Case Mods for G4 Towers

Desktops (Apple) 32

An anonymous user writes "I was surfin' around looking for a new case for PC I'm building and I cam across the MacSkinz site showing custom paint jobs for G4 towers. I think there's a certain irony in modding Apple products for appearance since that's so much part of the price in the first place. Gotta admit, they look sweet 'though."

I would love to get a Dual 1Ghz G4 with one these. Fast and cool. I have a 867 G4 right now but the college owns it and I will have to give back at some point when my "testing" is over.

Mac weasel from way back... (4, Interesting)

Bravo_Two_Zero (516479) | more than 12 years ago | (#3091384)

I'm an admitted Mac weasel from way back. I still have a Mac Classic II on my desk just for... *gulp* ... appearance. It's one of the coolest forms I've ever seen. Working on it is like listening to Bach; it makes me feel like I'm doing better work.

And I know that all sounds lame. I know it isn't true, but Shiva H. Vishnu, I love those machines so.

I would liken the case modding (from the line about design being a big part of the price) to customizing Harleys. They're overpriced and not popular because of performance (not dissin' the Harleys, mind you). People pay premium prices just so they can pay someone else premium prices to make their Harley unique. Kinda fitting that one flag case mod made me think immediately of Easy Rider.

Very informative links for sure, and I think they're quite on-topic

I just read your post summary page.

You only comment on Apple-related topics.

Shouldn't you be doing your work, astroturfer? Does Mister Jobs pay you to doodle around here and troll the geeks?

For a pretty nicely done G4 hack, see Not mine (mines an illuminated iMac) but very nice...

Ug-ly (2, Interesting)

Steve Cowan (525271) | more than 12 years ago | (#3091622)

I have often thought that those case mods are butt ugly. If I had a G4 tower in my kids' room I could imagine defacing it with something as gaudy as that, but there is a certain subtlety lacking from all the graphics they make available.

Why not decorate them up to maybe look a little more artistic, or at least tasteful? It seems to me that these are the brightest, most overstated graphics that could be used for this.

And it's a shame, because I think the idea of dressing up a G4 tower is really cool... the amazing part is that of the 30-ish designs available I can't tolerate even one of them.

Re:Ug-ly (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3093715)

I do think the brushed aluminum skins look nice. The problem is, they look so much like my stock graphite G4, I would have a hard time shelling out $50 for a set.

As for the rest of the designs, I agree with you. I would not shell out $50 to put Skullz on my box.

Hmmm. Maybe my problem is just that I wouldn't shell out $50. Nawwwwwww.

Price Of Macs (5, Insightful)

hotsauce (514237) | more than 12 years ago | (#3091790)

I think there's a certain irony in modding Apple products for appearance since that's so much part of the price in the first place.

And those Firewire ports. And that wireless hardware. And that composite video out. And the stock Nvidea card. And all those consumer apps. And...

Don't try to compare Apple hardware to bargin basement powersupply-cpu-harddrive boxes. There is no comparison.

Price Of PCs (1)

castlan (255560) | more than 12 years ago | (#3128803)

While I agree with the content of your post, I disagree with the emphasis. As successful as the commoditization of computing has been, no-name commodity-composed machines should not be considered the default for the purchase of a new system. Most of thse arguments equally apply to SGI workstations, or even many name brand x86 architecure system vendors.

Apple is just another of many recognizable high quality systems vendors. You emphasize that "Apple hardware" should not be peered with plebian PC hardware. I'd like to remind everybody that before the iMac revolution, Apple was open, and there were a handfull of Mac clones available that offered value and selection. Apple killed the openness of their platform that was very promising. While this was good for Apple Computer, this was bad for consumers who are subject to vendor-dependance. If something ever happens to Apple Inc., then Macintosh consumers are screwed. Now Apple may include 3rd party graphics hardware, modernized bus interfaces, etc. But I still smell the corpse of Power Computing, and fear the despotism fostered by Apple.

BTW, you definitely deserve your moderations for this post, but I strongly feel that you should change your .sig file.

um... (1)

themexican (245083) | more than 12 years ago | (#3093693)

Apple's G4 case is not a big part of it's price. The plastics cost about $14. Maybe a little less now that they have been mass produced for so long...

Re:um... (2)

NonSequor (230139) | more than 12 years ago | (#3097900)

And I suppose you think that the people who designed the G4 case work for free. There are plenty of costs other than the materials.

Re:um... (1)

nycdewd (160297) | more than 12 years ago | (#3101078)

and i suppose you have some hard facts and figures to back up the claim that the looks cost so much?

i thought not.

Pre-Packaged Mods (2, Insightful)

Elfboy (144703) | more than 12 years ago | (#3094436)

As someone who routinely decks out any hardware they own (lets face it, the beige G3's needed it) I find it puzzling that someone would personalize a computer by buying a pre-painted case for it. Isn't the fun of modding your comp doing it youself to suit your tastes? I'd link pics of mine but I like my ISP.

Then again I also laugh at people buying alternative lifestyles from Hot Topic.

Re:Pre-Packaged Mods (1)

hondo77 (324058) | more than 12 years ago | (#3094560)

Laugh at me if you will but Hot Topic is the only place to get Invader Zim shirts. If I have to get laughed at, so be it.

Back on-topic, though, some of us are not artistically inclined so pre-fabbed skins are the only way my Mac is going to get dressed up.

Re:Pre-Packaged Mods (2, Informative)

Strog (129969) | more than 12 years ago | (#3094991)

My skill would probably dictate that I get the pre made ones. You can take the sides off and polish the color off. Then you can put what ever color/texture on it you like. Since you are painting the inside, the finish is real hard to mess up. You can also get a clear skin [] from Appleskinz if you are looking for your own style.

Pointless Mod (2, Insightful)

ian_po (234542) | more than 12 years ago | (#3101319)

From the Mac skins FAQ:
Do the Skinz cover the access handle?

Yes they do. But since it is rare that you will need to open your case(install RAM?), and the fact that MacSkinz do not attach permanently and come off easily, we chose to hide the handle for a cleaner appearance
The target market for this case 'skin' is someone who does alot of mods to their case. Not being able to open the case is not an option for a modder.

A much better G4 Mod (1)
