Cybercriminals Ramp Up Activity Ahead of 2014 World Cup

samzenpus posted about a month and a half ago | from the crime-wave dept.

Crime 90

wiredmikey (1824622) writes With the FIFA World Cup 2014 kicking off this week in Brazil, cybercriminals and scammers are working hard to take advantage of visitors to the World Cup in Brazil and those following the world soccer tournament online. In recent months, several security vendors have published advisories about the various scams, phishing and malware operations that target Internet users interested in the World Cup. While individuals from all over the world have been targeted, many of the malicious campaigns focus on Brazil and neighboring South American countries. While news that cybercriminals are zoning in on a large global event is no surprise, the scale and tactics being used is quite wide in scope, ranging from malware distribution and phishing scams, to fraudulent ticket sales, spam and other promising yet fraudulent schemes. For those visiting Brazil to watch the games in person, the cyber threats also include rogue wireless access points, ATMs rigged with card skimmers and Point-of-Sale malware.

People will exploit any opportunity to make a quick buck out of customers anywhere. This goes to show that you must be very careful when using electronic payment and ATMS anywhere. Better security will help too.

it's okay, stupidity is supposed to be painful. this is the natural order of things. unlike a mugger who uses a knife or gun, scammers can only target the idiot sheeple. the ones who can use a technology for years and know nothing more about it than the day they first started. the permanent noobs. the dipshits who actively resist each and every opportunity to learn and understand. the ones you might feel sorry for, until you realize they are the majority and through sheer force of numbers have drowned out the votes, opinions, and purchasing decisions of the rest and created the world you and I are forced to deal with. these are the people advertising and PR works on. these are the people who believe government and while they're at it, believe just about anything that comes out of the TV. the rest of us also have to get what they deserve.

fuck 'em. i take a few basic steps to secure my shit, too-bad-so-sad the autopilot zombie sheeple can't be bothered to do the same. it'll be just one more important thing with real consequences they can't be bothered to learn the most basic facts about. this time some massive bureaucracy (that should have been created in the first place and will never be dissolved) can't do much to protect them, not till after the fact.

if they weren't such self-serving pricks, scammers would be heroes. whatever their motives though they are performing a valuable service that is increasingly difficult to find.

How to protect yourself EASILY vs. this? (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47219805)

Custom hosts files - my sources from the security community are on this like "white on rice" vs. the sites & servers they will be using, blocking them out!

APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:

http://start64.com/index.php?o... [start64.com]

(Details of hosts' benefits enumerated in link)

Summary:

---

A. ) Hosts do more than AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default) + Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse", or Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org]

B. ) Hosts add reliability vs. downed or redirected DNS + secure vs. known malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... [slashdot.org] w/ less added "moving parts" complexity + room 4 breakdown,

C. ) Hosts files yield more speed (blocks ads & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote DNS), security (vs. malicious domains serving mal-content + block spam/phish & trackers), reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable DNS, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ ISP level + weak vs FastFlux + DynDNS botnets), & anonymity (vs. dns request logs + DNSBL's).

---

* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ a faster level (ring 0) vs redundant browser addons (slowing up slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ OS, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).

** Addons are more complex + slowup browsers & in message passing (use a few concurrently - you'll see)

*** Addons slowdown SLOWER usermode browsers layering on MORE - & bloating memory consumption too + hugely excessive CPU usage (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... [mozilla.org] )

SO - Instead, I work w/ what you have in kernelmode, via hosts (A tightly integrated PART of the IP stack itself)

Whatever it is you've been partaking of, maybe you're enjoying it, but you should cut the dose buddy. And no f***ing way would any sane person click that 1st link you posted. Seriously, you can't whitelist the internet; that's just crazy talk.

What are you talking about? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47219971)

I don't "whitelist the net": Explain yourself there since *IF* anything, I blacklist known bad sites/servers that botnets & other threats use effectively "nullifying" them + their payloads (since they can't even talk back to mama IF you have one, & if you can't touch them & theirs in the 1st place, they cannot hurt you...).

