Alleged ZeuS Botmaster Arrested For Stealing $100M From US Banks

timothy posted about a year and a half ago | from the stumbling-block-on-the-career-path dept.

Botnet 76

Trailrunner7 writes "A 24-year-old Algerian man remains in a Thai jail awaiting extradition to the United States, where he is suspected of masterminding more than $100 million in global bank heists using the ZeuS and SpyEye Trojans. Malaysian authorities believe they've apprehended the hacker Hamza Bendelladj, who they say has been jetsetting around the world using millions of dollars stolen online from various banks. He was arrested at a Bangkok airport en route from Malaysia to Egypt. The hacker had developed a considerable reputation as a major operator of ZeuS-powered botnets and bragged about his exploits"

Don't spend money like an brain-dead Arkansas lotto winner if you steal millions of dollars from US victims using malware.

What else can he do with it besides spend it? He can't put it in the bank because banks aren't safe any more.

He didn't say "don't spend it". He said don't spend it like an idiot. Not that complicated.

What? Isn't that Obama, Bernanke, Geithner, and the rest of the Legislative branch of the US government? The thing is, only the little guy gets arrested and punished for theft, but if you're a big hedge fund or banker John Corzine type, you get away with murder.

I wouldn't call someone "suspected of masterminding more than $100 million in global bank heists" a "little guy".

BTW, none of those guys you mentioned are accused of running botnets, and none of them work in the Legislative branch, so why are you even bringing them up?

I think AC was pointing to the fact that, rather than hold the people who caused the financial meltdown and subsequent bailout responsible, the authorities let them walk with their ill-gotten profits from their financial shenanigans. Isn't it up to the authorities to a) prevent these things; and / or b) prosecute them? We prosecute a botnet master who brags about his exploits, but we let walk those white collar criminals that took even more.

Re:moral of the story (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#42566895)

I doubt he will walk so easily. Probably the best bet he will get is a plea bargain where they cut his sentence to something like 50 years in prison, if he helps catch the rest of the operators and create an absolute defense against the mal-ware. But that still wont make him immune to joint bank lawsuits that will attempt to make up for the moneys list due to theft insurance claims.

Except that is exactly what you have advocated for a long time, though - a judicial system for the wealthy. You call for greater concentration of power for the wealthiest people in this country, and here you are looking at a prime example of it - yet you are unhappy?

You claim that concentrating wealth and power into increasingly fewer hands will somehow deliver freedom. You claim that you want liberty - though what you really aim to bring about is fascism for the people.

If he would have owned a bank and not 0wned them, he could have gotten away with a lot more then just 100.000.000.
I wonder how accurate that figure is. Is it just an attempt or is it the actual figure he would have been able to spend if he would not have been caught?

I suspect he did not get that money and the number is just everything added that can be pointed to theft, including pens and staplers and the electricity bill used to run the servers.

If it was actually 100M he could have been able to spend, then I can only applaud him. I have seen people be fired over stealing 2USD worth of stuff. That is totally not worth it. But 100M? Stoopid he bragged about it, but that is how must get caught. Either bragging or snitches.

Says a CEO of a bank/board of directors member (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#42566953)

Centralized banks are part of the problem out there. The USA can't pay off debts when they borrow money at interest compounding the debt even more. You'll never get into the principal of the debt is why. It is a huge trap, which is why Rothschild himself (a member of the IMF - international monetary fund) said "I care not who makes the laws in a nation if I control the money supply". Now, mind you, the FED itself isn't anymore 'federal' than Federal Express is. It's not even really legal - it was voted in while the majority of the house/senate was out on Xmas vacation when only the "cronies" bought & paid for by the wealthy bankers remained on purpose to make this 'law' (yes, we truly have the "best money can buy" in many of our politicians). Andrew Jackson wrote on his gravestone "I killed the bank" - why? We had ANOTHER depression prior to "the great one" earlier on that not many speak of, as generations forget, a major premise here in fact (also engineered like that in the 1920's by J.P. Morgan a crony of big money too, who could steer markets with his words is how/why & destroy them with misinformation to - people 'bum rushed' the banks on his advice to pull their monies). Once Jackson removed central bank interests? The USA righted itself financially again. Lincoln avoided them also by printing the greenback rather than letting bankers clutches choke this nation as well. The bankers don't give up that easily though. They don't *think* in 5-10 yr. increments in time. They think 50-100 yrs. ahead & did it again with Woodrow Wilson: That's right. He even said "I made a pact with the devil" (near to that, not direct quote). What happened?? The great depression of the 20's not too long after! The "investment class" plays entire populace's by the very fact of this old adage: "Those who don't know history are bound to repeat it" - they keep doing the same basic trick time & again, every other generation (knowing those new ones won't recall the game played on them 1-2 generations before is why). They know history, & use it against you. You don't know it, they know they CAN do it and will. So, get real banker - you can fool most of us most of the time, but not all of us, all of the time. Between big federal gov't. (which has those "truly best money can really buy" politicians noted above, & everyone knows it) which needs to be downsized because of the 'favors' they can sell (to lobbyists or their corporate masters that have corporate execs write bills they pass into law, via the 'revolving door' with guys like Dick Cheney going in & out of politics over decades to MAKE it happen as I explain it) this is the basic mechanics used against you people. A child can understand it once shown and with examples noted above. Argue with them, history of all things, backs me completely.

