If it runs under Linux, then you can get it to run under Debian using binary hardware emulation and an ordinary hex-editor.

Oh, OK. The reason I was asking is that I've been told many times by the friendly folk on #debian that it isn't actually Linux, it's GNU/Linux. I wasn't sure if they were the same thing.

How to Annoy people in Online Shooters (-1, Funny)

Michael's a Jerk! (668185) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066463)

No Man is an Island, Except Me -- Many servers turn on friendly fire. Almost all of these have some way to punish those who kill their teammates. You may sit out the next round, loose some health or be booted from the game. However, this only happens if you actually kill your teammate!

If your team is steamrolling the other, why not make things more interesting? At respawn, pull out your pistol and shoot your teammates in the leg! They'll gimp out into the rest of the world with a third of their hit points greatly evening things up. Remember, fair play is what the FPS community is all about!

On servers that give you the option to boot people who TK, this tactic can take on a whole new dimension of fun. When your greedy teammates resent you evening things up by shooting them in the knees, they're turn on you. You must punish their selfish actions by booting them off. This will give them some time to dwell on their actions and appreciate how you were only trying to restore balance to the game.

The Bridge Troll -- Many maps have a single, narrow exit from respawn. Outside that door awaits a horrible, violent and often gruesome death for you and your teammates. Rather than let your fellow players rush headlong into a meatgrinder, stand in front of the doorway and warn them about the dangers of the outside world. It'll take a while for this to sink in, so ignore their cries for you to move. Tough love, indeed.

If Friendly Fire has been turned on, feel free to combine it with the first tip and boot people who don't appreciate your life-saving technique.

The Jukebox -- These days many games allow you to comminicate by voice with other players. Its often overlooked that one can transmit virtually any sound to the other players! I enjoy making the game a little more surreal by playing circus music non-stop. Its been my discovery that most people value hearing circus music in the middle of a firefight. Other good songs are the Meow Mix jingle, any Christmas carol sung by the Chipmunks and the audio from any pornographic film.

Some players will mute you, while others desperately wish they knew how. Yet these players are a minority and you can bask in the warm huzzahs of your teammates for brightening up their playing experience.

The Kofi Annan Technique -- Playing the offense in Counterstrike? Well, violence never solved anything! Going out and shooting up a bunch of terrorists won't make the world a better place. And a terrorist shooting a bunch of police just makes their cause look bad.

Negotiations are the key to success in this world. Rather than rush headlong into a bloody skirmish, stay back at your respawn point. Find a good place to hide and then try to resolve your conflict through talking. Sure, your dead teammates may bemoan the fact that you're not violently avenging your death. But when they see that you were able to reach a solution without resorting to conflict, it will be a valueable lesson from them. So feel free to stay hidden until time runs out. You may not have planted the bomb or rescued the hostages but you have learned a little about life.

Shutters click as cameras capture the publicity stills, the pictures that will be on the cover of every magazine this week. This is how the world will remember the Olsen twins: matching tight pink blouses highlighting firm, buoyant adolescent breasts, tight black jeans suggesting a level of sexual experience which the twins do not, in fact, possess.

When the pictures are complete, the twins are turned so that they stand facing one another. Their arms are held behind their backs. The bailiffs bring a pair of cuffs for each girl. The cuffs have no keyholes; they are not designed to be removed. This fact is not lost on the girls, who begin to sob helplessly as they feel sharp steel close around their slender wrists.

Twin winches hum to life, pulling the girls up onto the balls of their naked feet. They begin to strangle almost immediately. They emit tormented gurgling sounds as boiled hemp digs into their tender throats. Quivering lips strip a couple more years off their apparent age. Their increasingly desperate facial expressions confirm that the Olsen girls are in no way prepared for the sudden pain. They have led lives of comfort and pampered privilege. They have never known suffering, until now.

The winches fall quiet, their cruel work done. This is where the girls will remain: in that place where the pain is psychologically overwhelming but not physically dangerous, in that horrible place where they could, perhaps, remain forever.

Still, this is an execution. And so the girls must not remain on their toes forever. They listen carefully as the announcer explains the rules of the game. He makes it sound erotic and exciting, and that is surely how the audience sees it. But it does not sound erotic and exciting to Ashley or Mary-Kate. Indeed, it fills their hearts with an almost limitless dread.

