Slashdot Turns 15, What Are You Doing Later?

samzenpus posted about a year ago | from the party-like-it's-2012 dept.

Announcements 247

October marks Slashdot's 15th birthday. That's right, we're almost old enough to drive the PT Cruiser. Throughout October we'll be running a number of meta news articles about our history, plans for the future, and special interviews. We're also giving away T-shirts to people willing to organize and host the biggest Slashdot parties. It's easy to get started. Just visit the Slashdot Anniversary Party Web Page. Sign up to go to a party, or if there aren't any in your area, create your own during the official party period of Oct. 20-30. The details of your local parties are up to you. Each has a corresponding discussion so you can work it out amongst yourselves. Wherever several Slashdot readers gather, we'll attempt to mail shirts until we run out. Geeknet will host parties in San Francisco, New York, and Ann Arbor. To be eligible for schwag, you need to schedule your party by September 27, or sign up to attend one by September 28. This will give us time to figure out where to send the shirts, and time to send them. Help us celebrate 15 years of news for nerds and stuff that matters.

eewwww. I would never touch slashdot... it's covered in goatse trolls, and judging from the articles on the front page, it's borderline retarded.

What do you mean by "almost old enough to drive the PT Cruiser." Isn’t the minimum age to drive 14? (And yes, I did grow up in a farm state)

It's 16 here (Florida, USA). There's been talk for years of raising it to 18.

Well the site's been up for that long, but I'd say that the accumulated duration of actual news and stuff that really mattered only reaches about 18 months, tops.

Really Sad about this anniversary (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41388761)

I've been reading since year 1, and feel the only reason I even come here anymore is just force of habit. The quality of the site has continually gone down, the stories are half flamebait and half trollbait, and has strayed far from the originally news for nerds idea.

Not the mention the comment moderation still remains horrifically broken and prone to abuse, the ugly layout has barely gotten any better. This place kind of reminds of myspace or RIM- early pioneer that couldn't innovate and adapt to changing times.

Just wanted to second this, even though I know I'll receive retaliatory moderation for it. Slashdot's approach of 'give random people a badge and a gun with no accountability' has created an environment best suited for long-term flame wars. Please fix either the reqs for being a mod or our ability to kick the assholes out of the mod-pool.

Re:Why a PT Cruiser? (1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389475)

IIRC, Slashdot had a PT they were using for promotional purposes early on. That would be about the right timeframe. I remember seeing glossy magazine ads for it in the late 90s (when even tech people were still reading printed magazines!). I had two thoughts about the PT at the time: 1. It's nice to see Detroit doing something that isn't just a blob. 2. The retro-styling might be an ominous portent that the booming economy is coming to an end, because it looked like something from the 30s or 40s.

When I found out it was built on a Neon chasis, 1 went out the door. 2 proved prescient with the passage of time...

I started reading Slashdot some time in high school (late 90's), this was the beginning of my career in IT. I was hired sophomore year to be a member of the paid IT staff and never looked back. Thank you Slashdot, even though Rob called me a noob at LinuxWorld a while back, I still love you.

What /. has been doing lately: suck.

1. Get an editor. Just one real one. Only let them promote stories.
2. Stop posting crap. Just one editor will help. Fewer, better stories, please.
** Major Backlash Looms For Apple's New Maps App - crap
** TSA Spending $245 Million On "Second Generation" Body Scanners - offtopic
** Designers Criticize Apple's User Interface For OS X and iOS - crap
** Roundup Tolerant GM Maize Linked To Tumor Development - offtopic
3. Contact sites you're going to link to. Maybe even arrange caching.

User ID vs year joined? (4, Interesting)

Sebastopol (189276) | about a year ago | (#41389033)

Is there a way to see when I joined based on my ID? I think it was some time in 1997.

It'd be cool to see how membership has grown....

User Ids:
1995 : 0 - 1000
1996: 1001 - 50000
1997; 50,000 - 200,000
etc...

Re:User ID vs year joined? (1)

xpurple (1227) | about a year ago | (#41389189)

It's insane the number of people here now. Please note my low ID :)

Not that many. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389319)

Probably not nearly as many as the ID's would indicate. Probably half or more are abandoned and another quarter are sockpuppets, astroturfers, and other bogus accounts. I haven't logged into my own account in years as it just doesn't seem worth it.

Re:User ID vs year joined? (1)

rhizome (115711) | about a year ago | (#41389333)

Everybody probalby thought 1200 users was a lot for the site back then. :) Once past 10,000 someone started saying how there are too many people and /. had lost its edge or wasn't cool anymore. Then around 90,000 people started registering for the low uids. Obviously I'm not a joiner. ;)

Re:User ID vs year joined? (3, Insightful)

LuxuryYacht (229372) | about a year ago | (#41389473)

Some of us would just visit the site daily without siging up until a couple of years later to be able to submit stories, post or moderate.

Re:User ID vs year joined? (1)

cluening (6626) | about a year ago | (#41389773)

Back at the time, I actually purposely avoided signing up because it was right at the time that web accounts were ballooning and I didn't want to add to my set of disjointed accounts. Now I'm kind of sad that my uid is so high.

