Capcom Remastering DuckTales Game

Classic Games (Games) 94

jones_supa writes "Many Slashdotters are probably aware of the 1989 Nintendo Entertainment System platformer classic DuckTales (video, designed around the Disney cartoon series. Capcom announced today at their PAX East panel that they are resurrecting the beloved game. Developed by Wayforward and Capcom, DuckTales: Remastered is something of a remake based on the original version. The embedded video shows some solid back-to-basics platformer action. The game will be out this summer for Xbox Live, PSN, and Wii U."

Ironically, your comment had a similar effect on the geeky part of my brain.

You'd apparently posted a "reply" to something SCPRedMage said, which confused me briefly- nothing in their comment bore any relation to what was quoted and "replied to". I couldn't see any hidden comments, so... WTF was up with the nesting?

Until I twigged that your comment *had* been posted in that position but had nothing to do with the "parent"- you were in fact quoting (and addressing) the summary, but hadn't posted it as a top-level reply.

Hmm. This would have absolutely *nothing* to do with the fact that posting your comment in its correct (top level, end of thread chronological) position would have been much less favourable to its prominence than as an off-topic "reply" to the highest-placed "leaf comment" in the thread... would it?

umm, duh? What's the point of making an awesome comment if it gets buried at the bottom and nobody reads it?

Er, yeah. Bad news if you think your comment was so damn "awesome" that it warranted that tedious attention grabbing... it wasn't. :-)

Basically, if everyone was as egotistical as you and followed the same trick every time, we'd end up- in effect- with strict chronological ordering and no nesting, which is a PITA to follow. As it would be if even a significant fraction of commenters did that (it'd still make the nesting near worthless).

All designs are brilliant until you add human nature to the equation. What we have here is a Tragedy of the Forums. Game theory curricula will eventually pick up on it.

Crusading against this widespread tactic will wear you out quickly. Perhaps you should start a campaign for automatic thread folding or something?

I enjoyed this game (1)

pecosdave (536896) | about a year ago | (#43252145)

I was a little too old for the cartoon series at the time, but I really enjoyed the game none the less. It broke the rule I went by during that era:

Game based on move = bad
Movie Based on game = bad

It was usually true - though less solid now it's still a consideration.

Re:I enjoyed this game (4, Interesting)

Hatta (162192) | about a year ago | (#43252335)

It's a Capcom platformer. The original was basically Mega Man with Duck Tales skins. That rules. Capcom has done pretty well with its retro-modern Mega Man games, so I expect this to be good as well.

If you're looking for another decent NES platformer along these lines, I recommend Chip & Dales' Rescue Rangers. Two player is quite fun!

Re:I enjoyed this game (1)

pecosdave (536896) | about a year ago | (#43252471)

I loved Rescue Rangers too. Same story, too old for the cartoon, but the game was a blast. I used to like to throw a box then get back on top of it.

Re:I enjoyed this game (0)

Fun story about C&DRR: I'd played it a few times on the NES (which had migrated to my grandmother's house), so grabbed a ROM to show it to a friend. Played co-op, and he was dead by the end of the first level. We made a deal that we'd stop once I died. I then completed the game without a single death.

Re:I enjoyed this game (1)

My grandmother played Super Mario Brothers and Tetris.

Re:I enjoyed this game (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43276979)

It's been a while the first NES gave up the ghost and got replaced by a jumble sale one, and when that started giving out we got her an old PC running various emulators and a few native games. (I should probably get that upgraded at some point, working along the lines of the obligatory xkcd [xkcd.com] .) Anyway, aside from Chip and Dale, she definitely played a lot of Donkey Kong Country 2 [wikipedia.org] ... She had Ironsword [wikipedia.org] , but I don't think she played it much (when I played it for years I was too scared to play past the first level)... She also had Jack Nicklaus golf [wikipedia.org] , although I'm not sure how much she played it (thanks to a spillage there was a bug in one hole where it would randomly change colours occasionally)... Obviously SMB was played... There was also Jurassic Park [wikipedia.org] in French, as I picked it up in a retro game shop I found in Strasbourg (it was the only one that looked like it might be in English, as there was no French text on the cartridge---it was sold unboxed). Beyond that, my memory fails me.

Re:I enjoyed this game (1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43255063)

I would love to see the original NES version as an optional "feature" when they do release it for XBox 360. In other words, a choice between the newer and older version.

Re:I enjoyed this game (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43252399)

I've never seen a good movie based on a game. However, the quality of games based on movies usually goes up as the time since the movie came out goes up.

When the game comes out first (1)

tepples (727027) | about a year ago | (#43253291)

I've never seen a good movie based on a game.

Is Mortal Kombat on Netflix? Is Wreck-It Ralph, Disney's answer to the webcomic Kid Radd, coming to DVD any time soon?

However, the quality of games based on movies usually goes up as the time since the movie came out goes up.

But it gets confusing when a game is based on the early scripts of a movie while the movie is stuck in rewrite hell. Then you end up with Ecks vs. Sever. Decent [wikipedia.org] games [wikipedia.org] , horrible film [wikipedia.org] .

Re:When the game comes out first (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43255611)

Best video game movies by far are Wreck It Ralph and Scott Pilgrim, neither of which are direct adaptations from video games but rather just have gaming at their heart. Second tier is Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat, one for atmosphere nailing, the other for just being that over-the-top cheesy.

