of course they're going to try to keep ink sales (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Cowrad (571322) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472388)

Look at the economics -- a printer is a one-time sale; you've collected the customer's money, and they've got their printer. Ink is a fungible; it gets used up, and you have to buy more. If a printer manufacturer can come up with a mechanism to ensure that the people who buy their printers have to buy their ink, they have a steady revenue stream.

Look at the relative costs. Printer prices have been going down almost as fast as memory prices. With some of the low-end ink-jet printers, once you buy more than one or two OEM ink cartridges, you've spent more on cartridges than you did on the printer. And over the printer's lifetime, looking at the OEM costs for some of these ink-jet cartridges, you're going to spend on ink several times what you spent on the printer. Think about what the automobile market would be like if you had to buy your oil, gasoline, tires, and every other consumable or replacement component for your car from the company that made your car. That's what the printer manufacturers want.

Several companies tried, back when the high-resolution ink-jet printers were first coming out, to achieve that kind of control over the other fungible supply for printers -- paper. They brought out special ink-jet paper 'specially designed for high-resolution printing' and ran ad campaigns suggesting that you would be producing sub-standard printouts if you used non-OEM paper. That lasted until the big paper manufacturers ramped up to produce the same products, and unlike ink cartridges, there was no way for the printer manufacturers to put in mechanisms to force consumers to use OEM paper.

Pluto: A Ridiculous Liberal Myth (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3472396)

This is a fair and accurate rebuttle which provides evidence to the contrary concerning the existance of "Pluto":

The occurrance of a false-scientific conspiracy is rare. What am I referring to, you ask? I refer to the existance (or, lack of) the "Planet Pluto." Supposedly "discovered" in 1930 by Astronomer Clyde Tombaugh by accident, was merely a clever story to claim credit for a "new planet" and scientific precedence. The pure and simple truth is the FACT that the planet Pluto does not exist. The reason for orbital disturbances beyond the planet Neptune are explained in a rather simple non-planetoid manner. Rather than a planet-sized mass made mostly of frozen water, methane and carbon-oxygen compounds, a more plausable suggestion is a mobile gravity well or dark matter pocket of comperable space-distortion magnitude. Contrary to popular belief and physical evidence, the Oort cloud does not possess any other masses similar in magnitude to "Pluto." In fact, the second largest Oort fragment is all but .00012% in mass magnitude, compared to what is known as "The Planet Pluto." The assertion that a mysterious ball of ice exists by itself beyond a real gas planet [Neptune] with no subsequent balls of ice similar size-magnitude beyond this supposed "planet."

As far as optical "evidence" is concerned, Oort fragments aligning in a per-chance optical arrangement distorts sunlight in a manner that appears planetoid, but is really rather faint to be considered a "planet." Reconsider your universe: Pluto does not exist.

Dutch Politician Fortuyn Is Shot Dead
Filed at 3:20 p.m. ET
HILVERSUM, Netherlands (AP) -- Right-wing Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn was shot six times and killed Monday as he left a radio interview.

Dutch television said the 54-year-old politician was shot in the head, neck and chest. The attack came nine days before national elections, and opinion polls had predicted Fortuyn would lead one of the largest parties in parliament.

Prime Minister Wim Kok confirmed Fortuyn's death.

``After this assassination, Pim Fortuyn is gone,'' Kok said in The Hague after breaking off a campaign engagement in the western city of Haarlem. ``This is a deep tragedy. I am shocked. This is a deep tragedy for those close to him, for his loved ones and for our country and our democracy.''

It was the first time in modern history that a Dutch political leader was assassinated. ``These are things you thought were just not possible in the Netherlands,'' said Ad Melkert, new leader of the ruling Labor Party and its candidate for prime minister. ``It's a low-point for our democracy.''

He called Islam a ``backward'' culture and laid claim to leadership of the Netherlands' perennially vacant political right.

``I saw Pim Fortuyn lying on the ground with a bullet wound in his head,'' said television reporter Dave Abspoel.

Fortuyn's platform seemed out of place in the Netherlands, which has a reputation for liberalism. It was the first country to legalize gay marriages, regulate prostitution, approve and control euthanasia, and tolerate the over-the-counter sale of marijuana in hundreds of ``coffee shops.''

