Systemd Ditches GNU C Library for Their Own

Unknown Lamer posted about a year ago | from the watch-the-world-fork dept.

GNU is Not Unix 92

In his typical fashion of replacing perfectly working software with useless broken-by-design crap, our dearest Lennart has decided that the time has come for systemd to gain an email program. He determined that the GNU libc was insufficient for the task of a dbus-enabled cpu hogging email client, leading to the new systemd libc: " Technically, this move makes perfectly sense, too. We are sick of supporting unstable glibc APIs and ABIs, and we believe that we greatly benefit from the fact that we now finally have everything the OS userspace consists of in one single repository. Of course, this new libc is not available to Ubuntu and other Linux distributions that have not yet adopted systemd. However, after deliberately choosing a home-grown display server (Wayland) over the generally accepted one (Mir) we decided creating an incompatible libc would be the best approach to create a strong platform following a strict release cadence."

On the bright side "We also renamed the API call creat() to create()..."

The thing that I totally hate is trying to figure out what is a joke and what isn't. I am not educated enough on this particular topic to know obviously if it is a joke or not. Should I just automatically assume that there will be NO news on this site today, or is it possible that some real news might actually slip through?

Haha, let me answer that with a story. For one halloween back at the geek compound, I dressed up as a cop. I had the uniform (found it in Taco's closet next to the gimp suit) and some LED lights from thinkgeek that I put on the slashdot pt cruiser. Anyhow, I'm parked in the geek compound driveway (just got back from a jaeger run) when I see samzenpus stumble outside and start taking a piss on the scarecrow. So I flash the lights, get out, shine my led keyfob at him and tell him "Sir, I'm officer Dick Hurts. Have you been drinking?" Then I whip out my cock and say "Ok, I'm going to need a breathalyzer test. Place my dick in your mouth and suck." And he did!

Lol, yeah, anyhow samzenpus does get fooled quite easily.

Stealing Lennart's joke (4, Insightful)

steveha (103154) | about a year ago | (#43332605)

If you click on the link, you will find out that this isn't just a made-up Slashdot story; it was Lennart's joke. He said they are doing a replacement libc now, they plan to make systemd into an email client (a clear reference to Zawinski's Law), and they figure they will add an OS kernel someday, a gentle poke at GNU/HURD (it was right there in that post).

I'm not the biggest fan of April Fools humor, but at least in this case it was someone poking fun partially at himself.

Does adding a nasty, flamebait summary make the joke better?

In his typical fashion of replacing perfectly working software with useless broken-by-design crap, our dearest Lennart has decided that the time has come for systemd to gain an email program. He determined that the GNU libc was insufficient for the task of a dbus-enabled cpu hogging email client

Really? Really, Unknown Lamer? Did you actually think this vitriol is funny?

Re:Stealing Lennart's joke (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#43333085)

It's called parody. Look it up.

You could be forgiven if you're not from North America or Western Europe. Most people around the world don't get the intense parody, sarcasm, and ironic commentary that's become commonplace in those two areas, and would, like you, mistake it as being insincere or in poor taste.

Re:Stealing Lennart's joke (1, Insightful)

Rob_Bryerton (606093) | about a year ago | (#43333413)

Why is it vitriol? This guy's software is *shit*; pure, unadulterated shit. The only thing more fucked up than the shit he releases is that it's getting picked up by some distros. And for what? What problem does systemd solve? Ooh, can we boot faster? Who fucking cares? Who the hell turns off a computer in this day and age? It's a pure ripoff of Apple's (shitty) launchd. This stuff is replacing decades-proven systems, overcomplicating things, and for what? Either for the sake of change, or to mimic Apple.

This is a disturbing trend in open source software that will drive users away. I know nobody gives a shit, but this kind of trash software development will do further damage to Linux distros and drive technical users to *BSD or other platforms IMO. What happened to simplicity?

Guys (and gals), there is a point when some piece of software is feature-complete. The only reason most dev's add features to finished software is because that is what paying customers demand. But you don't have paying customers. You don't need to keep adding shit to your software. Finish it and move into maintenence mode and start a new project.

No I'm not trolling today, I'm just very passionate about this subject, and hate to see the damage it's doing to the Linux ecosystem. I'm just waiting for a registry-type system to be implemented by this asshole.

And Lennart: PLEASE, fuck off and die. Seriously. Now go ahead: mod me down ya' spineless cowards.

Re:Stealing Lennart's joke (1)

semi-extrinsic (1997002) | about a year ago | (#43340535)

AFAIK, the reason for ArchLinux atleast adapting systemd is that it will eventually be the standard init for most Linux distros, such that each distro will have to spend less time maintaining and updating something which the end user cares little about.

And there aren't really that many gripes with systemd. I have found that it overrides some power management settings on my laptop, but that's somewhat expected, and I quickly updated the settings to my liking. systemd also makes a more noisy initialization of the sound card than sysvinit did, which I haven't been able to debug/understand.
