Re:Once again, a joke.... (2, Insightful)

Tet (2721) | more than 11 years ago | (#5638480)

I'd be surprised if Enlightenment ever hits .20.

This is something that pisses me off about many free software projects these days -- artificially low version numbers. It always used to be the case that 1.0 was the first public release of something. You'd reserve 0.x for a limited beta program, typically only lasting a couple of months at most to shake out any major bugs before release. But nowadays, it seems like the vast majority of free software is pre-1.0. You can't reasonably claim that Enlightenment is still beta. It's used by thousands of people around the world, and was at 1.0 level many years ago. I.e., the first public release of the code has long been and gone. I blame Linus -- Linux spent too long at 0.99.x, when it was actually quite usable long before then. But it set a bad precedent.

Please (1)

Re:Not even trying (0)

I agree, these types of jokes are so much better if you can put up an actual file for download.

I remember the lzip [sourceforge.net] (lossy zip) compression files from a few years ago...that was one of the best April Fools Day joke I've ever seen. Check out some of the files in the tarball, README, for instance. The idea of lossy file compression could work out in the future though..if only they could fix that blue-shift...

Enlightenment releasing 0.17 wouldn't even be plausable, let alone a 1.0 release.

Next on Slashdot

  • Bill & Melinda Gates Fund donates US$1m to GNOME foundation, Mandrake
  • Home built rocket launches geek into LEO

This is April 1, why not something *really* improbable?

From the heel-freezes-over dept
CmdrTaco today had sex with a woman. Thie marks his first sexual encounter since having his nutsack removed, and his first experience with a woman. "I thought she was a boy!", a sheepish CmdrTaco admitted, "I saw her at the porn store buying anime, one thing led to another, and next thing I know, there's a naked girl in bed with me!"

Researchers are split on whether this encounter means Mr Malda is bisexual. "Let's be honest", said Dr. Ruth, "he had anal sex and made her wear a strap-on. Clearly, he was trying to pretend she was a man".

Awesome! V1.0 is here! (1)

mindriot (96208) | more than 11 years ago | (#5638081)

I'd just like to review the 'jokes' so far... call it Flamebait, if you want to, but it just annoys me and I have to say it...

  1. RFC 3514 [slashdot.org]
This one was nice. Obvious, but nice... as usual, the RFC people are doing a good job. Too bad Slashdot ruined it with the first April Fools dupe [slashdot.org] ...
  2. Gentoo on RPM [slashdot.org]
Well, good idea of the Gentoo people, but waaay too obvious... imho a good AF joke is one you believe to be true for at least a couple of minutes until you've looked at it very closely. But OK, this was only number 2, so it was still nice... now AF story bloat yet.
  3. Whitespace programming language [slashdot.org]
Hm. As has been pointed out, it's not new [cpan.org] ... and even more obvious than the previous one (and pretty much boring too). I think then CPAN [cpan.org] people know how to really make a good AF joke...
  4. Microsoft + Security [slashdot.org]
Hey... better at least. Nicely combining a true story with a joke story... though the joke was not very believable either. Also, it's number four already, and we're only half-way through the day...
  5. The Register's story [slashdot.org]
OK. By itself, not all that bad... but not too overwhelming either. And, on Slashdot, we're now at Number 5 and counting.
  6. The dupe. [slashdot.org]
OK, increasingly stupid... but then again, maybe the best joke today on Slashdot :)
  7. Enlightenment 1.0 [slashdot.org]
Aawwww, come on. Enough. It hurts. And again, blunt joke. Latency between reading and noting the joke: .01 ms. Including the dupe, we're at seven now... and the day is still not over. I think I'll stop reloading the web site until I'm sure April 1 is over in all time zones...

For some quality 4-1 jokes, see here (German) [uni-karlsruhe.de] , the above-mentioned cpan.org, or even the Freshmeat one [freshmeat.net] which isn't so bad. This [mit.edu] ain't so bad either. Kuro5hin points to this interesting link [museumofhoaxes.com] .

