Batman wears a leather bondage suit and spends his whole day in a dark cave chasing around his thong-sporting "ward" Robin.

Superman, on the other hand, lost his superpowers when he slept with Lois [Superman II] (who is hardly a prize). So he has to be gay to maintain his man-of-steel-ness. Why else would General Zod want to have Superman "kneel before him"?

Besides, everybody knows that Bruce and Clark are gay names.

The idea of a new superman movie has been flying around hollywood for about 2 years now..I even heard rumors of Nicholas Cage playing the role; the idea was set after the onset of all these comic book-turned movies became hits. Its gonna be weird seeing a duel between superheros

Re:this is the second time around... (2)

Ralph Wiggam (22354) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859466)

That was called Superman Lives and was supposed to be the movie that followed his death in the comic book. There isn't much of anything on IMDB, but this is what I remember about the project. Nick Cage was signed up to be the new supe. Kevin Smith was paid $300k to write a script, which he cranked out in three weeks and had Superman fighting Braniac (Smith has been a comic book geek for a lot longer than a movie geek). Tim Burton signed up to direct, but on the condition that they throw away Kevin Smith's script. After that, the project completely disappeared. I'm pretty sure the producer was Joel Silver. I just looked at his IMDB list and it's possible that Superman Lives got canned after Matrix hit big and he realized that he could start his own big franchise instead of rehashing an existing (and basically dead) one.

Someone tell me how Batman could beat Superman? (0)

Wouldn't Superman crush Batman in about a milli-second?

Re:Someone tell me how Batman could beat Superman? (1)

creative_name (459764) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859341)

Batman's only chance would be if he could get his hands on an oversized, rapper-style necklace of the Batman emblem made of Kryptonite. Better get one for Alfred too. Robin can just cower behind Batman and Alfred - saves money that way.

Otherwise, Superman will just crush both of them with his super-human strength and then destroy their remains with his laser vision. Bye bye batty.

Probably asked many times already, but... (2)

goldspider (445116) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859349)

...what beef does Batman have with Superman? They protect two completely different cities, and the only thing I can see creating a conflict here is a very un-superhero-like grab for power. I don't see how this idea would work even at it's most basic levels...

Re:Probably asked many times already, but... (1)

IsoRashi (556454) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859469)

I forget where I saw this mentioned, but a potential conflict is the two philosophies of crime-fighting. Superman is more of a stereotypical do-gooder, whereas Batman is more like a dark vigilante.

Re:Someone tell me how Batman could beat Superman? (5, Insightful)

3Y3 (302858) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859410)

I guess you never actually read any of the comics then, in fact basically every time they meet Batman whips superman like a little girl. Just because super man has powers doesnt mean he wins, remember, Batman is smarter and will set up any fight to his specifications. Superman isn't the brightest of fellows ever (duh..i'll use my heatvision). Just read Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller (as well as the sequal comic to is in which batman leaves superman a bloody lump) and you should get an idea what I mean.

Thats why I think this movie will be a bad idea, it cannot cature to both the hardcore comic readers and the common public. The actual comic readers would know that Batman would most likely win (or at least kick the daylights out of superman) while the common public wont be able to get past the idea that since superman has powers and batman does not, then it will be an easy victory for superman.

Slashdot has confirmed:PWP is dying by poopbot (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3859283)

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered trolling community when recently Slashdot confirmed that, after several changes were made to production Slashcode, wide posts account for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all Slashdot posts. Coming on the heels of the latest verions of IE which make page-widening more difficult, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. the wide posts that we love are collapsing into the narrow posts that we are used to, as further exemplified by the lack of Slashbots complaining about difficulty reading Slashdot's articles.

