Remote Island Adopts Dothraki Language

samzenpus posted about a year and a half ago | from the it-is-known dept.

Books 65

An anonymous reader writes "The tiny island of Tristan da Cunha is officially the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world with few connections to the outside and access only by sea when the notoriously stormy south Atlantic co-operates which is not often. Entertainment options are limited and LARPing in Game of Thrones style has become massively popular, so much so that the islanders have declared Dothraki to be an official language, alongside English."

There's an Easter egg at rot13.com - if you cypher that text it actually gives you the rot13 of "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming".

This is your punishment for reading /. on April 1st. I think it is the best. I hope that for next year they say they close the site and not post anything at all.

Re:ROT13 (1)

cervesaebraciator (2352888) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333429)

After this, few will see the joke next year because few will bother visiting the site. Maybe it's all an elaborate scheme to reduce the number of "days read in a row" awards they hand out. Those things get expensive.

Re:ROT13 (1)

Jarik C-Bol (894741) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333567)

No, our punishment for april fools day is later in the week, when the associated press runs some of the bullshit from today as a real news story. (In their grand tradition of not paying attention to what the hell they are doing.)

But this year I was impressed, because they proved it could.

Re:ROT13 (1)

chrism238 (657741) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333465)

Traditionally, an April Fool's joke played after 12noon turns the 'fool' back on the originator. Perhaps we just have to wait 30 more minutes for Hawaii?

Unsubscribing (was: Re:ROT13) (1)

grahamtriggs (572707) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333467)

I only keep up with Slashdot via the RSS feed.

The stupid decision to ROT13 everything as a joke (which has gone on far too long anyway), makes the RSS feed entirely unusable. It basically makes my decision much easier - I'll unsubscribe from the RSS feed. Which basically means I'll see articles / visit this site way, way less frequently in the future.

I'm not sure what's funnier; seeing all you whiners kvetch about rot13 all day, or the fact that you got modded +5 Informative for that.

Slashdot, you may have outdone yourselves today.

Invasion (1)

theduk3 (2598409) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333189)

I for one would welcome a Dothraki invasion by those islanders. I look forward to shivering at the mere mention of our name, looting, pillaging and wreaking havoc. As long as I'm back home in time to watch the next Game of Thrones episode, that is.

Re:Invasion (1)

bfandreas (603438) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333239)

Have you read the sequel by Jules Verne? It takes a Frenchman to untangle the mess an American left. Still haven't got a clue what that was about. Neither had Verne.
(Apart from the obvious escalation of crisis after crisis in a dead-end version of a Bildungsroman)

Case study in overkill (1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#43333193)

If sites like Hacker News are taking off, it's cause editors of /. don't understand their readers.

This gag was barely funny the first time. Now it just reminds me what a sad fossil this site is.

Slashdot had some good gags, but they would've worked well with the flow of news, not against it. All the lame stories could have been real stories and the gags would have been just fine. Achievements and OMG Ponies are among the ones I'm thinking of. Either make all the stories lame jokes or make the site itself a lame joke. Making them both lame jokes is just plain lame.

In case you don't feel like decrypting (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year and a half ago | (#43333221)

The remote island they are referring to is Staten Island.

And they adopted it before A Game of Thrones was written which is weird.

Re:In case you don't feel like decrypting (4, Funny)

Austerity Empowers (669817) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333293)

As someone who lived on Staten Island most of his life, I can say for certain the native language there is not Dothraki, nor is that commonly spoken there as to know about it you'd have to be able to read. The usual dialect spoken there sounds a lot like "HAYHAYVINNIEMYMAN! Howyadoon, longtimenosee, youan fuckin Joey dont fuckin come out no more!", which is basically the formal way of saying "Hello, I'm about to punch you on the back."

Interesting place (2)

xaxa (988988) | about a year and a half ago | (#43333419)

This island, and the "nearby" St Helena, are interesting places.

One of my colleagues is from St Helena, population about 4000. She grew up on the island, and remoteness and cost of travel is so high that the first time she ever left it was age 18, to attend university in the UK. Both island groups are UK overseas territories, and receive British TV, news etc, but I'm not sure that's much preparation for actually living in a country where we call a settlement of 4000 people a "village".

There remoteness also gives them unique flora and fauna

Until this very moment, I never thought I could use the word "LARP" and "cool" in the same sentence, but this sounds pretty cool.

Re:Please let this not be an AFD joke (1)

Does indeed sound like it could be a blast.. not that I've ever tried LARPing but still, if they have dragons AND women (not bearded men in a medieval dress) then I am there.. maybe.
