Microsoft Surface, Meet Apple iSurface

Unknown Lamer posted more than 2 years ago | from the apple-sues-ms-for-pre-infringement dept.

Input Devices 201

theodp writes "Responding to Microsoft's Windows 8 efforts, Apple CEO Tim Cook insisted in late April that combining a tablet and a notebook would be like converging a toaster and a refrigerator. But a patent application submitted by Apple last year — and made public Tuesday morning — proposes marrying a tablet and a keyboard to create 'a true laptop alternative,' which GeekWire notes looks a lot like Microsoft Surface (comparison pic). In its patent filing, Apple describes various ways that a tablet's cover could be used as an I-O device — as a tactile-feedback keyboard ('word processing and email become much more efficient'), to display additional output, as a touchpad replacement, and even to receive stylus input. 'The experience,' claims Apple, 'is even better in some ways than the laptop experience.'"

But...but...it's an APPLE screen with a keyboard! That mean's it's magical, revolutionary, innovative, wonderful, stunning, and powerful! Why do you hate magic?

The only ones that talk constant about "magical", "revolutionary", "innovative", ... - with the exception of a marketing movie when a new product has introduced - are people that are riding the iHate wave. I don't see a lot of normal people talking in such terms.

And then for some innovation is synonym for coming up with something completely knew or unheard of. If you take that as criteria, there aren't a lot companies that 'innovate' anymore.

Sometimes I have the feeling that hating the brand is as popular as owning something from that brand. It also remind me of a saying we have in Flanders "What the heart is full of, the mouth flows over..." .

People hate Apple for a lot of very good reasons. Abuse of the legal and patent systems, pretending to be police, locked systems and markets, proprietary connectors, proprietary protocols, greed, and general corporate dickishness. The blind followers tend to be fairly annoying, as well as those who recognize most of these points, but still buy their products, ignoring that in the long run the direction that Apple is taking is bad for everyone but Apple. I wish more people 'hated' Apple; they might take notice and change their ways.

I just wish there was another laptop manufacturer around that actually cared about screen resolution. I keep finding things with terabyte hard drives, quad-core processors... and 768 vertical pixels. If you want high resolution portables, Apple is really your only option.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (1)

Nerdfest (867930) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877275)

Yeah, it's sad. I'd buy one in a second if everything else about the company wasn't so bad. I'm hoping this shows other manufacturers that it's worth it to make them and the price of those screens is driven down a bit.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (5, Insightful)

jkflying (2190798) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877319)

You obviously didn't look very hard, I've seen hi-res Thinkpads, Dells and Sonys. Of course, it isn't in the general consumer stuff, but rather in the high end. IMHO 1920x1080 on a 15" screen is dense enough dpi beyond which it doesn't make a difference... and beyond that the graphics power needed to push around all of those extra pixels gets unreasonable for the marginal benefit gained.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (3, Informative)

Nemyst (1383049) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877549)

Dislike them all you wish, but Sony's VAIO Z has a 1080p screen on a 13.1" body. There's also Samsung's Series 9 ultrabook, 900p in a 13.3" frame.

And then if you want bigger, there's plenty of choice from companies like Sager that offer 1080p on a 15.6" frame.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (2)

MacGyver2210 (1053110) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877607)

My ASUS from four years ago has 1920 x 1200, which is plenty of resolution for me. My HP from three years ago has 1650 x 1050 which is also a fine resolution. My ASUS from two years ago has 1920 x 1200 as well...

What exactly was so hard to find for you? Have you heard of NewEgg? It's rather simple to find a device by screen resolution. Just don't go to Best Buy and ask for their cheapest computer(which, at $379, still had bigger than 768 vertical res, Samsung something-or-other).

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40877657)

Part of the reason Apple is the only option is they buy almost all of the available components to produce their innovations, in this case a screen. It's hard for competitors to build a competing product, at least quickly, if there aren't any parts available to build it.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (0)

Uh, I've been running on a 1920x1080 @ 16" screen for the past 2 years (a Sony Viao laptop). Welcome to the 21st century. I have a hard time even looking up close to see individual pixels.

Cost about $1,300 CDN at the time. Comes with BD-RW drive, standard ports, 3 USB, VGA, HDMI, an a Radeon gfx card.

People hate Apple for a lot of very good reasons.

People hate Apple for the same reason they hate different races and cultures: ignorance, prejudice, bigotry; they hate by default and then try to justify their prejudice, but those shallow justifications are usually very easy to argue against and see through.

