The onyl thing that would be better is if you could play old carts on a modern system. Tho playing mario and such with gc controller might feel a bit wierd.

They did release the original metroid on GC with Metroid Prime (though you've gotta beat metroid fusion to access it). Also, there's various emulators out with the X-Box.

The answer is the Hori Digital Controller. It is a gamecube controller that mimics the form and functionality of the Super Nintendo controller. It was designed for use playing games that don't require analog control such as Mega Man Anthology and Game Boy Player games.

It comes it two high fashion colors: blue [lik-sang.com] and black [lik-sang.com] .

Get Animal Crossing, and you kind of can.

Super Mario Bros. is hidden in Animal Crossing, and the GC controller feels a lot better than that awful NES controller. Don't let your nostalgia fool you. Ergonomic is better than blocky square.

Between the eReader NES series, all the games hidden in Animal Crossing (including Zelda, though nobody's heard of how to unlock it short of a cheat device yet) and certain games/microgames in Wario Ware, I'm surprised that Nintendo hasn't struck on the killer app for their GCN modem: downloading ROMs. I'd pay per-download and/or per-ROM fees in a heartbeat if I could legitimally download NES, SNES and old GB ROMs if they offered this, and I doubt I'm the only one. It would be fairly easy to keep relatively secure on the server end, I doubt there'd be a big market to pirate these older games (how many of us have seen pirated eReader cards or Animal Crossing GBA images?), and it's something none of their comptetitors can really pull off (short of one of them buying Sega).

Rig it so the smaller ROMs can be downloaded to GBA as in Animal Crossing, and I'd be in hog heavan.

for this the GC would need a harddrive... though if they did it, it would be awesome... Almost an iTunes Music Store meets nintendo classic games!

NES roms are at most IIRC 4 megs. I believe the GC memory card is 8 megs, so it shouldn't pose a problem.

Eight megabits; the largest NES game I'm aware of is Kirby's Adventure, which is a full megabyte IIRC.

Best Megaman weapon? (2, Interesting)

BTWR (540147) | more than 10 years ago | (#6955895)

I think the Metal Blade in Mega Man 2 was the best. It shot in 8 directions! It ruled!

What do you think? What about stupidest weapon? (I think Bomb from MM1 - it was too slow).

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (1)

CashCarSTAR (548853) | more than 10 years ago | (#6956032)

My far it was the Metal Blade. By a ton :)

Actually, it was the only weapon in any MM game that I ever used more than the main weapon. It really became my main weapon. 3 shots only took one bar of weapon energy.

The dumbest?

Flash from MM2 as well. Kinda silly.

ottawanker (597020) | more than 10 years ago | (#6956047)

Wood Man from the 2nd one sucked too.. was there any use for the forcefield thing whatsoever?

I remember Quick Man from the 2nd one as the hardest stage to beat I think..

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6956568)

The Leaf Shield killed Air Man in 2 hits (on Normal, anyway). That was pretty much it, unless you had trouble with the birds that drop those large eggs and create a swarm. It came in handy if you weren't coordinated enough to shoot the egg before it hit the ground.

Quick Man's stage was the best. Once you know how to do it, it's a blast to run through those lasers.

Best use for Wood Man (4, Informative)

QEDog (610238) | more than 10 years ago | (#6956798)

Yes there was! After beating all the bosses, in the first Dr Willy stage there where several spots with a lot of bad guys that jumped into you. I used to sit there, with the Leaf Shield, and the bad guys would just jump on me an be instantly killed, sometimes dropping goodies. At certain points you could do it and get into a 'pattern' where they would start dropping 1ups every now and then!!! I remember, I would leave it there, go do something else, then come back and, bam!, tons of extra lives! Ohhhh... the good old days. I hope they keep that little trick (exploit?) for this compilation!

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (1)

edwdig (47888) | more than 10 years ago | (#6957314)

The dumbest? Flash from MM2 as well. Kinda silly.

Nah, Flash was really cool against QuickMan. You walk into the room, and immediately use the Flash Stopper. That'll take off half his life. Then, as soon as it runs out, face left and use a crash bomb. QuickMan will jump right into the explosion and die. The Flash Stopper was also really useful if you weren't good at getting past the lasers in that stage.

