Moderation - The tool of islamic terror (-1, Offtopic)

ringbarer (545020) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823732)

Reposting again. Managed to get up to 50 Karma, posted ONE pro-Troll message, and got mod-bombed. This diatribe was truer than I thought. CLiT, I shall be honored if you accept me as a member!

Visitors to the website slashdot.org [slashdot.org] will by now have surely heard of the act of Moderation. This is where a contributor's post can be 'Moderated' either positively or negatively, depending on how the Moderator perceives the value of the post. There is a sliding scale of total moderation points, from -1 to 5, along with snappy summaries of the reason for moderation, such as "Funny", "Insightful", or the ever popular "Troll". An additional benefit offered to Moderators is the ability to ban a poster from contributing, by negatively moderating enough of his postings in a 24 hour period.

In order to retain some level of fairness for the Slashdot population, the Slashdot Editors (adopting the role of 'Benevolent Dictators') have implemented a scheme whereby regular users of Slashdot, chosen essentially at random, are given the ability to act as Moderators.

This underlines an inherent flaw in the system. Psychological studies have shown that in any community, no matter how small, should a random sampling of people be given the slightest grasp of power, they will immediately abuse it. There is a primal, evolutionary desire in Man to place himself higher than his peers by whatever measurement they can muster. Slashdot Moderation provides the ideal means for which a man can prove himself more equal than others.

At the risk of invoking Godwin's Law at such an early point in my thesis, I have no choice but to compare Slashdot Moderation to the systematic genocide of the Jewish community in 1930's Germany.

A bold statement, I admit, and deliberately designed to shock, but I feel the statement is necessary. I shall now offer a more rational explanation, as well as a comparison of the parallels between Slashdot Culture, and the National Socialist regime.

First, some history. National Socialism did not spring up overnight. It grew from a feeling of national bitterness and resentment at the war reparations Germany was forced to make after World War One. Germany was a broken country, populated by desperate starving people. And to the desperate, an extreme ideology begins to seem like a rational choice.

The advent of new technology forces a paradigm shift in the way the beholders of that technology think. The Christianity Meme was made wide spread by the invention of the Gutenberg press. And the rise of National Socialism was made popular because of the invention of Cinema. Here we had a new means to control the flow of information to the populace, that they are willing to unquestioningly listen to due to the 'novelty factor' of moving pictures. It is no coincidence that some of the best Cinematography of the early 20th Century came out of the National Socialist propaganda machine.

Why is this the case? It is yet another fault of man that a new means of distributing memes is perceived, due to the 'newness' of the medium, to have a greater 'validity' than older media. Those harnessing new inventions have the power to win control of the hearts and minds of others.

With the tools in place, who should the National Socialists target? Clearly, as a counterpoint to Man's desire to hold power over others, there is also a desire to resent the success of others. If someone is successful, they reduce the self-worth of their beholders. Although times were harsh in Germany in the prelude to World War II, there were still successful inhabitants of that country. Possessing shrewd business acumen as well as the contacts in other countries needed to maintain support in such a poverty stricken and broken land, who else should deserve the wrath of the populace more than the Jews?

Fast-forward to the latter quarter of the 20th Century. Computing technology is focused in niche markets, and limited to big successful companies like IBM and Microsoft. As the markets were limited, there were also limited opportunities for employment. This gave rise to a rising number of college dropouts, seething with resentment and unable to relate to society beyond the staccato clatter of keyboards and the pallid green glow of an 80x24 text display, and lacking the basic business skills (and a smart suit) needed to secure employment at one of these companies.

At this time, a new invention was beginning to take hold in College campuses throughout the world. The Internet. As with the Gutenberg press and Cinema beforehand, this new technology would grow to spread one of the most virulent memes of the modern age - Open Source Software, created as the antithesis of successful business practise.

So, the parallels between the birth of Anti-Semetic National Socialism and the birth of Open Source Software have been made. Of course, it is easy to claim that A=B without providing further logical evidence in support. So, the next task of my thesis is to provide further parallels, and bring this discourse back to the initial focus on Slashdot Moderation.

Slashdot was conceived, in it's original 'Chips 'n' Dips' incarnation, as a vehemently anti-corporate Open Source website. Roughly 10-15 years down the line from the birth of Open Source, it has become saturated with propaganda, and now forms the centrepiece of the Open Source Development Network. An authority in it's field, Slashdot's success is in no small part due to the ability of the editors to 'pick and choose' valid news articles submitted by users, and present the same old tired "Open Source Good / Closed Source Bad" rhetoric time and time again, dabbling with anti-copyright and the right of the 'common man' to remove an artist's ability to gain compensation for the work. In essence, this is similar to the 'paring down' of artistic worth in 1930's Germany. If no-one is willing to contribute valid and vibrant art to the community, then all art shall become harsh and functional, possessing a certain intimidating aesthetic.

Which leads onto Open Source's shining achievement - Linux. This diatribe is not aimed towards Linux in particular, as it is a well-oiled, well-tuned machine. A technically adept Operating System, it is worthy of admiration by any rational man. The point of this thesis is not to attack the art produced by Open Source coders, which in itself is worthy, but to enlighten all as to the political processes behind the OSS movement.

By the same scale, it is hard to fault Mercedes for the technical excellence of the vehicles which were used by the National Socialist party. But the politics behind the party are what taint the image of Mercedes' vehicles of the era. The Swastika itself is a benign symbol, found this day in such diverse locations as Pokemon cards, but is permanently tainted with the history of the acts made under its auspice. In the same way, companies switching to Open Source solutions will begin to regard the Penguin with the same trepidation as their profits fall.

It should be worth noting at this point that IBM, previously one of the world's greatest companies, has begun reporting servere financial losses, no doubt due to its adoption of Open Source practises. This epoch-making event was NOT reported on Slashdot, even though articles were submitted.

And what of the other great company mentioned above? Microsoft, aka Micro$oft, Mickeysoft, Microshaft, Kro$oft, and many other derogatory and undeserved names. Throughout the previous 25 years, Microsoft has grown from strength to strength, again possessing shrewd business acumen as well as providing products that people want. This makes them the number one target for the OSS movement. Incapable of standing by their own merits, the OSS zealot would rather attack Microsoft as a priority than produce anything of worth for their community.

Slashdot Moderators, crazed with their limited new-found power, exhibit this behavior. It is a sad state of affairs that the majority of article moderations are negative. Where is the positive feedback and sense of social contribution? Nowhere to be found. Moderators are too focused on putting their peers down to make themselves appear superior, rather than doing the hard work and becoming better on their own terms.

As the National Socialists required a scapegoat, Slashdot Moderators require a constant stream of Postings to label '-1, Inferior'. Once a posting is reduced to the score of -1, it becomes invisible to the casual user. Again, this is a parallel to the Ghettoization of Germany upon the election of Hitler.

In essence this would not be so bad, were postings to be evaluated on their own terms. However, alongside the moderation of their postings, each user has a 'Karma' value, namely the sum of their worth to the Slashdot community. As a user's posts are moderated up or down, so their Karma fluctuates. As Karma becomes negative, a user's default posting score is reduced, until they are posting at a default of -1. Again, ghettoizing PEOPLE, not just their opinions.

This ghettoization is reinforced with the often fake belief that a negatively moderated post, and therefore the poster, is a "Troll". (Is it any wonder that such a name has been chosen to describe these people, invoking mental imagery of facial disfigurement and hooked noses?) As the Jews were accused of fraud, dishonesty and being subhuman animals, so too are Trolls accused of FUD, Crapflooding, and obfuscated goatse.cx links. Quite often, these 'undesirables' are capable of providing a valid insightful comment on a topic, but because it is in opposition to the Political dogma of Slashdot they are moderated back into their ghetto. The person becomes moderated, not their opinion.