Abuse of the legal and patent systems,

Every company in the IT industry does this, except in most cases they threaten the little defenseless guy rather than challenging the big fish. Your conception that going after the big guys is worse than bullying the little ones only shows your prejudice.

pretending to be police

What?

locked systems and markets

All companies that build platforms do that.

proprietary connectors

Due to lack of efficient standard alternatives. 11 years after the iPod and there is yet to be a standard connector that carries USB, RS-232, power, and analog A/V signals in a way that makes it trivial to implement accessories. Apple follows standards whenever they can, but not when that gets in the way of functionality or usability.

proprietary protocols

What?

greed

What?

and general corporate dickishness

Elaborate.

The blind followers tend to be fairly annoying, as well as those who recognize most of these points, but still buy their products, ignoring that in the long run the direction that Apple is taking is bad for everyone but Apple. I wish more people 'hated' Apple; they might take notice and change their ways.

If you were truly unbiased you would have realized that the annoying crowd is on both camps (you are the example of the annoying crowd on the non-Apple camp spreading misinformation), so hating the enemy camp because some crowd members are annoying while ignoring that the same is true on your side is quite retarded. Apple isn't doing anything other companies don't do -- you hate them because what they do is high profile, they go after the big fish, and you are too shallow and hateful to see beyond that.

That may be shocking to you, but the kind of prejudice involved is exactly the same -- people hate a perspective that they've never actually tried to empathize with, and they justify that hate by resorting to straw man fallacies to inaccurately represent the position of the parties that they hate. While in their mind or within their circlejerk that may work, it doesn't stand a chance against anyone who argues rationally.

I post as AC now because Slashdot moderation and post quotas are retarded, making it less efficient to challenge the masses as a registered user, especially if your karma is below 0.

dufuq did I just read? How can anyone compare hating Apple to Racism? I really don't like Apple stuff, but I have a reason. I have how overpriced it is, I hate how locked down it is, I hate how Apple abuses the legal system like suing everyone and the time they had people pose as cops. Mostly I hate having to use iTunes to sync any music/video to the player as I don't want to have to sort through my full library just to add a few songs because doing it that way is way slower and less covenant then just copying a few folders and moving them directly.

The only good thing I can say is that everyone has some sort of iPod dock for everything and it would be nice to have an alarm clock that can connect to my MP3 player.

Yeah, true. But what I don't understand is why *every* other competitor out there does the same, in a probably worse manner even, but they don't get even a fraction of the hate that Apple receives. Proprietary protocols? Closed systems? Sure, use Windows. Just don't expect to use IMAP with their mail program. Or SSH into your machine. Locked market? Microsoft paved the way with a closed Xbox marketplace, years ago, yet for some reason it's accpetable for consoles, not for phones.

So why are we discussing Apple and Microsoft's "tablet with detachable keyboard" instead of Asus Padfone or Ubuntu for Android, both of which are genuinely innovative?

So why are we discussing Apple and Microsoft's "tablet with detachable keyboard" instead of Asus Padfone or Ubuntu for Android, both of which are genuinely innovative?

Because this is Slashdot where "editors" rather post "news" that give people their daily "ranting" fix and also because it is commercial interesting. As an editor you know that posting this kinda of articles will get your number of page hits to the roof in no time.

I see it also on other sites where they have a group of followers that have a particularly negative feeling against one of multiple brands and where you can follow some metrics. Post a article of "hated" product X or brand Y and you will see the number of comments come in in a bigger rate then the other articles.

Pro or contra, we are all getting played for commercial motives.

If it would be me we would have less Apple articles, less Microsoft articles, less Raspberry pi advertisement, but more stuff for nerds like the Asus padfone or Ubuntu for Android... .

I don't see a lot of added value of this kind of news where the general discussion that follows how we hate Apple, how we hate Apple users, etc.

Re:It's a screen with a keyboard... (1)

andy16666 (1592393) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877589)

I have to go and disagree with you there about Ubuntu. Big Ubuntu fan, but certainly not innovative. Been using Ubuntu since 2006 and it's become a new struggle with each new release to find a software combination that works on each of my machines. I'd love to say the new Unity interface is innovative but it doesn't even run stable on two of my machines and more importantly it provides me with dramatically less functionality than my previous desktop environment. Even Xfce is miles above unity in terms of raw usability.

And Android, innovative? Come on! It's an answer to innovation...a competitor, albeit a very good one. Like AMD is to Intel. But when was the last time Android offered something really new to the mobile market?