You don't need to be a Klerck to predict PWP's future. The hand writing is on the wall: PWP faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for PWP because PWP is dying. Things are looking very bad for PWP. As many of us are already aware, PWP continues to be defeated by users with thresholds of 1 or higher. Mod points flow like a river of blood. Klerck's PWP-bot posts are the most endangered of them all, having been filtered early on because of their uniformity.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

PWP leader Klerck states that there are 7 wide posts in the average Slashdot article. How many non-wide crapflood posts are there? Let's see. The number of crapflood versus wide posts on Slahdot is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7*5 = 35 non-wide crapflood posts in every Slashdot article. Tacosnotting posts on Slashdot are about half of the volume of crapflood posts. Therefore there are about 17 tacosnotting posts per article. A recent article put trolls at about 80 percent of total troll posts. Therefore there are a hell of a lot of homosexual trolls. This is consistent with the number of Slashdot posts.

But Slashdot is only part of the picture. Due to the troubles at Slashdot, negative revenue and so on, the site will soon go out of business and many users will flock to alternative weblogs, where PWP is almost completely unknown., the popular troll hangout, is also dying, its corpse sodomized in yet another Greek bath house.

All major surveys show that PWP has steadily declined in the scope of all troll posts. PWP is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If PWP is to survive at all it will be among Blog faggot using outdated versions of Slashcode. PWP continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, PWP is dead.

Joe Pesci as Superman? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3859294)

Maybe not ... but I guess George Clooney could pull it off (not my cup of tea, but a logical choice). Sean Young as Lois Lane? Works for me. Michael Keaton as Batman? No problem.

This is a fun idea for a movie. I'll really be looking forward to it (I grew up on DC Comics).

Re:Joe Pesci as Superman? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3859450)

Yeah, but he looks like a Superman, not a Batman. Keaton is a weirdo, so he makes a better Batman--he looks like a Batman.

Personally, I'd like to see Arnold Schwarznegger as Superman, but that accent would be used against him. Then again, Lawrence Welk had a weird accent, and he grew up on a farm in the Midwest. So the story could say that Superman grew up on a farm next to Lawrence Welk, and that's how he got that accent ...

No kidding, it would be damn hard to cast this movie. Most of the younger actors are borderline gay. It's hard to think of a tough guy actor under the age of 25.

XaXXon (202882) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859301)

I'm not big into comics, but I just can't see how this is a legitimate fight.. Superman would kick Batman's ass. Up. Down. Around the block. Back around the block.

First, he can fly. That's a HUGE advantage. Second, he's really strong. Really REALLY strong. It's just not really that legit a fight. Even with kryptonite.. Superman can just stand a few miles away and evaporate Batman with his heat vision..

I just can't see it...

Re:How is this a fight? (1)

nomadic (141991) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859319)

Nah, Batman's just too smart. He'll think of a way.

And Superman seems to be especially dumb when it comes to kryptonite, as he always succumbs to whoever has it.

Re:How is this a fight? (Hint: it was, Batman won) (5, Insightful)

SirSlud (67381) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859380)

Too late.

Check out "The Dark Knight Returns", where Batman defeats Superman (using some Kryptonite, btw.)

Miller (the author) got it right; Batman is the world's greatest detective mind (nevermind one of the top martial artists in the world), and basically an all around genius.

Might might be right, but only when the dude holding the might doesn't get outsmarted, as Superman did in "The Dark Knight Returns"

Batman is the coolest superhero ever. Why? No superpowers. Brains, altheticism, and a raging case of vengance. What can be more powerful than that?

I think the worst part though, was that some of the more interesting fights were single panels, just to push along the whole marvel/dc mixed up worlds. I would have given my left nut to see Batman vs Venom. Although, the Thor vs Capt Marvel was pretty cool.

Superman also flew faster than light to go back in time.

1. Time travel gives him an advantage.
2. The work required to accelerate an object with mass to the speed of light is infinite. So Superman isn't just "Really REALLY strong", he's "REALLY REALLY REALLY..." strong.
3. The universe doesn't seem to mind when Superman breaks the laws of physics.

Re:How is this a fight? (5, Insightful)

Cheeko (165493) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859477)

In the original Justice League, you had all these super-human super heros and then Batman. He was like this sorta dark guy who was out for good, but also wasn't super righteous like the super-human guys. In the comic, he made sure he know everyone elses secret weekness, and was prepared to exploit it if need be. Now I haven't read all of these cause well, I haven't even seen most of them, but I've been informed by people who've read them, that in Super Man's case, Batman had a gun with kryptonite bullets or something along those lines. And also was able to figure out who Super Man's alter ego was. I also seem to recall that Batman knew were Super Man's ice cave was, but I'm a bit less certain about this bit.

