James Cameron Spills the Details From His Deep Dive

Soulskill posted about a year and a half ago | from the rich-dudes-doing-science dept.

Earth 43

gbrumfiel writes "James Cameron has released the first batch of scientific results from his historic dive in March to bottom of the Mariana trench and an earlier series of test dives in the New Britain Trench. The Mariana Trench dive was the deepest by a human since 1960. Some of the most interesting results came from trips to the seafloor made by robotic vehicles built by Cameron's team. At the bottom of the trench, one of those robots found bizarre carpets of microbes coating rocks, that scientists say may have implications for the origins of life on Earth and other planets."

He couldn't open it. The latch clearly read "Occupied".

What!? That would not stop him. For,

His name is James Cameron! The bravest pioneer! No budget too steep, no sea too deep. Whoâ(TM)s that? Itâ(TM)s him! James Cameron!

James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is... James Cameron.

Sadly, that was the only decent episode in the entire season.

While things haven't been great in 2 or 3 years, I liked Blockbuster Shining and Darth Mouse

I found both Reverse Cowgirl and A Scause for Applause to be pretty good as well. Cartman Finds Love was pretty good, and Cash for Gold wasn't too bad either, although I can understand that one isn't for everyone. I've also heard that Going Native is a hell of lot more funny if you actually live in Hawaii. Really the only episode that I didn't care for at all was Faith Hilling. The rest were just par for the course.

Compared to the last season, this one has a had a lot of good episodes.

Why is everyone referencing a South Park episode? (2)

neminem (561346) | about a year and a half ago | (#42194921)

When the obvious thing to ask whether he found or not, would be an alien race of water weirds, and if you think he went specifically to retrieve something, well, that would clearly be the nukes out of a downed US sub.

because South Park is awesome

I'm pretty sure those are Russian Water Tentacles. Better send in the SEALs.

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#42196087)

I've seen enough manga to know where this....

That would not be my preferred flavor at all. The Seals belong in a FPS. Best to not mix my entertainment types.

Honestly, when I was quoting the Abyss, I never even considered the hentai angle. Now I can never look at that movie the same way...

Anybody that is capable of retrieving the nukes, already has some.

aardwolf64 (160070) | about a year and a half ago | (#42195281)

It makes perfect sense... Life originated in the Marianas Trench. Once one of the little fishies was strong enough to swim to the surface, he directed Titanic.

The real reason. (0)

We all know that he made the trip to get that stupid necklace. How could they forget to have a net or something there to catch it when Rose tosses it from the boat?!

Somehow the microbes must tie into it.

1. Cameron and scientists scoop some up to study.
2. Cyberdyne creates an hybrid machine/organic AI based on the microbes.
3. ...
4. Machines take over 20 years later!!!

Why always have be "origin of live of earth?" (1)

tphb (181551) | about a year and a half ago | (#42195695)

Can't it just be "it was really neat down there and we found some awesome new bugs"? Does it always have to have implications for the origins of life on earth and other planets?" Stupid press release writers. Come'on - it's the frickin' Marriana Trench. You don't have to draw "deeper" implications.

slashmydots (2189826) | about a year and a half ago | (#42200489)

Even at the very bottom of the ocean, he still couldn't find any character development or 2 dimensional characters in Avatar. I guess no matter where or how you look at it, they're still cartoonishly cliche walking stereotypes like "mister mean military man" and "super serious manager lady" and "do no wrong hero hippie guy."

Re:And still no discovery (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#42201817)

That movie wasn't about plot or development. It was about his obsession with Furries.
