Sweet Trailer! (4, Interesting)

Smitty825 (114634) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961550)

Not that this is very insightful, but I was able to see this trailer at E3. It kept showing on a loop, and each time it was shown, a large crowd gathered around. Everyone there seemed to comment that it was amazing, and it's worth spending a bunch of money to upgrade their PCs when it is released!

Any screen captures? (4, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5961554)

Are there any screen captures of the trailer for us dialup people?

Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (4, Insightful)

Viewsonic (584922) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961557)

XBox might be decent if your system is too slow, but to upgrade it decently will still cost about the same as an XBox .. Plus you will get all the mods and levels people will make, which you wont get on the XBox version.

That, and 10 years from now when you've got a P12 Gforce FXP 50 that can do 2400x1600 3D fluid on your 50" monitor, you might be happy to play this instead of the 640x480P version on the XBox...............

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (4, Insightful)

Squarewav (241189) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961597)

you can pick up a used xbox for about 150 even new one for 200, last I heard the pc version will require a rather expensive video card, but even then I suppose the xbox version will be rather crappy compared to the pc one, not just that the screen is stuck at 640x400 and interlaced at that, but im sure many effects will be left out to get a decent fps out of it. The xbox version is not marketed for pc users, but for console users

According to Carmack, the Radeon 8500 should run Doom3 "perfectly". And that can be found for less than $100 these days.. even less by the time it's released.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (1)

strstr (539330) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961779)

Average going price for a Radeon 8500 these days is $65ish. It's not hard to find some shops selling them for under $50. Used cards are even less.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5961718)

Except for the fact that the Xbox has been able to do both 1080i and 720p from day one.

I dare say that playing at 1280x720 at 60 Hz progressive frame synched will look a hell of a lot better than 1600x1200 (or whatever) when your framebuffer buffer-swaps at 75 Hz and your game buffer-swaps at 45-50 Hz on average.

But yes, your hands will first swell up and turn purple, then fall off. So that's a down-side.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5961773)

Technically, the X-Box is capable of 1080i and 720p, but do you really expect the equivalent of a Geforce 3 to render Doom3 in 1280x720 at 60 fps or even 30 fps?

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (2, Insightful)

HoneyBunchesOfGoats (619017) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961653)

Who is to say that the Xbox version won't support extra mods and levels? That would be a cool feature.. download, burn to cd, go to menu on Xbox screen, load on to hard disk, play.

You're right about the replay value though. The Xbox version will fade away after the console falls to obsolescence.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (1)

Babbster (107076) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961660)

The Xbox is now at $180. A top-flight video card would cost almost twice that and even going down two "levels" in terms of card quality would still cost as much as $200. I won't even get started on the fact that there are still people out there who've barely broken the 1-GHz mark and could still be using SDRAM on an old motherboard (oops, I got started).

I'm not going to make any claims that the Xbox graphics quality will match that of a good PC with a good video card as such claims would be false (though the next gen with 1080i might be close enough for jazz), but trying to argue that the price factor is comparable between Xbox and PC is never going to make it in the truth department.

I got a Radeon 9100 for $100 off eBay. That will proabably be sufficient to run it pretty well.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (2, Insightful)

Babbster (107076) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961729)

Hey, I'm sure it'll be playable with that. I'm sure it'll be playable on my 1GHz PC with a GeForce MX420 once I turn down many (most?) of the special effects. But I guarantee that before two years are up you'll want/need to upgrade again, probably for at least another $100. By the time, the Xbox is replaced with the Xbox2 (or whatever they decide to call it), most dedicated PC gamers during the Xbox's life will have spent at LEAST $200 on graphics cards, if not more.

It's not that I think the Xbox is superior or that I hate PC gaming (I've been playing a ton of Freelancer the past week-and-a-half) - I do think that console gaming will outlive PC gaming but that's another topic entirely. Rather, I was pointing out that the cost of an Xbox isn't a good argument to use against it since a gaming PC will ALWAYS (ALWAYS) cost more.

Re:Why bother... Get it for PC, higher res + mods. (2, Informative)

timeOday (582209) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961757)

Okay, the price isn't comparable to an xbox.

