I loved the Pink Five series and it always made me sad the saga wasn't finished. I'm really looking forward to the last part of Episode VI.

Can't speak for the AC but I also love this series. You're going to smell a lot of shit if you judge everything by how shitty it is. Explains that look on your face, it does.

Re:Hell yeah! (1)

realityimpaired (1668397) | about 2 years ago | (#41204777)

Don't speak for the AC... but I didn't really find the video clip all that funny... actually, I found it pretty juvenile. But different people have different senses of humour, and I can see how it would appeal to some people.

And that's the crux of it... my taste in movies is generally pretty cerebral, and I don't really like any American-made comedies, except for once-every-few-year gems that stand out amongst the crap. Off the top of my head, I can't think of an American-made comedy that I enjoyed in the last several years, but there's plenty of films from other English-speaking countries that I liked (and quite a few that weren't in English). And there's the problem... most American comedy tends towards low brow humour, and while there's an audience for it, it doesn't appeal to me.

That being said, good on them. I don't speak for the entire movie-going populace, and given that they're funded by a kickstarter, it's pretty obvious that they do have a fanbase who wants to see it done.

Why not their own scenario? (1)

aNonnyMouseCowered (2693969) | about 2 years ago | (#41202783)

They're the ones making the movie, so I don't really have the right to say it's a waste of time and effort. But the first thought that comes to my mind when I see a competently done, if not altogether well-made, "fan" movie or other fan-made media project is why haven't they expended the same amount of time, effort and yes money on something that might lead to a legal suit or a C&D. Sure anybody can get hit by a copyright troll, but fan media are clearly in the darker side of the fair use grey zone.

How much harder would it be to make Iron Sky when you already have the special effects knowhow to make yet another Star Wars/Star Trek spoof?

...oops (1)

aNonnyMouseCowered (2693969) | about 2 years ago | (#41202785)

Change that "on something that might lead to a legal suit or a C&D" to "on something that wouldn't lead to a legal suit or a C&D"

Re:...oops (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about 2 years ago | (#41202951)

Change that "on something that might lead to a legal suit or a C&D" to "on something that wouldn't lead to a legal suit or a C&D"

Change THAT to "I'm too stupid/lazy/incompetent to know what the 'Preview' button and/or basic proofreading is for. So I wasted another post. Of course, one day it will be something far more important than a Slashdot post and my incompetence won't be so easily corrected, but until then, I will continue to be lazy and thoughtless."

Re:...oops (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 2 years ago | (#41203149)

Change that to "I'm a douche-bag that gets his kicks out of ragging on people over inconsequential things so that I feel important but also in an anonymous way so that I feel safe". Is that really what your life is all about? Please take your meds now.

Re:...oops (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about 2 years ago | (#41203301)

Or "I'm no better than the guy I reply to, he is trying to be offensive in order to troll so he is easy pickings for something to complain about, so I hope to get an instant slam dunk and look good, so I will have a very thin skin and get as offended as possible so I can tell other people how terrible or how this-or-that they must be for daring to screw around in a way that I wouldn't. Yup, it's all about me, baby, me and my orthodoxy, and if you defy that in a way I don't like then by God you must be taken down a peg or two!"

So in short, don't you have some off to fuck? Fuck off. You want to talk about what life is all about but you still haven't advanced beyond the (entry-level) stage of gettting offended and taking seriously what random people post. You are simply not qualified. Climb down off your high horse before that horse throws you off. You don't belong there.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (2)

king neckbeard (1801738) | about 2 years ago | (#41202875)

From the Kickstarter:

A long time ago in a warehouse far far away (in Van Nuys), Trey and Amy made a little spoof about one of the other pilots in that famous attack on the Death Star. To our surprise it became a huge hit, garnering millions of views on Atom.com and was selected by George Lucas himself for the Grand Prize in the official Lucasfilm Star Wars Fanfilm contest.

Also

Stacy even holds the distinction of being the first fan-created Star Wars character to become an official Star Wars character - she makes a cameo appearance in Timothy Zahn's novel Allegiance.

It seems this project is pretty safe legally.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 2 years ago | (#41203037)

I'd have to say the Zahn bit just proves how far Star Wars has come in spoofing itself since the 90s.