This is just the thin end of the wedge. Although, as memes are transient, it is difficult to silence an opinion, it is trivial to silence a person. Upon the rise of National Socialism in Germany, the populace were motivated by propaganda into entering the Jewish Ghettos en masse with the sole purpose of causing as much damage as possible to Jewish businesses and residences. The infamous Krystalnacht. This parallels far too accurately with the Slashdot Editor's non-discouragement of the act of IP-banning. As mentioned above, this occurs when an individual user's postings are repeatedly moderated down in a short period. They then become incapable of posting any contributions themselves. In essence, they have been silenced, regardless of the worth of their postings.

Of course, the editors claim that Meta-Moderation is the panacea to solve this clear abuse of moderating privledge. But if a Meta Moderator is presented with a list of moderations that they disagree with, such as this targetted 'silencing' mentioned above, they cannot note them as such without in turn becoming an 'Undesirable' themselves, as too many Disagreements with the Moderation groupthink also result in loss of Karma.

Throughout all of this, the Editors have claimed a false level of detachment from the acts of moderation. In a same way, as the National Socialists gathered their power and began working on their Elite Political wing, The SS, they too remained detached from the civilians working in their name. Why? Because after inspiring the populace to such acts of violence through their propaganda, they could then claim that they were only giving the people what they want.

And then began the next stage of the atrocities. The Gestapo, Germany's secret police, were recruited from the best and the brightest of Germany's elite. As is the case now, the best and the brightest of society were often shunned and ostracized in society. In essence, the Gestapo were a tightly controlled 'Geek Army' of intelligent young men with a burning, seething resentment of normal society. The perfect psychological profile for the cause.

After all, give a normal man (with an active sex life) a gun and he will use it responsibly in self defence. Give a geek a gun and he will behave according to his sociopathic logic and hatred of the world he arrogantly presumes to be distant from. Ask yourself why Slashdot flat-out justified the murder of innocents at Columbine. And then ask yourself why, even for a brief moment, you almost began to sympathize with the killers after Jon Katz' manipulative and pseudo-emotive Hellmouth articles.

How this relates to Slashdot is clear. The majority of Slashdot posters are Sociopathic OSS zealots, unable through lack of social finesse or personal hygiene to mate regularly. Sexually and emotionally frustrated and with grudges to bear, incapable in their blinkered sense of self-righteousness of accepting any dissenting opinion than the OSS cause. Now give these people the opportunity to Moderate these dissenting opinions. Of course they are going to want to silence them, by any means necessary.

Now, the Slashdot Editors have admitted taking this silence of opinion into the next stage, by moderating whole swathes of 'undesirable' posts negatively. And then permanently banning anyone who moderates said posts back up from moderating EVER again! The result of this new policy? The few Moderators with any sense of fairness and decency are removed from the moderation pool, leaving the power ENTIRELY in the hands of the zealots. Clearly, positive moderation is discouraged under this regime, which is a direct parallel with the way the National Socialists moved their own sympathisers into positions of power throughout Europe.

So how does this compare to the genocide performed in Auschwitz and their ilk? I would like at this point to explain that in NO way do I wish to belittle the horrors that were performed in the name of National Socialism. The six million innocents killed were a cry of anguish from which humanity may never recover. And a vast distance in time and scope from a few banned posters on some shitty "My Favourite Links - now with comments" website. But these stories need to be retold before the horror is lost forever.

For the only thing that we learn from history is that we never learn anything from history. Time and time again, the St. Vitus dance is played out, we make the same mistakes, and we perpetually fail to see the warning signs.

So, moderators, the next time you moderate a rational, insightful post down, maybe because you disagree with it or because it's posted by a 'Known Troll', just ask yourself this...

"Am I really contributing to the Slashdot Community, or selfishly destroying it?"

Your argument is very eloquent and well thought out. Unfortunatly it's also highly misleading.

You know what I recall very few meta-mods I've done where someone was moderated down for their opinion (a few border-line calls but nothing blatent). The vast majority of times people who are modded down have it done so because they are deliberatly trolling, wrong, offtopic, or the moderator didn't get it (we'll both be modded down, I'll be offtopic and rightly so). The hole in the system is with over/underrated where moderators aren't held accountable but I havn't seen many examples of that. For the most part any relevant, polite, accurate, well thought out argument will be modded up regardless of the views.

Throughout all of this, the Editors have claimed a false level of detachment from the acts of moderation.

From the faq
Do editors moderate?
The Slashdot Editors have unlimited mod points, and we have no problem using them. These moderations represent approximately 8% of all moderation, and according to Meta Moderation, the fairness of these comments is statistically indistinguishable from the moderation of non admin users (92-93% of moderations are ruled 'Fair'). You can argue that this is somehow inherently unfair, but one of the goals of Slashdot is to produce readable content for a variety of readers with a variety of reading habits, and this process improves discussions for the vast majority of Slashdot Readers, so it will stay this way.

continuing...
Throughout the previous 25 years, Microsoft has grown from strength to strength, again possessing shrewd business acumen as well as providing products that people want. This makes them the number one target for the OSS movement.

Umm... I believe it is more the highly monopolistic and unfair buisness practices and the fear over what they will do with their immense amount of power that makes them enemy #1.

Ask yourself why Slashdot flat-out justified the murder of innocents at Columbine.

Justified or looked at the issue from both sides and tried to find the reasons so they could be avoided in the future. Frankly your NAZI analogy makes no sense it's a comparison based on massive stretches of facts reaching invalid conclusions. This is simply an online community presenting a certain set of viewpoints pertaining to certain issues and if I didn't have work to do I would try and show that furthur.

When I first penned this rambling diatribe, the additional fact that Editors have secret moderation powers hadn't been released. Now they admit to pulling strings amd killing any thought or idea they disagree with.

Although you were off-topic (where can you post such important stuff and be on-topic) I completely agree with you. Although I play chaotic-neutral in general, that is merely an experiment... And I know exactly how to meta-moderate.
I am a Microsoft user and proud, well, at least not ashamed, to admit it. But there are some things we can agree on. Idiots do us no favours. I welcome, and thrive on, the cut and thrust of intellectual debate. Long live debate! And long may trolls starve, living only on the skinny bones of the lesser creatures.

Connotative Use/Meaning

420 is a phreak s (and not just a hippie s) favorite number for a
variety of reasons, or maybe for no reason at all, but colloquially
the number says pot -- let s smoke pot, or someone s smoking
pot, or gee, i really like pot, or time to smoke pot, either by
time (4:20 a.m. or p.m.), date (April 20th), or otherwise (e.g. State
Route 420). April 20th at 4:20 is marked by annual events in
Mount Tamalpais, CA (an informal gathering); Marin Conty, CA
(the 420 Hemp Fest); Ann Arbor, MI (the Hash Bash); and
Washington, D.C. (buildup towards the July 4th Smoke-In).

Original Source(s)

Conventional wisdom: The most common tale is that 420 is the
police radio code or criminal code (and therefore the police call)
in certain part(s) of California (e.g. in Los Angeles or San
Francisco) for having spotted someone consuming cannabis
publicly, i.e. pot smoking in progress; that local cannabis users
picked up on the code and began celebrating the number temporally
(esp. 4:20 a.m., 4:20 p.m., and April 20); that the number became
nationally popularized in the late 1980s and, more ferverently, in
the early- to mid-1990s; and is colloquially applied to a variety of
relaxed and/or inspired contexts, including not only pot
consumption but also a good time more generally (in contrast to
the drug war surrounding).