The Top Spin from 3 was by far the worst. It was rarely useful, and you had to use it just right or you'd take more damage than you dealt.

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (1, Informative)

veritron (637136) | more than 10 years ago | (#6958447)

Actually, there's a trick to using the top spin. If you do it right after you jump while you're in the air, it won't screw up. If you press the button too late, you're screwed, but I find that the only time it messes up for me is if I use it while colliding into the enemy. I've actually used it to help me get through stages before, and it always works for me when I fight Shadow Man - it's no metal blade but, heck, anything that makes Shadow Man easy is okay in my book.

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6956587)

I have to agree on the Metal Blade. Although the Elec Beam from MM1 is a close second, especially with the pause trick to boost the damage.

Dumbest? Maybe the Bubble Lead. Or the Top Spin, which was rarely useful and way too hard to use.

Re:Best Megaman weapon? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6956789)

I mainly played Megaman II (anyway, this collection rules!)

I too loved the Metal Blade, but I think the leaf shield's usage in quickly getting through the Crashman stage made it the coolest!

Stupidest weapon? Well, from that game, the bubble gun :)

ReWorstMegaman weapon? (1)

focitrixilous P (690813) | more than 10 years ago | (#6960727)

Top Spin of MM3. I used the thing once, as it was the effective weapon against shadowman. It was te most useless thing ever. You jumped into enemies, spun, and maybe killed them, draining a good third of your weapon's power. Enemies with high HP usually didn't die, so you took damage. Terrible.

Mega Man is a very Japanese game. Capcom clearly wants to sell a lot of these in Japan, so it makes sense that they would only focus on the two successful systems over yonder.

This is not fanboyism. I'm an Xbox owner as well.

Re:I think I'm gonna call Bill Gates and... (1)

JFMulder (59706) | more than 10 years ago | (#6959627)

Sure, but I bet there are lots of NES owners who own an Xbox now and nothing else and are pissed at CAPCOM. I mean, what do they think I was playing when I was 8? A NES of course, like almost everyone else.

It's not as if Square decided to make a compilation of FF 7,8 and 9. People who want to play these games normally owned a PS1 and probably now own a PS2, so they could play the theoratically remake of these games. (come to think of it, I read rumors somewhere that FF7 is being redone in fact for the PS2).

But with games as classic as Megaman, maybe surpassed only by Mario and Zelda games, it's a shame that it's not released on the Xbox. After all, it's not as if there was less Xboxes than GameCubes over here, and it's not as if Megaman was popular only in Japan.

One can only hope to see these ports on the Xbox one day.

Re:I think I'm gonna call Bill Gates and... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6959777)

Maybe you should have bought a PS2 or a Gamecube, like an intelligent consumer instead of having a console forced down your throat by a company with very deep pockets but no great games to go along with their doorstop.

Capcom is a Japanese company, as such they are probably more concerned than they should be with sales in their home country compared to sales in the rest of the world. (Sure, they'd rather have it sell well everywhere, but it's kind of embaresing if your product flops in your own teritory even if it does well elsewhere)

As such, the first poster is probably right, the abysmal XBox sales in Japan may well have affected the decision.

And you only own an XBox, and not a PS2 or GameCube? What were you thinking? To the best of my knowledge there are only three or four worthwhile games that are exclusive to XBox, but there's a lot for the PS2 and GameCube.

Re:I think I'm gonna call Bill Gates and... (1)

JFMulder (59706) | more than 10 years ago | (#6960552)

What's the big deal with exclusive games? I play videogames, not exclusive games. Also, the reason why I bought the Xbox is because it featured the games I wanted to play. The are no other games on the other consoles that I miss right now, except FF : Crystal Chronicles. All the really great games right now in my opinion come out on all the platforms 9 times out of 10. And I'm glad to have an Xbox, because I can play Amped, KOTOR, Halo and Splinter Cell, games I own which are exclusive to Xbox (Amped), or on the Xbox months before it is on another console or the PC. The only console I miss right now is the Game Boy Advance, since it seems that it's finally getting a lot of original and interresting games and not remakes.