Among other things, I sell consumer electronics. I will not escape the retards looking to Apple so they can revolutionize the revolution with their revolutionary products, by the grace of Steve Jobs (God's other son), for some time.

It's quite annoying to have to pretend that a potential customer isn't a mouth-breathing moron that, based on their reasoning, is choosing an iDevice solely because their neighbor has one and OMG if they don't get one, too, then he wins whatever fucking competition these idiots think they're playing at.

There are Fandroids out there, too, and I've met them as well, but they are outnumbered by the iDiots by about 1000:1. Anyone that sells consumer electronics (outside of perhaps some butthurt Apple Store employees) will tell you that it really is almost cult-like, the way iDevices are revered among people.

Fuck Apple... god,I'm getting tired of typing that over and over again... I hated Apple before hating Apple was cool. I've hated them ever since they introduced the Mac. Not the iMac, not the eMac, not the short lived uMac that Apple hopes no one remembers... because it sucked ass. The original Mac. In fact, if I'd seen an Apple Lisa when it first came out, I'm sure I'd have hated that too. Every good idea Apple has ever had it stole from someone else. Like Microsoft, actually. All they're really good at is being sneaky, creepy assholes who know how to play people, and would rather sue than work. The lawyer is the hardest working guy at Apple. Apple just takes what other people created, makes it slicker, slaps their little fucking apple with a bite taken out of it logo on it, and legions of sycophantic morons line up to buy them. Jesus, you'd think they were waiting to meet a rock star or something. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S III the moment I was upgrade eligible just so I could get one BEFORE FUCKING APPLE MAKES IT FUCKING ILLEGAL. What Apple doesn't want to admit is that there are people like me out there, who wouldn't buy their fuckng iShit if it were the last smart phone on Earth, so even if Samsung come out with the iGalaxy, and it has a spunky, snarky virtual assistant named Sara, they're STILL NOT damaging Apple's bottom line because it's not that Samsung's supposéd copy of Apple isn't COOL enough to be mistaken for an iPieceOfShit, it's that Samsung's product isn't FUCKING GAY ENOUGH to be confused with anything made by Apple. So as I've been saying for about 20 fucking years now... FUCK APPLE!!!

But then again, "brands" are concepts by and for fucked up people to begin with. Crap in, crap out. Hate is pointless, but shrugging off any and all brands is pretty much a requirement if your mind is to ever leave the purely receptive stage.

There aren't a lot of companies that "innovate" any more, no matter which criteria you use. There never were. Real innovation is actually pretty rare, always has been.

And there will be fewer and fewer as long as the patent process, and "intellectual property" generally, continue to be abused by companies like Apple.

I've benefited greatly from owning Apple stock, but I'm getting pretty tired of their act. I've been selling off my shares to pay for my daughter's education, and the feeling in my stomach every time I read about Apple treating the patent system like it's own personal ATM, I'm glad I've pretty much divested.

It's not only Apple doing this of course, but like with most things, they've learned to do it more profitably. It's starting to hurt consumers.

Apple is always quick to litigate over even the most obscure toe-stepping by companies on its products, so it only seems natural that when they blatantly rip off another device they should pay the same price, even if they don't lose the suit.

Microsoft's idea is not just adding a keyboard to a tablet. It is about a thin tablet cover which works as a keyboard.

I am not sure how will it perform but I like that you don't need to carry a keyboard.

Asus transformer. The keyboard is also a cover. Though not thin - it holds additional batteries, which give it enough weight to stop the tablet tipping it over backwards.

Not "Or", I think ASUS are the one's driving innovation in this space. The EEE pc was a game changing concept that was pretty much subverted into something it wasn't. These Eee pads are certainly a refresh of the concept that includes a pad. I've found it to be a flexible design and I don't think Asus get the credit they deserve.

I just got the latest Transformer (Infinity). The optional keyboard w/ battery is definitely a great form factor. I believe Lenovo has one coming out and Asus has announced at least one Win8 version.

That's the one I'm after next - how do you find it (and can you get it in blue?)

Is this another case of Apple copying what Sony is doing,

Doesn't matter. The only important thing is who bagged the patent.

You might want to look up what "prior art" means.

Since when has that mattered to the patent office or Apple?

Unfortunately, this is too true. Especially, when you go to court to defend the "patent" and you have the judge in your pocket. (Hi, Judge Joh!). Its nice to be able to get prior art thrown out when its not convenient for your case.