Conventions are legends: 420 is not police radio code for
anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes (including those of
the City of San Francisco, the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles
County, the State of California, and the federal penal code) suggest
that the origin is neither Californian nor federal (the two best
guesses). For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a
misdemeanor the hindrance of use (obstructing entry) of public
lands, and California Family Code 420 defines what constitutes a
wedding ceremony (Marco). One state does come close: The
Illinois Department of Revenue classifies the Alcoholic Liquor Act
under Part 420, and the Cannabis and Controlled Substances Tax
Act are next, under Part 428. (RB 5/19/99)

True story?: According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times,
the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971,
among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who
called themselves the Waldos. The term 420 was shorthand for the
time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis
Pasteur, to smoke pot. ``Waldo Steve, a member of the group who
now owns a business in San Francisco, says the Waldos would
salute each other in the school hallway and say ``420 Louis! The
term was one of many invented by the group, but it was the one
that caught on. ``It was just a joke, but it came to mean all kinds of
things, like `Do you have any? or `Do I look stoned? he said.
``Parents and teachers wouldn t know what we were talking about.
The term took root, and flourished, and spread beyond San Rafael
with the assistance of the Grateful Dead and their dedicated cohort
of pot-smoking fans. The Waldos decided to assert their claim to
the history of the term after decades of watching it spread, mutate
and be appropriated by commercial interests. The Waldos contacted
Hager, and presented him with evidence of 420 s history, primarily
a collection of postmarked letters from the early 70s with lots of
mention of 420. They also started a Web site, waldo420.com. ``We
have proof, we were the first, Waldo Steve said. ``I mean, it s not
like we wrote a book or invented anything. We just came up with a
phrase. But it s kind of an honor that this emanated from San
Rafael. Maria Alicia Gaura for the San Francisco Chronicle,
4/20/00 p. A19; and thanks to Noah Cole for the submission

Alternate explanations

There are a variety of other explanations, all much more interesting
than police code, and many plausible. Some are more likely uses
of the 420/hemp connection rather than sources of it, such as the
score for the football game in Fast Times at Ridgement High,
42-0.

Known Myths: It isn t police code (see above). There are 315
chemicals in marijuana, not 420. And although tea time in
Amsterdam is rumored to be 4:20, it is actually 5:30 (Gerhard
den Hollander).
Sixties Songs: For instance, Bob Dylan s famous Rainy Day
Women #12 and 35 is a possible reference, or source --
12x35=420. And Stephen Stills wrote (and Crosby Stills Nash
& Young performed) a song 4+20 (first recorded 7/16/69,
released on Deja Vu 3/11/70) about an 84-year-old
poverty-stricken man who started and finished with nothing.
(Thanks to Sherry Keel 12/6/98.) Dylan aslo mentions 4 and
20 windows in The Balland of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest
(on John Wesley Harding).
Older Verse: But 420 in poetry is older than that - Greg
Keller notes the old nursery rhyme line, four and twenty
black birds baked in a pie. Revelation 5:14 (in the King
James Version of the Christian Bible) reads, And the four
beasts said A-Men. And the four and twenty elders fell down
and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. (Travis
Spurley 2/15/99) And in Midnight s_Children, Salman
Rushdie wrote, Inevitably, a number of these children failed
to survive. Malnutrition, disease and the misfortunes of
everyday life had accounted for no less than four hundred and
twenty of them by the time I became conscious of their
existence; although it is possible to hypothesize that these
deaths, too, had their purpose, since 420 has been, since time
immemorial, the number associated with fraud, deception and
trickery. (Comet 2/14/98) Comet s best guess is that this
refers to something in Indian mythology or numerology, since
the book is set in India and frequently involves Indian history,
culture, and religion. Given the high interest in Eastern
religion among the phish/dead community, this seems a likely
origin of 420 s current significance.
Temporal Significance: Hands on analog clock at 4:20 look
like position of doobie dangling from mouth Larry in
Tuscan and Alex Mack 5/19/99). Disruptive students are out
of detention and safetly away from school by 4:20, also
rumored to be the time that you should dose to be peaking
when the Dead went on stage Hart. The Waldos were a
group of teens back in the 70 s that lived in San Rafael, CA.
420 was the way they talked about pot in front of teachers,
non-smoking family members etc. Also it was the time of day
they could just go relax, and get baked. (PhunkCellar)
Jamaicans purportedly worked till 4 then walked home then
lit up. They would talk 420 like our parents talked about after
5. That s when partying began Larry in Tuscan). Albert (not
Abbie) Hofmann supposedly first encountered LSD at 4:20
p.m. on 4/19/1943 (Bart Coleman citing Storming Heaven by
Jay Stevens, recommended by Mickey Hart in Planet Drum).
Surrealist painter Miro was born April 20, 1893. And
www.filmspeed.com says the propoganda film Reefer
Madness has a copyright date of April 20, 1936 (i.e. 4/20).
(Patrick Woolford)
Misc: Could be that it comes from hydroponics, the practice
of cultivating plants in water often used by indoor marijuana
cultivators, since 4 is used for H on a calculator (420/H20).
(Nick Lowe 3/30/00) The number 80 (eight) is quatre vingt
(pronounced cah-truh vahn), meaning four (times} twenty.
Dan Nijjar 1/27/00 (No connection yet between the number
80 and pot. A quarter pound is roughly 120 grams, rounding
quarter-ounces to 7.5.) The titanic was supposed to arrive
4/20/1912. (Thanks to RB.) Perhaps the heavy use of vt420
terminals in the Berkeley area is to blame? (BTW, 420 in
binary code is 110100100.)

Ubiquitous?

Now there s a 420 Pale Ale. One of the late-97/early-98 Got
Milk ads featured a character eating cookies without milk and
then passing a sign that reads Next Rest Area 420 miles (as Ross
Bruning). Reportedly, all of the clocks in the movie Pulp Fiction
are stuck on 4:20. Shirts with the number 420 on the red-and-blue
interstate highway shield (Interstate 420?) have show up on the
sitcom Will and Grace (Paul Risenhoover 5/14/99) and in several
videos. UPS labelling software has a 420 postal code legend for
next-day/2-day deliveries (which is how Phish tickets are sent).
(Jack Lebowitz 10/3/98) MTV s 1997 Viewer s Choice Award (for
the MTV Video Awards) was decided by calls to
1-800-420-4MTV. And by May of 1998, the number was
appearing in so many ads (eg Copenhagen 5/14/98 Rolling Stone
p54, Corvette p55 5/98 Car & Driver) that its presence is
presumed to be intentional. Many songs are around 4 minutes 20
seconds long (since many songs fall between 2:30 and 5:30),
including for example Pink Floyd s A Great Day for Freedom (on
The Division Bell, 1994), the Foo Fighters My Hero, and
Smokin from Boston s first album. There have also been some
420 references on The Simpsons. In the re-run episode aired on
April 20th, 1999 at a special time (probably in honor of those
college students staying in the holiday spirit ;-), Homer mentions to
Flanders that Barney s birthday is April 20th. Also, the jackpot sign
in one part of the casino says $420,000. There are a couple less
concrete ones, but these two have to be legit, especially since they
decided to air THAT particular episode on 4/20/99. (Submitted by
Matt Meehan 4/21/99) And (as of Fall 99) the 60 free minutes that
Working Assets Long Distance offers, at the 7 cents per minute
rate, is $4.20 free. There s even a band named 420, and another
names . In the first fifteen pages of Karel Capek s novel War with
the Newts, a man diving under wonder stayed down for four
minutes and twenty seconds. Grant Garstka 1/6/00 At the
suggested retail price ($3.96) and Michigan (6%) sales tax, a deck
of Uno cards costs $4.20. Nic Boris 4:20 marks the first downbeat
of the drums in Led Zeppelin s epic Stairway to Heaven. (Dan
Harris) The bill authorizing force after the World Trade Center
attacks of 9/11/01 passed 420 to 1, and news reports in following
months noted many times that there are (or were then, anyway) 420
airports in the U.S. Allan Morris And don t forget that Adolf Hitler
was born on April 20, macabely celebrated (or at least
referenced) via the Columbine High School shootings.