As far as "whitelisting"?

I put 24 favorite sites @ the top of my hosts file (it's large, & Windows has a flaw in its slower usermode clientside DNS cache)

I disable it since it has issues with large hosts due to a fixed-size datastructure it loads & indexes which I have notified MS of YEARS ago & am totally correct on - they did nothing,

INSTEAD, I opt to use a combination of 2 FASTER kernelmode services in the diskcaching subsystem + tcp/ip stack itself - & yes, it works, also (saving the wasted CPU cycles, RAM, + other forms of I/O it used... BONUS!).

That "hardcoding" of my favorites equates to ~ 2-3 million indexed seeks laying it out in hosts as I do @ the top of the file, which goes unaltered into RAM for the fastest possible performance... & that too, works!.

* Get the picture now?

APK

P.S.=> I suspect you're a troll *trying* to "confuse the issue" (or you can't read), & that you're 1 of 5 types:

1.) Advertisers
2.) malware makers
3.) botnet herders
4.) webmasters
5.) An INFERIOR competitor (e.g. - AdBlock, Ghostery, & RequestPolicy)

* Doesn't 'take a brain' to realize THAT much - after all: THEY'RE THE ONES WHO GET "HURT" by it... problem is THEY have been hurting others bandwidth/speed, security, & more for DECADES... apk

P.S.=> "The premise is, quite simple: Take something designed by nature & reprogram it to make it work FOR the body, rather than against it..." - Dr. Alice Krippen "I AM LEGEND"

Didn't that end up turning nearly everyone in the world into murderous, light-shunning monsters in the movie?

It cured cancer... apk (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47219997)

I'm just curing ANOTHER KIND (several actually) online in threats like this one & MANY more - threats to your security, speed, reliability, + even adding a degree of anonymity online.

* :)

(I merely give folks what they want & need - that's all, & I do it FAR more efficiently, with less + less moving parts complexity & room for breakdown along with HUGELY better efficiency... also shoring up security faults in DNS itself - bonus!)

Malvertising (per CISCO) is out of control, AntiVirus products (per Symantec) are only 55% effective... no folks: THIS? This IS the "wave of the future" of added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity (to an extent) online, since it works better by far (prevention IS the best medicine, not reactive removal & detection - this? Is PROACTIVE vs. antivirus... stops it BEFORE you can get it, & even IF you do? Botnets can't "talk back to mama" for orders... think of it like how Iron Man took out the central server in "The Avengers", you'll get the point of my analogy on that...)

APK

P.S.=> It works, & hugely successfully - 100's here have converted over to hosts file use (which I have documented) & it has been downloaded SO MUCH & SO FAST, that my hoster (MalwareBytes' hpHosts, a highly respected member of the security community) had to move to AMAZON (Un-DDoS'able) due to the demand for downloads AND data imports... all for free, from "yours truly" & yes - it works for giving users more speed, security, reliability + anonymity online BETTER & MORE EFFICIENTLY than browser addon competition by far - no single addon does more for you on the accounts noted above - fact!

(Now, *IF* you have trouble comprehending the analogy here I use @ the termination of my "std. post" regarding my program? I suggest you ask a user here (pretty popular & well-known who has a PC repair shop with many customers as his testbed) named "Hairyfeet", a peer of yours on /. - he turned from DNS servers (wasteful of power, vulnerable to redirect problems in security etc. which HOSTS fix no less on clientside systems) to AdBlock - he sees a SIMILAR effect but... he won't even argue on this (& that guy LOVES to argue (sorry Hairy, lol)) but, it's true... I just do it BETTER than AdBlock & even FIX DNS...).

He knows it.

We discussed this by email & had HUGE 'battles' here on /. regarding DNS vs. HOSTS (less complexity & electricity usage, RAM usage, CPU usage, etc.-et al) - funny he switched though!

