The Two Towers DVD Release Dates

timothy posted more than 11 years ago | from the waiting-for-the-hi-def-version dept.

Lord of the Rings 335

FortKnox writes "Mark these dates on your Calendar: 8/26/03 & 11/18/03. These are the (US) DVD release dates for The Two Towers. Like Fellowship, the first date is the release of the DVD, and the November date is the release of the special edition (with rumored extra 48 minutes of footage). Another one ring.net page has more details on the actual footage."

Forget the release dates, it's the pre-order dates that count!

You mean you are going to buy the first edition when it comes out? I plan on renting that. I'll buy the special edition.

I'm kind of tired of the re-release game they play with DVDs - though it is nice with Lord of the Rings that they tell you in advance that there is a special edition coming out. But I do expect after the third movie for a super-duper special edition box set we'll all have to have.

It's one thing to have a lot of hype on slashdot about lord of the rings. It's another thing entirely to give it its own catagory. That's just sick.

Re:You know (2, Insightful)

So does The Matrix and Starwards... what I want to know is why Futurama doesn't have its own catagory :)

I agree with this post.

Re:You know (1)

mandolin (7248) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796657)

Perhaps, but you do realize how many people here wanted just such a category, right? And who made their opinions known every.damn.single.time a LOTR story was posted, right?

(usually it was along the lines of "Star Wars has its own category so why can't LOTR")

Re:You know (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5796769)

More specific categories just make it easier to filter things out.

-Maher-

Re:Why? (2, Insightful)

dtfinch (661405) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796598)

It's greed. They don't want you to just buy the special edition and be done with it. By delaying the special edition, they may be able to get you to buy the regular edition as well.

Re:Why? (3, Funny)

NeeNee3 (601111) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796638)

Exactly! They are counting on the kind of fans that love the movie so much they rush out to by the regular edition as soon as it hits the shelves because they can't wait. Then, they know these same fans are going to buy the special edition when it finally releases because of the all the extras.

Heck, a lady I work with loves LOTR so much that she bought the special edition of Fellowship of the Ring TWICE! She lent the first copy to someone who was taking too long in returning it, and she didn't feel like waiting the extra day or whatever to get it back, so she went and bought it again. Movie companies love these kind of people!

Re:Why? (3, Informative)

fidget42 (538823) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796690)

The official reason is the extra production time it takes to edit the extended release. I'm not sure what an extra three months would really buy them, but that's the official line.

Waiting for the complete set? (3, Insightful)

ic3p1ck (597610) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796577)

I'm personally waiting for the complete box set. I hope it will include all the extended versions of the three movies with all the extras, i.e greater than the sum of these intermediate special edition releases.

The smart move (2, Interesting)

WIAKywbfatw (307557) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796718)

Amen to that. The smart move here is to wait until after all three movies have been out on DVD for about a year and then buy the "ultimate, super-duper, this-is-the-one-that-you-really-want" box set that contains all three extended additions and tons of extras.

If you really need to see them on DVD before then either borrow a friend's copies or rent them out.

Anything less will only lead to disappointment, in the next life if not this one.

Herein lies the problem (4, Insightful)

Galvatron (115029) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796815)

I KNEW this was going to happen. With so many people getting burned on special editions, people won't buy the original releases anymore. Now, the studios are practically obligated to make special editions, which further reinforces people's avoidance of the standard edition. I honestly think the DVD market is permanently fucked up by this, I can't see any way that the studios can reverse the assumption that all movies that were at least decent will have special editions, so there's no point in buying it when it's first released. I'm sure it was a tremendous moneymaker when they started, but now Hollywood's shortsighted greed has obligated them to waste money printing a non-special edition that no one wants, and filming special filler, just so that people will believe them when they release the real version.

How many discs? (1)

Rai (524476) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796831)

I'm guessing the first box set will have 9 discs - 2 for each film and 3 for extras (1 extras disc for each film.)