These people may have some superior specialized skills, but personality-wise, they are retarded. The same can incidentally be found in a lot of CEOs and high-placed government officials. Seems we promote the scum to the top, and those that cannot get promoted turn to crime instead in order to implement their delusions of grandeur.

There are studies that show that personality disorders are more common in senior executives than the criminally insane: [bhevolution.org]

For our purposes, the most interesting results of the study came from the comparison of the senior business executives to the offenders at Broadmoor. The study showed that three out of the eleven personality disorders were more common in the senior business managers than in the criminal psychiatric patients

Of course. That's why the middle-of-the-road average folks never brag about their fantasy football team, or how their kid did well in the science fair, or how perfectly that prank went off last week... And that failed project wasn't because of the "sick" day when the report was due, but definitely because of the manager's incompetence. Sure.

Everybody takes credit for their achievements, and blames others for their problems. Why should CEOs or criminals be any different?

Which, if you read the list of what it can do for you as an end user of the resulting output it produces, you'll understand how/why...

"It's as strong as steel, & a 3rd of the weight" - Howard Stark from the film "Captain America"

( Vs. competing alternate 'solutions', noted below, next, as 'examples thereof'... )

Solutions that used to be good & I even recommended them in security guides I wrote up over the decades now for Windows users, for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" purposes - the BEST THING WE HAVE GOING vs. threats of all kinds, currently!

(Not anymore though as far as AdBlock's concerned, not after this):

---

Adblock Plus To Offer 'Acceptable Ads' Option

http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/12/12/2213233/adblock-plus-to-offer-acceptable-ads-option [slashdot.org]

---

Plus, adblock CAN'T DO AS MUCH & not from a single file solution that runs in Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode via tcpip.sys, a driver (since it's part of the IP stack & tightly integrated into it). To wit, 10 things AdBlock can't do, hosts can:

---

1.) Blocking rogue DNS servers malware makers use

2.) Blocking known sites/servers that serve up malware... like known sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve up malicious scripts

3.) Speeding up your FAVORITE SITES that hosts can speed up via hardcoded line item entries properly resolved by a reverse DNS ping

4.) AdBlock works on Mozilla products (browser & email), hosts work on ANY webbound app AND are multiplatform.

5.) AdBlock can't protect external to FireFox email programs, hosts can (think OUTLOOK, Eudora, & others)

6.) AdBlock can't help you blow past DNSBL's (DNS block lists)

7.) AdBlock can't help you avoid DNS request logs (hosts can via hardcoded favorites)

8.) AdBlock can't protect you vs. TRACKERS (hosts can)

9.) AdBlock can't protect you vs. DOWNED or "DNS-poisoned" redirected DNS servers (hosts can by hardcodes)

10.) Hosts are EASIER to manage, they're just a text file (adblock means you had BEST know your javascript, perl, & python (iirc as to what languages are used to make it from source)).

& more... as a tiny 'sampling' & proofs thereof!

---

Same with Ghostery:

---

Evidon, which makes Ghostery, is an advertising company.

They were originally named Better Advertising, Inc., but changed their name for obvious PR reasons.

Despite the name change, let's be clear on one thing: their goal still is building better advertising, not protecting consumer privacy.

Evidon bought Ghostery, an independent privacy tool that had a good reputation.