On the other hand, with every new video card or CPU review on slashdot, we hear a chorus of "why bother? Nobody can even use the power of a $400 system!" so that harmonizes nicely with "Doom3 is unrealistic! It requires too much computer!" The only time things are REALLY wrong is when there aren't people moaning on both sides of the issue.

As for the 1 GHz barrier, I haven't broken it yet. I'm playing BF1942 with a C566 overclocked to 850, in a motherboard+ram I bought for a C300A overclocked to 450. Thanks to a new Geforce4 ti4200 bought for $80 at Compusa, most of the maps run just fine! I was planning to upgrade the computer, but changed my mind because BF1942 runs well enough. So maybe Doom3 (or a better subsequent title using the Doom engine) will give me reason to stimulate the tech economy.

Hehe seems Doom is going to make me upgrade again (I need some more ram, a new video card, and a faster processor, gonna wait for the game to come out so I can get some pretty good prices on today's best hardware, which should run the game perfectly)

Jon Carmack: dooming society? (-1, Troll)

GoatPigSheep (525460) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961572)

Lets talk about Jon Carmack. Jon is the legendary programmer of such classic PC games as Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke nukem 3d, Quake 1, 2, and 3, unreal, and the upcoming doom3. Jon has single handedly created the genre known as the first-person-shooter. He has also popularized the Direct3d 3d format over Microsoft's competing Opengl format, as well as caused public interest in 3d cards when he first released accelerated quake for the s3 virge chipset. Jon carmack has redefined gaming on PC's.

Now stop for a moment and think... What would have happened if Albert Einstein had worked creating amazing pinball games instead of creating the theory of relativity? Humanity would suffer! Jon carmack is unfortunately doing JUST THIS, using his gifts at computer coding to create games instead of furthering the knowledge of humanity. Carmack could have been working for NASA or the US military, but instead he simply sits around coding violent computer games.

Is this a waste of a special and rare talent? Sadly, the answer is yes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. Not only is Jon carmack not contributing to society, he is causing it's downfall. What was the main reason for the mass murder of dozens of people in columbine? Doom. It's always the same story... Troubled youth plays doom or quake, he arms himself to the teeth, he kills his classmates. This has happened hundreds of times in the US alone. Carmack is not only wasting his talents and intelligence; he is single-handedly causing the deaths of many young men and women. How does he sleep at night?

Carmack is a classic example of a very talented and intelligent human being that is bent on total world destruction. Incredibly, he has made millions of dollars getting people hooked on psychotic games where they compete on the internet to see who can dismember the most people. I believe there is something morally wrong when millions of people have computerized murder fantasies, and we have Jon Carmack to thank. Carmack has used his superior intellect to create mayhem in society. Many people play games such as quake so much that their minds are permanently warped. A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months after he lost a 'death match' and became catatonic.

It is unfortunate that most people do not realize how much this man has damaged all the things we have worked hard for in America. Jon has wasted his intelligence, caused the deaths of innocent children, and warped this country forever. To top it off, he got rich in the process and is revered by millions of computer users worldwide. Perhaps one day the US government will see the light and confine Jon Carmack somewhere with no computers so he can no longer use his intelligence to wreak havoc on society.

Re:Jon Carmack: dooming society? (1, Interesting)

Azureflare (645778) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961598)

Hmm, I wouldn't make the leap to say that Doom caused massive massacres at schools, but I would agree that Carmack's obsession with video games doesn't exactly help society. I would suggest, however, that the videogames used by the US Military to "train" soldiers probably were very much influenced by Carmack's video game development. Now, I'll leave it up to you whether or not that is a good thing (desensitizing people to violence, that is...)

I think that this obsession with violent videogames is just a part of the larger psyche in humanity; there is that dark side that just keeps on butting it's head in. The computer gives a very large degree of expression, and violence seems to be natural for the computer. I'll let you decide all the psychological reasons behind the expression that forms through the media of the computer.

Re:Jon Carmack: dooming society? (4, Interesting)

mansemat (65131) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961639)

Ok I'll bite... (Even though you'll be modded into oblivion in a few moments).

