You still need a Windows installation in order to copy the game data, but the good news is that the downloadable is only 4.4 MB. I could write more, but why? Go play!"

This isn't relevant to the article, but frankly i was disgusted with NWN. Comparing it to baldurs gate is rediculous, i would much sooner take BG over NWN. NWN proved that flashy 3d graphics don't make for an interesting game. NWN was much more like diablo than BG, a hack and slash adventure with some role playing thrown in for laughs.

You still need a Windows installation in order to copy the game data, but the good news is that the downloadable is only 4.4 MB

This begs the point, why even bother with a linux version at all? Its nice that Bioware did make the game playable on Linux, but shelling out for a copy of windows to be able to play it seems counter-productive. Second, why didn't Bioware make a linux installer for the game files. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to have a hard-drive based installer that looks to the CD for the data.

At any rate, Bioware did make good on their promise to support Linux and Linux gamers should be grateful.

Re:Why? (2, Interesting)

GweeDo (127172) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561013)

I believe that this had to do with some crappy copy protection scheme they used. Bioware made more than one screw up along the way with this multiplatform release. From day one they said we woudl get a linux client and then they repeatidly used technologies that weren't available for Linux...that is why it took them WAY past launch to even get this beta out the door.

Re:Why? (4, Informative)

Some industrious Linux elves have built a data extraction tool. You can find it here [cox.net]

I'm guessing someone could probably make a package of the difference between the data on the CDs and the 1.29 required by the client, but you could probably extract the data from the patch files.

GweeDo (127172) | more than 11 years ago | (#5560979)

First of all, good work Bioware on finally get something into our hands. I hope that what they have gone through can serve as a lesson to others planning to release a game accross multiple platforms. Be sure that the tools you are using exist on each platform. *One* of the longest delays was due to the Video and Sound engine (I believe it was the Miles engine) not be supported in Linux (but then it finally was...it is a long story). This is why we need API's like OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL and the likes. It makes things a lot easier to release on a multiple platforms.

I also hope Bioware has learned to keep their mouth shut if they don't know when something will be done. They lied to the community more than once about the state of the Linux client and that made many very mad...so...wise up!

Re:Let this be a lesson... (4, Interesting)

geekoid (135745) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561003)

I wouldn't say they lied, There lack of experience in this area caused them to make some serious mistakes.

Re:Let this be a lesson... (1)

GweeDo (127172) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561102)

They said many times before the Windows client even came out that they had playable Linux clients. After the windows client was released THAT was when they started finding all these show stopping issues. They lied to the community.

Re:Let this be a lesson... (0, Flamebait)

rossz (67331) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561141)

They originally said the Linux client would be released in the box along with Windoze and Mac. Since it has taken them 9 months since the original release to get this out the door, they could not, in good faith, believe they had any chance of meeting that deadline.

BTW, sucks to run a Mac, don't it. hehe

Just the usual lies (3, Insightful)

Len (89493) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561227)

They told the same lie as every other game company, namely that the game was finished when they shipped it. I stopped believing that one a few years ago, and "the Linux client is almost done" didn't sound much different to me.

Re:Let this be a lesson... (1)

droleary (47999) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561126)

First of all, good work Bioware on finally get something into our hands. . . . This is why we need API's like OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL and the likes. It makes things a lot easier to release on a multiple platforms.

And yet there is no Mac client, which is a platform that not only has the wonderful open technologies you mention, but also has a larger and more captive desktop game market than Linux does. Seems to me that their Linux support is more of a cover-your-ass move than any intelligent development decision that should be praised.

You still need a Windows installation in order to copy the game data, but the good news is that the downloadable is only 4.4 MB.

Do you actually need to have windows installed, or can you just copy the files from some other installation, or maybe from the game CD? I no longer use unlicensed software, and I refuse to pay for Windows. That does limit my options somewhat.

Please port Baldur instead... (2, Insightful)

aldjiblah (312163) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561009)

I paid for NWN, and was immensely disappointed.

Gone were the tactical combats with different party members complementing each other, which I had so loved in Baldur's Gate and other titles.

