Weird Asteroid Itokawa Has a Dual Personality

Unknown Lamer posted about 6 months ago | from the spaceship-disguised-as-asteroid dept.

Space 61

astroengine writes "We care about how asteroids are made, in large part because if one were aiming to smash into us, we'd like to know what we can do about it. The structure of asteroids is also a matter of scientific curiosity, as it tells us a bit about the formation and evolution in our solar system. ... 25143 Itokawa is a relatively small near-Earth asteroid that was visited by the Japanese Habayusa spacecraft in 2005. It has also been monitored by Stephen Lowry of the University of Kent and his colleagues over a twelve year span with the 3.58 meter New Technology Telescope in La Silla, Chile. In that time span, Itokawa has made five near approaches to Earth. And what did they find? The asteroid is composed of two lobes of different densities, suggesting that Itokawa is in fact a merged binary." ESO is hosting a preprint of the paper.

Irony.

The irony is that this is the only comment that's relevant to the article, and it's at -1.

Re:Summary named the sattelite wrong... (2)

ThanatosMinor (1046978) | about 6 months ago | (#46164935)

It's relevant to the article (very un-/.) but the poster probably didn't notice the summary is a quote or read the article (very /.) or he/she/it would have known that Hayabusa is spelled wrong in the source material. It's the journalist's job to spell-check names, not editors here. Their job is to...umm...something something...whatever, I'm sure it's very important.

Re: Summary named the sattelite wrong... (0)

The editors are supposed to (sic) quoted spelling errors.

If I was the guy who posted this on slashdot, then I failed my due-diligence by applying the [SIC] marker next to Habayusa. Slashdot has gone down hill since Tim left...

From ask.com, a bit of culture...

"The Japanese name 'Hayabusa' means a peregrine falcon; a bird that often serves as a metaphor for speed due to its vertical hunting dive. The name was made popular by Japanese professional wrestler Hayabusa, also known as The Masked Falcon."

A bit off-topic, there's also a family of very good offensive table tennis blades from the Xiom brand (http://www.xiomtt.com/) with that name :-) I'm a player and aficionado of TT, so forgive me this hiatus.

Re:Summary named the sattelite wrong... (1)

cusco (717999) | about 6 months ago | (#46168629)

How does a table tennis blade get offensive? Does it have a brace to hold your middle finger erect during play, or are offensive images printed on the face? Inquiring minds want to know . . .

Re:Summary named the sattelite wrong... (1)

jasax (1728312) | about 5 months ago | (#46191185)

Its the type of wood (or of several types of carbon, glass fiber, titanium, etc...) layers used in its assembly that dictate the offensiveness of the blade (in a defensive-offensive scale). The gluing, the thickness and the relative placement of the layers also are important in defining the type of the blade, and in conjunction with the type of the rubbers they set the type of the complete TT racket. There are several thousands of commercial blades and rubbers, so the choice is enormous ;-)

Usually its the top layers in both sides that count more to the offensive-defensive grade. Blades are usually symmetrical (both sides are equal) but there are some models prepared for defense in one side and for attack in the other. The offensive blades have usually harder outer layers that cause a faster rebound of the ball when compared with defensive types.

More details about common types of wood in TT blades are found, for example, in http://www.tabletennisdb.com/b... [tabletennisdb.com]

Too many other news sites regurgitate the exact same storys i see here. And all of them don't look as shitty as the beta slashdot.

Stop being stupid.

But the beta is a huge discussion functionality downgrade. Might as well read comments on Ars Technica to get that masochist interface kick...

I had never seen the Beta site, so I was curious what all the fuss was about; it couldn't be that bad! I clicked the beta link, and now I can't get OUT! There's no un-beta link, and I'm auto-redirected back to beta every time. What the actual fuck.

