If you write in Turkish is it more like 70 characters after Unicode conversion or does everyone get 140 characters?

Re:What a fool. (1)

Everyone gets 140 NCF normalized UTF-8 Unicode code points. Characters, iow.

Turkish uses the Latin alphabet, so even in UTF-8 it's mostly single-byte (the letters with diacritics and dotless I are two-byte).

Re:What a fool. (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 months ago | (#46550637)

the letters with diacritics and dotless I are two-byte

Actually, half of the Turkish letters with diacritics (öüç) are also in ISO-8859-1, which means that they have a 1-byte UTF-8 representation. There are only a few special characacters (variants of i, g, and s, which I cannot post here).

True.

which means that they have a 1-byte UTF-8 representation

Not true. Most of those letters have codepoints between U+0080 and U+00FF, and UTF-8 is only single-byte for codepoints below U+0080 [wikipedia.org] (i.e. ASCII).

70. From the wiki...
"...whose payload length is limited by the constraints of the signaling protocol to precisely 140 octets (140 octets * 8 bits / octet = 1120 bits). Short messages can be encoded using a variety of alphabets: the default GSM 7-bit alphabet, the 8-bit data alphabet, and the 16-bit UCS-2 alphabet.[40] Depending on which alphabet the subscriber has configured in the handset, this leads to the maximum individual short message sizes of 160 7-bit characters, 140 8-bit characters, or 70 16-bit characters. GSM 7-bit alphabet support is mandatory for GSM handsets and network elements,[40] but characters in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or Cyrillic alphabet languages (e.g., Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc.) must be encoded using the 16-bit UCS-2 character encoding (see Unicode)."

You're being overly optimistic. (Or naive. Or an apologist for Turkey.)

Over the past decade Turkey has seen a steady revival of Islam in their political sphere. And remember, constitutions are open to "interpretation".

As long as they remain friendly to the West (availability of land in the south & east for US / UK military bases, guaranteed supply of gas from pipelines that cross their territory) there's no one to stop them.

Oh well, hopefully we don't see a complete drop in Internet communications for the whole country, like we did in '11-'12. This is because lots of people have computers, USB drives are cheap, everyone can read and write text or html, and swapping usb drives on the street is easy and anonymous where the internet is very expensive and watched very closely

In Turkish, there is a saying:

In Turkish, "Eceli gelen it, cami duvarina iser." which can roughly be translated as, "The dog, whose time to die come, goes and pees on the wall of the mosque (desecrates the holy grounds, punishable by death in sharia law or something like that).

Mullah tayyip is dropping plunkers in the middle of the prayer hall. But, don;t get your hopes too high, He will defect to US when he no longer is able to suppress all the people in Turkiye, as I feel, an uprising is coming very soon. I believe, him and his children, own property somewhere on the Northeastern part of United States.

Still, I have to say, good luck with your censorship. It doesn't work and will only bring more publicity. People in China have been doing this for years.

Not going to work when you can use third-party DNS servers like OpenDNS and Google Public DNS. :-)

Local hosts files = faster (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 months ago | (#46552717)

+ more reliable vs. DNS' faults (Kaminsky flaw redirection).

NOW - If OpenDNS &/or Google DNS use the latest patches to bind (which 99% of ISP's out there DO NOT HAVE IN PLACE mind you, 5-7++ yrs. after it was out there no less (due to complexity with MX exchange setups iirc))?

Then, they're better off than default DNS servers from ISP's @ least!

(Yes, I use OpenDNS as a fallback IF I miss a lookup in local hosts cached in RAM by the local kernelmode diskcaching subsystem, & with my favs. @ the TOP of the file too since I turn off the faulty with large hosts files Windows' local dns clientside usermode slow cache service - that makes up for indexing I lost using the faulty with large hosts files DNS clientside usermode SLOW cache service... saving RAM, CPU cycles, & other forms of I/O + complexity it introduces, using it for other tasks instead, efficiently)...

APK

P.S.=> Nice part is (since 24 of my favs. equates to roughly 2-3++ million hosts entries speed equivalence to indexed sorted ones by dns clients, do the math, binary search patterns, or hash)? The MAJORITY of my hosts file = block entries vs. adbanners &/or KNOWN botnet servers + malware serving sites or maliciously scripted ones - I miss a lookup? It's ALL MEMORY BOUND speed (negligible 'speed hit" & blocking banners + doing it locally for resolutions of my fav. sites I spend 99% of my time @ online mind you)?

Hey - I get LOCAL speed, + reliablity, guaranteed, vs. those faults (plus I use LESS MOVING PARTS, period)... apk

Addendum (DNSSEC on OpenDNS iirc) (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 7 months ago | (#46552765)

What I stated about them using bind patches vs. redirect needs to note my subject-line above (iirc, they have THAT in place on THEIR DNS @ least, iirc, too).

The ROOT 13 DNS servers ALSO have DNSSEC in place iirc - & for recursion (which even GOOGLE or OpenDNS has to do)? Again - if DNSSEC + latest bind patches (vs. the Kaminsky redirect flaw in DNS) will help them IF Google &/or OpenDNS point to the root 13 for resolutions during recursion.

It's WHY I supplement hosts with them in fact...

* HOWEVER - I spend 99% of my time here on /. largely (some in around 5-7 other spots online) - so, I rarely USE other sites... nicest part about "news aggregator sites" imo, is that, along with the fact READERS & REPLIERS give you the "real deal", often BETTER than the source article many times!

(It's WHY I come here, along with the fact news aggregators dovetail PERFECTLY into my usage of hosts too...)

APK

P.S.=> Again - IF I miss a lookup (rare since I spend time on only a limited # of sites online, roughly 24 or so)? No biggie... my hosts is a MEMORY-BOUND (fast) lookup, & IF I MISS?? I hit OpenDNS after (very, VERY rare for me)... apk

DNS blacklisting still? (0)

You can mostly get around 'Turkish Censorship' (and Italian censorship too for that matter) by changing your DNS to something like 8.8.8.8 - they blacklist DNS entries and that's pretty much it. Granted I moved six months ago and they may have a Great Firewall of Turkey now but I doubt it.

Turkey's corruption extends to the US (0)

nickmalthus (972450) | about 8 months ago | (#46547107)

Turkey is good at exporting corruption. Sibel Edmonds [theamerica...vative.com] spilled the dirt on their efforts to bribe US congressmen like Dennis Hastert to deny genocide status to Armenians [wikipedia.org] and help Turkey become a nuclear state [turkishweekly.net]

Re:Turkey's corruption extends to the US (1)

sudo (194998) | about 8 months ago | (#46547737)

That's just politics. Most politicians do it ... smarter ones usually don't get caught and the more affluent the country the more sophisticated the corruption.

The U.S. Barely makes the top 20 in the Transparency International rankings list (http://www.transparency.org/cpi2013/results).
Turkey is 50th

Hmm (2)

It is just a DNS block: Change your DNS to 8.8.8.8 (5, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | about 8 months ago | (#46547309)

It is just a simple stupid DNS block.
Change to your DNS servers to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220, 208.67.222.220 or 208.67.220.222) and everything is back to normal.

People are painting 8.8.8.8 over Erdogans election posters all over Turkey :-)

Classic case of the Streisand effect !
