Agreed. The matrix sucked the first time, and it still sucks no matter what volume of spinning-off occurs.

DrMrLordX (559371) | more than 11 years ago | (#5573060)

I have to agree with the parent. The Matrix wasn't all that great, and it was hardly worthy of all the hype it generated. The Animatrix shorts currently available have been equally lacking in lustre. Especially the first one. Watching those corny little anthropomorphic robots build some futuristic pyramid by hauling materials up a ramp(using a crude sled pulled by ropes, no less) was ridiculous. Our modern contruction techniques are already far superior to that nonsense. What kind of a moron would use robots in such a horribly inefficient fashion?

Let's face it: The Animatrix has shown us a vision of the future that is both implausible and rather stupid.

The bodies of the thousands of innocent civilians who died (and will die) in these unprecedented events could give a good god damn about obscure science fiction, your childish Lego models, your nerf toy guns and whining about the lack of a "fun" workplace, your Everquest/Diablo/D&D fixation, the latest Cowboy Bebop rerun, or any of the other ways you are "getting on with your life" (here's a hint: watching Cowboy Bebop in your jammies and eating a bowl of Shreddies is *not* "getting on with your life"). I have the first two working in Totem (XINE-based) after installing the Quicktime Sorenson codecs.

There's a patch going around to make MPlayer handle these very strangely encoded videos.

Re:Has anyone gotten these to work on Linux? (4, Informative)

Spy Hunter (317220) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572737)

Works fine for me. The actual animatrix movies have some funky still image at the beginning that confuses mplayer, but xine seems to work better (and I hear there's a patch for mplayer). This trailer doesn't have that, and it works perfectly.

The deal with the first frame (5, Informative)

benwaggoner (513209) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572981)

Specifically, the movies seem to have been encoded with Discreet's Cleaner, using the "High Quality First Frame" option set to JPEG instead of Basic. This feature dates from the Cinepak CD-ROM era, where the Cinepak codec had low maximum quality for still images. This feature would make the first frame a JPEG, giving better quality for the one frame that tends to get stared at the most, especially with web-based progressive download.

Of course, since the movie uses Sorenson Video 3.1 Pro, which does just fine with still images, they should have either left the feature off, or just used the Basic mode, which would have made the first frame a really big keyframe, but in the same codec as the rest of the movie.

Still, this kind of movie is perfectly legal in QuickTime, and part of the open definition of the format. The format is so complex that no one has made much of an effort to implement more than the 5% or so most commonly used features.

Re:Has anyone gotten these to work on Linux? (3, Informative)

Genyin (415163) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572862)

The first animatrix works fine in the latest release (rc5) of mplayer with the quicktime codecs. It didn't work in rc3 when I tried, so the patch was applied sometime in between there. (but the fix mentioned elsewhere was applied at some point, I checked the sources)

Presumably they're all encoded similarly...

Re:Has anyone gotten these to work on Linux? (4, Informative)

Abcd1234 (188840) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572998)

Yup... the only trick is that some of the movies have their audio encoded/split funny.

In the first episode, the small and large versions have the soundtrack split into two pieces, of which mplayer only plays the longest. Hence, audio is delayed 10 seconds... solution? Play the medium sized one which, oddly enough, isn't like this. Another option is to dump the audio from the medium version (using -dumpaudio and -dumpfile) and play it alongside the large version with mplayer's -audiofile option.

For the second episode (and presumably the remaining ones), the audio is encoded using MPEG4-AAC. Unfortunately, mplayer's support was broken for mp4a (at least in rc4, is this fixed in rc5?). The solution here was to dump the audio stream using mplayer and manually decode it using faad (search google). Then, play the resulting wav file along with the video using -audiofile.

There are many forms of gymnastics you can perform... the end result will be that you are nimble and agile, and still can't view these things in mplayer :P

Yeah, I did, actually, just a few hours ago, and it annoyed the fuck out of me. I suppose that I'm fighting a losing battle trying to get people on slashdot to see how stupid all things matrix are. I suppose it's likely also to much to hope that this "three hour trailer before the movie you actually came for starts" doesn't become a regular occurence.

Oh well, I can still post my opinion on it and watch people mod it down.

I went to see Dreamcatcher too, and I actually enjoyed the Animatrix segment more than I enjoyed the feature. Long ago (longer than my lifetime, anyway) there were always several short films before the feature. I wouldn't mind seeing a return to that.

DreamCatcher has a new Animatrix Mini (5, Informative)

mgpeter (132079) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572596)

I went to DreamCatcher tonight with my wife and my daughter (a Stephen King Fan), and after all the previews they showed a 10 minute (or so) Animatrix Mini called "Final flight of the Osirus" and I have got to say I was Totally Embarrassed.

I could not believe the fight scene (or should I say SEX SCENE) at the beginning. Whoever they got to do the animation needs to go get some, and soon!

If the Matrix Movies are going to be more like that short, the sequel is going to blow worse than Caddyshack 2.

