ADV Confirms Cable Anime Channel

CmdrTaco posted more than 11 years ago | from the wouldn't-it-be-nice dept.

Anime 516

Juanvaldes writes "ADV Films has confirmed reports that they are working to create a cable television channel dedicated to Anime. Currently they are releasing very few details about the channel itself. All that has been publicized at this time is that the channel will run 24 hours a day and will break its content into four categories, Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts." Hope I can get access to this one as soon as it comes out.

I fail to see how this is relevant. It is simply not possible for the cable companies to do something like this. It would require a complete rewrite of the CTV (Cable Television) Protocol.

And besides, what if your children only wanted to watch something wholesome, like Akira, or Ghost in the Shell? People like you really irk me the wrong way.

You should all go back to sitting by the fire and listening to the FM Stereo.

I believe that most TVs allow you to lock out channels.

If yours doesn't, then might I suggest educating your kids as to why the sexually explicit or violent cartoons are bad, or just buy a new TV that allows you to do so.

It is your job as a parent to raise your kids. It is not the cable companies responsability to monitor what they watch, it's yours.

Re:Will it come with a lockout? (1)

pulski (126566) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617532)

Besides, it's not likely to be part of basic cable. If you have the channel, you're paying for it. If you don't want it, don't pay.

Just an opinion based, not on fact, but the greedy nature of executives.

The chances are that if you bought your TV after 1998 it will come with a V-Chip, which allows you to set a password on all the "restricted" channels, unless of course it is on digital cable, in which case the box will probably come with some sort of lockout as well.

Re:Anime? (0)

It's cartoons for people who like looking at pretend pictures of girls with skimpy outfits. It keeps the teens occupied in that awkward period between 'girls are soppy' and 'you look really beautiful, may i buy you a drink'.
It has the bonus attraction of being foreign, and therefore different and exciting (this applies only to Americans).

Re:Anime? (2, Insightful)

Bonker (243350) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617572)

Imagine a world in which they made cartoons that had writing and art that wasn't targeted at small children. Yes, the show may be about racing, (Speed Racer, Initial D) but it might also be about other sports (Battle Athletes, Prince of Tennis). It might also be about robots, space exploration, martial arts, police drama, romance, organized crime, spies, religion, and yes, even sex. I could give you examples for each of the above, but I wouldn't know where to stop.

People find similarity in anime because the art tends to be similar from one artist to another and from one era of anime to another. yes, all anime protaganists have fucking HUGE eyes, tiny mouths and pointed chins. That doesn't mean that the writing, art quality, humour level, or sex quotient is similar between any two different anime.

A person who wasn't familiar with computers might as well ask, "What's the big deal about Linux anyway. Isn't it just a replacement for Windows?"

Trolllll.... Anime isn't all the same. A lot of mass produced anime is, just like our movie industry. But compare two good works, Furi Kuri and Ranma. VERY different. Or even better, compare two that lie in the same genre. Evangelion and Gundam W are two extremely different animes. If you're interested check out some GAINAX stuff, most of their work is unique in the macrocosm of Japanese animation.

Oh yeah, and there's got to be a sidekick, probably a sexxy 16-year old girl with guns the size of texas ;)
Don't forget that there will only be about 4 or five actual pictures for this whole half hour show, they will just pan back and forth over the same pictures with dialog.

I wonder where this will put the old anime clubs in the grand scheme of things? I guess at the time they were the only place to watch anime and find some friends in the process. Now it seems like with global shipping and inexpensive DVDs, the clubs are becoming smaller and less and less important.

I joined my campus' club (Show-Me Anime) when I went to college and had a great time. I met some really cool people and was exposed to lots of good anime. I hope people will still keep the clubs alive and congregate even with this new TV station.

Re:Subtitles (2, Interesting)

1000StonedMonkeys (593519) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617476)

Theoretically they could use SAP along with the subtitle support in TVs to do this with one channel.

Re:Subtitles (1)

MattT (130844) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617484)

I know it's not gonna happen, but it could be done easily with one channel... Put the original dialog on the SAP (second audio program) signal, and the subtitles into CC (closed captioning).

So if they are subtitled, you will say "yes! although I already own this." And a number of other people will say "why the fuck would I want to watch this subtitle shit?"

Christ, it is so weird how you people care so much about how Anime is presented to others. You are constantly recruiting and making sure Anime gets good PR. It is weird. If people want to like it, they will. If not, so what?

Adam Rightmann (609216) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617398)

for in my parish counciling groups, I have heard some horror stories about anime.

There was one young woman from Scotland who's fiancee would only be affectionate when she dressed up as something called Sailor Moon, which is apparently an anime character.

There was another young woman who father would make her wear revealing anime costumes for something called cosplay, I wonder if I should have alerted the authorities about possible abuse?