Though tolerant of such subcultures, Fortuyn's popularity has exposed a deep vein of suspicion of immigrants in Europe's most densely populated country, about 2 million of whose 16 million people are not native Dutch. About 800,000 are Muslims, predominantly Moroccans and Turks.

In the Netherlands, most political leaders travel without bodyguards, often using public transportation. The only exceptions were Kok, as head of government. Fortuyn, however, had his own bodyguards and his party headquarters in Rotterdam were always guarded.

Police cordoned off Fortuyn's house in Rotterdam, where he often met supporters and gave interviews. Followers lay bouquets outside the house.

Fortuyn had recently expressed fears for his safety. A few weeks ago, Islamic protesters threw cream pies laced with urine in his face.

The difference is that there isn't a "microsoft.slashdot.org" like there is an "apple.slashdot.org".

They HAVE to have the different categories or nothing makes sense on the apple site.

I do agree however that in the filter portion there should be a way to just say NO to apple stuff and it will filter out everything Apple.

Case mods... (4, Insightful)

Cmdr Taco (luser) (578089) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472429)

...strike me as a bit, hmmm, useless. Unless, of course, it's for something necessary, like piping cooling water (or liquid N) for cooling. Sure, some of the blinking/neon lights are kinda cool to impress the friends and all, but my techno friends are generally more impressed by cool hardware/software implementations (real hacking) and generally consider the other trappings to be a bit frilly. The most impressive 'case mod' I've ever done was to actually install all the panels and properly close up the case on my wife's computer so it looked presentable. My own computers, on the other hand... hell, I can't even find the side panels, musta thrown'm out. I've got too much external hardware, ribbon cables, protoboards, etc, dandling out of most of them that I couldn't possibly even button up the case, let alone fancy it up with super-cool visual effects. oh, well, too each their own.

Re:Case mods... (0)

I.T.R.A.R.K. (533627) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472525)

Heh, I know the feeling.
In the four years I had my old computer, the front and side panels were never on it.
Hardware was being swapped so often, I figured it was a waste of time screwing the thing back on.

Re:Case mods... (1)

zaphod110676 (211758) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472686)

That's why I finally bought an Antec case that has a screwless slide off side panel and drive bays that can be removed with no tools. I can have the whole things pulled apart in less than a minute. Not only do I have easy access but my wife doesn't complain about all of the "naked" computers.

Of course the couple of P150s that I have lying around for firewalls are as naked as ever but they live in a heap in the corner.

Re:Case mods... (0)

I.T.R.A.R.K. (533627) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472748)

My newer Athlon has a similar case. The door is on the side, rather than being the entire outer shell. The screws on the back can be turned by hand, and the thing just slides right off.
Still, I find it's sitting beside the computer, detached from the case more often than not.
Maybe I'm just a lazy bastard. ;)

TACO-SNOTTING IS DYING (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3472431)

Netcraft has confirmed: Taco-snotting is dying.

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Taco-snotting community when recently IDC confirmed that Taco-snotting accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all homosexual acts. Coming on the heels of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that Taco-snotting has lost more fag practitioners, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Taco-snotting faggots are collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Faggot World comprehensive snotting test.

You don't need to be a Katz to predict Taco-snotting's future. The handwriting is on the wall: Taco-snotting faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Taco-snotting because Taco-snotting is dying. Things are looking very bad for Taco-snotting. As many of us are already aware, Taco-snotting continues to lose faggotshare. White ink flows like a river of bubbly, thick jizz. The circle-snot is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core snotters.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Circle-snotting leader Jeff "Homos" Masterbates states that there are 7000 snotters of the circle-snot. How many users of anal snot are there? Let's see. The number of circle-snotting versus anal snot posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 anal snot users. SnotOS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of anal snot posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of SnotOS. A recent article put the circle-snot at about 80 percent of the Taco-snotting market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 circle-snot users. This is consistent with the number of circle-snot Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of CowboiKneel's walnuts, abysmal sales and so on, the circle-snot went out of business and was taken over by SNOTi who sell another troubled Taco-snot. Now SNOTi is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another gay whorehouse.