If nothing else happens, then in one hour's time, twin trapdoors will open beneath the girls' feet. Because they are already on their toes, there's no chance that their necks will snap. They will have to dance themselves to death--a process which, the announcer explains, could take up to an hour, because the twins don't weigh very much, and because their nooses have been tied loose.

If, on the other hand, one of the girls chooses to take action, she can buy herself a quick, easy death. As the announcer speaks, bailiffs slip small cylindrical remote control units into Ashley's right hand and Mary-Kate's left. If either girl pushes her button, then her winch will lower her down onto the gallows platform, while the trapdoor drops out from under her sister's feet. She may watch in comfort, her breathing perfectly unrestricted, while her sister endures a terminal slow hang. The girl who pushed her button will then have earned a neck-snapping long drop.

The moment the announcer finishes his introduction, the twins begin to negotiate through their tears. At first they are selfless, altruistic:

"You have to drop me, Mary-Kate," Ashley whimpers. Her voice is thick and rough. The noose is tight, and it hurts to speak. "You're my baby sister. I have to take care of you. I can't bear to watch you hang!"

"Baby sister? You're two minutes older than me, Ashley! And how do you think I'd feel, if I had to watch you spend an hour strangling to death? No way! We'll die together!"

"Don't be stupid, Mary." A little anger surfaces now, through the pain, through the laborious breathing which is required to get even a few words out. "Do you know how much that'll hurt?

"Hurts now," Mary-Kate replies. She is being economical with her words, for each one costs her dearly.

"Yes. And we're still on our toes. Airdance...much worse."

"Scared," says Mary-Kate.

"Then push the button."

The girls perspire as they suffer. The thin pink cotton of their tight tops sticks to their skin; the wet fabric is slightly translucent. Naturally, they wear no bras. Their taut, pouting young breasts press up through their blouses, yearning towards the heaven they will surely soon reach. The nipples are large and unusually hard; the announcer explains that this is a normal response to controlled asphyxiation. Bailiffs approach and unbutton the twins' trousers. The zippers come down. The men peel tight black denim off of wet, slender thighs. The twins are wearing minimal satin g-strings in hot pink. This grown-up underwear looks shockingly incongruous on their pubescent bodies, and yet it is also deeply sexy. Their bellies are flawless, the tight flatness of youth enhanced by careful dieting.

In the second half hour of their ordeal, the twins become less cordial:

"Can't believe...you're so greedy, Mary. Making me watch...you dance..."

"I'm greedy? You're such a bitch...like I wanna...watch you hang..."

"Then we both get...what we most fear..."

"Shut up, Ashley!"

Towards the end, pain and panic combine to make them say some rather unkind things to one another:

"Want to dance on air, don't you? Afraid if you push the button....I'll be the big star?

"Fucking cunt, how can you say that?"

"It's true...you always want to be in the spotlight...you need to have all the glory...never enough for the both of us..."

"Shut up, you little whore! How dare you?"

"You know it's true."

"You want to die, Ashley? You want to die? Fine! Then you can die!"

Mary-Kate regrets pushing the button the moment her feet hit the deck. "Oh God I'm so sorry Ashley," she blurts, but it is far too late. Her sister's eyes grow wide with horror and disbelief as the well-oiled trapdoor swings open beneath her, sending her plunging to her doom.

Mary-Kate stands sobbing in her noose and cuffs, feeling guilty for each unrestricted breath as her sister dances. It is the most horrific spectacle she has ever witnessed. Ashley kicks like a cheerleader, the sculpted muscle of her long slender legs tensing and relaxing as she hangs. The involuntary action of her firm young thighs pulls the crotch of her g-string into her hairless virgin cunt; the g-string is so wet (with perspiration?) that her pussy is clearly outlined through the satin. Ashley has never looked so helpless, so vulnerable...and yet so beautiful. The way that her impertinent young breasts bounce as she convulses; the way that her tiny tummy undulates...there is something sexy about it, Mary-Kate has to concede.

