GNU MediaGoblin 0.5.0 "Goblin Force" Released

timothy posted about a year ago | from the livin'-on-a-prayer-halfway-there dept.

Software 42

paroneayea writes "MediaGoblin 0.5.0 Goblin Force is released with a slew of new features: authentication plugins including OpenID and Mozilla Persona support, a new notification system, a new "reprocessing framework", and more! The project is also making progress towards its long-awaited federation goals via the Pump API, as used in pump.io. Rockin'!" (If the name doesn't ring a bell, Wikipedia helps: MediaGoblin is "a free, decentralized Web platform (server software) for hosting and sharing digital media.")

Now with all those dead features. (4, Funny)

Lets bundle all the unpopular GNU products together to make one really unpopular one and try to make it sound like the greatest thing sense sliced bread.

You chose the wrong software vendor.

Lulz, you are on Slashdot poor bot. You are literally the only one here who has had the sex, let alone left their parent's basement.

Sucks for you. I only have 6 more years until I'm a wizard.

Don't worry, I'm sure he regrets having sex with you too. Pro tip to the guys thinking of tapping a crazy girl's ass: I know you want to get your dick wet, but it's not worth it.

and try to make it sound like the greatest thing sense sliced bread.

Good luck to them in doing that while they're still giving their high-profile work ridiculous neckbeard titles like "GNU Media Goblin", "GNU SIP Witch", "GNU Tools Cauldron" (the GNU prefix is required; one or more of their devotees will show up and throw a shit fit over it in public if you omit it).

It's like the FSF want to embarass the FOSS world into avoiding them and the ideals they're preaching; they're like a church offering libre enlightenment but the only entrance is through a municipal sewage tunnel with no catwalks.

Nerdfest (867930) | about a year ago | (#44767905)

Right, because things like "Spotify" sc ream out "streaming media". Those names are fine, or at least there are many worse example.

Re:Now with all those dead features. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44768231)

False, Spotify is immensely better because it doesn't include 'Goblin' in it's name.

Re:Now with all those dead features. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44769289)

So if they change the name to FediaSpoblin is that better? No Goblins and it starts with the same letter as Facebook@!

Re:Now with all those dead features. (1)

mcgrew (92797) | about a year ago | (#44768141)

You think FOSS has a monopoly on idiotic names?

FOSS may have GIMP, but Microsoft has WiMP and WinCE. But software names are far less stupid than automobile names.

I just saw a truck in the parking lot with the trunk emblazoned "Toyota TRD". I had to do a double take, Toyota Turd? That's what it says in txtspk.

How about the Dodge Startus, er, Stratus? The Chevy Nova? "No va" is Spanish for "doesn't go." Worse yet is the KIA. What damned fool named a car company the military acronym for Killed In Action??

How about Nestea? Yassah, I'm gonna love me some o'thet Nasty!

Does your town have an oriental restaurant named the Dynasty? Come on, I'm going to eat in a restaurant named "die nasty"??

Re:Now with all those dead features. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44768497)

Everything after the 2nd line is totally irrelevant because they're not software.

Re:Now with all those dead features. (0)

Why are so many reading-handicapped people at slashdot these days? "But software names are far less stupid than automobile names."

mcgrew (92797) | about a year ago | (#44773379)

Chevrolet did reasonably well with the Nova in Latin America, even exceeding its sales projections in Venezuela. The story of the Chevy Nova is a classic example of an urban legend, a story that is told and retold so often that it is believed to be true even though it isn't. Like most other urban legends, there is some element of truth in the story (no va indeed means "it doesn't go")

ReÃr, es gracioso. Si, yo hablo poquito Espanol. I didn't say they couldn't sell them.

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44771709)

You think FOSS has a monopoly on idiotic names?

No, McTroll, but they have more stupid names than any other company or organization, hands down. Oh, and by the way, if you're going to list some names you thing are stupid, try spelling them correctly. (i.e. Stratus)

Re:Now with all those dead features. (1)

cupantae (1304123) | about a year ago | (#44773053)

"TRD" does remind me of turd, but all the other examples are absolutely ridiculous.

WIMP is not a product, and it's the only word you can make out of those letters. It's memorable. I think it's a lot better than PWIM.
It's not Wince, it's Windows CE. Kia is not Kay-eye-ay, it's Kee-ah.
Nestea: interesting. I have never thought of that. Dynasty: not interesting. In fact, the thought of being more reminded of "die nasty" than actual dynasties tells me you need a better education.

You're All Wrong (573825) | about a year ago | (#44767435)

heck, get all modern and fancy, and serve that directory of files using httpd instead.

Yet another "yet another..." ...