NWN is nothing more than a 3d diablo hack'n'slash clickfest as it stands now. The storyline isn't bad but the game as a whole is nothing I'll ever play again or buy sequels to.

Why oh why did they give up the winning formula from the earlier titles!?

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (1)

Ill_Omen (215625) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561048)

I too was disappointed at first. Grab a friend or two and play multiplayer. It gets much better.

NWN isn't better in MP for some of us... (1)

eddy (18759) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561247)

Been there, done that, and the game is even WORSE in multiplayer. Boooooring.

"everyone" says that MP is what NWN is about. They're wrong as far as I am concerened. I've played BG1+ToSC, BG2+ToB, IWD1+HoW and IWD2 with friends, and we've never had such fun with NWN. We tried it. Played into the second chapter.. and it was just so incredibly boring.

I don't like saying that, but it's the truth. I've player BG/IWD/PS:T for _months_ _effective_ time, but NWN had me tired after a few days. It's all so bland, bland, bland.

Though I'm actually hopeful that the coming expansions might but the Game back in NWN.

Personally, I think there's a market for a new Infinity Engine. The problem with IE is that it's hell to work with -- the scripting was written by someone with no prior experience (or a diabolical sadistic humor) -- and the use of classic 2d-animation for characters and items was a mistake from the beginning, and the way multiplayer got hacked in... anyway, over the years the engine got almost impossible to work with, as more and more cruft collected.

However, the concept works and will work in the future! It just needs to be done right for once. NWN ("Aurora engine") isn't the improved IE, it's something else completely. Some like it that way, but I and many with me still prefer the older kind of IE gameplay.

lionheart [blackisle.com] might be it, but somehow... I don't know, I doubt it.

I think the next great innovation may come out of from an independent developer, one who grew up with the IE games and wants to do it right. There was a fork in the road, and the sign said "3D, action and spiffy effects" in one direction, and "storytelling, interaction and AI" on the other. Bioware went one way, I want to explore the other.

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (1)

Techophobe (74876) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561076)

If your playing the OC in single player, then you missed the whole point of the game. Try again with multiplayer. You get much better comments from your party, and you don't have to tell them what to do. :D

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (1)

dieScheisse (554308) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561128)

I totally agree. I quit the single player game and tried my hands at the multiplayer aspect, but it just didn't cut it. The gameplay consisted of your standard mission type goals...kill this guy, report in, etc, etc. boring...I finally traded it in at electronics boutique for a measley $15 in store credit. I'm just about through buying PC games.

On a side note about EB, I used to purchase all my PC games from them, due to their liberal return policy for PC games and their price matching. They've since instituted a 'final purchase' policy (at least in my area, i don't know if it is country-wide) on PC games as of 3/17, just like their console games and they no longer price match.

It was nice to be able to 'try before you buy'. unfortunately, we can't rent PC games from blockbuster, so sometimes, even with researching a game, you wind up with a dud. At least you could take it back and exchange it for something else.

Anyways, the store employees weren't too thrilled with the policy and gave me the customer service # and the district manager's # to call and complain about it since they said that management was not listening to them. we'll see what comes of it.

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (1)

beerman2k (521609) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561133)

Yes. I was emensely disapointed with NWN. The Baldur's Gate games were masterful. Not only was the play style disapointing, but Baldur's Gate centered around a party of adventurers. NWN gave you control of a single character and a henchman. I understand that the goal was to make a fun multiplayer game, but IMO they made the single player game terrible. Definately not worth the change.

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5561196)

I use to think the same thing until I did the following:

1) Get some of the newer modules. The ones based on old pen&paper D&D modules seem pretty good for the most part. The single player game nearly bored me to tears. Witches Wake seemed excellent but it's future is in doubt.

2) Play online or on a lan. This gets around the crappy fact that you can only have one player npc.

3) Play only with people you know or trust. Playing on a lan has almost replaced p&p D&D for my friends and I. Online players tend to be of the hack and slash Diablo type.

Hope this helps. I hated this game when I first got it, but after all the patches and stuff and the awesome modules out there, I've done a complete 180.