Re:User ID vs year joined? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389287)

Slashdot didn't have user accounts for quite some time, you just filled out some forms and it was saved in a cookie. So lower user id doesn't mean necessarily older user for low account numbers.

Re:User ID vs year joined? (3, Insightful)

curunir (98273) | about a year ago | (#41389561)

I started reading late '97 but wasn't convinced to actually sign up until sometime in '99. My guess is that you signed up early 2000. There were a lot of people who lurked and posted anon back then rather than sign up, so slightly higher IDs aren't really an indication that people missed the early days.

Re:User ID vs year joined? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389925)

Sounds about right - my uid is about 1500 higher than yours, and I think I finally registered in late '98 or '99. (Too lazy to log in atm.)

Re:User ID vs year joined? (1)

Desler (1608317) | about a year ago | (#41389647)

There were no registered accounts in 1995 or 1996 since, you know, the site didn't even exist. There is also no way you registered in 1997 since the site started in September and there were not 200000 registered users since user accounts didn't exist until after the 1998 rewrite.

gstoddart (321705) | about a year ago | (#41389073)

I can only imagine how that party plays out.

Several groups standing around flaming one another over something inane. A couple of people saying the party is a dupe. One guy in the corner talking about picking poo out of the toilet in the library. A couple of people walking around with the goatse picture trying to get people to look at it. And one or two people who seem to have Tourette's shouting obscenities for no good reason. One really loud guy saying the iPad is for hipster douchebags even though he's never used one. The odd mumble about our new Dice (or other) overlords.

Shame there's not one near me. ;-)

community? (0)

Triv (181010) | about a year ago | (#41389213)

Sorry guys, but you're a bit late - Slashdot hasn't been this kind of community in a decade, and even if it was, the whole point of the place (Natalie Portman and grits aside) is that we don't have to interact with actual people to talk about tech stuff.

Crap like this is unsettling. We're not FARKers. We don't interact IRL.

It's like you have no idea who your readership is.

Re:community? (1)

Seumas (6865) | about a year ago | (#41389943)

The amount of obvious spam and the constant politicizing of everything around here (encouraged by the often very political; not necessarily geek-oriented editorial submissions) has been pretty off-putting, too. And the comments don't help that, either. More each day, I run across discussions on here that sound like the vomit I read spewed out by mouth-breathing jack-holes on any random website that Matt Drudge links to (say, the comment section of a CBS News article about a hit and run accident that immediately turns into a room full of five year olds blathering about Obama's birth certificate and jesus this and god that and libtard this and republithug that.

. . . and then, there's the slow redditization of Slashdot. That's probably the ultimate insult. You see this evidenced by the back and forth idiotic circle-jerks of one-liners and occasional links to "FOREVER ALONE GUY" and other bullshit.

How about some birthday presents for the users (3, Interesting)

onyxruby (118189) | about a year ago | (#41389349)

Let's give the users some birthday presents. How about bringing about some features that people have been asking for?

Mobile Application - how does a technology based website /not/ have a mobile application?
Mobile Support - actually trying to use slashdot on a mobile platform is painful.
Simple Status Change - a simple delta of how people have modded you or commented on your comments?
A disagree button - it's 15 years on and their is still no simple 'disagree', instead fanbois simply -1 any comment against their pet /whatever/
Comment activity - if you've got a comment that's being heavily modified you can't get the stats for it anymore, as memory serves you used to.
Your user stats - once upon a time these were available, now your limited to your number of +5 comments
Better shill detection - I wouldn't think this would be that hard to program, but I'm not a programmer
Editor - enough said!

Re:How about some birthday presents for the users (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389765)

There is a mobile interface, I use it on my tablet. However, it's kind of strange. I think the interface I see is meant for phones, it'd be nice to see a layout meant for 7"/10" devices.

Not to mention tapping on the homepage (the sf.net/~user page) button doesn't work, it pops down a menu then immediately pops up some options, without letting you choose something from the menu it shows. It's a wee bit buggy.

I disagree about the editor. Think about what you're saying before you hit submit. Yes, typos happen. Deal with it or be more careful.

You forgot one: confirm moderations! This is more of an issue with tablets. Maybe it can be held to the tablet/phone interface only...

What Is Slashdot Doing at 15? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#41389715)

Somehow I imagine a pubescent, teenage personification of Slashdot rushing home to his mother's house after school, whacking it off once or twice (or thrice) before anyone else comes home, and spending the rest of the day between the Simpsons and putting stuff in the microwave to see what sparkles and what doesn't.

Where will one find time to code in that laundry list of shenanigans?

Seumas (6865) | about a year ago | (#41389837)

Slashdot may be turning fifteen, but it has been clinically brain-dead for the last five years.

Aside from the often miserable editorial failures, it's rapidly becoming one of those sites that decays to the point that most of its content is spambots posting links to sites that sell shoes and fake Rolex watches. I will not be at all surprised when the day comes that I visit slashdot.org and am greeted with one of those link-trolling sites that pop up in your google search results where a domain has long-since expired and been taken over by spammers trying to funnel you into their crap (like this [funemployment.com] site).