Re:ftpd (1)

Fwipp (1473271) | about a year ago | (#44767671)

Does anyone actually _use_ MediaGoblin? Their wiki lists a couple of sites, but they all seem a lot more "I installed this to try it out" and much less "this serves a need for me."

Re:ftpd (1)

Dishwasha (125561) | about a year ago | (#44767937)

That's what's great about MediaGoblin being a GNU project. People have the freedom to never use it.

OpenID (3, Informative)

brianerst (549609) | about a year ago | (#44767615)

Ironically OpenID support is announced the same day that myOpenID announces it's shutting down.

(Yeah, I know, OpenID is all over these days, but it's still funny/sad.)

Re:OpenID (2)

rimugu (701444) | about a year ago | (#44767805)

Aren't we confusing OpenID witn MyOpenID ? It seems OpenID is live and kicking.

Re:OpenID (1)

brianerst (549609) | about a year ago | (#44767855)

Yeah, myOpenID is just an implementation of OpenID. That it was sort-of the first and most open version is the ironic bit - GNU MediaGoblin is mostly going to have to rely on closed implementations (Facebook, Google, Yahoo, etc.) of the standard to do the actual authenticating.

Re:OpenID (1)

mcgrew (92797) | about a year ago | (#44768159)

I was going to try it out but I couldn't get in the site. It didn't seem slashdotted, it just seemed to not work. Now I see why.

Thanks Editor. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44767617)

Had no fucking clue what a 'Media Goblin' is, other than the fact that it must be GNU-related because it's got an incredibly shitty name.

Seriously, branding exists for a reason. Media Goblin sounds like something that steals (and/or defecates on) my files.

Re:Thanks Editor. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44767863)

You're not a nerd.

Please move to a site which is sympathetic to "branding" and all that shit.

sobolwolf (1084585) | about a year ago | (#44767747)

don't look a gift horse in the mouth? Say thanks or just STFU. Maybe it's not the best it can be, but it is free and maybe, just maybe there is some hot source code under the hood that may fuel something you may laud in the future. Now run along and make something better or, as most of you couldn't code for two shits, go use instagram or some other spyware disguised in pretty UI.

Re:Ever heard of (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#44768293)

You just summed up exactly why people don't use free software. Because instead of taking criticism and comments, you get fucking defensive at step one.

Most people don't give a shit about why it's free, how they can view the source code. They just want something that works, that isn't named like it's going to rape your files.

Free software has a reputation for telling users to fuck off or fix it themselves, as if everyone is a programmer. If you don't want people to use your software, don't fucking code and promote it to begin with.

Re:Ever heard of (1)

sobolwolf (1084585) | about a year ago | (#44776605)

You call this and the other nasty posts "constructive criticism"... hmmm. Fuck off or fix it for yourself, that's right... or, heaven forbid, pay someone that has a clue to fix what you don't like. Buy your own fuckin' beer for once.

Gobblin Force... (1)

Dogtanian (588974) | about a year ago | (#44768439)

"Goblin Force" sounds like either (a) a really goofy, family-oriented fantasy movie that's the favourite of the kid who always gets beaten up in middle school (*), or (b) a pornographic movie that has absolutely *nothing* to do with mythical creatures.

(*) Partly because he's the kind of kid geeky enough to like "Goblin Force" and partly because he was naive enough to actually *admit* that "Goblin Force" was his favourite film.

Wiki of Things? Blog Platform? (1)

Jonah Hex (651948) | about a year ago | (#44771693)

I already use Wordpress for posting articles, but I'd rather have something that allows me to have a more open wiki structure to ideas, scripts, etc. So is this a blog/media/wiki all in one? Or should I just try bolting a wiki onto my wordpress and hope they support using a single user database some day. (it's been a while since I've checked into Wordpress/Wiki integration so that may already have happened) - HEX

Re:Wiki of Things? Blog Platform? (1)

wertigon (1204486) | about a year ago | (#44774033)

Not quite.

Imagine Youtube. You post videos, right?

GMG is like Youtube. Except, you don't only post videos. You post one item, which can be any number of different media - an article or "blog post", a song, a video, a 3D-rendered image, a video game... Anything. People may comment on this item to say "Wow, nice job" or "Eww that sucks!"

Now, further imagine that all files are hosted on your own equipment.

Now, further imagine that there are thousands of these servers, and they all speak to one another, and they never require you to sign up for anything in order to comment and create "video responses" and whatnot. Sounds good yet?

Obliquely alluding to the potential of this or any FOSS app to de-cathedralize a social media site by having p2p circles of association that is secure, private as one wants, self-maintained and owned and hopefully has a plug/module for dydns or like; only makes a wooshing sound below the din of /. aspies and critics.
Tho the point on naming is wisely taken. Goblins, daemons, zombies.... oh my....