But that realization just makes it all the worse when she has to look at Ashley's face, which quickly turns red, then grey, then blue. The tears are flowing freely, as is the drool. She was right...oh, God, she was right! It's so much more painful than a mere tiptoe hang; Mary can see that now. "I'm sorry!" she wails, again and again, knowing that her sister can't hear her, knowing that she is not, in fact, forgiven.

As predicted, Ashley goes the distance. She has the body of a sixteen year-old supermodel: tight and skinny, with plenty of endurance. Sometimes respiration is painful for her, sometimes it is agonizing. But she does continue to breathe, somehow.

Mary-Kate (and everyone else) watches attentively as the pain slowly fills Ashley's twitching, suffering body. She is so physically expressive...it's obvious now, where the pain is, how bad it is. Mary-Kate, who knows her sister's body as she knows her own (for they are, after all the same) can see it easily. The agony has spread from Ashley's desperate lungs all throughout her torso; it is in her belly now, moving down towards her pussy. Soon it will consume her.

When Ashley's motions suddenly become more vigorous, Mary-Kate knows what it means. These are her sister's death throes, which at least mean that their mutual ordeal will soon be over. But to watch her sister's ending--the vacant, lifeless eyes, the body still twitching in agony, breasts heaving, drool-covered lips quivering, hips rocking instinctively in a very suggestive way--is almost more than she can bear. Ashley is more animal than human now, and soon she won't even be that.

Ashley dies spectacularly, of course. She goes stiff, breasts thrust up and out. The death rattle tears its way out of her throat. Piss erupts into her soaked g-string as she convulses briefly and goes limp.

As promised, Mary Kate draws the long drop. But there is no end to the slender teen's misfortune, for her neck does not snap after all, and so she must dance as well. It takes her only ten minutes, for her fall did draw the hangman's knot tight, tight enough to snuff her...but it hurts tremendously. Indeed, the announcer speculates that her pain might actually be even more intense than that of her sister. Certainly Mary-Kate puts on a spectacular show, stretching her long lean legs towards the floor far below, wrapping her thighs around her miniscule g-string as her sister had done. Her braless breasts bounce freely. No way would Ashley capture all the limelight. No way. They might focus on Ashley's longer ordeal, but they would remember both deaths. Yes.

Just to make sure, Mary-Kate begins to sex it up as she suffers. Her stiff-nippled breasts bounce with such vigor that it actually hurts, but she doesn't slow down. She tightens her virginal pussy muscles, pulling the g-string in close against her hymen. She begins to rub the pink satin against her sex, making love to her panties for the benefit of the audience. The rippling muscle of her deeply toned belly speaks of youth and energy, fertile possibilities snuffed out in an instant of pure agony. Her angelic blonde halo frames a face stricken with torment. Blue cheeks spasm beneath the tears and drool. Her eyes are wide, but she is still there: she feels it all, right up to the end.

And of course, she has to stare at her sister's dangling corpse as she twists in her noose. For ten minutes of endless agony, she must live with the choice she has made. And then her bladder relaxes and she joins her sister in the next world.

Something may be going on with the "Early Release" story thing on /. This story has a RED title background on my main page and I am NOT a subscriber...

Just thought I'd mention it so /. can fix a potential issue.

Ok, I've started the download (3, Funny)

RTCW is a superb game multiplayer, but it stinks singleplayer. I wonder if the ET developers had the rug pulled from under them when attempting to develop the sequel because of the single player aspect being too weak. Throw in an aging game engine and perhaps they saw no viability in selling it and decided to toss the already designed maps and MP bits out as a freebie.

Still I thought the ET test game was excellent and I'm looking forward to this. IMHO, Wolfenstein just kicks the shit out of the likes of UT2003 with their flashier visuals simply because it is not one tedious fragfest with everyone bouncing around like kangaroos.

Red Title Bar (4, Informative)

Zach` (71927) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066578)

A red title bar signifies a "subscriber-only" story. Notice that the timestamp is for 8:15am -- a time in the future. That is when the story will (or should) debut for non-subscribing Slashdot members.

There seems to be a glitch in the Mat^H^H^HSlashdot system, or perhaps they are attempting to lure more subscribers by showing off the features of the system.

Totally lame and transparent marketing ritual.