Fan Game? Umm, Capcom had a bit of a hand in the development and release of that game. A fan may have started it, but Capcom came around and finished the project and released it - OFFICIALLY.

Re:Fuck you Capcom, give us a Mega Man game... (0)

Re:Fuck you Capcom, give us a Mega Man game... (1)

TriezGamer (861238) | about a year ago | (#43255827)

Spoken like a spoiled child, really. We've ALREADY had two new Megaman games (Megaman 9 and Megaman 10 -- not to be confused with Megaman X) in the vein of the originals in the last five years. Given that they seem to have sold well, odds are they're also working on Megaman 11.

Re:Fuck you Capcom, give us a Mega Man game... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43256017)

You obviously don't know anything about how many Mega Man games Capcom has cancelled in the past 5-10 years. Or the fact that we've only had two Mega Man Classic games since the SNES (9 and 10). Or the fact that there hasn't been an X series game since 2004 (X8). And don't get me started on the abomination that is called Legends. Sorry, but Madden fans are more spoiled than Mega Man fans. 2012 was supposed to be the 25th anniversary of Mega Man, and Capcom promised new titles. So far, all we've had is a shitty fan game, and a middle finger during the DuckTales announcement.

Sounds more like desperation to me (1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43252379)

...seriously? An HD remake of the licensed Ducktales game? THAT'S Capcom's next step in their desperate grab for 90s nostalgia bucks that they seem to be stuck on? REALLY?

Look, maybe it's just that I somehow avoided contracting terminal child-of-the-90s syndrome, but... seriously, Capcom? You're just getting desperate now, aren't you?

Re:Sounds more like desperation to me (3, Insightful)

MindlessAutomata (1282944) | about a year ago | (#43252689)

You didn't play this game back during the NES days, did you? This game was so good it's one of the few NES games I remember at all from my very early youth. A remake of a very old but very good game? This isn't nostalgia because of DuckTales per se, it's because this game was a shining gem of the console.

The reason they are remaking old games is because there's a niche in the market for people that want to play games that played like older games, because game design has shifted since then, not necessarily for better or worse but because of the general trend over time. Point-and-click adventure games are also making a slight comeback (see TellTales's success on that front along with various indie groups). Look at how many Halo-esque or military FPSes are released these days and tell me that this isn't something of a breath of fresh air.

Re:Sounds more like desperation to me (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43253175)

Even the Angry Video Game Nerd couldn't find anything bad to say about it. Except for the part where Scrooge jumps out of a mine cart, apparently leaving his nephews to fall to their doom.

Re:Sounds more like desperation to me (0)

starting with viewtiful joe, people started noticing them again, and they showed what they were good at. 2D games. Keep it up capcom, I would rather play 20 ducktales than suffer though the thought of another fucking survival horror snorefest, or shitty metroid prime wanna be

DrGamez (1134281) | about a year ago | (#43252539)

So other than the cool songs it had, does anyone really think Ducktales was some great game? I can only remember vague memories of it as a child, and while I liked it - I also liked just about any video game at the time.

Not that it's really doing to cost them a ton of money to make this, but I wonder if there wasn't another old classic they could have remastered that has more appeal than a game with a single (really good) memorable song.

lurker1997 (2005954) | about a year ago | (#43252691)

I have great memories of the game. Would have last played it in 1991 though when I was still a pre-teen. What I remember appealing to me was that there were lots of hidden places to go and items to get (it was coins right ? diamonds as well, I think different sizes if them?), and you could break stuff by jumping on it with your cane. The hidden areas were easy enough that I could find them without trouble as a young kid, but there were enough of them that you were always finding more stuff and it made the game appealing to come back to.

Re:Neat, but Why? (1)

MindlessAutomata (1282944) | about a year ago | (#43252737)

Yes, a lot of people do, I thought it was a very good game during my youth, and since most of the people that played the game back then didn't exactly have internet access or not at all like we do now, it appears that this consensus was arrived at entirely by the young gamers of that era. It's regarded as one of the best platformers of the console.

No kidding...releasing a beloved series only partially is such a douchey move, let alone doing it over, and over, and over...thereby screwing over their biggest fans, forcing them to resort to bootlegs to flesh out the series. I firmly believe they plan these partial releases from the beginning, and that actual sales has nothing to do with it. They obviously don't give a rat's ass about the franchises at any rate.

I bet sales have something to do with it. They'll sell the first 3 of 4 seasons, then wait until sales dry up, and then sell all four seasons as a box set. Season 4 will never be sold separately.

The next night I had a friend over, and I made it up to the last boss (Duckula, was it?... I mean, it was a vampire duck... so...), and I called the Nintendo Game Counselors about the game. They hadn't gotten to that point yet. I finally knew I was better than Seattle college students at that point at something (and the same thing happened when Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers came out the next year). Yeah, Capcom's Disney games were kinda easy, but REALLY fun.

The song from the Moon [youtube.com] is in the top 10 best NES songs on many lists. They need to make sure that they don't break it.

Capcom ruled NES music. The "SupraDarky" best video game music list has it at #40 - out of all systems' songs.

I hope Capcom is having IntiCreates make it.

I've never understood why the Moon song is always the one that gets mentioned; African Mines [youtube.com] was the JAM!

It is literally the catchiest tune in existence.

Second place goes to Doug.

Third goes to the Gummi Bears.

OK, Time to make many DLCs. Launch two more retail versions of the game in the next months... HEY! Capcom has to pay a lot of licensing fees to Mr. Scrooge!