1) Carmack's games were never intended to help society. His games help society about as much as Mountain Dew, and I think that is quite alright.

2) I think the military actually used a custom DOOM port for traning. The game wasn't influenced by Carmack, it was written by him.

3) WTF does "I'll let you decide all the psychological reasons behind the expression that forms through the media of the computer." even mean? "expression"? Did you mean "expressions", "emotions", "inspiration" (good or otherwise).

Stop pretending to be smart, it makes you look stupid.

Play Postal 2, or read American Psycho.

As I put away my shotgun silenced by a dead cat stuck on it's barrel and drew out an antrax filled cow-head.
Looking out over the horde of civilians burning to their death because of the gasolene I covered them with then ignited, There was something that made me think "Hmm, this game is violent"... I think it was the newspaper in the corner. Yes. Definatly the newspaper.

People use computergames, books and movies to ESCAPE from REALITY. It doesn't make people get more violent.

IMHO Sims is the most dangerous of video games, because people who are playing games that emulate real life probably would be better going out and LIVING it.

Doom 3 preview is just the same old thing with just better graphics. Not to flame but I mean come on, when you start the preview of with "And then something went terribly wrong", it just sounds like another Friday the Thriteenth movie.

On the other hand, watch the E3 "in game demo" of Halo 2 and you'll be absolutely stunned. There really aren't any words to describe the coolness of this game. This game is going to be absolutely incredible.

Search KaZaa for halo2, halo2demo or halo 2 demo; and you should find the bootlegged video of the demo.

jaywhy (567133) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961737)

The first Halo didn't have any puzzles nor I doubt will the second. Watch the in game demo and you'll see there is definately enough shooting and killing things to satisfy your rage.

Bungie has always been about making games with an incredible single player experience with an incredible story. Marathon, one of Bungie's first games, came out around 8 years ago, and people still argue about the story [bungie.org] . The whole Doom series, Quake, and even Half-life just get boring after playing the single player once. What keeps people coming back is a good story. Not just mindless action; why are there zombies again?

I'm glad a company like Bungie is actually pushing the envelope of what a good game actually is. Not just the same old game with better graphics.

Half-Life 2 teaser available too! (5, Informative)

Get the Half-Life 2 teaser here [ign.com] as well! It's not as good as the Doom III vid, but it still looks wicked. Half-Life was probably the best FPS I've every played, and a lot of my friends agree, so my fingers are crossed for HL2 to rock just as much.

Don't even bother downloading the trailer... The graphics in doom3 are absolutely terrible. The game looks about as good as the FIRST unreal.

I don't know what everyone else is hyping about but this is one game I am going to AVOID.

Post Speeds? (2, Interesting)

E1ven (50485) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961623)

Just for the sake of an unofficial experiment, could people please post the speed of their download, whether by BitTorrent, Freenet, or FTP?
Please also, if possible, post the maximum speed of your connection, or if you are downloading anything else at the time.

It would be very useful to help to collect some data on this.

At about 2:00 am (est) I got 75 kb/s on a line of what usually seems to be 768kbps (so it maxed it out). That was from the planetquake3 link (one of their 4 download options, the second one down I think).

But it's obviously dead now.

I was getting over 100KB/s, download started almost immediately. I've left it uploading for a couple of hours after it was done. First time I've used BT, very cool :) No luck with other methods, the web sites are busted.

Holy fuck, looks GOOD, especially if that's all in-game footage. I was especially impressed with the terrain and the shadows. Yup, definitely a new machine in the near future for me :)

I was surprised (or not) to see SPIDERS in the game! OK, OK, not as bad a frogs, but fuck, that's gonna be a bitch.

BTW, my download finished going around 170KB/s, about 2/3 my line's max. It's uploading steadily at 80.

Using BitTorrent:

Not sure about the download, but I'm pushing out around a steady 150 kBytes/sec (wavers between 130-175 kB/s on average, and managed to peak it at 198 kBytes/sec.

