Aimee Deep Interview

michael posted more than 10 years ago | from the deep-thoughts dept.

News 412

LawGeek writes "Aimee Deep is probably most famously known as the highly attractive cover-girl of Madster (formerly known as Aimster). Since being involved with Madster (her father's business), she has had the opportunity to become more interested in legal and business issues surrounding the music distribution business and now blogs on the subject. Greplaw editor Mikael Pawlo recently interviewed the 18-year old Ms. Deep on various topics."

Calling all C programmers! (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6087577)

Why the fuck does gcc say that the function getwd() is dangerous? It doesn't return a string any longer than PATH_MAX characters and I've declared the string pointer to be PATH_MAX+1 characters long. Is gcc talking out of its arse once again or am I just ignorant?

Just goes to show, with open source software, you really do get what you pay for.

Re:Calling all C programmers! (1)

mako (30489) | more than 10 years ago | (#6087751)

Use getcwd(). Functions which do not require/allow the user to specify buffer size are being depricated. Your use of getwd() would probably not cause problems except from the man page:

The getwd() function does not do sufficient error checking and is not able to return very long, but valid, paths. It is provided for compatibility.

Best practice dictates using getcwd, however, if you are just messing with old software it probably won't be a problem.

I agree - this is ridiculous. There's a saying: "You used to be famous because you were somebody. Now you're somebody because you're famous."

Sure, we'd all like to see her naked and petrified with hot grits down her pants, and, like another poster said, lord have mercy on all the jokes that come with that name, but who on Slashdot could possibly care what an 18 year old poster girl has to say about the legal issues of IP?

I haven't even looked at the blog, so I'm talking out my ass here but...

who on Slashdot could possibly care what an 18 year old poster girl has to say about the legal issues of IP?

When did anyone on slashdot get such pompous standards as to what they read? God bless this site, but for Bob's sake it's nothing but a bunch of 18 year old (physically or otherwise) boys spouting off on the legal issues of IP and occasionally even more weighty topics.

If there's one place that M. Nobody Inparticular can feel free to spout off like an authority on any topic, it's got to be slashdot.

So - not to get too serious - but is the problem that she's a girl?

Cheers.

No, the problem is that the pompous rants of the average 18 year old Slashdotter doesn't make the headlines - at best they get a +2, informative. Why should it be any different just because somebody's got a set of boobs?

I get enough of the obsession with sex at practically every other magazine, news site, TV channel etc. ad nauseam nowadays. Even the computer games magazines try to sell a few more issues with a hot chick on the cover, for Christ's sake. I want to believe Slashdot is an exception. I come here to read about tech, and to find this nonsensical celebrity worship over here as well just pisses me off.

Ryvar (122400) | more than 10 years ago | (#6087606)

Back when her father was just starting Madster I met him and Aimee while the guy working behind their local CompUSA's Upgrades (read: Help) Desk (Albany NY region) - got to chatting about filesharing and some of the finer legal points (particularly the differences between what we do see and ought to see) of it with them.

I dunno, she just wasn't that hot in person . . . a little too much makeup. I honestly think her father encourages it - he seemed quite proud of her being all tarted up (and I say this as a completely amoral individual - it was a bit ridiculous).

Evro (18923) | more than 10 years ago | (#6087675)

Everything you think you know about aimster is a complete lie. See my journal [slashdot.org] for details. In short, she had nothing to do with Aimster, nor is her name even Aimee - that was a fabrication to evade AOL's trademark lawyers (which failed miserably, which is why it's now called "Madster" - her name is Madeline). Aimster/Madster is operated by a thief and a felon [fdic.gov] (his "business partner"). As far as I can tell, the "music pundit" site is written by a third party - probably a professional writer - with all website "comments" being filtered by "Aimee's" dad.

I find it sad that Greplaw would stoop this low, but since John is a Harvard alum I guess it's easily possible that he arranged this "interview" to drum up press.