You're being far too kind. The auteur of the beta Slashdot design should be torn into itty-bitty pieces and buried alive. Count me in as another long-time slashdot reader who will be adding the site to Leechblock as soon as I can no longer access class Slashdot. And given the trend topics that have been making it to the top of the pile lately (with this one as a nice exception) I'm kind of wondering why I'm waiting...

It's not just this site which decided that usefulness should be jammed down the sewer in favor of shiny, take a look at NBC's redesigned site. It looks and acts like Windows 8!

Once again, Rule #3 that should never be broken:

Never let a web designer design your web site.

Re: NO (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46164625)

I'm right there with you.

I have 20 or so news sites I visit regularly. I went to NBC and it took about 10 seconds to decide to remove it from my favorites. What the hell were they thinking??

I hope Slashdot doesn't make it a repeat, but it's looking that way.

Re:Maybe (2, Insightful)

MightyMartian (840721) | about 6 months ago | (#46164593)

But from what I can tell of the little message that came up, at some point they intend to shut down the classic site. That's why I sent them an email telling them I'm gone once they do that.

Re:Maybe (1)

Antipater (2053064) | about 6 months ago | (#46164773)

Oh, thank god, I'm out. And thank you for the link - it most definitely was not there in the footer on my screen. Then again, I had no sidebar on it either (the tutorial/tips that popped up were pointing at a nonexistent sidebar), so it was probably just broken more than normal.

Re: NO (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46164581)

i had been forced to move to the beta early on, when the "return to classic" button still existed. i instantly clicked it. unfortunately, they removed the option when they forced my mobile to the beta site, so now i'm unable to even read the site on the go. this place was one of the few things i kept bookmarked on my mobile, but not anymore.

Classic slashdot (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46164985)

From the FAQ:

I want to stick with the Classic site (slashdot.org) for now. How do I go back?

If you'd rather view the Classic site for now, click on the “Slashdot Classic” link in the footer of the Beta site (beta.slashdot.org). Likewise, if you are on the Classic site and want to switch to Beta, click on the "Slashdot Beta" link in the footer of the Classic site. Both choices are persistent, and require you have cookies enabled.

Re: NO (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46169221)

The cookies are the key. Clean them and you will see back the good old interface.

re: NO (1)

RaceProUK (1137575) | about 6 months ago | (#46172475)

There's no un-beta link

I must be imagining the big 'Slashdot Classic' link at the bottom of every page then.

Re: NO (1)

Antipater (2053064) | about 6 months ago | (#46173883)

It wasn't there for me. As I said in other posts, I apparently got an even worse version than usual - there was no sidebar or footer, so no Slashdot Classic link. All I could see was the header and the stories.

Re:NO! (0)

harvestsun (2948641) | about 6 months ago | (#46164455)

It was designed by someone with a massive whitespace fetish who has clearly never actually used the site.

I will leave the site in a heartbeat if this is forced on people, it's just plain unusable.

Hmmmm .... so we're going to leverage our synergies in order to more effectively attract women and minorities to the sausage fest of bickering, spite, and lousy editing which is Slashdot.

We feel that presenting these things in a new and hideous form will facilitate an environment in which all can feel welcome to be abused by random strangers on the internet.

We only predict a small decline in established users who have gouged out their eyes in response to the sheer level of fugly we have introduced as a result of this new design, and we hope that users will not notice the stunning loss in both functionality and readability caused by these changes as they will be more pre-occupied with their newly aching eyeballs.

Re:beta (1)

RDW (41497) | about 6 months ago | (#46165057)

No, don't JUST post rants here. But post them here as well. Then perhaps somebody with a financial interest in this site who would otherwise see only pre-filtered comments from whoever is in charge of this Windows-8 style fiasco ("we've had some very positive feedback from seven of the target demographics listed in Happy Table 5") will happen to come across what most people on here actually think. Which is that Beta sucks.

For everyone complaining about the beta format. They put a link right up on top of the pages now. Don't just post rants here (personally I doubt anyone in charge reads the comments here) send them emails telling them how much of an abomination it is.