Averaging around about 100-110 tcp connections (both directions), peaked at about 120 when I was doing 198 Kb/s.

don't give doom3 best of show two years running.. You already gave them it last year - which pretty much means that the game will be delayed ala freelancer , homeworld, giving them the award again automatically means that the game is vapour. like team fortress 2 or duke nukem whenever. And this goes for counter strike condition zero and half life 2 as well.

If you have to give it to someone give it to microsoft for some piece of shit XBOX exclusive noone gives a rats arse about like Pray. Giving awards for games in development is a brain dead thing to do anyway, akine to giving a acedemy award for the best daily's or the top ten best treatments being thrown around bill the producers office

BTW cool preview.

The Doom 3 trailer was pretty impressive, graphics-wise. However, the Half-Life 2 trailer displayed more astounding physics and AI. Both engines, years in the making, and built from the ground up are sure to compete for consumer and developer dollars. It'll be interesting to see which will be the ultimate victor. You can find the Half-Life 2 movie here: http://users.pandora.be/vanhoef/HL2/halflife2_pce3 2003_2dn_qt.zip

The Story of Job (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#5961665)

Job lived a long time ago. He was a good man who obeyed God. Job prospered. Then one day Satan went to God and said that the only reason Job obeyed God was because Job was comfortable. God said to Satan, OK wise guy, go ahead and see what you can do to Job. Job will remain loyal no matter what.

Satan brought all kind of trouble and sorrow on Job. But Job still refused to curse God, no matter how bad the situation.

Satan lost. God rewarded Job for his faithfulness. God restored Job. The moral of the story is that no matter how bad things get, love God and obey his commandments. You'll be glad you did.

What Doom III is all about (5, Insightful)

Fuzuli (135489) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961682)

I really don't care much about the gameplay of Doom III. Why ? Because Carmack's greatest contribution to gaming is not the games he creates for the last few years, his real contribution is the technology he gives to many talented others for implementing their ideas in a more stunning way.
What if gameplay of Doom III sucks ? What if it does not make it to the hype ? Nothing..No problem at all: as we've both seen before someone with a good idea will licence the technology and will give us a new game that'll rock our world. And considering Carmack's huge affords to make his technology easy to modify, we'll probably see much cooler mods too. Half life, was built on quake 2 engine, quake 3 engine was the base for medal of honor, and the list goes on. Carmack is not only coding a game, he's creating the technical foundation for next generation of games, and even just for that he deserves respect and all his Ferraris. Still i can guess how many will be bitching about "how Doom III sucks" when the game is out. Just try to see how much the guy alone has done for gaming. And for god's sake please stop that "what a wasted talent" bullshit, we have enough of scientists, and genius elsewhere, let the man do what he likes with his own brain .

Doom 3: Playing it (4, Informative)

westyvw (653833) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961694)

Well since I have played the Alpha:

You NEED a fast vid card and at least 512 megs of ram. The ram really helps.

I dont see how the XBOX can even get this to look right without seriously watering it down.

Playing this game on a PC is like playing Doom, in the sense that it suprises you, hell is even scary.

But the way it looks just brings you in, I found myself looking at the tiles in the bathroom, at checking out the elctron pulse by stanind in it WOW.

Carmack has gone all out to add in the visual features, using light and shadow to his advantage, and those monsters are frightening. They attack with a vengence.

heres a link that will help you with the Alpha, including graphic modifiers. Nice FAQ in as well:

Re:Doom 3: Playing it (1)

flatface (611167) | more than 11 years ago | (#5961740)

The pre-alpha was so slow because it was running a debugger and it was UNFINISHED. I forget where I read this, but the finished version will not require much. It's quite an impressive game, needless to say. The leaked alpha kinda' ruined this because everyone's played it already.

Is there going to be a native Linux port of this? If not, I think I'm going to go insane.

It seems that all of those links are slow/not responding... even my BitTorrent stream isn't doing too well. (C'mon, folks, leave you BT's open for others, please?)

Looks like any servers hosting this video are in for a /.ing... I'm sure it will be worth the wait!

I don't think I'm going to be rushing out to buy this one. Apart from anything else it looks too much like Half Life and not enough like the doom of old.

Now if they were to port MOH to the Unreal 2003 engine, now that I would upgrade for.