Re:DreamCatcher has a new Animatrix Mini (4, Informative)

tezzery (549213) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572644)

The 'Final Flight of The Osiris' animatrix episode was done by Square USA, it was directed by Andy Jones who has done work on Final Fantasy, Titanic and 1998's Godzilla.

I'm sure this is common knowledge among those who've seen previous animatrix episodes but there will be a DVD release with the whole collection of shorts.

I -was- gonna go see Dreamcatcher to check out final flight of the osiris.. After reading your review, I hope at least the animation is good.

> I -was- gonna go see Dreamcatcher to check out final flight of the osiris.. After reading your review, I hope at least the animation is good.

You should go see Dreamcatcher to see Dreamcatcher - it's worth it. If you're smart, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're not so smart, you likely won't get how cool it is.

As for Final Flight of the Osiris - it's good. The opening flirtatious fight scene (what the prude you replied to called a 'sex scene') was cute and fun. If you're going to an R rated movie, it's way-tame compared to the MPAA rating of the movie it's attached to, an hardly a reason to get embarassed. The rest of it is straight out of the Matrix type stuff, and also quite good. The animation quality of the people is as good or better than the Final Fantasy movie. The animation quality of the environment (especially inside the Matrix itself) is substantially better - many parts of which are almost indistinguishable from 'reality'. ("You think that's air you're breathing, punk? Well, do ya?" - Clint Eastwood in the Matrix :)

If Kazaa didn't suck ass, I'd have a copy of it on my machine by now, to add to the two segments released online. *sigh*

I DID go see Dreamcatcher to see Dreamcatcher. And it wasn't too bad at all, even though the changes they made to make it fit into a movie somewhat diluted the premise of the book. But heck, isn't that always the case? I did still enjoy it.

The matrix short tacked on to the front annoyed me, as I've never liked the Matrix, no matter what the animation quality is.

But, seeing as how lots of other people disagree with me, go for it. Just remember to stay for Dreamcatcher when what you came to see is over. :)

Re:DreamCatcher & the new Animatrix short (1)

Gortbusters.org (637314) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572797)

I will confirm, the animation was almost life-like in many isntances. I was pleased with the whole little short animation skit.

I kept thinking, wouldn't it be great to have an entire movie with that animation quality?

Re:Dreamcatcher & the new Animatrix short (1)

Tumbleweed (3706) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572827)

Well, the Animatrix is done by 7 different groups of people (9 segments), and they're in several different styles, most of which aren't intended to be photorealistic. I generally prefer 'regular' animation to that kind, as it's not 'there' yet, and that's too distracting for me. I keep trying to see the parts that aren't right, and which ones are dead-on, and that just distracts from enjoying the show, for me.

All the Animatrix does, for me, is make me want to see the next Matrix movies, really, though they are fun on their own. The storytelling in Final Flight of the Osiris is much better than in The Program. The flirtatious fight scene really gets you involved in the characters enough that what happens to them in the rest of the short really gets to you. Well, it did me, anyway.

Re:Dreamcatcher & the new Animatrix short (1)

Gortbusters.org (637314) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572851)

That's interesting... I can't wait to see the next renditions of the animatrix. Hey, maybe we'll even get a new cartoon network show out of it?

I also agree that the begining scene got ya to like the characters and by the end you were sad that they died, yet happy the mission was complete.

Aside: nice gallery on your website there! I like the Bainbridge Island, WA pics.

Re:Dreamcatcher & the new Animatrix short (3, Interesting)

Tumbleweed (3706) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572908)

Hey, I'm still bummed by some of the people that died in the first Matrix movie! I'm even _more_ bummed that they weren't brave enough to keep the character 'Switch' as a 'switch' (female in the real world, male in the Matrix - or it mighta been the other way around; I can't remember). That would've been much more interesting. Switch and Dozer were cool - I miss them. And Mouse - he was hilarious.

Come on now, no need to get pretentious. I saw it tonight, and while yes, it's fun and campy, it isn't exactly what I'd call an intellectual film. Everything is pretty much presented at face value.. not much at all to "get". It's clever at best.. on par with Starship Troopers in my books.

According to the website [intothematrix.com] , there are 9 episodes to be released on the dvd on june 3rd. The site lists "The Second Renaissance Part 1" as "First of four episodes completely free". It also lists "Program" as "Second of four episodes completely free". The other two episodes, "Detective Story" and "The Second Renaissance Part 2" are slated to come out in april and may, respectively.

From these descriptions, I take it that these are the real episodes, not just trailers. Also, unless there's been an early release of the third episode, this announcement is repeat of an announcement from 2 weeks ago.

In the first Matrix movie, Neo is supposed to be the hero. He is supposed to deliver humanity from a scourge of machines that, with AI, decided we were expendable.

But the first Animatrix makes we humans, pretty much en masse, into horrible villains. It's the same tired old Humanity Is Cruel And Stupid line. Yawn. What's worse is that it tries to make you root for the machines!

So which is it, Wachowskis? Machines are evil, or all of humanity?