I have counseled countless young, over intellectual men who have perverted their sexual mores due to extensive hentia watching, for those who don't know, this is the Japanese festish animation involving aliens, tentacles and sexual relationships under duress.

I wonder why kids can't stick with good old-fashioned healthy American cartoons like Bugs Bunny or Roadrunner.

How about a Channel for the 80s kid? (5, Interesting)

I'm talking Transformers, GI Joe, Voltron, Looney Tunes, Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, etc.? I try to watch saturday morning cartoons these days (yes, I'm 26), but they lack the magic of yore.

Question: Is Transformers considered Anime? If not, why not? What exactly qualifies a cartoon as Anime?

Re:How about a Channel for the 80s kid? (1)

kaworu-sama (608217) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617440)

Transformers is considered anime. Any japanese animation is, seeing that "anime" is a Japanese adaptation of our word for animation. That is pretty much it, although some people will put strict stylistic guidelines on their definition of anime.

Ah, the magic question. There have been debates about this between anime fans for some time.

Some would argue that only animated films from Japan would be considered anime, other's would say that it's the style - the large, expressive eyes.

I've talked to some who consider some shows to be anime - like branding The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to be "live-action" anime.

Personally, I define "anime" as being related to the style - again, the large, expressive eyes, usually made in Japan but not always, often (but not always) dealing with subjects suitable for the 12 and older group.

Just my $0.02. And yes, I agree - The Matrix is live-action anime with plenty of Judeo-Christianity imagry.

Question: Is Transformers considered Anime? If not, why not? What exactly qualifies a cartoon as Anime?

I think it depends on who you ask.

Transformers, as we know it, is in the same catagory as Robotech, Pokemon, and (to a much lesser extent) Dragonball--Americanized Anime. As i have no idea what the original was like, I have no way to tell if it's closer to Pokemon (almost no edits) or Robotech (highly revised).

And in a side note, you can get a better TF fix by reading the new comic books, or (if you don't mind some animation holes) watching TF:Armada weekdays on the Cartoon Network.

Transformers - 5pm Cartoon Network
GI Joe - 12:30am Cartoon Network

Hey, huzzah for an anime channel and all, but what percentage of those 24 hours do you figure is going to be devoted to DBZ and Pokemon? I seriously doubt they'll put anything on that hasn't been edited down to a G rating, and they'll pass on anything involving sex, drugs, violence, or fart jokes for fear of letter bombing by soccer moms off their valium, so how much can they really program? Plus, I just know my darn dirty cable company won't carry it, and my apartment complex doesn't allow dishes. It's all part of some nefarious plot to allow other people to outnerd me after all my years of effort at being King Dork of the universe.

a good thing? (0, Troll)

tps12 (105590) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617436)

I've always been a fan of foreign art forms. Perhaps one day I will travel the world to see the cave paintings of Paris and the pyramids of Egypt. I am usually very supportive of exotic foreign contemporary art, such as the excellent rap music being made in Mexico (pick up the soundtrack to Amores Peros for a good sampling). But the growing popularity of anime disturbs me.

Most of these shows, supposedly aimed at children, appear to portray unhealthy stereotypes. Men are tough and brutish (and almost always smoke), white people are always fat, and women are either airheads or dominatrices. The level of humor is usually targetted at the lowest common denominator, and is filled with slapstick and bathroom humor. Then there is the level of violence, which often surpasses what would be accepted in an American R-rated movie. And I haven't even touched on the pornographic content and rape fantasies.

Put simply, this type of material could only be produced in a nation steeped in institutional social repression. It is neither appropriate nor healthy to air most of this in the US. We are a tolerant people, but this filth should not be tolerated. If you find yourself interested in anime cartoons, then I would suggest that you leave the country for good, as you are not welcome here.

There are exceptions, of course, but I doubt there are enough decent anime cartoon shows to fill out the programming for an entire cable channel. Anyway, most "anime fans" only want the hard stuff, so I wouldn't expect to see anything worthwhile aired.

Re:a good thing? (1)

uncledrax (112438) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617514)

You've stumbled across what I consider the line between good and sucky anime.
Good anime (to me) doesnt peddle to the LCD (lowest common demominator), like IMO anime like DBZ does.

Unfortunately, this channel will prob air more crap then good stuff.. if no other reason then the good stuff is generally in short supply.

While anime like Legend of the Overfiend is 'intersting' it does hold the same level of appeal to me that Bebop does. Its like the difference between watching the Drew Carey show, and a Sharon Stone movie.

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#4617587)

a few years ago, the famed Slashdot poster Anticipation of a New Lover's Arrival, The, wrote the following well recieved post of a visit to Japan. I post it as a service:

I went on holiday to Japan a couple of years ago, and stayed for 6 months or so. At first it seemed quite similar to the west, the same skyscrapers, billboards, TV, films, cars etc. The mark of mass consumerism was all around.
But the difference with the japanese is not external, it is internal. Looking at the japanese, talking to them and trying to penetrate the alien oriental mind is very difficult indeed. What are their motivations? What do they want?

