Want to Change the Slashdot Logo? For 1 Day in October, You Can

timothy posted about a year and a half ago | from the small-canvas-for-big-ideas dept.

Announcements 128

The Slashdot logo has been around for a long time now; the truth is, we're rather fond of it, and have only rarely introduced substantial changes. But for the month of October, as a way of celebrating the site's 15 years of delivering News for Nerds, we invite you to help us temporarily change it. If you have an idea of what the Slashdot logo should look like for one day in October, this is your chance to see it on the page. Starting September 15th, we'll be accepting entries, and sending limited edition anniversary T-shirts to the artists we pick to show off on the page throughout the month. (And a Nexus 7 tablet to the artist who ranks best in show.) Click through for information on what we're looking for, how to enter, and the long list of rules that the legal department has provided for your reading pleasure; we look forward to seeing and sharing your ideas.

OMG Ponies (5, Funny)

What else is there?

I'm still bitter that the constant Firefox updates broke the add-in that made that layout permanent.

Since it is such a part of the history of /. I propose that we use the ASCII version of Goatse.

The logo is a picture, so why stick to the ASCII version? Just use the current slashdot logo, but instead of the letter o, have you-know-what. At that small size, it wouldn't even be obscene...

They even hinted at such idea, see very last item of "brainstorm" list:

I don't understand. How is this a problem? ;-)

Well, unless you are the goat man (tm) himself, or the photographer who snapped that infamous pic, this would be somebody else's work...

My vote would be for a bunch of tacos. And a millitary commander of sorts. A tribute to CmdrTaco, the founder of the site. We miss you, Rob!

Yeah, and the Trail of Tears [wikipedia.org] is an important part of U.S. history, but I don't seem anybody proposing a dead Indian as national symbol.

Re:OMG Ponies (1)

Jeng (926980) | about a year and a half ago | (#41291117)

Is the Trail of Tears mentioned every time there is a discussion on the U.S. History website?

If so then perhaps it should be part of that websites icon.

Your argument was not worth the time you spent to type it.

Yeah, and the Trail of Tears [wikipedia.org] is an important part of U.S. history, but I don't seem anybody proposing a dead Indian as national symbol.

It would be a very honest choice as a symbol, though.

I'd like to point out that Slashdot was 5 years ahead of the brony craze. The new logo needs to have, if not Rainbow Dash, maybe the pony that goes "you're gonna LOVE ME!!!!!" (seems to fit at least couple regulars well)

Re:OMG Ponies (1)

I'm seriously disappointed that i just found out about that add-on now, after it's already been broken.

OMG Ponies [desiringmachine.org] was my first thought as well. I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard to get enough vote to win either, given how popular the AF joke was back in 2006.

After all, Slashdot did ponies before they were cool [clubpenguininsiders.com] :)

How about " \ . " to profess our love of windows. Of course if we can round up a few million bucks, maybe we can get a corporate designer to come up with something as exciting as 4 colored squares in a square pattern.

(FYI, the new windows logo reminds me of the millions AT&T spent when spinning off Lucent to come up with the "coffee stain" logo that was ridiculed by most including a Dilbert [dilbert.com] strip [dilbert.com] .)

I suggest the "new" logo (5, Insightful)

Huh. That lame little application is just a design firm's way of snarking about The Gap's failed rebranding attempt. If you follow the link to their blog [underconsideration.com] , you discover they know fuck all about web design. They actually allow the reader to choose either of two layouts, both using obsolete fixed-width designs. Kind of undercuts their smug satire of other people's failures.

I've already set up a greasemonkey script to replace the logo with one of my choosing. OK, I haven't really, but for anybody who really cared to do this, it would be a simple task. Why would you want to change the logo? What is the purpose of this?

If it aint' broke, don't fix it. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to make another post complaining on how SlashTV is a waste of electrons and how the old /. format was so much better than the current AJAX garbage.. I'd mention SlashBI, but I think that one speaks for itself.

In fact if you talk to the people who actually frequent this website you'll find out that no one likes any changes made within the last 10 years.

Re:Seriously. (1)

cornface (900179) | about a year and a half ago | (#41290815)

Yeah, I know. I've been posting here under various accounts for 10+ years.

It seems like the general slashdot method of operation is to turn accidental success into intentional failure.

I imagine they will port it to Drupal eventually, but we need a really strong 10/10 book on it first and Packt hasn't released it yet.

Rich text editor for comments? The ability to edit comments for a brief period of time after posting? Better usage of JavaScript? Linking to original sources and not crappy blogs? Quit using question marks in headlines? Fact-check submissions when it's trivial to do so? (Bonus: Fact-check submissions when it's not trivial to do so?*)

For one day! In October!

Plaid. You can never go wrong with a good plaid.

Here's some 2012 logo design trends I stole from another site with absolutely no attribution whatsoever.

Twixt – These contain odd little interlinks between points that suggest connectivity.
Angle bombs – These contain highly angled geometric shapes, oftentimes triangles, and are usually chaotic and without symmetry, like an explosion of sharp pieces from a central explosion.
Leaf amalgams – Leaves used to build cars, people, other leaves, whatever.
Copy – These designs use minute words as a graphic component, but the words could never be read. It is texture, not text.
Penumbra – Think of a halo of layered and colored light circles that are not quite centered on each other.
Monoliths – Squares or rectangles that are in perspective and that appear to be drifting.

So take these, hire some artists for, like $75,000, wind up with something so horrible you have no choice but to bury the only copies of the design in a lead casket far underground, and finally just toss up a loose variant of the Starbucks logo with "Slashdot" in Helvetica and the "d" rotated at a 90 degree angle like the M in the Animal Planet logo.

Keep the new logo up for a week. Quietly revert back to the old one at midnight between Saturday and Sunday. Never speak of it again.
