I beat you!” So off to school I went covered in the marks from my beating. On other occasions, I was refused water because I was a bed wetter. Most of us kids were because of the traumatic life we lived. Even when I was sick, I was refused water. So I resorted to the commode for a cool drink, as a result I contracted Hepatitis A. For thirty days, I laid in a bed sick, weak and hungry, unable to eat.

Not long after I recovered from my bout with Hepatitis, a beating from my father almost killed me. Shortly after that I became pregnant. My mother sent me packing and told me not to come back. Nine months later I had a baby girl. She was lovely with huge brown eyes and tiny little rosebud lips. In a few shorts months I was pregnant again, which led to an illegal abortion that was not only barbaric but also, very dangerous. I barely made it through.

Later, Marilynn, my little girl was taken away from me because of my drunkenness and drug use. I became pregnant again, this time I tried to terminate the pregnancy by throwing myself down thirty concrete steps in a warehouse where I worked. I was given a “therapeutic abortion” after seeing two physiatrists.

My life was a mess, I would do so many drugs that I would wake up in strange places, bruised, raped and at times left to die. Along with the drugs, I began to get deeper into witchcraft and meditate. I would invite strange spirits to come inside my body and empower me. I was possessed by more then ten demons.

I got married in an attempt to make some sense out of life. We were both lost and could not help each other. It was pitiful. When I told him I was carrying his child, he sent me for an abortion. I wanted the child and fought to save it. He won. I went and terminated the pregnancy. That sent me over the edge. Literally, I became hopelessly addicted to cocaine. I was becoming increasingly suicidal. I was living with the memories of sexual abuse, memories that I could not shake. I was sure my inability to say, “No” to sex was because I was forced to do it against my will as a young girl. With the memories from my childhood haunting me, and a lack of love from my parents, the abortions, the drugs and all that I had done, I was a “train wreck” waiting to happen.

Until, one day a woman named Linda Smith invited me to church. I was a drug addict who was dying of Hepatitis. I was loveless, lonely, hopelessly and my days were numbered. After refusing Linda’s invitations, I decided to take her up on her offer. That night, I sat in the church with demons in my head tormenting me and threatening me. I wanted to run but my legs were like jelly. I heard the preacher talk about a man named Jesus who loved the unlovely and forgave the unforgivable. “Would you like to know this Jesus,” He asked?

I took the longest walk of my life. I fought the sprits that fought against my chance to be free, by getting up and walking down the aisle to the front of the church. What happened next was purely “supernatural.” The power of God went through me like liquid lava. It cleared my liver of the Hepatitis and delivered me from addiction. I was healed of mental illness and depression. I fell to the floor and laid there for what seemed like hours, it was barely three minutes. When I got up, I was a different person. The addiction was on its way out, my mind was clearing and I was on my way to complete recovery.

His name is Jesus!! He saved me, healed me, freed me and gave me a new life. That was over twenty years ago And I am still telling people that He is Alive and He is a God of Love and second chances. I have NEVER BEEN THE SAME!

You can also have this wonderful ‘supernatural” experience with Jesus Christ, by simply calling on His Name. He wants to set you free and heal your broken heart.

While I'm all for trolling Muslims

Never would have guessed that. You seem to be part of a different trolling campaign than the one promoted by the article though.

It's best to troll everywhere, just to make sure.

Waste of Time (4, Insightful)

it never worked on [Republicans, Democrats] (delete as per preference) so why should it work on fundies?

NOT A WASTE!!!!! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40691223)

It's not a waste!!!! It just needs to be done effectively!

How do we encourage enough trolling to make this effective? Sure, this is a hobby many giddy internet goblins love to participate in, but we need a little boost gain to jump this up to effective levels. Obviously, we must, as a society, LEGALLY justify CONFISCATING Bill Gates' uncountably vast WEALTH to fund this much needed public good. The fact that this man has been allowed to keep his BILLIONS when there is much needed trolling of islamists to be done is a SIN and we are ALL condemned to HELL for it!

Why do you say, "fundies"? Is it because humiliation always persuades you? Is it a good use of time, when we do it to moderates, libertarians, scientists, pacifists, and the politically disenfranchised?

Because too many of you all are Christians, and that's the limp-wristed version of Islam, still crazy and fucked up but send poor people armed with advanced tech to fight your fights instead of blowing your self up to do it.

Fuck the lot of you. You religidiots are all losers. Fuck you.

State-sponsored trolling is never a good idea. The police should investigate crimes and with some measure also attempt to prevent them. The purpose of intelligence agencies is to gather intelligence. Neither of this involves trolling around on online forums.

and do the obvious thing: stop bombing random countries in the middle east every four to eight years. Anyone whos read Osama Bin Ladens demand list knows that most of his argument is structured around the fact that we bomb indiscriminately most of the middle east, topple their governments, kill their nationals and foreign nationals with drones, prop up malevolent dictators and generally leave the countries we've "touched" a complete wreck. trolling for peace will be nearly as effective as the like button was for Kony2012.

the state department understands quite well we need al quaeda in some form, hence a plan thats effectively designed to bolster recruitment. Without a boogeyman we have no pretext to assert regional dominance, and that would mean we would have to double down on our iran rhetoric and face whats largely believed to be a capable opponent in a war no one would support. Everything since the carter foreign policy doctrine has completely screwed this country into ensuring we pound the snot out of some unsuspecting foreign nation in the gulf once a presidency, its just that we're running out of little guys to fight that dont have big teeth, or allies that simply wont tolerate the action.

Yes and no. You're about half right. The thing about bin Laden was that he wanted us out of there so he could re-establish a caliphate and bring the region backwards about a thousand years. It wasn't all freedom and non-interference with him. Not saying that US intervention is always, or even often a good thing in that region, but bin Laden was dangerous to everybody, especially the Muslims in the area.

Not trolling, counter-trolling (3, Insightful)

erice (13380) | more than 2 years ago | (#40691807)

I think people reading too much into the description of the effort as "trolling".

Trolling on Usenet and sites like Slashdot is about provoking people who are otherwise engaged in reasoned, rational, discussions into flaming.

The Al Qaeda elements are presumably using weakly supported but not obviously wrong statements written to appeal to the emotions of would-be recruits and convince them that the irrational is reasonable. In other words, these elements are themselves trolling.

The counter would be to either reveal the trolls as nut jobs or provoke them to revealing that themselves. Posting fictitious but not obviously wrong arguments yourself is probably not the way to go about this.

Black Parrot (19622) | more than 2 years ago | (#40692051)

Trolling on Usenet and sites like Slashdot is about provoking people who are otherwise engaged in reasoned, rational, discussions into flaming.

Actually it's about pushing people's buttons, and it works best on people who take themselves waaay too seriously.

You troll people who are inclined to jerk their knees, not those who are inclined toward reasoned, rational discussions.

Shahed Amanullah, a senior technology adviser to the State Department and Viral Peace's creator, tells Danger Room he wants to use "logic, humor, satire, [and] religious arguments, not just to confront [extremists], but to undermine and demoralize them."

Kind of like when Mel Brooks made fun of the Nazis.
