German Pranksters Spoof Google Nest At Tech Conference

Soulskill posted about 5 months ago | from the not-enough-skydiving-for-a-real-google-demo dept.

Google 45

phmadore writes: "Some clever German pranksters managed to put one over on a sect of the intelligentsia just the other day. In this 30-minute presentation (video) at the re:publica 2014 tech conference, activists going under the pseudonyms of Paul von Ribbeck and Gloria Spindle presented four new (and moderately credible) Google products making up the 'Google Nest': Google Trust, Google Hug, Google Bee, and Google Bye. 'We can't really guarantee that we protect your information, but we can do our very best to protect you,' says Spindle about eight minutes in. Google is reportedly rather upset about the whole affair. The conference organizers were in on the joke — the audience were clued in afterward and asked to participate in order to fool the media. For me, the discussion-worthy items here are: data insurance and the value of data."

One of the many flavors for the Google Sno-Cone.

Listen to me because I'm a liar (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968529)

If people won't pay attention to your message unless you commit fraud, they aren't likely to start caring after you hoax them. Well, someone will care that you're a liar probably, and someone else will care that you stole their identity, credentials and good name to perpetrate your hoax, but that's about it.

Re:Listen to me because I'm a liar (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968567)

That's being too harsh calling them liars like that. Google generally tries to do the right thing. Accusing them of fraud is going to far. Yes, they've made some stupid decisions, but they seem to be more dumb than evil.

Seems their plan has worked...

Wait, I thought AC was calling the pranksters liars, not Google.

You forgot: and some people (the majority) will laugh, and nod as it is so true to the mark.

Why didn't Gloria (the lesbian on scene) wear a bra ?

Why? She had no tits...

Why didn't Gloria (the lesbian on scene) wear a bra ?

Actually, I found both Paul and Gloria hot. If given the choice of only being able to do it with one of them, I would have a hard time trying to decide which one I would do it with.

Some people like to watch instead of participate; you must be a teacher.

Has Google offered proof it wasn’t real? (2)

Are we sure it was a spoof? It sounds a lot like Google. Maybe they’re trying to distance themselves from their horrible ideas.

You can't mod a post and then offer an explanation for your action, because that will invalidate your action. Well, you could post as an AC...

Perfect English (0, Redundant)

mtrachtenberg (67780) | about 5 months ago | (#46968563)

German pranksters? They've mastered the Orwellian English of advertising to people who think they're smart. Bravo and brava!

Re:Perfect English (1)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968729)

Yeah, Germans have historically been far too straightforward for propaganda, and the decade in which Orwell wrote that book provided no inspiration whatever.

Anyway, I'm spectacularly happy to see Google parodied in this way. It's about time the fawning stopped and serious people started taking them for what they are.

Re:Perfect English (1)

umafuckit (2980809) | about 5 months ago | (#46968823)

Yeah, Germans have historically been far too straightforward for propaganda,

That's true. It's why this guy's [wikipedia.org] propaganda had such a hard time sticking. Think what could have happened if the German people had fallen for that shit.

Re:Perfect English (3, Funny)

Dahamma (304068) | about 5 months ago | (#46969465)

It was very German humor, really. Come up with four jokes and then spend the next 30 minutes explaining why they are funny.

Google Lawsuit (0)

Charliemopps (1157495) | about 5 months ago | (#46968579)

Google Lawsuit - Think Google is powerful and evil but wondering just how terrible our wrath really is? Did you wake up this morning thinking that despite what little you make as a full time activist, you'd like to know what effect losing a lawsuit whos damages will read "more money than God" at the end? Introducing Google Lawsuit. If you thought Google had a lot of programmers, just wait until you see our legal department. And if you're thinking "Well, at least I still have my family" think again, we'll pay them not to talk to you anymore and hire a lobbyist to convince your grandmother you really are a jerk.