Save your money. (3, Insightful)

Asterax (522761) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796582)

I really don't see much point in buying the LotR DVD's seperately. You just know that New Line will compile together all three movie's in one big massive package with an infinite amount of DVD extra's.

Re:Save your money. (4, Insightful)

evilviper (135110) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796685)

Well, some of us buy DVDs for the movie, and don't care very much about the rest. Deleted scenes are always good, but if you want interviews with air-headed actors, just watch the late shows.

Re:Save your money. (4, Insightful)

coupland (160334) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796724)

Your comment makes no sense. If a single compilation is what you want then you are guaranteed not to get it. The media industry has proven time and again that it makes no sense to release something their customers want when it's easier and more profitable to release many iterations of something you ALMOST want. Hopefully you'll buy them all and make them rich. Star Wars for example, will we ever see a digital DVD compilation? No. Not while you keep buying things piecemeal...

Not in theaters? It still is in my neck of the woods (MSP/St.Paul,MN). Not a lot of 'em, but within a half hour drive. Heck, it hasn't even hit the cheap theaters yet, which is what I've been waiting for to see it again.

It is kind of annoying that I have to wait an extra five months to get the Special Edition, tho.

I'm hoping I get a $10 coupon to the Return of the King movie.

I'm a poor college student and I was so happy that I could spend $30 on a 4 Disc DVD, and get a FREE (afternoon shows here are $5.50) showing of the newest LOTR movie. It was very nice walking in to the theature after classes, handing them my coupon, and sneaking a bottle over to the water fountain because I was too broke to even afford a drink.

I sacrificed many meals and ate leftovers from friends and neighbors to save up enough for the dvd. There was a strong sense of value for only $30. I got a movie, tons of extras, and a free pass to the theater.

Plus the whole eating less made me kill off a couple pounds. I should try it again. the Lord of the Diet... Hmm...

Re:I just watched two towers yesterday.. (1)

ic3p1ck (597610) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796651)

You know it is possible to have DivX encoded video and the AC3 soundtrack in an AVI? Of course its a little bigger... (not that I have anything like that of course - just stating a fact)

That being said, I would much prefer to have the full quality version especially for such a great movie.

Re:I just watched two towers yesterday.. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5796682)

i watched the DVD with pure/untainted vobs.

it was a copy of a dvd screener released by the studio.

perfect picture.

that was one huge download!!!!

Re:I just watched two towers yesterday.. (1)

jroysdon (201893) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796766)

As it was a "copy," wouldn't it have to be two DVDs to fit on consumer-burnable 4.7GB DVDs? At least, that's what I've been watching. Anything else, and it's not the true original data off the multi-layer screener DVD.

Side note: I also had a screener copy of FoTR, and then I bought the original theatrical version of FoTR and the Special Edition (with the bookends, which look great in my library around my JRRT stuff). I plan to buy both of TTT as well, and I only let non-family watch it after it stopped showing in the theatre (if they hadn't seen it already).

That's where my morals are. I stopped Napster-isk sharing of stuff about two years ago. I'll still swap a high-quality rip of a CD to check it out, but if I like it, I buy it, if I don't like it, I nuke it.

It's the same round of release schedule as FoTR and likely RoTK too. The savvy ones will wait till they release the super-duper release to end all releases boxed set containing all three movies (normal and extended) plus extras. In the meantime, rent (from the video shop) or borrow (from friends who couldn't wait and went out and bought the DVDs as they came out).

Sure, it's a moneymaking move. But at least you know it's coming. Given the amount of creative effort that went into the movies (went to the LoTR exhibition in Wellington,NZ and marvelled at the stupefying amount of detail and craft that went into the movies) I've no problem with them generating as much revenue as they can.

Here's a kinda dumb question (1)

Daetrin (576516) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796732)

Is it possible to play the normal versions of the movies on the special edition DVDs?

It would be convenient to be able to compare the theatrical release with the extended version without having to buy both editions. Of course given that they'd love to sell two copies of the movie to every person it's probably a vain hope.