AdBlock OR other browser addons? Far more complex & INEFFICIENT AS HELL (see my original post, documented evidence exists of that much).

In fact? You can confront Wladimir Palant of AdBlock on this (I did, after HE emailed me 1st stating "hosts are a shitty solution"... well, ok then):

So, thus, I confonted him in email reply to show me that "Almost ALL ADS BLOCKED" can do MORE than custom hosts?

Result??

He refused to reply, & RAN like a scared rabbit!

ESPECIALLY after this article study showed how massively INEFFICIENT in RAM (5gb usage) & HIGH CPU USAGE AdBlock is https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... [mozilla.org]

I am additionally QUITE willing to forward that email exchange to ANYONE who is curious... as it is my fav. tool to utilize vs. CLEARLY INFERIOR competition in abilities + efficiency... facts, rule!

APK

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47220211)

You're a troll, and I suspect you are 1 of 5 types out there fighting & nigh constantly harassing me here on /. for YEARS now on this site:

1.) Advertisers
2.) malware makers
3.) botnet herders
4.) webmasters (I held the app back for them in fact, it was done, in 3 parts though in tty mode, as far back as 2003 here but when malvertizing went out of control, out the door she went to 'the masses' for the absolute good, since any idiot knows being destructive = easy, but doing good NEVER is, but it's worth it imo)
5.) An INFERIOR competitor (e.g. - AdBlock, Ghostery, & RequestPolicy)

* Doesn't 'take a brain' to realize THAT much - after all: THEY'RE THE ONES WHO GET "HURT" by it... problem is, per my other post to you? THEY have been hurting others bandwidth/speed, security, & more for DECADES...

HOWEVER: Even the likes of THEM in that list can benefit via my work here... it is, the embodiment of "the absolute good" for all, & it's something I strove for in designing it + creating it. ANYONE can benefit from it. Even them.

Funniest part is that those technically unjustifiable downmods they almost always level on my posts on hosts (they're coming on these too, I nearly guarantee it are "the best they got" but they certainly CAN'T get the better of me disproving my points on hosts files' mulitiple nigh ubiquitous value to end users...

APK

P.S.=> In fact? I'd almost WAGER per #5 above in this case, that it's Wladimir Palant (AdBlock creator) who wrote me by email, 1st, saying "hosts are a shitty solution" - well, when I confonted him in email reply to show me that "Almost ALL ADS BLOCKED" can do MORE than custom hosts? Can you not see that you come off like a raving lunatic? Whether or not you are posting facts isn't the issue.

It's a fact that the earth orbits the sun. But if I post:

The EARTH orbits the SUN. THE EARTH ORBITS THE SUN. EARTH around sun. Not sun around EARTH. I am right and all my detractors that troll me are being paid by flat-earthers to harass me.

..And I jump on slashdot and post a page full of that every time the subject of the sun comes up on slashdot, I would be obviously mentally ill.

Alexander, did you even read the post that you linked back to? It describes pretty much exactly what you're doing here. I can't tell if you're an Andy Kaufman style comic maverick or if you're a paranoid schizophrenic. Anonymous Coward | about a month ago | (#47261479)

1.) Is the topic here about cybercriminals and their usual tools (maliciously coded sites, phishing, & malware + botnets, etc.)?

2.) Will my program prevent users from being infected by them when it gets the hostnames/domainnames/servers involved blocked in its output file (hosts)??

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47220173)

Back to the mothership? Me = alien?? Ok, since I just saw Man of Steel recently (Loved it, though MORE of a Marvel fan here), & it was excellent on ALL levels!

(Especially the statement it makes to all of us as human beings since, imo @ least, the world NEEDS that more now than ever),

Thus - here goes a quote from it & WHY I did this program, gratis:

"You will give the people of earth an ideal to strive for. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall (AdBlock, RequestPolicy, Ghostery & DNS even certainly have - I do it better & even help the latter via this method), but in time, they will join you in this son. In time, you will help THEM, accomplish wonders..."