Phish-related Occurances

Whatever the origin, the number appears frequently... For the
summer 1997 tour, TicketMaster service charges were $4.20. In
the Fall 1997 Doniac Schvice Dry Goods section, a limited edition
Pollack poster printed on 100% hemp is order number 420P. The
Great Went was 420 miles from Boston (former home of Phish).
The official logo includes 4 gills and 20 bubbles (Gringo
11/12/98). As of 6/15/97, including covers and originals, Phish
had performed a total of 420 songs (thought its 486 by 4/24/98).
(David Steinberg). Lawnboy is 420megs of memory. Patrick
Walker Phish s The Vibration of Life underlies a whirling loop
with Seven Beats per second (which makes 420 beats per minute.)
Trey has used the altered line woke up at 4:20 in Makisupa
Policeman, which also often indirectly celebrates 420ing, e.g. by
mention of goo balls. One of the funniest shirts around takes light
jabs at both the 4:20 phenomenon and the rumored evolution
(collapse?) of the Phish.Net (especially rec.music.phish) from
being Gamehendge to Flamehendge, and beyond. The first day of
the Great Went started at 4:20 (with Makisupa Policeman. (The
second day started late, at 4:37.) Noah Cole The first single from
Slip Stitch and Pass was played on WBCN 10/14/97 at 4:20 pm.
An uproar at 12/31/96 can be heard on tape during the 2001, in
response to an enormous digital clock (which was counting down
to midnight) reaching 11:55:40 and reading -4:20. (Yoda)
During the 9-12-00 2001, Trey hits the first riff right at 4:20 into
the intro jam. (Cal 2/25/01) Some mail order tickets for the 1997
New Year s run were in section 420. The first Mass Pike toll
leaving Oswego was $4.20. (Camille Heath ) And the standard
shipping for The Phish Companion through Amazon was
originally $4.20.

420 Shows: Phish performed on April 20 in 1989, 1990, 1991,
1993, and 1994. The first day of the Great Went started at 4:20,
although that was called a soundcheck by Trey after three songs.
The Jazzfest Harry Hood 4-26-96 started at about 4:20 reported by
Trevor. At Big Cypress, David Bowie was playing at 4:20 a.m.
And the one event during the hiatus (10/8/00 - ?) featuring all
four members - for Jason Colton s wedding - was 12/1/01, 420

barf, RDRAM (1)

Indy1 (99447) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823756)

i just noticed the bottom part, "integrated RDRAM memory controller". RDRAM is WAYYYYY too $$$$ to be used in servers, and the latency on it sucks balls as well. I dont understand why they dont go with dual DDR (ala nforce style or intels p4 chipset thats due out next time some year).

Re:barf, RDRAM (3, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#3823786)

It is an EIGHT channel RDRAM controller though. Compare to the TWO channel RDRAM controller of the i850 for example. That gives the Alpha 4x the memory bandwidth of the i850. RAMBUS and DDR both have their advantages and disadvantages. I doubt that RDRAM would have been used without a good reason - most likely the need for high memory bandwidth. Graham

Not really Re:barf, RDRAM (3, Informative)

ppetrakis (51087) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823807)

Sure RDRAM is 'slow' when used on PC architecture however on an Alpha which has VERY WIDE memory bus it can actually use all that memory bandwidth. The latency doesnt matter anymore. As for cost. If you are buying one of these you probably had to get the job done 'yesterday' :-)

"RDRAM is WAYYYYY too $$$$ to be used in servers"
Too expensive for servers? You must be kidding. Ever price an alpha cluster?

I'm no fan of RDRAM though. Not that I necessarily dislike the technology, but the tactics.

Re:barf, RDRAM (5, Informative)

jmv (93421) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823840)

the latency on it sucks balls

It does in a PC, where they only put two 16-bit channels so you need two accesses to each bank to fetch the 64-bit bus-width (it's serialization).

In Alpha, there's no serialization. You've got an eight-channel (16 bit each, unless they use the newer 32-bit wide?) configuration. That means that they are 128 bits wide. In order to get the same performance from DDR, you'd need to have a bus that's 1024-bit wide or something like that, which is not practical...

I don't like RAMBUS at all, but the industry has to come up with something faster because it's clearly the fastest on platforms where it's used correctly (I don't include the current PC in that category).

Re:barf, RDRAM (3, Informative)

LinuxParanoid (64467) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823941)

You must be buying cheap servers. RDRAM is used in more expensive servers, in part due to the high bandwidth it provides (and also, in part due to engineering decisions made years ago.) 8 channels of RDRAM yields 12.8 GB/sec of memory bandwidth which is certainly more than you get with PCs these days, even PC servers. Then again, the 21364 isn't shipping yet. But I don't think Intel plans on shipping that sort of CPU bandwidth by the end of the year.

And back to your point about economics of RDRAM, there is money out there that will pay a premium for performance scalability (at least when combined with reliability). About 11 percent of all servers -- command as much as 60 percent of all server revenue. [eetimes.com]

I just wonder how it'll stack up performance-wise on this chart [theinquirer.net] versus Power4 and Itanium2.

But the main reason I suspect one would buy one of these is because you want binary compatibility with all your old high-performance Alpha code that you invested so many man-years in.

all of you make good points. I didnt stop to consider that a high end alpha solution is massive dollars. Does using multiple channels get around the latency in rdram? One of my friends who is a developer says that applications that do mostly serialized type memory acesses do great with rdram, but unless your app is written to take advantage of rdram, ddr is far better (due to much better latency). I am not a big iron expert, so can anyone comment if your usual type big iron apps depend on latency more vs raw bandwidth? I know with Hard drives, brute STR isnt as godly as random access speeds unless your doing stuff like streaming video.

to see Itanium steamroller a much better architecture.

Alpha is brilliant, too bad it didn't receive the development and marketing dollars it deserved. Compaq should be ashamed.

Thank goodness AMD is here to take up the slack with Hammer! =)

Hammer is not quite something to be happy about. From what I've been told by others x86 is not the best architecture out there, and having a clean break from this to a better architecture would be a good idea. Although, I'm not sure the Itanic is the way to go...

To take up the slack? How could a glorified x86 chip with a broken/inefficient instruction set possibly be better than a chip with a new from-scratch architecture.

How could a glorified x86 chip with a broken/inefficient instruction set possibly be better than a chip with a new from-scratch architecture.

Well you have the x86 with basically all the market forces behind it driving huge R&D budgets...that's how the x86 managed to slam the MIPS, SPARC, POWER, and pretty much all the other RISC chips. It doesn't matter that you are basically sticking solid rockets onto a large not-so-aerodyanic brick. It flys.

That's the past. Now in the present we have the same market forces behind the x86, and a stunningly bizzare new creature called the IA64, which may not be the poster child for "broken/inefficient", but is clearly a great one for "will drive compiler writers over the brink into the spinning abyss of madness". It is definitly stunningly hard to write things for, that's for sure. More so in most cases then figuring what "RISCops" your x86 instructions are broken into, and where they are shoved, how long that takes, and what a better set would be.

Intel will send you the IA64 instruction set manuals for free. Go take a peak...if your mind is strong. Or you don't mind a bit of gibbering.

got Satan? V (-1)

xdfgf (460453) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823763)

There is certainly much evidence that past religions are, every day, lifting
more and more of their ridiculous restrictions. Even so, when an entire religion
is based on abstinence instead of indulgence (as it should be) there is little
left when it has been revised to meet the current needs of man. So, why waste
time "buying oats for a dead horse"?

The watchword of Satanism is INDULGENCE instead of "abstinence" . . . BUT - it
is not "compulsion". ON THE CHOICE OF A HUMAN SACRIFICE THE supposed
purpose in performing the ritual of sacrifice is to throw the energy provided by
the blood of the freshly slaughtered victim into the atmosphere of the magical
working, thereby intensifying the magician's chances of success.

The "white" magician assumes that since blood represents the life force, there
is no better way to appease the gods or demons than to present them with
suitable quantities of it. Combine this rationale with the fact that a dying
creature is expending an overabundance of adrenal and other biochemical
energies, and you have what appears to be an unbeatable combination.

The "white" magician, wary of the consequences involved in the killing of a
human being, naturally utilizes birds, or other "lower" creatures in his
ceremonies. It seems these sanctimonious wretches feel no guilt in the taking of
a non-human life, as opposed to a human's.

The fact of the matter is that if the "magician" is worthy of his name, he will
be uninhibited enough to release the necessary force from his own body, instead
of from an unwilling and undeserving victim!