Re:Here's a kinda dumb question (3, Informative)

MrP- (45616) | more than 11 years ago | (#5796747)

No, that's why you're supposed to buy both like I did =)

They even make the bonus stuff diff on each so you'll have more reason to buy both.

Mark these dates on your Calendar: 4/28/03 & 8/11/03. These are the (China) DVD release dates for The Two Towers. Get in line now...(and wear that mask, dammit).

When do the video tapes come out? btw, the movie wasn't as good as the book!

yeah, but the treants really kicked some ass!

The first half of the movie pretty much sucked. I was in fear that they screwed off the second book (note that I've never read all the books, but currently am reading them) All the action in the second half made the movie. The Dwarf stuff was kind of dumb. (I'm mean come on) but the treant battle was fantasic. (can't remember if they call them treants in LotRs, but I'm talking about the tree people)

Anyhow, This is one of the few movies that I will actually buy as it comes out. Normally there could be years if ever that I would buy a movie.

Note to creators, Make the movie for "The Hobbit" to finish off the series.

DVD was in the shops four months ago?? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5796745)

A month ago or so I have seen the DVD of The Two Towers in the shops about four months ago - new year day to be exact I was in mainland China, and had some time for shopping. At least four different versions, prices ranging from USD6-8. As I had just seen the film in cinema I did not bother to get a copy. Instead I bought James Bond (was not in the cinema yet and I did not want to wait to see it - I found it not worth watching in the cinema anyway)

I have the idea this are unofficial versions :)

Wouter.

Recently one of my friends, a computer wizard, paid me a visit. As we were talking I mentioned that I had recently installed Windows on my PC, I told him how happy I was with this operating system and showed him the Windows CD. Too my astonishment and distress he threw it into my micro-wave oven and turned it on. I was upset because the CD had become precious to me, but he said: 'Do not worry, it is unharmed.' After a few minutes he took the CD out, gave it to me and said: 'Take a close look at it.' To my surprise the CD was quite cold and it seemed to have become thicker and heavier than before. At first I could not see anything, but on the inner edge of the central hole I saw an inscription, in lines finer than anything I have ever seen before. The inscription shone piercingly bright, and yet remote, as if out of a great depth:

4F6E65204F5320746F2072756C65207468656D20616C6C2C 20 4F6E65204F5320746F

'I cannot read the fiery letters,' I said.
'No,' he said, 'but I can. The letters are Hex, of an ancient mode, but the language is that of Microsoft, which I shall not utter here. But in common English this is what it says:'

One OS to rule them all, One OS to find them,
One OS to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

It is only two lines... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5796779)

It is only two lines from a verse long known in System lore:

"Three OS's from corporate kings in their towers of glass,
Seven from valley lords where orchards used to grow,
Nine from dotcoms doomed to die,
One from the Dark Lord Gates on his dark throne
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie.
One OS to rule them all, one OS to find them,
One OS to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie."

Gonna start a piracy thread! (3, Funny)

I was in the Philippines over the New Year and I came across a very nice Muslim women who sold me an awards screener for The Two Towers on DVD for $2 US. I have seen the movie in the theater(obviously) so I can attest to the screener's validity and quality. Basically a pretty dope find, and the whole movie is on exactly 1 DVD(huge plus IMHO).

I also bought all 3 Indiana Jones movies and the first 3 Star Wars captured from Laser Disc on DVD. Total cost: $14 US. Arrrr Matey!!!

extended edition poor (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5796840)

Has anyone else noticed how the extended edition of Fellowship was poorer than the original cut? In fact, it only highlights the extremely poor editing and pacing of the series overall.

Now I saw these movies opening night at midnight, so don't get me wrong. But this is the second worst editing I've seen for a big budget film. The worst being Ali, which is completely incomprehensible and confusing. I don't see how it got any stars much less nominated for awards. You'd have to know the entire Ali story to even remotely follow the movie, and even then I don't think you'd like it.

Back on topic, I really think editing has become a sore spot for American directors. They just can't transition between their multimillion dollar scenes.
