It looks like you thought it was German and the translation was funny. Which means you missed the real joke.

Re:Das Blinkenlights (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#6473303)

and also, the fact is that i don't know german and can still read and laugh at it (the original parent and the google/babelfish translation), while you were trying to make sense of it. i doubt the parent was trying to actually make sense of it with google and babelfish, but merely extending the joke. what you did was say, "That was the punchline, you laugh differently, so i will point that out." Which I guess is okay in it's own way, although retarded.

Euro-English (1, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 11 years ago | (#6470021)

The European Union commissioners have announced that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as Euro - English (Euro for short).

In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c". Sertainly, sivil servants will reseive this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replased with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm.

In the sekond year, the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20 persent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by " v".

During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst place.

Re:Sounds like trouble... (1)

I Love Soup (655061) | more than 11 years ago | (#6470157)

It was on one side of the building facing Alexanderplatz. It's a big square, and so there are no cars. From here was the best view.

Drivers on the street that pass in front of the building could only see it for a few seconds when they were right in front of it and also looking up. I doubt it was much of a distraction to them.

I know I was swerving officer.. (1)

I know I was swerving officer, but really I'm not drunk, you see my crack pipe got hot and then I dropped it, so as I was picking that up my loaded 9mm slipped out, and I had to bend down for that. Before I knew it I was over the centerline, but really you gotta believe me I haven't benn drinking, If my Parole officer hears I was drinking I'm in big trouble.

I took the picture from this site. I will show it to my friends and tell them "If you ever see me going to camping with a computer and a 21'' monitor, shoot me."

Seriously, i too love computer gatherings but isn't going to camping a little too much? (I think there is also a Userfriendly comic strip with this subject.)
I just don't understand why it is cool to do a Pc/Hacking gathering in a tent.. maybe i am getting old..

Hey, we've been doing this since before slashdot existed. And the point of an open-air gathering is that you actually get some sun and oxygen, without getting Internet withdrawal symptoms after a day.

Re:Going camping? Don't forget your 21'' monitor (1)

pavon (30274) | more than 11 years ago | (#6475341)

No, I don't see any appeal in having a lan party in the woods myself. Having crates of random junk in the backroom / trunk for spur of the moment inspired projects is half the fun.

However I would not say that camping and computers don't mix. I love backpacking for weeks on end. Now generaly I have never taken a computer (or anything like it) on these, because getting away from that stuff is half the point. But I have this idea in the back of my mind for if I ever get totally burt out of working - preplanning for a mid-life crises you might say.

Here it is: I get a seasonal job during the winter(say ski instructer) and save up as much money as I can. Then I pick up my laptop and backpack and head off into the woods for the other 8 months of the year, and just hike around and write free code. I would only have to come into town every couple weeks to get food, which could be pretty cheap.

The only snag I see with this is that it wouldn't be too smart to do it on your own, in case of an accident. I thought an online bultin board where people could meet up with people for treks would be usefull. Then just stay in an established trail-head camp for weeks when I couldn't get someone to join me.

oup, enough day dreaming - back to work

I've been waiting 20 minutes for a meeting to start, and I managed to commandeer an unattended computer with a Net connection for a minute.

This article has made my day. Hell, it reminds me of the time my uncle gave me a few bucks to design a "switch simulator." I cleaned out the LED supplies at 4 Radio shacks, and assembled a psuedo-random blinking light pattern. He needed something to fill in an empty rack at the data center.

For kicks it included a voice recorder chip, and speed adjust. A miracle what can be accomplished with a few NAND chips, NOR chips, a BCD counter, and a whole lot of solder.

Hint for kids trying this at home, tie the LED's to the supply (+), and let the discreet components open the return (-) part of the circuit. 60 LEDs consume a surpisingly large amount of current. Forrest E. Mims is your friend...

Announcing the OpenBSD presence during the CCC SummerCamp 2003(*)

(*) which will now be refered to as 'OpenBSD SummerCamp 2003'

All info on http://eurobsd.org/SummerCamp2003/

Hello,

You might remember us from such mishaps and hangovers like HAL 2001,
(see http://www.eurobsd.org/hal2001/), Libre Software Meeting and
LinuxTag... Wel, we are at it again.

OpenBSD will be present at the CCC SummerCamp 2003 in Paulshof, a small district of the city of Altlandsberg near Berlin, Germany.

(more info: http://www.ccc.de/camp/2003/index.en.html)

We'll be providing a roof over the head for any OpenBSD user or developer
interested spending 4 days in a field near Berlin. Available are tent space
for hacking, a seperate dark/silent tent for sleeping and lots of opportunities
to go skinny dipping in a nearby lake. We've been garanteed by Mr Muhammed
Saeed al-Sahaf that there will be, and I repeat, no rain this year
(contrary to HAL 2 years ago). In any case, we have 140 m^2 tentspace
to keep us out of rain *and* sun. And a stocked fridge with Gulden Draak.

If you are interested in attending this event, please register first with
the SummerCamp organizers using https://register.camp.ccc.de/

Second step is to register your presence in the BSD Tent, using the
web form at http://eurobsd.org/SummerCamp2003/register.html