It's the LEAST I can do, to give back IF/WHEN I can freely to others in regard to this phenonmenon known as the internet... it's changing the world, but unfortunately it's also being victimized & so are its users...

So, I did the education & the professional hands-on in the trenches for nearly 2 decades now, & it changed MY LIFE for the BETTER by far (allowing me to empower others and to have a creative career I truly love in the art & science of computing I've done well in for a livelyhood, as well as in publications in this field + technical trade shows, commercial code to my credit sold by certified MS partners etc. - et al).

No hard work is wasted... it paid off.

So, the LEAST I can do, is help others vs. the threats I've noted in my replies and why.

Other methods (antivirus & my inferior browser addon competitors are failing, even DNS is under threat - this fixes that latter one, & does a BETTER JOB on far more levels, more efficiently than the former(s), by far... no questions asked).

I feel that once you find what it is you love + do for a living, it is YOUR DUTY as a human being to help others with it, if & when you can. I am with this.

Mine's recommended as the best of its kind there is by a respected member of the security community in Malwarebytes' hpHosts site @ the top of the page they host my app for me on -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... [hosts-file.net]

I invite YOU & others, to OUTDO me!

Since none of you have managed to validly technically disprove my points on hosts here, ever, & for years - so learn to be OF SERVICE TO OTHERS - you'd be surprised where it takes you. Trolling won't...period.

You need to read this reply to your fellow troll & consider it, for YOUR OWN GOOD -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] & this + consider it, for your own existence -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org]

I say this, because I can't hate you!

"Why complain then completely off topic?" is bad syntax. "complain" is a verb, yet you're using adjective phrase "off topic" as an adverb.

"Why complain off topic?" cannot be parsed. I would not be so arrogant as to assume that I can correctly interpret a malformed question, so - rather than trying to rewrite it so it makes sense - I was offering you the opportunity to state what you meant. Your refusal to do this suggests that you saw no problem with your English, from which I infer a deficient understanding of the language you're now typing. You are either young, dull, or a beginning non-native speaker - which is it?

I have no qualifications in English beyond high school. Why are you so obsessed with the fact that I stated that I was not a licensed shrink? Which inadequacy are you projecting, exactly? Tell me more about yourself: your aspirations and what you feel you have achieved in life. I am intrigued.

I may not reply further as I am going to have a bath now. I have recently got into seafaring fiction and may be there for a long time - there are advantages to my luddite penchant for dead-tree publishing, you know! Good day, imbecile.

You're off topic evading a simple question. The troll reveals himself. Apk's not off topic. He has a good idea that works http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] and you are running away like Wladimir Palant of Adblock did from apk. Lying about being a med student and trolling off topic is not a way to live a life. Thanks for being so stupid. You proved my point for me. Your reaction being reduced to illogical off topic ad hominem attacks does the rest. Thanks.

Best change your alleged major. I wouldn't want you for a doctor. You can't answer or understand simple questions. You did show you understood and read his posts however and are now evading simple questions. You are lying and trolling. Nothing more. It is a waste of your time and obviously limited intellect.

OK, I'll admit it, when I came into this thread I didn't expect to find someone riding in and white knighting apk. I tip my fedora to you. I'll like to understand more about your aversion for medicine, however. Is it that you have had trouble convincing your doctor that you have some particular difficulty? Did someone offer you what you feel was an incorrect diagnosis - perhaps a personality disorder which you felt was admonishing your whole being? Or is your obsession with the relation between medicine and "intellect" simply the result of feeling shame that you didn't make it in medical school? Enquiring minds want to probe.