As for the interview itself, I would like to know how it was conducted. It looks to me like it was conducted over AIM, in which case I'm sure John either wrote the responses himself or was standing over the typist's shoulder coaching him/her. If it was conducted over telephone or in person I'd be very surprised.

Kinda off-topic, but if she's 18 now, and she's been a "poster girl" for years...no, nevermind.

I worry about the sexualization (sp) of underage girls on the internet. I remember those "post pictures of hot chicks" threads at the Something Awful forums that had way too many underage girls. Perhaps an unspoken fetish?

Look, I'll be honest. I, like most other people here, have downloaded pirated music from the internet. Its seductively easy, and if you have a nice broadband connection, really quick. The sound quality on the 128k MP3 format may not be "audiophile" quality but for those of us using regular computer speakers, and not $6000 Bose systems, its plenty good. Just like with gay sex and open-source software, its easy to think that because its fun and enjoyable, pirating music is okay, and should be permitted. But thats the wrong answer. Despite all the half-baked rationalizations cooked up by piracy advocates, no one can really refute the truth spoken by the recording industry: Sooner or later, the widespread distribution of near-perfect digital copies will destroy the market for commercial recordings, and make the production of the very product consumers seem so eager to pirate impossible.

Just take a look at the music you download now. Sure, you may occasionally in a fit of self-righteous anti-commercialism download a legitimate "teaser" track released legally, or some free songs from no-talent "independent" artists who are giving away their wares because no one in their right mind would pay for them. But you know that almost all of what you download was recorded, produced, distributed, and marketed by the very recording companies you claim to despise, and would never have been committed to disc were there not the possibility of profiting from exclusive distribution rights to audio recordings. Every time you download a popular song illegally, you are decreasing the probability that commerical-quality music will be made in the future, for any price.

Anybody who cares about the system of intellectual property which has made the American entertainment and information technology industries so dynamic, and enjoys their fine products, from Windows XP to the "Lord of the Rings" movies to your new cell phone with built-in games and internet access, should understand the necessity of crushing Kazaa once and for all. We know that what piracy companies are doing is reprehensible, and moreover, as the Napster case and every successive suit against online piracy services has shown, illegal.

But Kazaa is worse than that. They have deliberately created an organizational structure, similar to the front organizations used by organized crime, to continue to operate and profit from their misdeeds in spite of legal sanction from every civilized country in which they have been sued. And like any crime ring, they have gone to great length to extract as much money from their "customers" as possible, using the enticing lure of pirated music to force paid advertising and virus-like spyware on the computers of their users. But in this modern era of international treaties and multi-national organizations such as the WTO, no one is beyond the reach of the law, and I believe that Kazaa can be crushed. They must be submerged beneath a tidal wave of litigation, until one day no internet provider will dare risk allowing them access. Any desperate tax-shelter island which offers them safe haven should be considered a rogue nation, isolated internationally, and added to the state department list of countries sponsoring terrorism. If the world can beat Kazaa, it will send a strong message that theft is wrong, and allow the content producers to lead the way into the beginning of the true information age.

  • she's really cute, pretty and good-looking
  • she's 18
  • she seems intellectual and bright (has a position regarding Internet rights, privacy, is pro-EFF and anti-RIAA/MPAA, etc.)
  • ...and yet she's single and needs to bring that forward by saying "Any takers?" and "I'm looking for Mr. Right." in an interview?

I don't get it. She's like the Slashdotter's perfect girlfriend.... Erm.... Well... BTW, anyone have her phone-number?