All major surveys show that Taco-snotting has steadily declined in faggotshare. Taco-snotting is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Taco-snotting is to survive at all it will be among heterosexual hobbyist dabblers. Taco-snotting continues to decay. Nothing short of a jizz-soaked miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Taco-snotting is dead.

Fact: Taco-snotting is dead.

NO! VOYAGER IS DYING! (0, Interesting)

Voyager Sucks Ass (570844) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472477)

Star Trek: Voyager is dying.

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered *Voyager community when last month Nielsen confirmed that *Voyager accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all viewers. Coming on the heels of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that *Voyager has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict *Voyager future. The hand writing is on the wall: *Voyager faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for *Voyager because *Voyager is dying. Things are looking very bad for *Voyager. As many of us are already aware, *Voyager continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood. Tuvok is the most endangered of them all.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Star Trek: Voyager producer Rick Berman states that there are 7000 viewers of *Voyager. How many fans of Tuvok are there? Let's see. The number of *Voyager versus Chakotay-specific posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 Tuvok fans. Tuvok posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of Chakotay-specific posts. Therefore there are about 700 Tuvok fans. A recent article put Seven of Nine at about 80 percent of the *Voyager fanbase. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Seven of Nine fans. This is consistent with the number of Seven of Nine Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Paramount, abysmal ratings and so on, Star Trek: Voyager was ended as a series and the syndication rights were sold to another troubled company. Now that company is also dead, its corpse turned over to another charnel house.

All major surveys show that *Voyager has steadily declined in the ratings. *Voyager is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *Voyager is to survive at all it will be among hardcore Star Trek nerd fucks who are hoping to see Seven of Nine in a bikini. *Voyager continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *Voyager is dead.

Fact: Star Trek: Voyager is dead.

Basically it's a mostly standard case mod, but he took a piece of plexiglas and melted it either over something or by cutting a hole in something and letting it sag down through it while warm. (Hadn't gotten to his description, just the pictures.)
A neat idea, but nothing totally amazing.

That said, I very well may take this new concept into consideration when I attempt my first real mod this summer. Try it again later when it's less slashdotted if you're into case mods.

Otherwise, just suffice it to say that he made a little dome out of plexiglas.

and besides, you could at least manage to recognize the word "Deutsch" to mean German. Would that be so hard?

I thought Deutsch was a feminine care product? They had a commercial just the other night with a woman in a sun dress running through a meadow. I think the children of the corn were after her, or something...

Casemods can get immature (1, Flamebait)

TibbonZero (571809) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472478)

Case mods can get a little immature. I am all for being able to put the most air through my computer, and OC it alot, but really- isn't it just easier sometimes to just buy something a little faster? No that isn't the creative way, but the lights and all just get to me after a while. At first they are cool, but then I think that you should really be working on keeping you box(es) running fast in the first place. Think about expandabilty and useablity of lights and stickers. Now some case mods (like switchable fans) are acutally useable.

I would like to know what ./ers in general think about case mods.. Do you have any? Are for for/against them? Think they are a waste of time? Good use of creativty?

Case mods are good for the "look at that, geeky, cool" factor, but I would never think about doing anything like that myself. As you said, work I do on my computer is for the purpose of upgrading/repair, other than that I don't even want to shut down most of the time, much less open the case!

Re:Casemods can get immature (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3472597)

I'm interested in functional and practical case mods. I've made some minor mods over the years to this end.

I've used a Dremel tool to cust away the fan finger guards on the power supply so that there is less obstruction to air flow. I've mounted an extra case fan and cut away a circle of metal and case so that the air flow would not be blocked in anyway. Since I don't use a floppy drive too often, I freed up a slot in the drive bay by mounting the floppy drive in the rear of the case above the power supply. This is a cool mod because the floppy is still there if you need it but it is out of the way. Pretty unglamorous mods but my high performance scsi drives are now cool to the touch.

My next case project will be modifying a microwave oven case. You can find a microwave oven on garbage day in my town just by cruising the streets. A microwave box would make an ideal case mod. It would be really cool to incorporate the keypad and display. Also a microwave oven already has a fan built in, and it is well sheilded to RF. And best of all, discarded microwaves are readily available.

