UK Town of Ipswich Remodelled As Zelda Level

timothy posted about 10 months ago | from the every-legend-needs-a-map dept.

United Kingdom 53

cyclomedia writes "Switch Fringe is a relatively new not-for-profit annual music and arts festival in the UK town of Ipswich, and this year's program features a full page map of the town with details about each venue. Unlike most other maps this one is in the form of a Zelda level. This is in part due to this year's theme 'Re-imagining Ipswich,' that PixelH8 is coming out of semi-retirement to play a gig during the proceedings and possibly due to the fact that the map's designer — The Decibel Kid — spent too much time playing Zelda on a Gameboy Color during the first Web bubble."

Uh (5, Informative)

They didn't remodel the town, they made a map of the town that looks like a Zelda map.

I was super disappointed when I followed each Link (teehee) and didn't find a town that physically looked like the world of Zelda.

if the town was truly remodeled, you'd probably have more than a handful of people attempting to cut down the shrubs for rupees.

I blame the Internet. If this were the 15th century, you'd most likely only find the map in a book since most pople wouldn't be able to visit Ipswich anyway. That means fewer opportunities to get super disappointed. Also, most people wouldn't have problems with the map being slightly stylized. And the book itself would be printed in a cool gothic typeface to boot.

hattig (47930) | about 10 months ago | (#44047387)

The map is accurate - there's a streetwalker (well, a womble with a cauldron?) in the red light district near the football stadium - I presume they're still there despite the serial killer prostitute murders a few years ago.

Still, it's been 12 years since I lived near Ipswich, and 15 since I spent a summer living in Ipswich (Norwich Road, top left of map).

There really isn't a lot to do in Ipswich, this map is probably the town's crowning achievement.

All together now.... (3, Insightful)

LAME!

Misleading title, stupid concept, and a complete waste of my time. Is this r/boring?

Re:All together now.... (0)

LAME!

I disagree

Misleading title,

I agree, but what was the true likelihood of that happening?

stupid concept,

I disagree. I think it's cute. It doesn't serve much purpose beyond novelty, but it's still pretty cool.

and a complete waste of my time.

Most likely

bummer (3, Funny)

Darn, I wanted them to go with my idea of upgrading the town's name to Ipv6swich

Re:bummer (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44047515)

Well we do have the IP6 postcode. Unfortunately it's out of town in a very rural part of Suffolk. I don't think they have electricity there yet, never mind IPv6

That's "Ipv6switch" with a T, I think.

Title is inverted (3, Interesting)

the_other_chewey (1119125) | about 10 months ago | (#44039843)

The title is the wrong way around.

Fix: "Zelda level modelled after town of Ipswich". And it's not even playable...

Re:Title is inverted (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44047427)

OK, so I suck at English. Would love to have made it playable but didn't get time (took 2 weeks as it is, between my full time job, children, sleeping etc.)

I'm from Ipswich, it's nice to see the town portrayed like that. Only wish it could be like that in real life.

Unfortunately, you're still going to get arrested for breaking into houses and smashing all of the jars.

Only if the plods round here can actually be bothered getting off their fat arses.

They didn't remodel nor use a Zelda level (1)

backwardsposter (2034404) | about 10 months ago | (#44040075)

The town isn't based off of a level in Zelda. They simply used Zelda graphics, handheld or A Link to the Past graphics from the looks of it. Neat I guess, but not nearly as neat as if they'd modeled it after an original Zelda temple or something. Maybe not a water temple, if the fans are anything like my friends they wouldn't make it out without calling me first.

Re:They didn't remodel nor use a Zelda level (1)

interval1066 (668936) | about 10 months ago | (#44040389)

Yeah, the online guide/map thingie is styled after Zeld gfx, we get it. It is a cute little widget. Too bad the /. headline is so damaged.

Re:They didn't remodel nor use a Zelda level (1)

gl4ss (559668) | about 10 months ago | (#44040847)

the trees are zelda style. but otherwise it looks a bit generic.

(oh and a zelda: a link to the past is a zelda..)

Any other game? (1)

nherm (889807) | about 10 months ago | (#44040375)

Well I think we all agree that this story was a massive dissapointment. Does anybody know about a level from any videogame reproduced in real life?

The whole map is... (1)

Shame their web UI is stuck in the 1990's along with their mapping technology.

Re:The whole map is... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44047437)

"Mapping Technology". The png is only 250k, seems a bit extreme to chop it into tiles. And the website was a freebie, so we can't complain too much (we're a voluntary / nonprofit setup). Irony is that coding/development is my day job, but I don't want to step on the toes of the company that provided it. Which means I'll not be offering an opinion about the quality of their work :)

Great, I unwittingly clicked on a link to facebook from the office. I can't wait to explain this in triplicate to IT Security. Can we label these links better?

Re:Facebook? (1)

unrtst (777550) | about 10 months ago | (#44040929)

Can we label these links better?

The "https://www.facebook.com" in the URL didn't give it away?

Never click on links without looking at where they go, especially on slashdot.
In addition, go to tinyurl.com, click on "Preview Feature", and enable preview. Change any tinyurl links to preview.tinyurl.com (the preview cookie doesn't always work).

Re: Facebook? (0)

Hadlock (143607) | about 10 months ago | (#44041169)

So if Slashdot posts a link to hardcore porn, it's my fault that I clicked on it thinking that link would be work safe? Slashdot is dominated by people who work in IT, if it's users can't trust the site to post only work safe links, they're going to lose a lot of traffic that their paying advertisers are targeting. Other "work safe" news sites avoid directly linking to social websites without explicitly saying so for this exact reason.

Re: Facebook? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44041459)

Yes, it is your fault.

CaptainOfSpray (1229754) | about 10 months ago | (#44041461)

The town is a pit of despair. I sincerely hope, for all your sakes, that this does NOT put Ipswich "on the map". FFS, this place has only just made it to the 20th C (rough end of).

God help anyone who mentions Adastral Park, because I won't hold back.

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (0)

Cool, I just came home from work at BT Adastral Park.

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44042241)

I lived in Ipswich for 17 years. It's a dump, but the residents act like it is the cream of the crop. It's some sort of cream; cream that has been left out in the sun to curdle.

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (1)

rjforster (2130) | about 10 months ago | (#44044187)

This resident thinks it's a dump. But then I only moved here for work and I'm more than willing to move away again for the right other work.

Still, it's a slashdot story which make me say "oooh, I can see my house" so that at least puts a mild grin on my face.

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44044573)

To be fair, it's not the greatest town in the world. But believe me, there are plenty of worse places.

Want to find a REAL shit-hole in Suffolk? Try visiting Brandon. Or Leiston. Or Lowestoft. Or worst of all, Haverhill - a town which, if Suffolk had haemorrhoids would be the place to apply the cream.

And you want to try some of the places I know in east Lancashire. Believe me, even Haverhill is sweet compared to Rochdale, where I had the misfortune to live for eight years.

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44044997)

i hear they had a party when you left and the town picked up afterwards. prehaps it was you not them

Re:I live in/near Ipswich (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#44047457)

Ipswich is full of musicians, poets, artists, designers and allsorts of other creative types. Switch Fringe hopes to get the ball rolling on getting some of these people recognised and in turn raising the town's profile and general grooviness. Or we could just sit at home moaning on the internet and hoping someone else puts in the work.

I live in this town. I read the local paper and listen to the local radio. And this is the FIRST I have heard of this festival.
Perhaps telling people locally about it might have been a good idea?