Contrary to all established magical theory, the release of this force is NOT
effected in the actual spilling of blood, but in the death throes of the living
creature! This discharge of bioelectrical energy is the very same phenominon
which occurs during any profound heightening of the emotions, such as: sexual
orgasm, blind anger, mortal terror, consuming grief, etc. Of these emotions, the
easiest entered into of one's own violation are sexual orgasm and anger, with
grief running a close third. Remembering that the two most readily available of
these three (sexual orgasm and anger) have been burned into man's unconscios as
"sinful" by religionists, it is small wonder they are shunned by the "white"
magician, who plods along carrying the greatest of all millstones of guilt!

The inhibitive and asinine absurdity in the need to kill an innocent living
creature at the high-point of a ritual, as practiced by erstwhile "wizards", is
obviously their "lesser of the evils" when a discharge of energy is called for.
These poor conscience-stricken fools, who have been calling themselves witches
and warlocks, would sooner chop the head off a goat or chicken in an attempt to
harness its death agony, than have the "blasphemous" bravery to masturbate in
full view of the Jehovah whom they claim to deny! The only way these mystical
cowards can ritualistically release themselves is through the agony of another's
death (actually their own, by proxy) rather than the indulgent force which
produces life! The treaders of the path of white light are truly the cold and
the dead! No wonder these tittering pustules of "mystical wisdom" must stand
within protective circles to bind the "evil" forces in order to keep themselves
"safe" from attack - ONE GOOD ORGASM WOULD PROBABLY KILL THEM!

The use of a human sacrifice in a Satanic ritual does not imply that the
sacrifice is slaughtered "to appease the gods". Symbolically, the victim is
destroyed through the working of a hex or curse, which in turn leads to the
physical, mental or emotional destruction of the "sacrifice" in ways and means
not attributable to the magician.

The only time a Satanist would perform a human sacrifice would be if it were to
serve a two-fold purpose; that being to release the magician's wrath in the
throwing of a curse, and more important, to dispose of a totally obnoxious and
deserving individual.

Under NO circumstances would a Satanist sacrifice any animal or baby! For
centuries, propagandists of the right-hand path have been prattling over the
supposed sacrifices of small children and voluptuous maidens at the hands of
diabolists. It would be thought that anyone reading or hearing of these heinous
accounts would immediately question their authenticity, taking into
consideration the biased sources of the stories. On the contrary, as with all
"holy" lies which are accepted without reservation, this assumed modus operandi
of the Satanists persists to this day!

There are sound and logical reasons why the Satanists could not perform such
sacrifices. Man, the animal, is the godhead to the Satanist. The purest form of
carnal existence reposes in the bodies of animals and human children who have
not grown old enough to deny themselves their natural desires. They can perceive
things that the average adult human can never hope to. Therefore, the Satanist
holds these beings in a sacred regard, knowing he can learn much from these
natural magicians of the world.

The Satanist is aware of the universal custom of the treader of the path of
Agarthi; the killing of the god. Inasmuch as gods are always created in man's
own image - and the average man hates what he sees in himself - the inevitable
must occur: the sacrifice of the god who represents himself. The Satanist does
not hate himself, nor the gods he might choose, and has no desire to destroy
himself or anything for which he stands! It is for this reason he could never
willfully harm an animal or child.

The question arises, "Who, then, would be considered a fit and proper human
sacrifice, and how is one qualified to pass judgment on such a person?" The
answer is brutally simple. Anyone who has unjustly wronged you - one who has
"gone out of his way" to hurt you - to deliberately cause trouble and hardship
for you or those dear to you. In short, a person asking to be cursed by their
very actions.

When a person, by his reprehensible behavior, practically cries out to be
destroyed, it is truly your moral obligation to indulge them their wish. The
person who takes every opportunity to "pick on" others is often mistakenly
called "sadistic". In reality, this person is a misdirected masochist who is
working towards his own destruction. The reason a person viciously strikes out
against you is because they are afraid of you or what you represent, or are
resentful of your happiness. They are weak, insecure, and on extremely shaky
ground when you throw your curse, and they make ideal human sacrifices.

It is sometimes easy to overlook the actual wrongdoing of the victim of your
curse, when one considers how "unhappy" a person he really is. It is not so
easy, though, to retrace the damaging footsteps of your antagonist and make
right those practical situations he or she has made wrong.

The "ideal sacrifice" may be emotionally insecure, but nonetheless can, in the
machinations of his insecurity, cause severe damage to your tranquility or sound
reputation. "Mental illness", "nervous breakdown", "maladjustment", "anxiety
neuroses", "broken homes", "sibling rivalry", etc., etc., ad infinitum have too
long been convenient excuses for vicious and irresponsible actions. Anyone who
says "we must try to understand" those who make life miserable for those
undeserving of misery is aiding and abetting a social cancer! The apologists for
these rabid humans deserve any clobberings they get at the hands of their
charges!

Mad dogs are destroyed, and they need help far more than the human who
conveniently made froths at the mouth when irrational behavior is in order! It
is easy to say, "So what! - these people are insecure, so they can't hurt me."
But the fact remains - given the opportunity they would destroy you!

Therefore, you have every right to (symbolically) destroy them, and if your
curse provokes their actual annihilation, rejoice that you have been
instrumental in ridding the world of a pest! If your success or happiness
disturbs a person - you owe him nothing! He is made to be trampled under foot!
IF PEOPLE HAD TO TAKE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR OWN ACTIONS, THEY WOULD THINK
TWICE! LIFE AFTER DEATH THROUGH FULFILLMENT OF THE EGO MAN is aware that
he will die, someday. Other animals, when nearing death, know they are about to
die; but it is not until death is certain that the animal senses his coming
departure from this world. And even then he does not know exactly what is
entailed in dying. It is often pointed out that animals accept death gracefully,
without fear or resistance. This is a beautiful concept, but one that only holds
true in cases where death for the animal is unavoidable.

When an animal is sick or injured he will fight for his life with every ounce of
strength he has left. It is this unshakable will to live that, if man were not
so "highly evolved", would also give him the fighting spirit he needs to stay
alive.

It is a well known fact that many people die simply because they give up and
just don't care anymore. This is understandable if the person is very ill, with
no apparent chance for recovery. But this often is not the case. Man has become
lazy. He has learned to take the easy way out. Even suicide has become less
repugnant to many people than any number of other sins. Religion is totally to
blame for this.

Death, in most religions, is touted as a great spiritual awakening - one which
is prepared for throughout life. This concept is very appealing to one who has
not had a satisfactory life; but to those who have experienced all the joys life
has to offer, there is a great dread attached to dying. This is as it should be.
It is this lust for life which will allow the vital person to live on after the
inevitable death of his fleshly shell.

History shows that men who have given their own lives in pursuit of an ideal
have been deified for their martyrdom. Religionists and political leaders have
been very crafty in laying their plans. By holding the martyr up as a shining
example to his fellow men, they eliminate the common sense reaction that willful
self-destruction goes against all animal logic. To the Satanist, martyrdom and
non-personalized heroism is to be associated not with integrity, but with
stupidity. This, of course, does not apply to the situations which involve the
safety of a loved one. But to give one's own life for something as impersonal as
a political or religious issue is the ultimate in masochism.

Life is the one great indulgence; death the one great abstinence. To a person
who is satisfied with his earthly existence, life is like a party; and no one
likes to leave a good party. By the same token, if a person is enjoying himself
here on earth he will not so readily give up this life for the promise of an
afterlife about which he knows nothing.

The Eastern mystical beliefs teach humans to discipline themselves against any
conscious will for success so they might dessolve themselves into "Universal
Cosmic Awareness" - anything to avoid good healthy self-satisfaction or honest
pride in earthly accomplishments!

It is interesting to note that the areas in which this type of belief flourishes
are those where material gains are not easily obtainable. For this reason the
predominant religious belief must be one which commends its followers for their
rejection of material things and their avoidance of the use of labels which
attaches a certain amount of importance to material gains. In this way the
people can be pacified into accepting their lot, no matter how small it may be.

