Fight You Own Muscles To Create Force-Feedback On Smartphones

samzenpus posted about a year and a half ago | from the isometric-gaming dept.

Input Devices 72

FatLittleMonkey writes "Researchers in Germany have developed a device that allows users of portable devices, such as smartphones, experience force-feedback from games using just their own muscles... and a small EMS device. When stimulated by a painless electric pulse, the player's arm moves the device in whichever direction the game commands. The player then fights the movement with their other muscles, creating a strong sensation that the device itself is bucking in their hands. According to the developers, users found the sensation much more realistic than traditional vibrotactile feedback. (Should make PvP more interesting too.)"

Re:Fight you muscles? (0)

Because that's bad grammar too! It should be "Fight Your Own Muscles" ("you're" is the contraction of "you are").

Seems like a pretty sweet application of EMS though.

Your organism does precisely that when it orgasms: little electric shocks. The only problem is figuring where, but genitals seem a good place to start rather than opening your cranium.

I'm guessing this doesn't have much use/appeal/real world applicability simply because there are no porn toys made with it yet :(

Re:Hmmm. (0)

I'm guessing this doesn't have much use/appeal/real world applicability simply because there are no porn toys made with it yet :(

But it'll be pretty easy to make new toys that are controlled via bluetooth, and allows games to control them when you "score". Multiplayer would be hella fun.

The other great part is the separation of concerns: game authors don't even have to advertise compatibility. It's just another bluetooth human interface device.

It's like watching something die in slow-motion. What with the ever-desperate titles and articles, and the frequency with which Slashdot spews them out. Heck, most of those articles don't even break the 100-comment mark despite being geeky and/or interesting. People just don't bother anymore. It's really sad.

Re:Slashdot is getting worse by the day (1)

reboot246 (623534) | about a year and a half ago | (#42780721)

Yes, slashdot is getting worse. What with editors who can't spell and users who don't know basic English grammar, it has become painful to read anything here.

You would think that since most people here are educated, the commentary would be a little more intelligent. It's like reading comments from a bunch of twelve year olds. I guess we're watching the Beavis and Butthead generation now in their thirties.

aaronb1138 (2035478) | about a year and a half ago | (#42778257)

Seriously, why are we just now getting to implement technology ideas from movies and TV from the 80's. The technology (EMS / NMS) has been around in compact form factor for just as long too.

Then again, I was working on touch screen based point of sale systems in the 90's and couldn't understand why nobody cared to consumerize the technology outside of specialty industrial niches. In all honesty though, part of the motivation was just to make head shots in Quake with my finger.

Re:Tech is so far behind... (1)

aaronb1138 (2035478) | about a year and a half ago | (#42778825)

I'm not talking about ideas for which there is no current implementation. I'm talking speaking specifically about fusions of technology where both the idea and the parts to implement just sat on the shelf unexplored.

Re:Tech is so far behind... (0)

Dreaming it up is easy.. demonstrating it is easy.. putting into practical usage is hard.

Tablets have been floating around imagination for decades, there were several prototypes/demonstrations and attempts at commercialization but it was only recently that it's gotten a hold.

Satellites... Arthur C. Clark... Sputnik... DirectTV.

EMS has been around forever. And yes they can be pretty small now... but you still have to stick pads in the right places and typically you need to apply some sort of conduction gel to make it painless. I don't see this going outside the lab/demo stage.