OK who let the blonde out? (1)

folks i read that damned interview and i gotta say that i am STUNNED... stunned that someone like greplaw would actually conduct such a vapid lacking-any-form-or-substance interview with what seems to be yet another airheaded bimbo... was it just me or was that interview painful to read.. i kept getting visions of Melody from Josie and the Pussycats (the comic book not the movie).. YMMV

the interview was poor, and i would agree with teh poster who said this was probably done on AIM with her father looking over her shoulder.. her answers to some questions are TOTALLY different from the style of her answers to others.. on the whole i would say that either a. her father was coaching her (which would totally take away the point of the interview which as she so rightly said 'is about her' b. she has MPS (in which case she needs help) c. she is playing a blonde bimbo when she is really a fairly vocal and insightful person (which i doubt, but if she is, putting forward her affected "dumb blonde" persona in an interview is insulting both to the interviewer and her audience)

if you want her you can have her, but i, personally, prefer a female of more substance than aimee deep

I just got done doing the boyfriend thing and taking my girl and her little sister to "Finding Nemo". We got back and I fired up the computer, and was browsing Slashdot. She was like "what is that site anyways" (because it is up in a browser almost everytime she goes to use the computer) and I gave the canned response "it's a site where a lot of us computer pro's come to discuss technology and what not. Nothing that you would be interested in". She has found my hidden porn archives twice already, and I could see her growing skepticism.

So I show her the newest story, hoping to clarify things, and click the link.....up comes a woman looking alot like her (my type: tanned, "hand sized", long hair....).....thanks a fucking lot guys. I'm gonna have to spend like $50 in flowers and shit now!

Could you kindly point out where these "pro's" have been hiding? Thanks.

And don't blame Slashdot for ruining your relationship. This site certianly isn't for people who have lives.

I guess those archives weren't so hidden.

First, to all those who are wondering why we should care what this poster girl might say: spokespersons are there to get the word to the people. Have you ever known a spokesperson to give all the nitty-gritty (geeky) facts? If she can appeal to the masses about what's going on, hopefully the masses will research more. Right now, IMO the masses don't even know what is going on and at the current rate can only get pissed off after the fact.

Second, to the spokesmodel. If you love Lawence Lessig and other copyright guys... you need to start paying more attention to their message. It doesn't appear to me that you have because they /ARE/ trying to get the copyright law changed and you said you didn't want to do that. The message you need to be getting out is the constant amendments to the copyright law with the latest being the Sonny Bono copyright act and the DMCA, are continually increasing the protection duration to extraordinary limits. Currently I believe it's 150 years past the original filers death. Lessig is trying to show that is insane. That is a detriment to the evolution of the collective creativeness of America and the world.

The latest ruling against Lessig by the Supreme court means that we need to show Congress this because the courts aren't going to help. Congress is going to continually listen to the cash flowing from the RIAA and MPAA until our voices raise up. That is what you should be doing.... getting the commoner to care about this and to lend their voice to the cause.

"Attractive"? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6087771)

No offense to Aimee, I am sure she is a nice lady and just not my type (as am probably not hers). That said: SHE is supposed to be attractive?

You don't get out enough.

Oh, wait... /. Pot, kettle... nevermind.

Highly attractive cover-girl? No. Pointless? Yes (4, Insightful)

WIAKywbfatw (307557) | more than 10 years ago | (#6087787)

Highly attractive? Well, that's open to debate. Let's just say that I wouldn't look twice at her but, from the posts I've seen so far, there are obviously some people out there who would kill their mothers to meet this girl.

Speaking of "girl", that's exactly what she is: a girl and not a woman. If a thinly-veiled opportunity to lust over someone who's not even out of her teens is considered "News for Nerds" or "Stuff that matters" then is it any wonder that Slashdot is often laughed at by more mainstream news outlets and (IIRC) blocked by some parental control software? And I haven't even mentioned sexism.

Anyhow, all that could be excused if she had something useful (informative, insightful, interesting, funny or any combination thereof) to say. But, clearly, she doesn't. What next: interviews with Cameron Diaz on her favourite websites?

Seriously, between this story and the earlier story about (shock, horror) a review of a mobile phone [slashdot.org] , this must have been a seriously slow news day. Personally, I think it's sad that the Slashdot editors haven't yet grasped the concept that publishing for publishing's sake is a mistake rather than a necessity.