They took a tool that was originally for watching the trackers online, something people saw as a legitimate privacy tool, and users were understandably concerned.

The company said they were just using Ghostery for research.

Turns out they had relationships with a bunch of ad companies and were compiling data from which sites you visited when you were using Ghostery, what trackers were on those sites, what ads they were, etc., and building a database to monetize.

When confronted about it, they made their tracking opt-in and called it GhostRank, which is how it exists today.

They took an open-source type tool, bought it, turned it from something thatâ(TM)s actually protecting people from the ad industry, to something where the users are actually providing data to the advertisers to make it easier to track them. This is a fundamental conflict of interest.

To sum up: Ghostery makes its money from selling supposedly de-indentified user data about sites visited and ads encountered to marketers and advertisers. You get less privacy, they get more money.

That's an inverse relationship.

Better Advertising/Evidon continually plays up the story that people should just download Ghostery to help them hide from advertisers.

Their motivation to promote it, however, isn't for better privacy; it's because they hope that you'll opt in to GhostRank and send you a bunch of information.

They named their company Better Advertising for a reason: their incentive is better advertising, not better privacy.

---

Yes - hosts are superior!

Vs. even DNS servers too (which hosts files can supplement to overcome THEIR shortcomings, as follows):

---

A.) Running another program (sometimes in usermode no less, far, Far, FAR slower than kernelmode by many orders of magnitude & easily attacked) vs. the single hosts file (tightly integrated into the IP stack itself as part of it).

B.) Wasting CPU cycles, RAM memory, & other forms of I/O to do what a single file can do

C.) Wasting ELECTRICITY (especially if the DNS server is setup as a separate machine) even if run as a service/daemon on a single system as user has

D.) DNS has NUMEROUS faults, & should anyone request a sampling of them? Ask & "ye shall receive" (I don't want to bloat this post anymore right now is why - lots of information to extoll in DETAIL, as is...).

---

HOWEVER:

I don't "hate" DNS servers - I use them myself (since I don't attempt to resolve 'every host-domain there is online' via hosts, only my favorites @ the top of the file, 20 of them, which beats hashtable indexing or b-tree binary seeks past 2++ million records no less) - I use specialized FILTERING DNS SERVERS that help block out malicious sites/servers/hosts-domains via DNSBLs:

ALL in a layered formation in both my network connection AND my Cisco/LinkSys stateful packet inspecting router.

(Again - for the concept of "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth", the best thing we have going currently vs. malicious threats online & otherwise...)

* :)

(Beat THAT with a stick... or better yet? With information that disproves my points (to any 'naysayers' or trolls, that is)).

Now - I truly KNOW this post will no doubt be downmodded, because Advertisers do NOT want this type of information getting out en-masse to enlighten users... no way, & if folks don't *believe* that goes on here & this site doesn't make monies off ads?

They're insane!

APK

P.S.=> Anyhow/anyways: This guy & his 'erstwhile colleagues/cohorts in crime online'? They have CONTINUALLY attempted to DDoS 'bomb-out' the source I use vs. their machinations here -> https://zeustracker.abuse.ch/monitor.php?filter=lastupdated [abuse.ch]

That "ReAcTioN" ALONE should tell everyone just how efffective that data is when put into a custom hosts file!

(Easiest method there is, especially via my program & yes, also especially considering they use 99.999% host-domain names they paid for vs. IP addresses, since they paid for those, & consider them an 'investment in time' + reuse/recycle them - the "RBN" was notorious for it, moving unscrupulous hosting provider to unscrupulous hosting provider to do so)...

Thanks for proving my point(s)... apk (-1)

Now? I'll prove a few more (which ought to enlighten MANY here with facts):

"Now - I truly KNOW this post will no doubt be downmodded, because Advertisers do NOT want this type of information getting out en-masse to enlighten users... no way, & if folks don't *believe* that goes on here & this site doesn't make monies off ads? They're insane!" - by Anonymous Coward on Saturday January 12, @08:34AM (#42566755)

See that, & my subject-line above...

* Yes, I am always correct - that's not very difficult since I know the nature of the opponent!

---

THUS - No matter what? You make ME, look GOOD (and correct, every single time) - you can't win:

Many are getting wise to what I posted which you downmodded unjustly!

In fact?