Satanism uses many labels. If it were not for names, very few of us would
understand anything in life, much less attach any significance to it; - and
significance compels recognition, which is something everyone wants, especially
the Eastern mystic who tries to prove to everyone he can meditate longer or
stand more deprivation and pain than the next fellow.

The Eastern philosophies preach the dissolution of man's ego before he can
produce sins. It is unfathomable to the Satanist to conceive of an ego which
would willfully choose denial of itself.

In countries where this is used as a sop for the willingly impoverished, it is
understandable that a philosophy which teaches the denial of the ego would serve
a useful purpose - at least for those in power, to whom it would be detrimental
if their people were discontented. But for anyone who has every opportunity for
material gain, to choose this form of religious thought seems foolish, indeed!

The Eastern mystic believes strongly in reincarnation. To a person who has
virtually nothing in this life, the possibility that he may have been a king in
a past life or may be one in the next life is very attractive, and does much to
appease his need for self-respect. If there is nothing in which they can take
pride in this life, they can console themselves by thinking, "there are always
future lives." It never occurs to the believer in reincarnation that if his
father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, etc. had developed "good karmas", by
their adherence to the same beliefs and ethics as his present ones - then why is
he now living in privation, rather than like a maharajah?

Belief in reincarnation provides a beautiful fantasy world in which a person can
find the proper avenue of ego-expression, but at the same time claim to have
dissolved his ego. This is emphasized by the roles people choose for themselves
in their past or future lives.

Believers in reincarnation do not always choose an honorable character. If the
person is of a highly respectable and conservative nature, he will often choose
a colorful rogue or gangster, thereby fulfilling his alter-ego. Or, a woman who
has much social status may pick a harlot or famous courtesan for the
characterization of herself in a past life.

If people were able to divorce themselves from the stigma attached to personal
ego-fulfillment, they would not need to play self-deceitful games such as belief
in reincarnation as a means of satisfying their natural need for
ego-fulfillment.

The Satanist believes in complete gratification of his ego. Satanism, in fact,
is the only religion which advocates the intensification or encouragement of the
ego. Only if a person's own ego is sufficiently fulfilled, can he afford to be
kind and complimentary to others, without robbing himself of his self-respect.
We generally think of a braggart as a person with a large ego; in reality, his
bragging results from a need to satisfy his impoverished ego.

Religionists have kept their followers in line by suppressing their egos. By
making their followers feel inferior, the awesomeness of their god is insured.
Satanism encourages its members to develop a good strong ego because it gives
them the self-respect necessary for a vital existence in this life.

If a person has been vital throughout his life and has fought to the end for his
earthly existence, it is this ego which will refuse to die, even after the
expiration of the flesh which housed it. Young children are to be admired for
their driving enthusiasm for life. This is exemplified by the small child who
refuses to go to bed when there is something exciting going on, and when once
put to bed, will sneak down the stairs to peek through the curtain and watch. It
is this child-like vitality that will allow the Satanist to peek through the
curtain of darkness and death and remain earthbound.

Self-sacrifice is not encouraged by the Satanic religion. Therefore, unless
death comes as an indulgence because of extreme circumstances which make the
termination of life a welcome relief from the unendurable earthyl existence,
suicide is frowned upon by the Satanic religion.

Religious martyrs have taken their own lives, not because life was intolerable
for them, but to use their supreme sacrifice as a tool to further the religious
belief. We must assume, then, that suicide, if done for the sake of the church,
is condoned and even encouraged - even though their scriptures label it a sin -
because religious martyrs of the past have always been deified.

It is rather curious that the only time suicide is considered sinful by other
religions is when it comes as an indulgence. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS THE
highest of all holidays in the Satanic religion is the date of one's own birth.
This is in direct contradiction to the holy of holy days of other religions,
which deify a particular god who has been created in an anthropomorphic form of
their own image, thereby showing that the ego is not really buried.

The Satanist feels: "Why not really be honest and if you are going to create a
god in your image, why not create that god as yourself." Every man is a god if
he chooses to recognize himself as one. So, the Satanist celebrates his own
birthday as the most important holiday of the year. After all, aren't you
happier about the fact that you were born than you are about the birth of
someone you have never even met? Or for that matter, aside from religious
holidays, why pay higher tribute to the birthday of a president or to a date in
history than we do to the day we were brought into this greatest of all worlds?

Despite the fact that some of us may not have been wanted, or at least were not
particularly planned, we're glad, even if no one else is, that we're here! You
should give yourself a pat on the back, buy yourself whatever you want, treat
yourself like the king (or god) that you are, and generally celebrate your
birthday with as much pomp and ceremony as possible.

After one's own birthday, the two major Satanic holidays are Walpurgisnacht and
Halloween (or All Hallows' Eve).

St. Walpurgis - or Walpurga, or Walburga, depending upon the time and area in
which one is referring to her - was born in Sussex about the end of the Seventh
or the beginning of the Eighth Century, and was educated at Winburn, Dorset,
where after taking the veil, she remained for twenty-five years. She then, at
the instance of her uncle, St. Boniface, and her brother, St. Wilibald, set out
along with some other nuns to found religious houses in Germany. Her first
settlement was at Bischofsheim in the diocese of Mainz, and two years later (754
A.D.) she became abbess of the Benedictine nunnery at Heidenheim, within her
brother Wilibald's diocese of Eichstadt in Bavaria, where another brother,
Winebald, had at the same time also been made head of a monastery. On the death
of Winebald in 760 she succeeded him in his charge, retaining the
superintendence of both houses until her death on February 25, 779. Her relics
were translated to Eichstadt, where she was laid in a hollow rock, from which
exuded a kind of bituminous oil, afterwards known as Walpurgis oil, regarded as
having miraculous efficacy against disease. The cave became a place of
pilgrimage, and a great church was built over the spot. She is commemorated at
various times, but principally on May 1st, her day taking the place of an
earlier Pagan festival. Amazingly enough, all of this rigmarole was found
necessary simply to condone the continuance of the most important Pagan festival
of the year - the grand climax of the spring equinox!

The Eve of May has been memorialized as the night that all of the demons,
specters, afreets, and banshees would come forth and hold their wild revels,
symbolizing the fruition of the spring equinox.

Halloween - All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Day - falls on October 31st or
November 1st. Originally, All Hallows' Eve was one of the great fire festivals
of Britain at the time of the Druids. In Scotland it was associated with the
time when the spirits of the dead, the demons, witches, and sorcerers were
unusually active and propitious. Paradoxically, All Hallows' Eve was also the
night when young people performed magical rituals to determine their future
marriage partners. The youth of the villages carried on with much merry-making
and sensual revelry, but the older people took great care to safeguard their
homes from the evil spirits, witches, and demons who had exceptional power that
night.

The solstices and equinoxes are also celebrated as holidays, as they herald the
first day of the seasons. The difference between a solstice and an equinox is a
semantic one defining the relationship between the sun, moon, and the fixed
stars. The solstice applies to summer and winter; the equinox refers to autumn
and spring. The summer solstice is in June, and the winter solstice is in
December. The autumn equinox is in September, and the spring equinox is in
March. Both the equinoxes and the solstices vary a day or two from year to year,
depending on the lunar cycle at the time, but usually fall on the 21st or 22nd
of the month. Five to six weeks after these days the legendary Satanic revels
are celebrated.

THE BLACK MASS NO other single device has been associated with Satanism as
much as the black mass. To say that the most blasphemous of all religious
ceremonies is nothing more than a literary invention is certainly a statement
which needs qualifying - but nothing could be truer.

