Sinkhole Swallows 8 Vehicles Inside Bowling Green KY Corvette Museum

samzenpus posted about 6 months ago | from the mole-man's-new-ride dept.

Transportation 97

OakDragon writes "A sinkhole about 40 feet wide — and 30 feet deep — opened up inside the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY early Thursday morning, swallowing eight vehicles that were sitting inside. At least one of these cars is one of a kind, and due to its location the fire department allowed its removal. The sinkhole is remarkable in that it has left the surrounding ground which supports the circular structure intact, although that assessment may change up on investigation. Security footage from inside the museum shows the collapse as it happened."

Somewhere a distant echo in my brain is a proverb about Vettes saying something about a deep hole that you throw money into.
Seems like prophesy instead of proverb at this point.

Hmm...I somehow expected the first post to mention something akin slashdot being swallowed up by a sinkhole called beta. ACs don't quite troll like they used to.

Sure, but you see.. (2)

Anubis350 (772791) | about 5 months ago | (#46237525)

The beta sinkhole swallowed 8 ACs first, however one was a rare GNAA troll and due to it's recent scarcity slashdot is allowing their removal. The sinkhole is remarkable in that it has left the surrounding stories intact while decimating comments, although that assessment may change according to Soulskill

Re:I heard they knew about the sinkhole (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46236601)

Insurance payoff?

Insurance works great for things that are replaceable. I seriously doubt they intentionally left these cars in danger for insurance purposes, they would have not just been risking the cars but peoples lives probably their own. Never mind they will never recoup the potential value of them after they repair them with unoriginal parts.

I'm more inclined to believe stupidity prevailed here, starting with terrible construction and ending with putting to much load on the floor and an inspection or two probably couldn't have hurt. I have a hard time believing something that size just appeared overnight, your going to see cracks and other hints well in advanced.

noh8rz10 (2716597) | about 6 months ago | (#46236091)

the sinkhole was likely an attempted theft using underground tunnels to bore directly into the car museum. the coolest part is that the tunnel made itself using the sinkhole-ray and the cars fell into the hole and they just drove them off!

I'm not sure I understand. About a dozen other non-racing cars have done it faster. Is this ZR1 celebrated because it was the fastest lap time in a Corvette?

Re:Tragic - Good thing the 7:19 ZR1 survived (4, Informative)

KingMotley (944240) | about 5 months ago | (#46238795)

When it was done, it was the fastest time ever recorded, by any car. Since then, it has been broken many times, but never by a car close to its price.

" UPDATED 7:15 PM -- "This is a big one. For the last 22 years I've been involved in the repair and the rehabilitation of sinkholes." -- Rehabilitation? What does he train them to enable them to have more opportunity? So when they do have to face life on the outside they can maybe become a Pot Hole, or better yet, a swimming hole, and having a positive impact to society. If this program had better funding, I'm sure repeat offenders like this would not have to resort to the old ways.

At least no people got hurt, unlike that poor guy who had a sinkhole open up under his bedroom and died.

But you'd have thought if the original builders knew about sinkholes they've have either build a very thick concrete base slab and/or plenty of deep piles. Looking at that mess they did neither.

Compared to what? Your 1989 Civic with the fart pipe?

You don't keep a marque going for 61 years by cranking out tired junk. Look at its competition, which is all priced far higher (including the Dodge/SRT Viper), yet the Corvette still manages to beat them in value and most performance metrics.

I don't see how the depth of the hole matters at all. The width, however, matters a great deal.

Anonymous Coward | about 6 months ago | (#46236969)

One of the things you can count on slashdot for is a bunch of posts by sanctimonious twats pretending to know more than someone else. Yes there are caves under the museum, they cover a vast region of this part of the country. What you do not know is that across the highway they are building a speedway and moving tons of earth around. It is not the original builders lack of slabs and piles to blame (Although I got a laugh out of people suggesting that was the failure here), nor is it a lack of geologic awareness. Stop pretending to know what the fuck you are talking about.

They gleefully create sinkholes by intentionally draining wetlands. It's awesome to see them for once hurt themselves with their actions instead of leaving families with children without water. Those people are sick with their worship of cars, and this car, in case you don't know about it, is the epitome of white trash in the USA.