I'm not following you. For one thing, I don't subscribe, and I see the story. For another, the time stamp says 7:15am -- a time in the past (in this time zone, at any rate).

Isn't that kind of backwards? You'd think the people who pay up would get to see the version that's easy on the eyes, and the deadbeats would have to see the eyewringer version.

I am a subscriber, and i now see three different colors on the index page:
A red one, which is an article from the mysterious future, as i see them often;
A *blue* one, being this article;
And ofcourse the normal green ones.

This article just disappeared from my front page (1)

HidingMyName (669183) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066592)

I was browsing it and opened another /. window and it wasn't there. Perhaps there is a glitch?` I do like the idea of having an on-line editor to actually read problems associated with new stories, the link to the editor seems like a good idea (after all /. doesn't want to be like the NY Times :-).

Win/Linux Games...Mac? (5, Interesting)

cedmond (515813) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066602)

I noticed, along with this game, that Unreal Tournament 2003 also was released for Win and Linux simultaneously with the Mac version (of UT 2003 anyway) coming out much later. I know that Mac games are always later to market but does anyone have a theory (or even an actual reason) that Linux versions come out along with the Win version? Is development for the Mac platform really that much different now with OS X? Just curious.

LordYUK (552359) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066626)

Its just developers saying that they refuse to remap the game keys just to accomodate a one button pointing device (I refuse to call it a mouse) in the year 2003.

FYIW, I LIKE the mac, and have gamed on one before, and would LOVE to own one (I play mostly Blizzard games, which are now released concurrent). :)

ZorinLynx (31751) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066696)

Anyone who is a gamer on a Mac has long since unplugged the one button mouse and connected a mouse with three or more buttons and a scroll wheel.

This is a rather silly reason not to port a game to MacOS X...

revividus (643168) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066704)

My guess is that companies figure if the linux crowd will spend all that time and energy making wine, winex, and figuring out how to make their games work under them, it's a good bet there's a market for ready-to-run-in-linux games.

I think the perception of macs, OTOH, is that they are used only/mostly for graphic design, video editing, and music production.

Just a guess, but many of the programmers probably use Linux for much of their development work - thus have an interest in seeing it work on Linux. MAC - not so much.

I haven't been keeping up with news about this game. Is there a Macintosh version coming out? Return to Castle Wolfenstein is available for Mac OS X, so I would think it would be easy to get this out for it as well.

Either these companies are very smart or very stupid, I personally would have bought this game in store for a max of $50 which I'm sure other people would have as well and therefore increase revenue for the companies, but the fact that they are giving it away will really get the word out on them as well and give them the image of a "gamers gaming company" so when they will charge players for thier next big hit, people will remember the name and buy in (I know I would). Either way, Kudos to them for having the guts to give it away and make many MANY gamers very happy :)

Thanks guys!!!

I was a tester for this game (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#6066707)

I was an early beta-tester for this game, and I regret to report that this is yet another game that you'll need to keep your Windows partition around for.

Believe me, I'm an expert at optimizing my Linux machine - why, I just graduated from Redhat school last month!

At any rate, the Linux version is just plain SLOW. The Windows version, on the other hand, is a joy to use...

Is there something wrong with the Linux kernel that makes it so difficult to write games for? Should linux try to copy DirectX maybe?

Mac Torrenting... (3, Interesting)

BMonger (68213) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066718)

Since I can't really use either version of the game on my Mac (which is fine, it'll let me get work done :) ) is it beneficial for others for me to download via the torrent link or not? Even though I can't use the file, once I've downloaded it fully I'd only be helping the upload bandwidth I presume...

If you like the work SplashDamage has done for this game you should go check out Q3F [q3f.com] . Just about everyone at SplashDamage started out in the industry by creating Quake 3 Fortress. It is a great mod and they are still involved with it. They will be releasing Q3F 2.3 soon.

They made enough money? (1)

Lieutenant_Dan (583843) | more than 11 years ago | (#6066737)

Won't this take away from the retail MP version? I'm not in the habit of looking into a gift horse's mouth, just wondering...

It would be nice if they released a new single-player campaign. There aren't that many good SP maps out there and I've really enjoyed playing the SP version of RCTW.

Tried creating my own maps, but I'm crap at it ...