No one is willing to do that any more because it is quite clear that they do not read the emails. By all appearances, by sending an email you are sending your comments to /dev/null. As a side affect, no one else (read: the general Slashdot user base) will know that you also do not approve of the beta abomination. Emails to a dead mailbox, uncounted or analyzed for content, can easily be dismissed as a vocal minority.

In contrast, posting comments in the stories is a very public statement that everyone sees, everyone knows about, and can not be denied later when it is a complete failure. And the "editors" (I use that term very lightly) most definately do read the story comments... they themselves frequently comment on stories.

Over and over again for the last several months you will see long comment strings speaking very explicitly to the problems with the beta redesign, including:
  - Massive waste of screen space. Do Slashdot readers really need to see "Latest Tech Jobs" and "Top SourceForge Downloads" taking up 1/3+ of every screen? What about the massive whitespacce this leaves down in the comment sections.... you know, the portion people actually look at? What is next in the beta, to fill these areas with massive flashing/dancing graphics 'ala a Japanese bulletin board site?
  - Useless graphics that contribute nothing to content or understanding articles. Huge pictures, often taking more screen space than the story summary itself.
  - Complete disruption of comment readability and flow. With the existing format one can easily scan 15-30 comments in a single pageframe and scroll for more. The new format lets you see 3-5 at most in the page frame and you continually have to click "Load More" to see additional comments... a format that completely breaks page refresh and following a link off-page and then back.

And the many, many other insightful analysis of the existing beta problems brought up by other regular readers for months. To date, as far as I can tell, Slashdot has failed to address any of these issue, give any response to complaints, or given any accounting of acceptance rates, email/click-thru/or otherwise. Slashdot has repeatedly posted blurbs about how great the new website is, and how everyone likes it. The comments in existing stories show quite the opposite. We have all seen website crash and die, and regular readers all see Slashdot pulling a Digg death-dive with this new beta.

Can inanimate objects have a personality? (2, Insightful)

Joke's on all the complainers! (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46164931)

I have no issues with Slashdot Beta's new design. It looks okay to me, and I have not encountered anything missing or broken. Performance is still the same as before. Aside from some cosmetic changes, I see no difference from the old version, except that maybe this newer one is a bit more pleasant to read with the whitespace added. (Yes, having a mountain of clustered, tiny text hurts readability IMO, but I'm not going to complain about that either for a site I can view for free.)

Slashdot is so full of whiny, self-centered people who fear the slightest change or difference, no matter how imperceptible, that it's unreal. Yes, if you hate the new site, then please leave. We should be here for the content, not a design custom-tailored to your individual fixations. If you need to share your traumatic experience with encountering a modern website for the first time, then you need to get a life (and perhaps a new computer, for those of you complaining about performance...seriously? I could care less about a couple seconds or kilobytes more).

What they are hiding from us is the fact that the less demse end of the asteroid has been extensively mined, sub-surface, by space gnomes. This is, in reality, what accounts for the differing densities. Why are the gnomes mining only one end... think Cyprus but with a competing mining company.

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46170431)

Sometimes it's the usable non-intrusive site I've known and loved for 15 years, other times it's this horrible whitespace + video atrocity that is way less pleasant to visit - and the idiotic bosses seem to think that it will be a massive improvement when it's actually shit, and everyone's telling them it's shit. All that money you wasted on the redesign isn't going to make it suck less at any point in the future, so write it off and throw this beta garbage in the trash where it belongs. Sooner rather than later.

Try and calculate how much ad revenue you got from people reading and posting about how much the awful Windows 8 interface sucked dudes, because that's a fair representation of the minimum damage that's going to happen to your own revenues if you ignore all this feedback.

No, not really. I mean, gosh, who cares.

Here's an alternate "theory" . The asteroid isn't made up of two merged blobs: it's going all cellular division on us and is in the process of asexual reproduction. This takes a long time, what with rock being somewhat stiffer than amoebas and all.