The popular concept of the black mass is thus: a defrocked priest stands before
an altar consisting of a nude woman, her legs spread-eagled and vagina thrust
open, each of her outstretched fists grasping a black candle made from the fat
of unbaptized babies, and a chalice containing the urine of a prostitute (or
blood) reposing on her belly. An inverted cross hangs above the altar, and
triangular hosts of ergot-laden bread or black-stained turnip are methodically
blessed as the priest dutifully slips them in and out of the altar-lady's labia.
Then, we are told, an invocation to Satan and various demons is followed by an
array of prayers and psalms chanted backwards or interspersed with obscenities .
. . all performed within the confines of a "protective" pentagram drawn on the
floow. If the Devil appears he is invariably in the form of a rather eager man
wearing the head of a black goat upon his shoulders. Then follows a potpouri of
flagellation, prayer-book burning, cunnilingus, fellatio, and general
hindquarters kissing - all done to a background of ribald recitations from the
Holy Bible, and audible expectorations on the cross! If a baby can be
slaughtered during the ritual, so much the better; for as everyone knows, this
is the favorite sport of the Satanist!

If this sounds repugnant, then the success of the reports of the black mass, in
keeping the devout in church, is easy to understand. No "decent" person could
fail to side with the inquisitors when told of these blasphemies. The
propagandists of the church did their job well, informing the public at one time
or another of the heresies and heinous acts of the Pagans, Cathars, Bogomils,
Templars and others who, because of their dualistic philosophies and sometimes
Satanic logic, had to be eradicated.

The stories of unbaptized babies being stolen by Satanists for use in the mass
were not only effective propoganda measures, but also provided a constant source
of revenue for the Church, in the form of baptism fees. No Christian mother
would, upon hearing of these diabolical kidnappings, refrain from getting her
child properly baptized, post haste.

Another facet of man's nature was apparent in the fact that the writer or artist
with lewd thoughts could exercise his most obscene predilections in the
portrayal of the activities of heretics. The censor who views all pornography so
that he will know what to warn others of is the modern equivalent of the
medieval chronicler of the obscene deeds of the Satanists (and, of course, their
modern journalistic counterparts). It is believed that the most complete library
of pornography in the world is owned by the Vatican!

The kissing of the Devil's behind during the traditional black mass is easily
recognized as the forerunner of the modern term used to describe one who will,
through appealing to another's ego, gain materially from him. As all Satanic
ceremonies were performed toward very real or material goals, the oscularum
infame (or kiss of shame) was considered a symbolic requisite towards earthly,
rather than spiritual, success.

The usual assumption is that the Satanic ceremony or service is always called a
black mass. A black mass is not the magical ceremony practiced by Satanists. The
Satanist would only employ the use of a black mass as a form of psychodrama.
Furthermore, a black mass does not necessarily imply that the performers of such
are Satanists. A black mass is essentially a parody of the religious service of
the Roman Catholic Church, but can be loosely applied to a satire on any
religious ceremony.

To the Satanist, the black mass, in its blaspheming of orthodox rites, is
nothing more than a redundancy. The services of all established religions are
actually parodies of old rituals performed by the worshippers of the earth and
the flesh. In attempts to de-sexualize and de-humanize the Pagan beliefs, later
men of spiritual faith whitewashed the honest meanings behind the rituals into
the bland euphemisms now considered to be the "true mass". Even if the Satanist
were to spend each night performing a black mass, he would no more be performing
a travesty than the devout churchgoer who unwittingly attends his own "black
mass" - his spoof on the honest and emotionally-sound rites of Pagan antiquity.

Any ceremony considered a black mass must effectively shock and outrage, as this
seems to be the measure of its success. In the Middle Ages, blaspheming the holy
church was shocking. Now, however, the Church does not present the awesome image
it did during the inquisition. The traditional black mass is no longer the
outrageous spectacle to the dilettante or renegade priest that it once was. If
the Satanist wishes to create a ritual to blaspheme an accepted institution, for
the purpose of psychodrama, he is careful to choose one that is not in vogue to
parody. Thus, he is truly stepping on a sacred cow.

A black mass, today, would consist of the blaspheming of such "sacred" topics as
Eastern mysticism, psychiatry, the psychedelic movement, ultra-liberalism, etc.
Patriotism would be championed, drugs and their gurus would be defiled,
acultural militants would be deified, and the decadence of ecclesiastical
theologies might even be given a Satanic boost.

The Satanic magus has always been the catalyst for the dichotomy necessary in
molding popular beliefs, and in this case a ceremony in the nature of a black
mass may serve a far-reaching magical purpose.

In the year 1666, some rather interesting events occurred in France. With the
death of François Mansart, the architect of the trapezoid, whose geometrics were
to become the prototype of the haunted house, the Palace of Versailles was being
constructed, in accordance with his plans. The last of the glamorous priestesses
of Satan, Jeanne-Marie Bouvier (Madame Guyon) was to be overshadowed by a shrewd
opportunist and callous business-woman named Catharine Deshayes, otherwise known
as LaVoisin. Here was an erstwhile beautician who, while dabbling in abortions
and purveying the most efficient poisons to ladies desirous of eliminating
unwanted husbands or lovers, found in the lurid accounts of the "messes noir" a
proverbial brainstorm.

It is safe to say that 1666 was the year of the first "commercial" black mass!
In the region south of St. Denis, which is now called LaGarenne, a great walled
house was purchased by LaVoisin and fitted with dispensaries, cells,
laboratories, and . . . a chapel. Soon it became de rigueur for royalty and
lesser dillettantes to attend and participate in the very type of service
mentioned earlier in this chapter. The organized fraud perpetrated in these
ceremonies has become indelibly marked in history as the "true black mass".

When LaVoisin was arrested on March 13, 1679 (in the Church of Our Blessed Lady
of Good Tidings, incidentally), the die had already been cast. The degraded
activities of LaVoisin had stifled the majesty of Satanism for many years to
come.

The Satanism-for-fun-and-games fad next appeared in England in the middle 18th
Century in the form of Sir Francis Dashwood's Order of the Medmanham Fanciscans,
popularly called The Hell-Fire Club. While eliminating the blood, gore, and
baby-fat candles of the previous century's masses, Sir Francis managed to
conduct rituals replete with good dirty fun, and certainly provided a colorful
and harmless form of psychodrama for many of the leading lights of the period.
An interesting sideline of Sir Francis, which lends a clue to the climate of the
Hell-Fire Club, was a group called the Dilettanti Club, of which he was the
founder.

I used to use Alpha's but left the platform 3 years ago because of lack of progress in the development of the Alpha. Especially now Compaq is dead too, the Alpha is a sitting duck. HP already has PA-Risc and and a very good relationship with Intel and their Itanium chip. Too bad!

Don't forget that HP killed PA-RISC when they went to do Itanium. The Alpha is very cool. It really doesn't need to be killed off, and HP saw this. Besides, Itanium is lame, it has bad press behind it, and is is also a sitting duck. So, the best to the Alpha, since it seems that HP may want to get off the Intel Bandwagon.

HP Killed PA-RISC? It ain't dead yet. HP recently released specs for the PA-8800 [theregister.co.uk] and its slated to beat McKinley into the weeds...their own Itanium processor. The roadmap includes an 8900 processor too. As for HP being on the Itanium 'bandwagon', Itanium belongs more to HP from a technology standpoint than it does to Intel from what I understand. I can only imagine that HP decided to let Intel take most of the credit for marketing reasons.

Viva la PA-RISC!

Yes, the Alphas have lost their main advantage, a high clock speed. Unless the architecture has fundamentally changed, the Alpha can't hope to compete at 1.3-1.7 Ghz.

The alpha still has an advantage over competing RISC processors (PA-RISC, Sparc, MIPS etc) in the clock rate department, and when compared to x86.. the alpha always trashed x86 chips at half the clock rate.

Should still run NT. At work we have a alpha box which our IT department is running NT on - Too many dumb MCSE's to run a *NIX. Remember NT is just VMS plus the Windoze GUI so it should be at home on an old DEC box.

Rumour has it that M$ ported NT to alpha to head off DEC from complaining about it ripping off VMS for NT.

Alphas were running at 500 megahertz at the time the P60,90 were out.

I remember becayse I almost bought one with the special version of NT for the Alpha. They only cost a small amount more and ran like scalded dogs.

The only problem was that there was very little peripheral support and huge driver issues. But most NT stuff ran on them and ran real fast.

AMD is the bastard child of the Alpha.