If you can't understand his simple question it's you with the problem (of illiteracy) http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] then you resorted to the typical troll line of attack (weak and off topic) on spelling or grammar nazi garbage that isn't germane to the topic at hand. Apk has been on topic and has what seems like a good preventative cure or vaccine here. He's more of a doctor or rather virologist than you will ever be and I certainly do not believe you're a med student by any stretch of the imagination except your own imagination perhaps.

Re:Thanks Molochi (I *think*?)... apk (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47220681)

He was asked to prove he is in fact a med student. He can't. He's no med student. He's a troll that tossed names and was ran off by apk using facts these trolls can't disprove either. It is funny to watch him work them against themselves.

Re:Thanks Molochi (I *think*?)... apk (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47220831)

How does someone prove they're a med student and why does it matter anyway? I've just read the thread properly and AC was accused of being a "SiDeWaLk-ShRiNk" so pointed out that he/she is not medically qualified but wasn't trying to diagnose apk anyway so it's not relevant.

It seems you're turning an admission of limited skill ("I'm not a doctor, just a student") into a claim of ability. But then you're defending an obvious kook ("apk using facts" lulz), so I suppose IHBT. *gets more caffeine for my trolldar*

Learn to read your source (I was there the day this came out & I FLOORED LordLimecat for what you're doing with the quote below)

First - I use Win7 64-bit & it works.

NOW Here is your "fix" per that same article & the very quote I destroyed LordLimecat a user here with ->http://www.ghacks.net/2012/08/19/you-cant-block-facebook-using-windows-8s-hosts-file/ per this quote from that page I used when this all came out (an update to the original article):

"Update: Tom just pointed out that turning off Windows Defender, which basically is Microsoft Security Essentials, in Windows 8 will resolve the issue."

You should READ MORE CLOSELY... perhaps (& yes, you CAN do this) even making an EXCEPTION on hosts itself, the file, will work... it's doable in Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials.

AND, there ya go!

I mean im sure its a huge problem that people like fans and ticketholders are going to be targeted, but customers have always enjoyed being the target of crime. The real issue is that we decided to bring one of the most expensive, prestigious sports competitions with an array of elaborate infrastructure requirements and expsnsive hosting obligations to a country with a 25% poverty rate and epidemic levels of child starvation and violent crime. Sure it makes Brazillian politicians and the cloistered elite feel special but when you factor the average brazillian into the equation it was a pretty god damn wreckless decision to take two billion out of their economy and piss it away on a single sports event.

erroneus (253617) | about a month and a half ago | (#47220291)

Brazil isn't quite "first world." They may be soccer fans, but they are rabid, brutal, dismembering, beheading, soccer fans. This is something FIFA from which should stay as far away as possible.

Would anyone think selecting any African nation as a site for the world cup is a good idea? Brazil was a bad idea for similar reasons. "Bad Neighborhood."

What is a "bad neighborhood" or "bad area?" We seem to try to avoid a glaringly obvious issue by blaming the surroundings instead of the people. "Don't go into that bad area!" Is it the area that's bad? Is the the land? The flora? No. It's the people. Don't go around bad people! And this is where things become much more clear and clear why people seek to avoid the obvious. It's RACISM!

People need to give up linguistic obfuscation as a means of avoiding the truth. How many times will we change the word we use to avoid saying what we think? We went from negros all manner of other terms, which at the time were okay to say, but before long was recognized as offensive due to the meaning adaptation and then we moved on to another word meaning the same thing. Seriously -- how many words do we use to identify black people and of those which were intended to be "nice words" became bad ones? How did that happen? "Colored people?" Once good, now bad. Can't say that but the NAACP didn't change its name. This isn't really about black people, this is just an example supporting my rant on linguistic obfuscation.

Linguistic obfuscation is a way of avoiding and confusing the truth of a situation. What we're dealing with is a mass of people who do not behave well. And while no mass of people behaves well, white or otherwise, there are varying degrees which are clear to the observer -- very clear.