It's in the form of a document in a 'Zion archive', which seems to indicate it was created by humans. It could just be a copy of robotic propaganda, but I think the narration was the same as the "welcome to the Zion archive" voice.

Re:I just don't get it (5, Insightful)

Calmiche (531074) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572786)

Umm. I hate to throw myself into this feeding frenzy, but the Wachowski brothers never made the point that the machines were evil.

In fact, from several lines in the original Matrix, it is apparent that the machines were simply defending themselves. Humans released the bombs that clouded the skies, hoping to kill the robots.

The Agents tell (Morpheous, I think) that the first matrix they created was a paradise, but that humans rejected it. Without pain and suffering, humans couldn't exist. The Machines were trying to keep humans as happy as they could.

And humans were never expendable. The machines needed the energy produced by humans to exist.

I think it's more a case of "When does self defense and the right to exist clash with the right of others to do the same?" In otherwords, Neither humans nor AI is truly evil. They are both just trying to preserve their own lives. Calmiche

After seeing what this place has degenerated to, I must totally agree. This was originally a technology news site which they covered, albeit sometimes multiple times, tech news.

And then, the "War Posts" came in. War this! Anti-war that! Reading most of anything there made me sick.

And after these last few days, I've realised that slashdot is already dead. The site's still here, and so are the people. What's dead is the real tech news community. It reminds me of Usenet when they let the AOL'lers in, and when the lamers moved in to EFnet. There's no one day it happens.

Good riddance.

As a last move to show my point..

There once was a movie called The Matrix, and a scene in that movie was similar to his post.

But since this is slashdot and this story is about the animatrix which is based in the world of the matrix, i'm sure no one here has ever heard of the matrix.

Sad News: Saddam Hussein, dead at 65 (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5572674)

I heard some sad news today, on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. Saddam Hussein, dictator and leader of Iraq died last night of a shrapnel wound sustained in a collapsing bunker. He was 65.

Too bad he couldn't have faced a War Crimes tribunal instead of taking the easy way out.

In other news, writer stephen king died last night because of a stab wound. Police are still looking for suspects, but they believe a piece of paper found in Mr. King's pocket might be a clue. It said simply: "Vote for CowboyNeil"

An APB has been put out for someone with this alias and police brutality will ensue once the perpetrator is found.

Sorry AC, but if you had RTFA, you would have realized that this is, as the subject would indicate, is the TRAILER for the DVD containing ALL of them. The third free one doesn't go up until April :D

This is a NEW TRAILER for the WHOLE SERIES, its not a new EPISODE, i did catch the first few seconds, and it does have alot of new stuff.

So just to clear up the confusion (wasn't this release a few weeks ago) for those who dont read the actual article or cant get to the link cause of the almighty /. effect.

This is a NEW TRAILER for the WHOLE SERIES OF 9 EPISODES, of which 2 have already been released.

The thing I really like about the animatrix shorts (5, Insightful)

SuperKendall (25149) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572889)

No so much that they are an interesting way to examine the universe the movies are set in, though that is fun. The thing I like best about the whole thing is that it's a great testbed showing that you can release video for free and still make bundles of money selling people the DVD version!!

Eventually, all of these shorts will be on DVD, but before then almost all will be on the web (not sure if "last Flight of the Osiris" is supposed to go up or not?). But even though we can all get hi-res versions for free, I'm sure a lot of people will still buy the DVD (I know I will).

This is just the sort of thing that helps to show how free versions of movies online can actually help, not hinder, sales.

Abcd1234 (188840) | more than 11 years ago | (#5572974)

Umm... I was under the impression they were only releasing the first four episodes online, and the rest on DVD. Any links supporting/refuting this?

Bishop923 (109840) | more than 11 years ago | (#5573119)

IIRC only 4 of the 9 episodes will be downloadable. We already have two and the other two will come out in April and May, then in June they will release the DVD with all 9 episodes.

What is... Animatrix? (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5572896)

What the hell is Animatrix, and why is Slashdot the only place I ever hear of it?
(seriously, I'd like to know)

Re:What is... Animatrix? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5572933)

Sorry, I guess that was a troll.

I'm just trying to point out that "Animatrix" keeps popping up as a topic and I've never seen it introduced here. Each time it shows up, it's like a continuation of an earlier discussion that I missed, so it could use some explanation for the people out of the loop.

Re:What is... Animatrix? (3, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5572969)

Here's a bit of background for those of you:

Animatrix is "a series of 9 anime stories set in the world of matrix, to be released on DVD. They are done rather beautifully, by the looks of the trailer, in both traditional anime and using computer graphics".

I resisted believing that's what this is.. It seems like an unlikely combo to me.

I still really like how some of the images are very pink floyd-esque (think: The Wall)

and damn!

that is one fine rendered ass.

hopefully i don't get a harassment suit for that ;oP

I definately enjoyed the return on the life-like action...I just wonder how all the various styles of animation are going to blend together in the final product...