Re:Please port Baldur instead... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5561202)

"Gone were the tactical combats..."

Gee, this is exactly what I thought when I played Baldur's gate after growing up with the gold-box AD&D games. I hate real-time RPGs. They all turn into Diablo type RTS games. Click on your guys, click on the monsters, see who wins..

And all that pausing bullshit in Baldur's gate doesn't count as "turn based".

Is it just me? (2, Insightful)

Mac Degger (576336) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561015)

Or would this be so much more interesting if it read: "windows NWN install disks still required".

Not to troll, and kudos to the dev for doing this, but I mean this still relies on someone having paid the MS tax to play the game.

Re:Is it just me? (1)

Acidic_Diarrhea (641390) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561107)

The "MS Tax" is the additional charge a consumer is forced to pay for an MS operating system when purchasing a new computer. It is called a tax because there is no way around it. If you don't want Windows on your computer and have no plan of using it, you are still forced to pay for it if you buy from Compaq or Gateway or whatever (whatever companies are still being forced into doing this for better bulk deals.) Now, since Neverwinter Nights has been released only for a Windows environment, if you want to play it - you have to have Windows but this is not through some cohersion by Microsoft (as far as I know) and it is merely a matter of economics. There is no reason that you have to play Neverwinter Nights and it is your choice to install an OS that will run Neverwinter Nights.

You're mad at Microsoft because Neverwinter Nights has only been released on a Microsoft OS? Does that make sense in your head?

Re:Is it just me? (1)

Kaimelar (121741) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561268)

Not to troll, and kudos to the dev for doing this, but I mean this still relies on someone having paid the MS tax to play the game.

I don't look at this a Microsoft tax situation. Buying Neverwinter Nights does mean that, yes, you are buying the Windows client that you may never use. But you're also buying the data, which you will use. Think of it as though the Linux client came on the CD with NWN, and that the cost of the game bought playability on both platforms -- you know, like buying Diablo II or Warcraft III and getting both Windows and Mac versions on the same disk.

The Windows (or Linux, depending on you view) client is just an extra feature, just like an editor, or multiplayer, etc. -- if you use it, great, and if you don't, that's fine too. BioWare has consistantly delivered great games, and NWN promises to be another great game with a feature that most don't have -- the ability to run on my preferred OS.

It's an ironic comparison between Orcs and Iraqis, made by simulating the ASCII control code for the backspace key (ctrl-H, or ASCII 8).

I guess it impresses chicks, or something.

YOU LIKEWISE FAIL IT (651184) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561135)

As I understand it, it works like this.

On a misconfigured terminal, hitting the backspace key would produce a Ctrl-H instead of actually backspacing over the text you'd just typed. This has become a 'joke' where you type what you were thinking, and hastily backspace over it and type something more tactful, only to get inserted control characters instead! We laughed for seconds.

Anyway, I hope this makes you feel less of a pathetic n00b^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hclears things up for you.

Yours,
You Likewise Fail it.

It's just some asshole's attempt at being funny. The ^H shows up when you try to backspace in some Unix systems. Of course, it doesn't do that when you're typing a message in slashdot, so it just looks fucking stupid.

Blowing some Karma... (0, Flamebait)

craenor (623901) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561069)

Having plenty of Karma built up, I'm going to blow some on what will undoubtedly be a post modded to oblivion as "flamebait" or "troll".

I think the OS snobs of the world, should stop expecting game companies to expend the resources needed to include your OS in their support structure. Writing a version for NWN that works with Linux was a big undertaking for Blizzard.

Maybe they just expended the effort to please the Geeks of the world, but I seriously doubt that the number of people who refuse to use an M$ operating system make up enough people to warrant them writing a different version of the game for financial reasons.

Furthermore, I think those of you who refuse to run an M$ Operating System should stop your whining and complains when a game producer does not expend the effort to write you and your few friends a different copy of the game.

I could care less what your issues are with Microsoft, but if you want to play the newest games and play them when they release...either give up that dream, or save game developers, programmers and the rest of the world from your pleading complaints and capitulate to using Windows on one of your computers.