I challenge ANYONE to disprove my points here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3377363&cid=42566755 [slashdot.org]

I know you can't, & that's that!

And, the trolls downmodding me know it too, as MANY have tried since 2007 here, not a single 'naysayer' has to date with me utterly SHATTERING their bullshit easily on many grounds...

(Yes - says worlds about it, especially since it stands true no matter what & all you have? Is downmods to *try* to "hide it" from viewers!)

Clue/New NEWS/NewsFlash: MANY here read below the bogus "so-called easily cheated moderation system" here (via multiple accounts, as follows, & the biggest crookes use it) ala:

Small wonder than an Open SORES "big name" in Bruce Perens even said this about how trolling shills work on forums:

"It just takes one Ubuntu sympathizer or PR flack to minus-moderate any comment. Unfortunately, once PR agencies and so on started paying people to moderate online communities, and to have hundreds of accounts each, things changed." - by Bruce Perens (3872) on Friday July 30, @03:55PM (#33089192) Homepage Journal

And, how the Chinese Water Army: does the same:

http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=%22Chinese+Water+Army%22&btnG=Search&gbv=1&sei=tSchUJjPGYn36gGYtIDACQ [google.com]

As does HBGary:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/02/16/945768/-UPDATED:-The-HB-Gary-Email-That-Should-Concern-Us-All [dailykos.com]

PERTINENT QUOTES/EXCERPTS:

"According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HBGary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated "persona management" software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online... And all of this is for the purposes of infiltration, data mining, and (here's the one that really worries me) ganging up on bloggers, commenters and otherwise "real" people to smear enemies and distort the truth... "

and

"They are talking about creating the illusion of consensus. And consensus is a powerful persuader... And another thing, this is just one little company of assholes. I can't believe there aren't others doing this already. From oil companies, political campaigns, PR firms, you name it. Public opinion means big bucks. And let's face it, what these guys are talking about is easy."

and

"To the extent that the propaganda technique known as "Bandwagon" is an effective form of persuasion, which it definitely is, the ability for a few people to infiltrate a blog or social media site and appear to be many people, all taking one position in a debate, all agreeing, for example, that so and so is not credible, or a crook, is an incredibly powerful weapon."

This takes the cake, as to how "PR Firms" pull crap, in "Confessions of a Shill" (pulling crap on anti-semitic stuff):

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread826545/pg1&addstar=1&on=13829871#pid13829871 [abovetopsecret.com]

Unbelievable... but, there it is, along with ALL THE OTHER PROOF just above!

I've also caught scumbags here doing that - amateurs!

Tomhudson/Barbara, not Barbie = SAME PERSON, & was caught in the act red-handed doing it (email accounts were the same on BOTH accounts - I pointed this out? He/She is nowhere to be SEEN on this site since May 2012 in fact!)

Her "pal" (same person) webmistressrachel got a "bit bent" & threatened me in this manner for it, quoting her verbatim in fact on it (using nefarious 'tricks' like TOR to hide it, and her multiple accounts he/she uses in fact):

"I'm known for teasing apk" - by webmistressrachel (903577) on Tuesday January 01, @12:00AM (#42438977) Journal

FROM -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3350243&cid=42438977 [slashdot.org]

BUT, also via ac trolling/stalking/harassing posts, via nefarious means (proxying onion routers):

"Screw you, apk, and the horse you rode in on. If I ever see you post here again, I'll bomb you as AC from Tor, meaning I'll NEVER run out of posts because I can change endpoint..." - by webmistressrachel (903577) on Sunday July 03 2011, @02:03PM (#36647614)

APK

P.S.=> IN any event - to my 'naysayers' whom I challenge to disprove my points in the post I just replied to?

You CAN'T WIN - many are getting 'wise' to your games, & know I am telling the truth!

Animats/John Nagle, a member here no less who himself contributed to the IP stack itself & I respect him immensely for it, unlike MOST here (especially trolls) said it best on advertisers & the web -> http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3359149&cid=42482289 [slashdot.org]

Many here read beneath the bogus moderation threshold that hides AC posts and then you have the multiple account using trolls in the employ of advertisers doing the rest to *try* to effetely & vainly "hide" truths from you via unjust down moderations on the busted so-called 'moderation system' here...

What a joke it is, purely based on the above & evidences I produced nobody can deny as they are, fact!

Nearly all your posts are down moderated. They're terrified of you. You tell the truth is why.