A problem cannot be solved, resolved, avoided or even mitigated by avoiding or denying the causes.

I would seriously love it if we could all get along and live together. I really would. I don't hate anyone because of what they look like. I hate the behavior as it is not conducive to the peace and harmony I want for all of humanity. But we can't have it without a common subscription to an understanding of what mutual respect means and how well we live our lives in accordance with that understanding. Different cultures/religions/peoples bring disparate understandings to the whole and that causes problems. If they can't be re-/solved, they must be contained. Otherwise we're inviting peaceful people in to mingle with non-peaceful people, and the obvious will occur as it has every single time in the past.

FIFA blew it. They selected a "bad area." And by that, I mean they selected the wrong people to host the event. THE WRONG PEOPLE. I'm not going to hide behind linguistic obfuscation. The Wrong People.

That's a thought for the day... the week.. keep at it.

Did you notice where the previous World Cup was held? That's right, South Africa. Which arguably is even "worse" than Brazil. Yet the World Cup happened, few if any tourists were mugged, raped, quartered and shot. People visited the country without particular hassle.

While I agree that World Cup and Olympics have now transcended their function and are a cesspool of waste and corruption, denying them to poorer countries is not right. These are global events, and they deserve to be hosted globally. If then the local governments make fool of themselves, let them, and let that be a lesson for the future.

I would encourage you to look closer. Just because the mainstream media didn't cover the trouble doesn't mean it didn't happen. Other news sources would disagree with your assertion that horrible things didn't happen to the visitors in S.Africa. But it is certainly true that crime was reduced while the world cup was being held, so in "relative terms" it's true. But it was also extremely temporary. They almost literally declared martial law in the region where the cup was held, but surrounding areas? Not so much. Visitors who wandered outside of designated areas did so at their own peril and were informed of such.

The word "bubble" comes to mind.

I was there in South Africa for the World Cup. Were you? If not, you don't get to pass off rumors as facts. And if you're one of those racist Afrikaners, your opinion means nothing because a lot of you are still living in the past.

I don't know where this "They almost literally declared martial law" stuff comes from. I stayed in the home of some South African friends, who by the way would have been classified as "colored" in the old Apartheid system, and other than having a lot more tourists, it was pretty much life goes on as usual there. I didn't see any unusual numbers of police or military anywhere. I went to two different major cities and even went with a friend to Kruger National Park for a few days and at no time did I see any unusual number of police or military, nor did I hear on the local news about tourists being the victims of crime. Yes, I'm sure that somewhere some tourist there got victimized in some way, but this suggestion that there was plenty of crime that got covered up is just nonsense. Your reference to the "mainstream media" troubles me quite a bit because that could suggest that you get your information from sources that the majority of us feel are unreliable and too politically oriented.

Re:FIFA blew it (1)

erroneus (253617) | about a month and a half ago | (#47223275)

Fact: violent crime DID happen -- just less of it
Fact: violent crime before the world cup is a huge problem in S.Africa
Fact: violent crime after the world cup is a huge problem in S. Africa
Fact: a virtual martial law had to be declared in order to have any form of peace and it wasn't because of some sort of "disaster" but rather to keep the NATURAL level of violent crime down to acceptable levels.

Please feel free to dispute any of those.

Re:FIFA blew it (1)

erroneus (253617) | about a month and a half ago | (#47223311)

Actually, it's interesting you mentioned manipulations by other nations. Turns out one of the core causes of the global banking meltdown was manipulations by other nations' banks to push for reduced regulatory limits and stuff like that. Brazil actually refused any of that and didn't suffer from the collapse. Now if you are saying that "they are allowed less participation because they didn't jump on the bandwagon to hell" then okay, I concede that point. But as far as other manipulation? Not seeing it -- you'll have to cite something.

If you were to take any of these so-called "bad people" out of the "bad area" and put them into a "good area" with the means to stay there and have access to the same amenities as their neighbors, they generally cease being "bad people". In summary, you're not only a not-so-closeted racist, but also have apparently never heard of economics.

