Telefonica To Shut Down VoIP Provider Jajah On January 31, 2014

An anonymous reader writes "Voice over IP (VoIP) provider Jajah has announced it will be shutting down on January 31, 2014. This means Jajah.com and Jajah Direct services will no longer be offered, and users will not be able to make any more calls. Existing Jajah users will be able to use their account normally until the kill date, but new registrations meanwhile are no longer being accepted. You can also apply for a refund of any balance remaining on your account prior to the service closing by submitting a request to customer support (processing time is 30 days)."

Slashdot redesign? (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572057)

Did anyone else see the redesigned slashdot, all modern and professional looking?

Or was it a hallucination?

Re:Slashdot redesign? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572071)

.. you mean like the one you see by visiting http://best.slashdot.org/ [slashdot.org] ?

o.o what black magic is this?

[___] - THE SYBIAN - [___] (-1)

Anyone tried it? Guys?

Re:[___] - THE SYBIAN - [___] (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572525)

Yeah, didn't do much even when I took my normal dose of amyls. The "normal dose" is enough to get me off through normal penetration/thrusting. The vibration was just too intense. I know some guys have gotten off like chicks, but I don't see how.

Not this Web 2.0 bullshit.

Obscure (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572115)

This item is about such an obscure issue that the primary thread of discussion refers to the Slashdot redesign.

Re: Obscure (2, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572145)

I think we're supposed to talk about the NSA.

I have a better topic.

Who is better: Picard or Shatner?

Kirk, forever, and for all generations.

I thought slashvertisements were supposed to be about companies that were growing, not companies that were closing down?

It's a psych out. I think the commenters are supposed to post alternatives that the customers can switch to. So it's a slashvertisement, but slightly more subtle.

Re:Huh? (2)

ColdWetDog (752185) | about a year ago | (#45572315)

No, I think it's more of a cop-out. Now, Slashdot doesn't even have to sort through the submissions to eek out a story. They just wander through some random RSS feed with perhaps some search terms (in this case the technical and ever interesting concept of VOIP), dump the blurb out and then let the rest of us figure out what's going on.

Old Thinking Kills New Ideas? (1)

ScottCooperDotNet (929575) | about a year ago | (#45572201)

Was this an old line, formerly state owned telephone company killing a service that competed with its main business, or just an unsuccessful acquisition being put down?

As an American, I had never heard of this particular service.

Re: Old Thinking Kills New Ideas? (3, Informative)

EdmundSS (264957) | about a year ago | (#45572219)

Presumably the latter -- they paid $200M for it in 2009. (Ouch.)

Re: Old Thinking Kills New Ideas? (2, Interesting)

AK Marc (707885) | about a year ago | (#45572303)

They bought it for $200M to prevent competition. Running it for a while then shutting it down could have been the master plan.

Re:Old Thinking Kills New Ideas? (1)

bugg_tb (581786) | about a year ago | (#45572589)

Or maybe they bought the company for the tech? O2 (a Telefonica subsiuary) just launched the TUGO app on android and ios that allows users to place calls and send texts from their phones over any WiFI connection, using their own phone number rather than an extra 'skype in' type of number. I live in the sticks and a service like that is very useful when you can't get a connection in your house....

Let that be a lesson to you. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572217)

Do not give your company a name or logo that appears to be Arab. That's setting yourself up for a guaranteed failure.

Re:Let that be a lesson to you. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45572533)

Perhaps you should have a lesson in Spanish History?

The Moors ruled a good part of Spain for a long time. The Alhambra Mosque in Granada is a wonderful place
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alhambra

SEAT, who are a Spanish car maker call their MPV, The Alhambra.

Using an arabic word in spain (especially in the south) is not as uncommon as you might think.

Re:Let that be a lesson to you. (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45573061)

Who gives a fuck? It wouldn't matter if the origin of the word is from some alien language on the edge of the Milky Way. If it sounds like something a Sand Nigger would say, don't use it.

Math isn't your strong suit isn't it... the shutdown date of January 31, 2014 is less than two months from now.

I don't care who you are, 2014-2013 is 1. As in one year.

Kids these days and their 'new math'.

Re:Damn (1)

Sun (104778) | about a year ago | (#45572631)

Nah, just caught me on a bad morning. I thought "two month", and then had the brain fart :-)

Yeah, I doubt I'll manage to use it in the time I have left. Better ask for that refund now.

I'm just pointing out that 12 hours ago the site was happy to collect money from me, with no mention of a deadline for using that money.

So you're saying they were accepting money right up until the moment they weren't accepting money. That is amazing.

Re:Damn (1)

jodido (1052890) | about a year ago | (#45575411)

Sadly, not amazing to me at all. Some years ago I bought a book of prepaid airline tickets the day before the company not only stopped accepting new customers but stopped completely (declared bankruptcy).

Re:Damn (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45591271)

It was sarcastic. How could what I wrote not always be true?

Re:Damn (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45573387)

I'm very lonely, so I can pm you my phone number, and you can call me and talk until you use it up.

What, exactly, are you wearing right now, sir?

MagDaddy (655082) | about a year ago | (#45577821)

This doesn't surprise me. I tried jajah and had trouble. I replaced them with rebtel.com and I'm glad I did.

Re:replaced with rebtel.com (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 months ago | (#45624003)

Should try Spaxtel (www.spaxtel.com) - better call quality than Jajah but works the same way. Rebtel requires an outgoing call.