Can you /. editors pleease try to come up with a single good hoax and dump the rest? That would be nice.

eno2001 (527078) | more than 11 years ago | (#5638121)

Wow! I just grabbed the tarball, and did the autoconf, configure, make jig. I must say I am impressed! First of all, the size of the installation is pretty small compared to all other environments. AND... this really beats the pants off of KDE and GNOME. As usual, there is lots of innovation. All the window widgets can be moved around to suit the needs and tastes of the user rather than forcing them to use one style. They've added the ability to incorporate scents into the themes! (I am using the Evergreen scent right now... Ahhh fresh!) But what's impressed me the most so far is the predictive nature of the interface. There is some mechanism that Raster has worked out to detect the readiness potential in your brain before you actually click on something. This results in menus and objects performing operations just before you actually decide to utilize those menus and objects. Pretty slick! So far it's been dead on every time. as I think, Mozilla is loading up web pages and links in extra tabs behind this page. Kind of interesting to find out what you are going to look at just a fraction of a second before you realize it. The file manager is JUST INCREDIBLE!!! No more of that silly hierarchical jazz... Now we finally have a file manager that works just like we think. For any document you create, the files are offloaded to paper hardcopies. This results in a more tangible object with a limited, but pretty reliable user interface. To re-open and edit the file, You just slam it on the flatbed and E 1.0 will automatically scan and OCR it back into the application of your choice! How cool is that? the best thing is that you no longer have to worry about magnetic media failure with regard to your docs. Ahhh.. I think I'm in love! Enlightenment 1.0, you light up my life!

Just for giggles, when you finally decide it's time to release a 1.0, release it on April 1.

Duke Nukem Forever also released on same page. (1)

Come on folks.

The E people add a 0.01 every 8 months. How long you think it will be before they get to 1?

Not in your lifetime.

There hasn't been a new stable E release in 2 years, point release or otherwise.

The project is dead, basically.

If you really want to reach enlightenment [everything2.org] , you'd better start by not using X at all. ;-)

go look at the anouncment page....it says 1.0 is out, but then look at the top right corner, stable is 16.5 and unstable is 17.

Linux comes one step closer to being just like Windows!

Enlightenment is a Window Manager (1)

Hi. This is my usual rant about Slashdot articles announcing that Some-Random-Name has reached Version N+1 or added Some-Generic-Feature-Like-Themes without saying what the product actually is or does. (Of course, people who don't know Enlightenment's version history won't get the April Fools' Joke here...)

Better co-operation (1)

failedlogic (627314) | more than 11 years ago | (#5638624)

I would have expected better co-operation on this prank. I'm guessing Rasterman went to the effort of editiing the webpage in the new section. The stable version on the top of the page is/was still listed as 0.16.5 and CVS as 0.17. That was a dead give away.

Now, if this story gets posted tommorrow then I will be happy since it will presumably be true. Otherwise, the mods are definately slacking off.

Dammit! (1)

I got fished in by this one because I wanted it to be true...

The Alternative... (1)

According to the CVS, the other option was to post : "Today the Enlightenment team announces the culmination of many months of neogtiations. Enlightenment will be sold to Microsoft Corp. and all the technology will be applied to the upcoming releases of the Windows(R) Operating system."

Arrrrrrgh! (1)

GreyDuck (192463) | more than 11 years ago | (#5638803)

Apparently I am the sucker born every minute. I actually bought this for a whole 20 seconds while I clicked over to the Enlightenment website and stared at it in confusion.

And yes, in fact I did hear that the word gullible isn't in the dictionary. Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah.

Grr. I know better, right? RIGHT?

And in other exciting news... (2, Funny)

The long awaited new Phoenix browser release is ready, and the new name has been announced! As you can see here [texturizer.net] , the new name chosen was Phallus!

I'll be happily browing the web with Phallus 0.7 on my Enlightenment 1.0 setup any minute now!