I saw some people in college do a case mod. It just don't get it. It's like the kid in high school that puts neon lights and a loud muffler on his car. Aside from spend a lot of time and money you have not done a whole lot to improve the functionality of the car. I would rather put the money into a new component and the time into making Windows not crash. Of course I never have enough money, and the latter is the impossible dream, so what the heck, get out the spray paint!

Re:Casemods can get immature (1)

kpansky (577361) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472683)

I agree that there are far too many frilly and silly case mods out there, but at the same time as I recently found out mods are required.

I run an athlon sytem (1.4GHz DDR FSB) and it runs very hot not so much because of the proc as the hard drives. I have 4x80GB drives crammed in a standard atx minitower. Every pci slot is filled. Space is tight. Heat can build up so fast that the entire system just dies -- very hard. I had to apply some case mods that really increased air circulation and heat transfer efficiency. As a side effect, the case also looks cool :).

Re:Casemods can get immature (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3472792)

Sorry, that's not cool. It's stupid. If you're cramming in 4 80GB drives (1", 7200RPM no doubt), they're churning out enough heat to damage themselves, let alone the Athlon and motherboard. Man, I remember the jokes about "smelting with the pentium." Leave the stock fan on an AthlonXP and watch it start to turn cherry red... Anyway, if you want to ruin your stuff, go right ahead. Just don't call it cool.

I think it would be a very good idea to throw the contemporary PC design as far as we can, yes. It is, IMNSHO, butt ugly. There is no need to keep it.

Compaq has done a little along these lines, at least. You can now get some Compaq boxen in black instead of the regular surgical appliance grey/beige everyone else seems to find so wonderful. (Direct IBM PC legacy, isn't it?)

Given two equal boxen, one which looked ok and one with the mainstream dirty-white case, I would happily pay a modest premium for the better-looking one, just as I would with a car.

Does anybody know where you might find those case LEDs (the ones with the pair of wires and the motherboard connector) for sale without having to buy the whole case (or a lot of 10,000)? I looked forever for those (I have a case with a few ATA cards in it and I wanted to connect up the LEDs to so I can see which chains are busy and what card is causing the occasional problems).

Have you ever considered just buying regular LED's and just hacking some sort of connector onto the cards? LED, some speaker wire, and maybe some aluminum foil & duct tape should work nicely.

Re:On the subject of case mods (1)

ForceOfWill (79529) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472655)

Radio Shack does sell LEDs, just without the connector. They also sell chip sockets, which I hear can be good for breaking up into smaller connectors. I'm not sure if they sell the actual 'correct' connector for this, but you can always get the LED, some wire, and a chip connector, and have fun soldering it all together :)

Why do PC cases continue to be "difficult"? (3, Interesting)

burgburgburg (574866) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472697)

I've read alot of PC case mod stories linked to from here, and I've enjoyed them. But one question keeps popping into my head: why do PC cases continue to be so generally difficult to work with?

I have a B&W G3. When I want to add something, I pull the ring and swing the side down. Everything is open and easy to access. 2 seconds. A child could do it. And my G3 is over 3 years old.

I have yet to see a PC case out there that approaches the ease of access that Apple had 3 years ago. Am I just not up the market? I know that alot of manufacturers were adding colorful plastic sections to their cases. I've seen the neon additions and clear windows from the modders. Why hasn't even one manufacturer tried to make the case an easy thing to work with?

function vs image (4, Insightful)

Cheetahfeathers (93473) | more than 12 years ago | (#3472718)

WTF don't we see some cases that go for function mods, rather than these ugly image mods? Something as nicely built as Apple's G4 towers, or as quiet and small as the cube of theirs. Most computers totally suck when it comes to easy of putting it together and taking it apart. Look at an SGI O2 as a hugely high standard when it comes to case design. You can take the thing apart and put it back together in under a minute.

Of course most of these are beyond the ability of a typical case modder, who is just out to make their ugly PC even uglier.

Oh well, a geek can dream, right?

Basically it's a mostly standard case mod, but he took a piece of plexiglas and melted it either over something or by cutting a hole in something and letting it sag down through it while warm. (Hadn't gotten to his description, just the pictures.)
A neat idea, but nothing totally amazing.
That said, I very well may take this new concept into consideration when I attempt my first real mod this summer. Try it again later when it's less slashdotted if you're into case mods.
Otherwise, just suffice it to say that he made a little dome out of plexiglas