Basically while Super Man is the definition of pure physical strength, Batman is the definition of pure cunning. Batman was a loner always, even when fighting for good, and as such mistrusted even his "super" friends, and was always ready to cover his own ass first if need be.

Wolfgang Petersen also directing 'Ender's Game' (5, Informative)

Bonker (243350) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859347)

Which, in my humble opinion, going to be a lot more interesting than a fanpiece like 'Superman Vs. Batman'. Well, if you get to make both, why not?

The problem with the Ender's Game movie is that the studio is apparently trying to submarine Petersen's efforts into getting a cast that he feels is realistic for the story. You can read the AICN rumour here: []

Essentially, it boils down to the fact that Petersen wants to include a racially mixed cast to reflect the in-book and real-world race ratios at the time Ender's Game is supposed to be set. The studio has vetoed his plans claiming that white audiences won't want to go unless the adults in the movie are all white.

From the rumour:

He was flat out told "Not a chance in hell. There will be a handful of token characters from other races but every other child will be white." As the studio execs pointed out, if there are too many background characters that aren't white, white people will be afraid to go see it.

Anyone else here watch Smallville? Imagine WB turning this into a whiny ('angsty') teen drama?

It's kind of hard to imagine anybody but Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel -- somebody check Michael Keaton's schedule.

Yeah, can't picture it. No one else could ever played Superman. No, not Kirk Alyn, or George Reeves, or Dean Cain...

They have got to be kidding... (1)

fishlet (93611) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859369)

Both are supposed to be crime-fighting hero's... what will be the premise? Will one of them become evil? Also, it seems terribly mis-matched. Sure Batman's got some cool gadgets but overall he's just a guy... not some superhuman goliath from another planet. Add to that Batman's is just a local crime fighter (Gotham city)... Superman has a wider range. I just think it would make more sense to do a movie of dueling bad-guys... not hero's. Perhaps a Freddie vs. Jason movie for example- or Lex Luther vs. Dr. Evil ;-)

Well, I guess they could just put kryptonite in every scene.

Is it "Superman vs. Batman" or "Batman vs. Superman"? The title says the former, the bottom of the article states that filming will begin in 2003 on the latter.

This is important because it would tell us who has home field advantage... Whether the movie takes place in Metropolis or Gotham City... Could be a very key element...

NBC is already paying them $1M per episode, how much are they going to want for a whole movie.

I still fancy Monika though.

Batman v. Superman in The Dark Knight Returns (1)

Wixtech (16286) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859398)

Frank Miller created an excellent graphic novel treating this very subject entitled "The Dark Knight Returns" Link [] . This is a story that I truly enjoyed as a life long Batman fan. If this new movie is based on Miller's vison, I say hooray. If not, then we will have to wait and see.

I was about to post that if it wasn't Miller writing the script that it would probably just suck all kinds of balls, especially for anyone who's actually read Dark Knight Returns, and the first installment of Dark Knight 2. I don't know what kind of battle they've got planned, but I can't imagine it topping either of the ones that Miller has written.

Hollywood sucks... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 12 years ago | (#3859417)

Besides stupid chick flicks like the "Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (fucking kill me now!), Hollywood has run out of ideas. We get the same damn actors (do we really need another Julia Roberts film?) in retread cartoons, sequels and classic remakes. I want something original, fresh and that doesn't include, "Dude, Where's my car?". I want more "Pulp Fiction", "The Big Lewbowski" and "Raising Arizona" originality because I am sick of Star Wars, Star Trek, Men In Black, etc. sequels.

Besides, this would be a better movie if it was Superman vs. Stephen Hawkings. Ok, I know, I am going to hell for that.

Hulk vs. Superman: from the Internet Oracle (2, Funny)

Forget the movies. The best, funniest treatment of a superhero face-off ever was the Internet Oracle's response a few years ago [] to a query about who would win in a fight between Superman and the Hulk.