Apple didn't copy Sony. You're just repeating nonsense.

For infringing on the patent for their new and innovative iSurface device. Tim Cook proclaims "Steve Jobs would want us to vigorously defend our innovations against those who would ride on Apples coat tails."

Microsoft Surface Bound to be Awesome (0)

Vrekais (1889284) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877113)

Apple tries to patent and monopolise all the awesome things, I was already sold on the surface pro being the first tablet I'd buy... strangely I'm now even more certain I'll buy one.

Re:Microsoft Surface Bound to be Awesome (0)

Agreed. All this does is reaffirm Microsoft's innovative yet controversial decision to build the Surface. Kudos to MS.

Apple needs to make a TOUCHSCREEN laptop and then update the OS X to work with it. That would be FUCKING awesome.

Trackpads are nice, but sometime it would be faster to just touch the big red button on the screen.

Bribery, or they have a very specific implementation that they're patenting, and not the overall concept.

Maybe not a bad idea (2)

fa2k (881632) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877191)

[...]would be like converging a toaster and a refrigerator

It seems that most household appliances exist to alter the temperature of something. It would be great if the heat from a cooling appliance could do something useful. It obviously wouldn't work to toast bread directly with the cooling ribs, but there may be room for some convergence between appliances, to increase efficiency

Good Thing (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40877193)

Glad to see Apple changed their minds about the convergence; they should have done it a long time ago, and the first time I heard about the Surface I actually thought about buying one (though after the information that's come out since, I've given up on that idea).

And Apple will implement it (1)

Grudge2012 (2662391) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877215)

Just like they implemented the "mouse with rotary control", the "color changing case" and "liquid cooled laptops". Those are just some of the Apple patents people on Slashdot took for granted would be implemented.

Apple copying Microsoft? BS. (1)

xcfx (844022) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877273)

Funny how people seem to credit the "multitouch notebook that converts to a tablet" to Microsoft Surface, when intact, these designs were first seen in accessories for the iPad. So, while Apple didn't create the actual device, they did in fact created the market for this by having third partiers develop stuff for their products. Sorry, it's the truth.

Re:Apple copying Microsoft? BS. (3, Informative)

lilfields (961485) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877335)

I am fairly certain that a touchscreen and keyboard combo existed way before the iPad was even in prototype stages. The first -modern- tablets were (terrible) Microsoft tablets running full fledged Windows XP. You can actually see them all over hospitals, still. They had keyboards, and styluses. That's 8 or so years before the iPad.

Get a clue [wikipedia.org] to how old this design is. I wouldn't be surprised if there are even older ones out there, this is the one I know of. I still own my TC1100. It's a bit on the slow side now but it's still a good machine.

Covering all bases? (1)

Havenwar (867124) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877365)

So basically what we have here is a company saying... "This is a horrible idea that can never be profitable, but just as insurance we're going to patent it, so that in case someone makes anything like it we can tie them up in courts until we can launch a competitor to take over the market they so kindly created for us."

Yeah, patents are great y'all, no way anyone would ever use them for evil.

I hope Apple doesn't try to shut down the Surface. (1)

elabs (2539572) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877461)

...using that fancy patent they have. We need more players in the tablet space to keep things competitive and innovative. PS I think a fridge that could toast break would be genius. It would really clean up the cluttered kitchen countertop.

Apple the attention whore... (-1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#40877709)

Apple is the Kim K. or Paris Hilton of tech companies. We know we shouldnt pay any attention to them. That only feeds them and makes the problem worse!!! But we just can't help ourselves. Fuck Bill Gates for pulling Apple out of the trash when he did. Apple should have been left out to die, staked out for the fucking crows not saved to perpetrate this travesty upon the world of thinking they invented Cool itself, and suing anyone else who makes something cool. I'm frankly surprised they haven't fucking sued Frigidaire!!!

Reacting instead of Acting. Apple is doomed (1)

freedom_india (780002) | more than 2 years ago | (#40877729)

Apple is going to die a slow death. Steve was a visionary who set the standards that others have failed to match till now. He prized innovation and was a trailblazer, to hell with wallstreet and others. Now, Apple is being led by the B-class bureacrats that he hated SO far. These morons don't have fuckin clue. They are just paper pushers with an IQ of less than 70. These guys hate innovation as it disturbs their sedate lifestyle. Am sure we would see an exodus of engineers from Apple. That's when i will start dumping Apple stock.