That's actually NOT TRUE as has been shown time and time again. And trying to turn bad areas into good ones ("gentrification") is widely fought as well. So moving the people doesn't work. Improving the neighborhood doesn't work. Please read the history of Liberia.

Is this greater in scale than the last Olympics? (1)

Is the Brazillian World Cup situation significantly worse than the London Olympics for the cybercrime aspects? I might expect that 'real world face to face crime' (pickpocketing, bag theft, etc. ) might be worse as you'd expect London (as part of a wealthier country) to be better policed than a poorer country with higher levels of local corruption and poverty such as Brazil, but are there big differences between the online crime situations (fake websites, email scams, etc.)? The latter would appear to be more transnational and not so affected by local social/economic/policing conditions.

...before they catch up with the way FIFA operates! (Notice how I did not claim FIFA were corrupt, although you might want to read about precisely how the World Cup is going to be played in the "too hot", non-football-playing, non drinking (let's face it, it's part of the culture) country of Qatar).

Easily w/ a file you have already: hosts files,- my sources in the security community are on it like "white on rice" vs. the sites & servers they will be using, blocking them out!

You can't be burned by what you can't touch!

APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:

http://start64.com/index.php?o... [start64.com]

(Details of hosts' benefits enumerated in link)

Summary:

---

A. ) Hosts do more than AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default) + Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse", or Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org]

B. ) Hosts add reliability vs. downed or redirected DNS + secure vs. known malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... [slashdot.org] w/ less added "moving parts" complexity + room 4 breakdown,

C. ) Hosts files yield more speed (blocks ads & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote DNS), security (vs. malicious domains serving mal-content + block spam/phish & trackers), reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable DNS, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ ISP level + weak vs FastFlux + DynDNS botnets), & anonymity (vs. dns request logs + DNSBL's).

---

* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ a faster level (ring 0) vs redundant browser addons (slowing up slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ OS, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).

** Addons are more complex + slowup browsers & in message passing (use a few concurrently - you'll see)

*** Addons slowdown SLOWER usermode browsers layering on MORE - & bloating memory consumption too + hugely excessive CPU usage (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... [mozilla.org] )

SO - Instead, I work w/ what you have in kernelmode, via hosts (A tightly integrated PART of the IP stack itself)

I don't want to be anything like you therefore I will never use your recommended hosts file. I am sure you will post a bigass wall of text about why you can't understand that. You are very single minded after all. I am sure you will talk about anything and everything except how fucked up you sound and how inevitably that makes people think of you as a raving lunatic. Maybe you can use lots of bold text and strange capitalization, that will really change the facts!

Then don't - nobody's forcing you to (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47221335)

However, you're stupid to use other clearly inferior methods that do less and yet add more stupidly and are less efficient and not nearly as capable. He's not single minded. He's right and facts back him up. Especially here vs. your ac trolling bullshit and it's funnier than hell http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] how you walked right into his trap and started it too, setting yourself up like a bowling pin for apk to annihiilate a cowardly little ac weasel like you easily as usual, with cold hard fact eating your words.

by the way most people here are techies. we know how a fucking hosts file works. save the "series of tubes" basic explanations for the dumb masses mmmkay?

You certainly aren't (0)

Anonymous Coward | about a month and a half ago | (#47221343)

Else you wouldn't have had to "eat your words" in a 57++:1 ratio against you http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] where you can "argue with the numbers". It's not that apk is smart. He uses facts and truth with undeniable backing. You on the other hand don't have any and opened your mouth and inserted foot, lmao! Tell us: How did "eating your words" taste?

Your post makes no sense troll: You can't validly disprove apk's points on hosts http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... [slashdot.org] so you're reduced to trolling. Seek professional psychiatric help for your obsession and accept the fact that you're not half the person he is and you never will be.