"Hulk will impale Superman on sentence fragment!"

They don't make Net humor like that any more.

When I heard "Superman vs. Batman" I thought they were talking about the last Superman movie and the last Batman movie battling it out to see which would be the crappiest super hero movie ever. Seriously though the right director will make or break this movie.

How to Do It Right (4, Insightful)

arfy (236686) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859424)

This could be good.

Pray that the screenwriter (who worked on Se7en) is adapting, or at least heavily influenced by "The Dark Knight Falls" by Frank Miller.

Now that would be something worth seeing! And if you look at the director's comments in the article it's not out of the question that this is the story they may be telling...

Dark Knight Returns (spoiler) (1)

ydnar (946) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859430)

Has anyone read the Frank Miller graphic novel?

From this synopsis [] :

"I want you to remember, Clark... in all the years to come... in your most private moments... I want you to remember my hand at your throat... I want you to remember the one man who beat you..."

Essentially Batman kicks Superman's ass.

Who Would Play the Leads (1)

_J_ (30559) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859437)

Reeve is out for obvious reasons - unless you modded him into a synthespian. But even while I liked Keaton as Batman - I wasn't to keen on Reeve as Superman - I don't think either of them would be good in this sort of movie.

I see the premise and I can't help but think of Miller's "Dark Night" books and wonder who could fill the role. I could see a - much - younger Brian Dennehy playing Batman.

But what about Supe? There were rumours a year or two about abut Nick Cage putting on the red cape, but I just couldn't see that. Chris O'Donnell [] is aging well. Maybe someone like Vince Vaughn [] . That role is a tougher one to fill.

IMHO, as per.

I can think of a better one (or 2) (2)

night_flyer (453866) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859442)

Batman vs. the Predator (awsome series)
Batman Vs. Judge Dredd (first two of the three were awsome)

Batman vs Superman always seemed a bit hokey to me

Keaton? (0, Troll)

MImeKillEr (445828) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859452)

While Keaton is/was a fine actor, Clooney was a better Batman.

Personally, I'd like to see The Rock in this film - I think he'd make a great Batman, although his physique would be better suited for Superman..

Christopher Who? (0, Flamebait)

pudge_lightyear (313465) | more than 12 years ago | (#3859456)

The original superman movies are what...20+ years old. I kinda' doubt that Warner even took into account the fact that there may be a couple of forty+ year olds that still think that superman should be the same guy he was in the seventies. Most of their target audience was probably born during or after the first and only real superman movie. Many of them associate Superman with either Dean Cain or the guy on smallville.
There target audience would probably ask...Christopher Who?

Crappy plot, I think. (3, Funny)

Batman: I finally found the people that killed my parents! Prepare to die! :holds up BatGun:
Superman, swooping in: I'm sorry Bruc-- I mean 'Bat-Man'. I can't let you kill them, that would be wrong.
Batman: Oh shut up you tight-wearing pansy! :looks at own tights: Ok, well at least I make this look good!
Superman: After all we've been through together! :wipes tear away: Prepare to die! :turns on heat vision:
Batman: Ah-hah! 'BatAntiSupermanHeatShield' activate! :heat vision deflects and blows up a nearby building:
Superman: You bastard! I'll crush you with my pinky! :lunges at the Caped Crusader:
Batman: Not so fast, Superdork! :whips out glowing green kryptonite rock:
Superman: Noo, my one weakness! My Achilles rock, as it were! :grabs Bruce's parents killers: Now I have YOUR weakness, the vengeance for your parent's killers! :laughs heartily:

...Lather, rinse, repeat...

2 hours later

Superman: :breathless and weary from a long fight: How did... how did Lex Luthor and The Joker team up to defeat us both?
Batman: :also beat-up: I don't know, but I suspect it is the scene for Batman V Superman II: "Two super-heads are better than one!"

And that's to get Frank Miller to write (or re-write) the script. The Batman/Superman encounter in Return of the Dark Night was excellent. Also, if they paired him with M. Night Shay*an. Unbreakable was just about the best superhero movie ever. I doubt the producers will have the insight to do either though.