Reflecting back on it though, even back then people blocked out the bad and just focused on the good. Much of the post-ROTJ book content really jumped the shark for me, especially the dark horse comics and all the stupid crazy superweapons/villains that overshadowed palpatine. And it's only gotten worse the longer it's dragged on. It's like Star Wars is trying to out-stupid Star Trek for boneheaded canon-clashes.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

dadioflex (854298) | about 2 years ago | (#41203947)

When you start complaining about how Star Wars now isn't as good as Star Wars back then, YOU may have jumped a shark. In a land speeder. Star Wars is always good. Canon is over-rated. I'll read the comics, the books, watch the cartoons and you know what - none of it has an impact, or changes in any way, my love of the original trilogy. Those other three films by body-snatched, Cylon George.... not canon.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

epyT-R (613989) | about 2 years ago | (#41203065)

I don't see satire or parody as unfair use.. I don't think the law does either. IANAL

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

cpt kangarooski (3773) | about 2 years ago | (#41210227)

Well, in US copyright law, fair use has to be decided on a case by case basis. Just because a work is a parody or satire does not automatically make it a fair use. There is a four prong test that's usually used for fair use decisions; you can see it at 17 USC 107.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (3, Interesting)

But the first thought that comes to my mind when I see a competently done, if not altogether well-made, "fan" movie or other fan-made media project is why haven't they expended the same amount of time, effort and yes money on something that might (not) lead to a legal suit or a C&D.

Thank god that they don't let the fear of bullying prevent them from doing something that is perfectly legal and appropriate.

If they would have knuckled under to the possibility of a letter from a lawyer, they would have let assholes win and sometimes, that's all the reason you need.

Whenever I see a "fan" movie, I think of the mind-warping "Karen Carpenter Story" made by the great Todd Haynes. No Hollywood studio was going to touch such an unauthorized biopic, so the guy ended up making it with barbie dolls and cheap video at his house, even in the face of threats (empty) from the Carpenter estate and legal trolls and it ended up being something wonderful (though not for everyone's taste).

Not everything has to cater to the expectations of Hollywood norms. Not everything has to satisfy everyone. I could give a shit about Star Wars, but I salute anyone who puts that kind of work into their vision of something, not because it's great art, but because they followed through on something that wasn't easy and almost certainly was a lot of fun to make. Who knows, maybe the next "fan" movie will be something great and enduring, or at least inspiring.

I really, really don't want to think that there's some artist out there, or even hobbyist who will hesitate or not do some work, even something as trivial as "Star Wars fan fiction", because legal industry trolls have stifled them.

I think it was more "if you have any sort of talent, make something new instead of riding the coattails of others" sentiment. But then, this attitude is horribly out of fashion, so much so that anyone espousing it is opened to ridicule.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

PopeRatzo (965947) | about 2 years ago | (#41204879)

"if you have any sort of talent, make something new instead of riding the coattails of others"

Everything rides the coattails of others, to a varying extent.

There are only so many stories.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

DNS-and-BIND (461968) | about 2 years ago | (#41207243)

See? That's exactly the sort of limited-mind thinking that gives us the same recycled crap, again and again. Break out of the box. Tell a new story. Don't listen to those who say there are only so many stories, because that is a filthy lie.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

PopeRatzo (965947) | about 2 years ago | (#41209723)

That's exactly the sort of limited-mind thinking that gives us the same recycled crap, again and again.

Yes, it's also the sort of thinking that gave us some of the greatest works of art.

Should we start with how many of your favorite movies are re-worked from Shakespeare? Or how many from Aeschylus? Aesop?

Don't listen to those who say there are only so many stories, because that is a filthy lie.

That's something that only someone with a very poor understanding of history, and the history of stories, would say.

We're talking about Star Wars here. In fact, Star Wars calls upon several ancient stories and archetypes for its basis. In fact, based upon your idiotic statement, I would venture to say that it's a near certainty that your favorite movies are rehashes of stories that have been told before. The number of absolutely original works of narrative is vanishingly small.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

Maxo-Texas (864189) | about 2 years ago | (#41207165)

I know... why did they make any new Sherlock Holmes films after Basil Rathbone?