Re:Google Lawsuit (2)

Elfich47 (703900) | about 5 months ago | (#46969253)

I agree. I expect to see a news item in the next six months that reads "German activitst company goes out of business after prank goes wrong" after Google's legal team sues the company into insolvency.
And if that doesn't work, don't expect to be able to have any useful google results on that company for a long long time.

Re:Google Lawsuit (1)

AlterEager (1803124) | about 5 months ago | (#46971109)

Well, no. The whole "google is upset" thing is part of the joke.

Or, to put it in a way slashdot readers can understand:

Woosh!

[ insert slashdot editor in car-crash analogy here ]

Re:Google Lawsuit (1)

Elfich47 (703900) | about 5 months ago | (#46969291)

I also expect that re:publica 14 will be the last re:publica conference for a while. It is painfully obvious that the organizers did not check with their legal council when they approved this little stunt. I won't be surprised when Google:Legal shows up at the organizers door and slaps them stupid with a lawsuit.

wait, what? (5, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968603)

You can't write Google is upset and then use as a source for that assertion an interview with the pranksters (who are still in character) themselves.

Re:wait, what? (0)

True. But "Google Unimpressed With Prank" does not generate cilcks and associated ad revenue.RE

If there is a vetted source you would have preferred to have been posted, if I were you I would have just done that in my comment instead of posting about the absence of said vetted source.

Re:wait, what? (1)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46971027)

Sigh... the problem isn't that you didn't post a "vetted" source. There is actually NO vetted source because the only people who are saying that Google is upset are the activists themselves, who are only pretending to be Google employees and talking about things that they made up themselves.

How did you write a post about pranksters giving a fake presentation about fake products, but then don't realize that they are fake employees who are fake resigning based on fake conversations with fake colleagues?

I can't decide if phmadore was pranked by the second fake interview himself, or if he is trying to prank Slashdot.

WTF is wrong with you? When it's pointed out your sources are unreliable you resort to a false dichotomy?

Re:wait, what? (0)

I don't know if the Email posted here [netzpolitik.org] (just the screenshot [netzpolitik.org] ) is also a fake. It seems to be legit.

And here [peng-collective.net] the guys ask for money and for people to mirror the google-nest website.

Wait, what? (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968915)

They couldn't fool the conference organizers, so they explained how it was clever satirical social commentary.
They couldn't fool the audience, so they explained how it was clever satirical social commentary.
The media didn't buy it either, so they explained how it was clever satirical social commentary

Is it me, or are the only people those "pranksters" managed to "put one over" themselves?

Re:Wait, what? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46968987)

Actually, they did fool the audience but then later clued them in so they could become participants in perpetrating the hoax to social media.

Re:Wait, what? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46969607)

Oh, it's quite likely a few people fell for it. Meanwhile, others were starting to discuss if this was a practical joke by google or someone else at about 10 minutes in, other audience members simply started to walk out. Was quite distracting, actually. It's not all that obvious in the video thanks to how it was framed and miked, but some of it is audible/visible and as for people walking out... watch the number of empty chairs in the audience shots over time.

But a 'sect'?

LOL, sorry. Had been up quite awhile working on my first Python programming stuff. I was pretty delirious. I can't remember where the hell I even heard about this prank. Oh it was on tumblr.

Google is upset as their plans have been unveiled. (1)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46971499)

This hoax is too close to what Google are planning to do and they don't like the press finding out in advance of the products they are going to launch.

Google Hug (1)

So many of the commentors seem upset. I think someone needs a google hug!

Obvious troll is obvious (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 months ago | (#46983821)

There's a number of red flags that pop up for me in their talk. The first is about 3 min in when they mention Larry Page sending "Gloria" to work with "Paul."
then somewhere close to 6 min when she says "But that doesn't work because we need your data." Then the non-password login @ ~10 min. (planted users for hug demo). etc. etc. etc.

Like the title says, "obvious troll is obvious." And "Gloria's" demeanor totally weirds me out (like a fake TED meets Apple presenter).