Craenor - patiently awaiting the flame mods

Or, perhaps the game developers could just refrain from promising to deliver what they can't.
Crazy thought..I know....

I agree - it's kind of like saying you don't want to use roads, and demmanding that car manafactures design you a car that flies because you refuse to pay road tax.

Re:Blowing some Karma... (1)

Not at all. Bioware promised (at least initially) a simultaneous release of the windows/linux/mac versions. Many people placed pre-orders based on this information. Then, on the week of the release, Bioware makes a statement to the effect "oh by the way, we don't have the linux/mac versions done yet. But they will be soon."

Fast-forward to 9 months later....the linux beta version just gets released....no Mac version in site.

To sum up...I am not demanding the game developers support my tiny platform; however, don't promise me a version for my platform, and then screw-the-pooch (elegant, I know) by utterly failing to deliver (mac version, thank you).

It's actually rather doubtful that you will be "blowing" any karma at all, because quite honestly I do not believe any moderators care about your unsupported, unwarranted, childish rantings.

Are you saying that consumers do not have a right to express their wants, opinions, and wishes to a company, or more than likely a company with whom these customers already have an existing business relationship? It very much appears that this is what you are saying.

Are you some how seriously disadvantaged by this release? Are you hurt by it?

No? Well, perhaps you should inform the developers , producers, and publisher how very concerned you are for them, and how certain you are that they have made a horrible decision.

I'm sure they will be tremendously grateful not only for your appreciation of their effort, but also for your humble willingness to impart to them your unspeakable wisdom.

You sir, truly are a god among men.

Installing the Linux Client (4, Informative)

rossz (67331) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561118)

Step 1. Install the windoze version on a windoze box.
step 2. Update the windoze version to 1.29. 18meg download - and it's ssssllllloooowwwww.
step 3. Copy a pile of files over to your linux box. It would have been nice for them to include a script to do this for me.

e.g. 'getnwn /path/to/mounted/nwn/directory

I'll write my own. Hmm, maybe I can just install the Linux client into the mounted windows directory and save me the trouble.

step 4. Install SDL if you don't already have it.
step 5. Install the NWN Linux client.
step 6. Profit!

Started this message when the update to 1.29 was at 8%. Finished this message at 58%. Damn slow.

Benchmarks? (3, Interesting)

Some people just can't do things right... (4, Insightful)

aber (141743) | more than 11 years ago | (#5561134)

From the client download page (get the link from head post): You will need to get the Neverwinter Nights game resouces from an existing Windows installation of the 1.29 build of Neverwinter Nights. Why must it be this way, you ask? It is because there is no feasable way to get the game resources from the InstallShield cabinet files on the Windows version CDs.

What a bunch of idiots... These retards take almost a full year after the release to come up with the Linux client (that they told everyone would be ready for shipping with the cds), and then this. Why should anyone put money in such a half-assed effort like this? Guess what, in the end few Linux users will buy this crap, and those morons will go: "told ya, shouldn't have invested time in the Linux market, Linux is not there yet."

*sigh* bastards....

You cannot buy the linux version anywhere, you buy a windows version and download the client.

Linux clients for all their new games, pending publisher(or whose ever above them) allowing. I would like to see that new Star Wars game they are making for linux. Well hopefully things go well for them. I hope that Linux gaming is just not a fad but a reality for gamers. Most people I've asked don't use Linux because there aren't enough games to play. Maybe it will close the bridge.

Epic Games deserves tons of props for making a Linux client for UT2003 available on the same disk set as the Windows version. Supposedly it installs pretty easily. By comparison, Bioware didn't do much for us at all. This requires a major hack to install. Not worth celebrating.

Oh yeah, Doom III will be coming out Windows/Linux cross-platform. Two words: Carmack rules.

From the Bioware page:

You will have to purchase a copy of the game to get a valid Neverwinter Nights CD-Key. Of course, with this purchase you also get a lovely Neverwinter Nights mapkin, a spiral-bound game manual, and three plastic-coated aluminum-reinforced W1nd0z3 brand coasters.

Heh. Think they know who thier audience is, or what?