And what's up with the new british version of Sherlock?
Sure it's good.. but they could have made up something new instead.

The same could be said for Robert Downy Jr. as Sherlock Holmes.

Entertaining-- yes-- but original?

---

Actually re-examining the works from different angles, with different constraints, can be interesting.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (1)

1u3hr (530656) | about 2 years ago | (#41204097)

something that might lead to a legal suit or a C&D.

Since "Skywalker Sound" is credited for post production, I think we can assume they have that sorted.

Anyway, after watching the first episode, it's pretty crap; without the Star Wars jokes it'd be complete crap.

Re:Why not their own scenario? (2)

Maxo-Texas (864189) | about 2 years ago | (#41206961)

Agreed on the first episode. They should probably remake it.

The second episode is only slightly better.

But then episode three starts hitting on all cylinders as a comedy.

And all the sudden, after that the character came alive (partially her acting of the character got better and plus the character grew up and the writing got better). The writers hit the line between goofy and cool more consistently.

There were still some over the line parts (like her ship breaking the way it did in the deathstar 2 bay) (but they seem to like it since they put it in their trailer- I thought it was a bit dumb).

The last episode was quite good tho still not professional level- it was better than the anakin skywalker episode 1,2,3 series (how could so many excellent actors be bullied in to acting so poorly in one series of films)

Despite the fact that lucas has sucked over time, his willingness to allow fan films has been a great positive.

Ignore those two, they're both deluded idiots.
This is Slashdot news because, unlike other Star Wars films (Hollywood made) this is something people actually want to watch, not NEED to watch, just so they can say they did.

I wonder how the big studios will shift the blame on piracy for this one. I'd try common sense, logic and at least gutter morals as a guide, but so far they don't seem afflicted with any of those.

Re:Oh boy! (1)

hairyfeet (841228) | about 2 years ago | (#41203343)

Hell anything Star Wars without Jar Jar or Anakin/Padame "acting" in it should be commended. I haven't got to watch this yet and can already say its better than the prequels, at least the thought of watching it isn't making my stomach roll. How anybody could ever argue about canon in Star Wars after Lucas took such a massive dump on the franchise I'll never know.

Of course after watching some of the behind the scenes Lucas stuff on the Plinkett videos I have begun to wonder if Lucas wasn't always a complete retard that was only saved from his own dumb ideas by good collaborators that told him to STFU and tone it down some. I mean setting Indiana Jones 3 in a haunted house? I swear that's what Lucas wanted, Indy VS a haunted house...sheesh.

Re:Oh boy! (1)

Seumas (6865) | about 2 years ago | (#41203611)

Not particularly. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I watched Star Wars in the late 90s, when I was in my early 20s and then I moved on with my life. It was fine. It was a blast. It was not something I built the rest of my life around. There's too much interesting stuff out there to get so devotedly wrapped up to a handful of movies that were great decades ago and are mediocre today. I understand this is a "fan endeavor", but I'd rather just see talented people do something original rather than build onto an exhausted and bloated franchise.

However, this Pink Five is shit. If you're going to remake Starwars and give it more female protagonists, don't further the Smurfette syndrome with a stereotypical valley girl character. It's not funny, IMO; It's just sad. Granted, the ridiculousness of the situations are the point. However, If you're being ironically sexist, you're still being sexist.

By the end of the fourth, I found myself wishing there were more.

As usual, it takes time (and episodes) for the script to become more relaxed, for the characters to click, and for the humour to start being, well, humorous. In a way, Pink Five reminded me of The IT Crowd and The Big Bang Theory. The first couple of episodes sucked, let's be honest. Everything felt forced and stiff. Later on, the shows evolved and they became funny.

Here's to the fifth episode, and maybe more!

Star Wreck (0)

There's a fan film based on the Star Trek universe made by a bunch of Finnish fans. I first came across a version called something like Star Wreck in the Perkinning. There's a version out on DVD now. One of the coolest parts is the crossover from the Star Trek universe to the Babylon 5 universe (yes, really!). I suspect the only reason it's not better known is that it's in Finnish, and the only version in English is sub-titled.

I have no problem with fan-made extensions to popular universes. I will have to look into this one.