Unfortunately the japanese have not really changed since the Meiji period. The americans tried after WWII, but that was set back against McCarthur's vision by the need to get japan onside against the soviet threat.

The result is that the japanese now have the same ambitions as they did in the 1930's - the same ambitions that spawned the rape of Nanking. The difference now is that those ambitions are exercised through the commercial sector, the Keiretsus, rather than through the military sector as it was last time.

I think we should be wary of the japanese, and institute sanctions. We already know that they are an uncaring and selfish race, from the way they treat whales, Ainu and the Burakimin - with astonishing racism and wholescale speciecide.

We should force japan to adopt the same values as civilised countries like the USA - we do not desire to spread our values everywhere and forge an Empire, so why should they be allowed to?

Importing their gadgets (which are produced by uncreative minds, good at technical things but not at language and art as we are) is weakening the USA and the commity of civilised nations.

Lets put an end to it.

The *real* question we should all be asking is: (0)

how will they manage to bucher it?

I still remember wondering what 'HFIL' meant on those shirts in DBZ...

Cable Anime Channel? Now that really matters :- (-1, Offtopic)

DAldredge (2353) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617443)

/. posts a story on Anime but refuses to cover the H1B Visa bill passed on 2002/11/02?

from the article.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html /u ncomp/articleshow?artid=27499106

"It is now official. On November 2, US President George Bush signed the department of justice Authorisation Bill which will make extension for H-1B visas easier.

It will also make it possible for more Indian doctors to live and work in the US once their academic programme is over.

The extension of H-1B visas will particularly benefit the IT sector. This is good news for Indian H-1B visa holders, as nearly 50% of them are working in the high-tech sector. "

oh yeah.
oh yeah.
Sweet.
I hope this channel comes to Canada, because if it does, I might have just found a reason to turn my TV on again(the last time I had my TV on was 9/11, just before I turned it off in disgust)

I would have loved this a few years ago. (0)

I used to really like anime. Now I just like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, a couple of the Gundams, and Gunsmith Cats. Since I have all of those on video or dvd (or divx). I wouldn't watch the channel much unless I found a few more shows I like. I think shows like "Fighting Foodons" have soured me on anime a bit.

Hopefully (3, Interesting)

Hopefully this means we'll get the uncut versions of the cartoons. Cartoon network edits out Dragon Ball, Not to mention what the did with Bebop and outlaw star.

Glad I don't have a litte daughter . (-1, Flamebait)

I don't know if more anime releases pedophelic frustrations or makes them more want to act on it. Scary.

cost? (2)

sckeener (137243) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617495)

I wonder what the cost is going to be? If they don't charge for access, there are going to be some parents angry that the 'cartoon' their kids were watching just went hardcore....

good (1)

fudgefactor7 (581449) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617497)

Now maybe some others will get a chance to see Urotsukidoji [imdb.com] without feeling like a perv for renting it.

I dunno QWZX (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#4617516)

I mean, how many hours of tentacle rape can you watch? I just don't see a channel for Anime taking off.

Not to mention that it wouldn't be picked up by a lot of the cable networks because of the porn content.

Will there be a Manga channel too? (0)

I need my anime pr0n.

Late Night Hentai -- Woohoo! (1)

Elias Ross (1260) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617525)

I'm holding out for late night adult anime myself.

Seriously, though, I wonder to what extent they can show boobs and sex. Even though it isn't integral to most anime, it's part of its flavor. Its spice. However, I exepect most things to be censored, as ADV doesn't want to upset the Christian right(eous).

I wish them luck.

What? (3, Funny)

G4 (2)

PinkStainlessTail (469560) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617568)

I have strong fears that the knobs at DirectTV won't be picking this up, like the G4 gaming channel. Perhaps I shall go hassle them...

whoopte fucking doo (-1, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#4617571)

Who gives a shit? It's cheezy crappy looking cartoons that feature little queer nips standing still with little waves around them, trying to signify that they are running faster than hell. I haven't seen any anime that I would consider decent. Even fucking Walt Disney makes better cartoons.

One question..... (1)

TerryAtWork (598364) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617597)

When's the Hentai Zone ?

Too bad.... (1)

John Pfeiffer (454131) | more than 11 years ago | (#4617606)

First of all, it'll probably all be dubbed. Second, incase you don't know, ADV is the source of all evil. They are a black hole that anime titles disappear into and are not heard from again.

"We are ADV of borg, all your anime are belong to us. Fansubbing is futile, you will be licensed."

Anime = cartoons. My grandson likes cartoons. He craps his pants, eats with his hands and throws temper-tantrums.

He also doesn't have a job.