Thank-You: I know (on 2 grounds)... apk (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#42573693)

Stemming from "the root of ALL 'evil'" - the "holy dollar" & greed! I mean, seriously - how much $ does a man need? Enough perhaps to leave his kids a legacy & have a good life right??

WRONG - not for those with what I call "a virus of the spirit" called GREED...

That TYPE is worse than heroin junkies, & enough is NEVER enough. I suppose when you're stuck with a 2" penis, it's the only help they have, lol... it's gotta be that, or something is PSYCHOLOGICALLY missing for them to be that way!

They say "money is the only way to keep score"? Score of what?? Psychological inadequacy projecting itself??? Personally - I never judged a man by the thickness of his wallet, but by his deeds of service to others.

Anyhow/anyways: Here on how banks work -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3377363&cid=42567085 [slashdot.org] fucking us ALL over, hard!

---

Prhaps MORE DIRECTLY vs. 'concerned parties' here, on what custom hosts files can do for you as the end user of them (adversely affecting advertisers & those they pay, websites, as well - never mind they steal your bandwidth & MONEY YOU PAY YOUR ISP FOR ONLINE TIME MONTHLY as well as CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O translating to higher ELECTRIC BILLS, right?) -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3377363&cid=42566755 [slashdot.org]

APK

P.S.=> I'll have to thank Animats especially one day, in regard to the latter, since something he said helps my points immensely, & because of his deeds...

Why?

He's John Nagle (he contributed to the IP stack directly in fact, I respect him for it immensely, unlike many here, especially trolls that downmod all of my posts with NO real technical justification in computing or otherwise as to why - he's a "doer", not an "armchair quarterback talker" only)

For his statements on advertising on the web, here since said it best on advertisers & the web -> http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3359149&cid=42482289 [slashdot.org]

I challenge you FAIRLY to disprove my points here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3377363&cid=42566755 [slashdot.org]

* YOU CAN'T!

(I know it, YOU KNOW IT, & anyone else reading with 1/2 a brain does too...)

GO FOR IT - do so, point-by-point quoting me IF need be (in fact, that would be the PREFERRED METHOD, so you don't just 'skip over' what you cannot even BEGIN to touch!)

APK

P.S.=> Many have tried here - to date, since late 2007? NOT A SINGLE ONE OF YOU "naysayer trolls" has... fact, period!

Old News but some links from local Thai media... (4, Informative)

nickserv (1974794) | about a year and a half ago | (#42566843)

This story should have run nearly a week ago, he was arrested last Sunday GMT +7.

Here's a story about it from the Bangkok Post that ran on the 7th GMT +7 http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/crimes/329622/police-nab-suspect-wanted-for-hacking [bangkokpost.com]

Here's another from local media in Thailand. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Hacker-held-pending-extradition-30197522.html [nationmultimedia.com]

"The lawsuit states the suspect used the "spy eye" software to steal people's financial information through phony Web pages from 217 computer networks worldwide from December 2009 to September 2011. An arrest warrant was issued in the state of Georgia on December 21, 2011. US authorities later called on Thai police to nab him and also requested that he be detained pending extradition."

In the last couple years it seems that Thailand is trying to displace Canada as America's #1 bitch.

As you can see from the photos he's been all smiles from his arrest at the airport to the obligatory publicity photo op Thai police hold when they occasionally do their job and arrest someone.

How is using a bot to farm millions any different than what financial companies do?

When you pay interest, or management fees, or brokerage fees, you're doing it on purpose. You've shopped around, chosen the institution you want to do business with, made the choice to use their services and to pay what it costs. You really don't understand how that differs from someone who steals money by using compromised user accounts to take money against your will and without your knowledge?

Got arrested with $100M? (1)

GameboyRMH (1153867) | about a year and a half ago | (#42567157)

That's worse than getting caught in a police chase on a literbike. With $100M it's possible to make yourself impossible to arrest, worst case scenario you get yourself a nice mansion in the Mexican countryside and hire some ex-military gangsters to run your security.

No. (0)

Your little pipe dream scenario didn't help John McAffee. In the end the Belizian state started coming for his money. It started with the little fish biting at him, the barracudas then converged and he then decided to run before the sharks got there.

The problem with hiring mercenaries to "protect" you is they eventually realize there's no one to protect you against THEM.