BlueFall (141123) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823940)

This is kinda weird. Certainly, no new customers (usually corporate/research, i.e. not hackers) would buy a chip that will be discontinued and it looks like HP itself acknowledges that:

AlphaServer systems will be focused on the Alpha installed base. - from the press release sited above.

But this also means that of the existing customers, probably only those who can't find another alternative soon will buy the new Alpha. Seems like kind of a harsh thing to do the Alpha. If they (Compaq) released this chip then said that they were stopping the line, that would be one thing, but in this case, they're stopping the line before releasing the chip! This is certainly a bizarre move.

Re:No relevance since HP admitted it will kill it (4, Informative)

rodgerd (402) | more than 11 years ago | (#3824171)

Digital and Compaq did a bunch of deals with customers, especially in the supercomputer space, that were predicated on the appearance of this iteration of the Alpha architecture - they'd be in breach to the tune of hundreds of millions, perhaps even billions, if they hadn't pushed this out the door. It's not about whether new customers pick it up, it's about not being sued by old customers.

Furthermore, they've got customers on Tru64 and VMS who have nowhere to move at the moment, but may need more grunt; they'll buy upgrades until they've ported VMS to Itanic and the Tru64 customers have migrated to HP-UX (or give up on the Digital->Compaq->HP fiasco in disgust and move to AIX or Solaris).

Bear in mind that until fairly recently Digital/Compaq were selling new VAX systems to customers who had VAX/VMS setups that worked just fine and no particular desire to upgrade.

alphas and optimisation (5, Interesting)

Zurk (37028) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823850)

just a short comment on how good the alpha high performance math libraries really are (and the alpha engineers -- may alpha rest in peace).
I was writing code for a simple matrix transform using the algorithm as follows :
for (a=0;a100;a++){for(b=0;b100;b++){
txarray[a][b]=o ldarray[b][a];}}
using the alpha libraries to do the transform instead rated me a 10x boost in speed.
this was weird as i didnt see how the above algorithm could be optimized...tearing apart the assembly i saw :
for (a1=0;a1100;a1=a1+10){for b1..{for(a=0;a10;a++){for(b...

evidently they had optimised it so that reads and writes would occur from closely spaced regions of memory and less time would be spent writing.
result ? a 10x boost on a simple algorithm and a neat hack at the same time.
just an example of how awesome the engineering of the alpha wa

This sounds to me like a standard compilers loop unrolling optimization. Almost all modern processors run this kind of code faster. Sounds like you had a cool compiler, though the alpha itself is cool for other reasons.

tiling, not loop unrolling (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#3823997)

This is not loop unrolling, it's a technique called tiling. The idea is that accesses to your rectangular array are performed in small square sections. This optimizes cache usage during the transform, where sequential access in 1 of the 2 dimensions would otherwise be cache-unfriendly.

nice 64bit (2)

johnjones (14274) | more than 11 years ago | (#3823861)

I would like to see one of these give a specFp result

I bet that it could cane IA64 in the specInt but the real test would be floating point and to do IEEE754 properly you need 64 bit otherwise you end up emulating it

now we have of the true 64 bit microproessor's

Sun Microsystems - Processors [sun.com] which are a Sparc [sparc.org]

PA-risc which is MIPS like

and MIPS64 [mips.com] which I like alot

of the ports linux to 64bit for linux HPPA [debian.org] and the oldie but goodie linux Alpha [debian.org] and linux sprac64 [debian.org] of course not forgeting linux for IA64 [debian.org] but unfortunately the linux for MIPS [debian.org] is not 64bit so if ever their was a challenge as linux is mostly 64bit clean its to do a MIPS64 port

oh and intel wont like to say linux for hammer [x86-64.org] which is not real 64bit just has some 64bit registers tacked on (but hey you can do fp right ;-)

Re:nice 64bit (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#3824011)

Wait till you see what IA64-2 (Itanium 2) can do for FPU ops its just plain frightening. I'm talking 1.3K+ specfpu2000 score. From what a rep from a major OEM mentioned to me, IA64-3 (Madison) should double that.

The really interesting thing is the parallels between IA64 and Alpha, that they both sucked hard in thier early varients. It is a little known fact that Alpha 21064 cost more than all other 64bit CPU's at the time and performed far worse.

Oh I should finish off by mentioning that the current IA64 tools for linux suck donkey balls in the performance stakes hopefully this is one area where serious optimisation will be made.

I bet that it could cane IA64 in the specInt but the real test would be floating point and to do IEEE754 properly you need 64 bit otherwise you end up emulating it

x86 processors have had 64-bit floating point registers (actually 80-bit) for as long as they have done native floating point. x86 does not have 64-bit integer registers; this has nothing to do with floating point.

The reason x86 has traditionally sucked at floating point is because the x87 floating point ISA only allows for a stack of 8 fp registers, instead of a flat set of 32 registers like most RISC architectures. This has been worked around to some degree in current x86 processors through the use of a flat virtual register set and good compilers, although there is only so much a compiler can do when it is limited to 8 target registers. Nowadays the continued leadership in SPECfp by 64-bit RISC chips is mostly due to higher memory bandwidth and particularly large L2/L3 caches which help a great deal with certain SPECfp subtests.

While not quite as high as its world-beating SPECint scores, the P4's SPECfp scores are still damn good, and would be even better if Intel would officially support PC1066 RDRAM (the current scores on spec.org are PC800 only). Put another way, they will be even better when Intel releases their dual-channel DDR chipset in a few months.

That said, EV7 will clearly have the SPECfp score to beat for quite some time. (Probably SPECint as well.) And Itanium2's SPECfp scores are reported to vault it well ahead of the also impressive Power4. But, again, this is all to do with higher DRAM bandwidth and larger caches, not with any inherent limitations of x86 for performing double-precision fp.

egoots (557276) | more than 11 years ago | (#3824319)

It's not the hardware that is holding back IEEE754 properly, but rather the compilers

According to W. Kahan (one of the fathers of IEEE754) (see this link to PDF article [berkeley.edu] )

"The widest precision thatâ(TM)s not too slow on odayâ(TM)s most nearly ubiquitous âoeWintelâ computers is not double (8 bytes wide, 53 sig. bits) but IEEE 754 double extended or long double (Â10 bytes wide, 64 sig. bits). This is the format in which all local scalar variables should be declared, in which all anonymous variables should be evaluated by default. C99 would permit this (not require it, alas), but â¦

Microsoftâ(TM)s compilers for Windows NT, 2000, ⦠disable that format.

Java disallows it.

Most ANSI C, C++ and Fortran compilers spurn it.

( Appleâ(TM)s SANE got it right for 680x0-based Macs, but lost it upon switching to Power-Macs.)"

Only 'real' techies seem to have any time for Alpha. A company I work at has just thrown some out which ran a development SAP system only 18 months ago. Now it's been recycled by one of my collegues and runs RedHat.

Works as a nice door stop too! ;)

Not a door stop. A heater. I literally turned off the heat in my room after I bought an Alpha (dual 21164s) this winter. Of course when summer came around, I had to run my air conditioner all the time, and it was getting out of hand (70 year old wiring, 20 amp circut breaker that was always tripping). So I had to get it co-located a in real data center. It is happy there now.

Anyway, I have always loved the Alpha and wanted one since I was a boy. But after having one, and finding how poorly they are supported these days, I can't wait to get my dual Opteron system.

I hope there will be a Samsung/generic offering, and that mainboards, etc will be available for hobbyists, open source developers and researchers.

Mostly because I have sworn to never buy anything ever again from Compaq/HP because of some screw ups I have experienced with ordering Alpha products from Compaq, that 1 1/2 years later, they cannot resolve. I have finally taken the matter to my bank card company, and the Better Business Bureau. Their customer service, fulfillment, and transaction/order tracking suck, but they are good at taking your money. So no Samsung, no more alpha for me, thanks.

Also, because I am cheap. But I like the Alpha Processor, and OpenVMS had a pretty sophisticated design for its time.

I'm not irked. Merely yet still in the mourning stages.