"What's the big deal with exclusive games? I play videogames, not exclusive games."

"And I'm glad to have an Xbox, because I can play Amped, KOTOR, Halo and Splinter Cell, games I own which are exclusive to Xbox (Amped)" (and Halo for all practical purposes) ", or on the Xbox months before it is on another console or the PC." (or years, and won't be on PC till the sequel is out most likely, see Halo again)

There seems to be a gap in the logic you're using. Clearly you don't mean that you don't play any exclusive games, and you furthermore cite several exclusive games as reasons for why you're happy with the XBox.

Assuming you make decisions about what games you play rather than just picking up the first game in the store that you don't have in alphabetical order, it's important to buy the console that has the most games you want. Since you seem to have done that, it's silly to claim that exclusive games don't factor into the equation.

As for exclusive or semi-exclusive games that the XBox doesn't have, off the top of my head there's Super Monkey Ball, Metroid Prime, BomberMan, Xenosaga, Disgaea, Suikoden, Kingdom Hearts, FF:X (and soon FF:X-2) Skies of Arcadia, Super Smash Brothers, F-Zero, (and soon Mario Kart, and as you mentioned, FF:CC)

Re:I think I'm gonna call Bill Gates and... (1)

JFMulder (59706) | more than 10 years ago | (#6961669)

The point is, I've only played these games yet since these are the only games I own right now. But generally, I'm not really into exclusive content, as my next purchases will most probably be Alias and X-Files: Resist or Serve and I'm thinking about buying a used copy of Burnout 2. ESPN NHL Hockey is also interresting. Games like kill.switch and Deus Ex 2 are also on my watch list. And Starcraft : Ghost when it comes out 5 years from now.

As for the exclusive games you mentionned, some I haven't seen or even heard of (Super Monkey Ball, Suidoken, Skies of Arcadia), some I never liked( Bomberman ), some I don't like their games anymore ( Kingdom Hearts, FFX, FFX2, Xenosaga ) since they decided CG was better then gameplay, one I'll go check out at a friend's house one day (Diagaea), some I prefer to play with friends but don't want to buy 4 controllers (MarioKart, Super Smash Brothers).
Metroid Prime I miss dealy, and FF:CC looks nice.

I'm surprised you haven't mentionned GTA3 and Vice City. Maybe you didn't because they're coming to the Xbox in a few weeks. I hate those games. They make people kill other people. (just kidding). I just don't dig these two games.

So if I'm going to play games that are going to be on all platforms anyway, I'm better off with the one who has the best graphics and sound. Net play is not a big draw for me, but I prefer the Microsoft offer, even though it has a membership fee.

The only exclusive games I'm looking forward are Halo 2 (obviously) and Gotham Racing 2. And maybe Sudeki.

Wow, dude, you like your Xbox a little too much. I own both an Xbox and a Gamecube (my roomate owns a PS2). Guess which one has been getting all of the love? It doesnt start with an X. KOTOR, Deus Ex 2 and Splinter Cell I own/will own for my PC. Anyway, if you feel left out buy a GCN for $99.

Re:I think I'm gonna call Bill Gates and... (1)

JFMulder (59706) | more than 10 years ago | (#6963572)

X. KOTOR, Deus Ex 2 and Splinter Cell I own/will own for my PC
The thing is I got bored with the PC. It's not that the games are bad, not at all. After all, I'm playing games that will mostly all have or already have PC ports. I just got tired of upgrading the hardware. Plus, I prefer controllers to keyboard/mouse (though it's true a FPS on a console would be more enjoyable with a keyboard/mouse combo). That's why I decided to buy a console and enjoy the hell out of it. At least with the Xbox I don't have to worry about driver issues. Plus it beats the hell ouf of having to buy a new video card every 18 months to enjoy the new games with the full settings, since they cost more than 250.00CAN$, the price of an Xbox. Sure Halo and KOTOR will look nicer on my PC, but at least I don't have to worry if they'll run well.

And come to think of it, it has the first Windows operating system that never crashed or BSOD on me! Woohoo!

Anyway, if you feel left out buy a GCN for $99
In a perfect world, I'd be able to afford all consoles. But I can't right now. And if I do buy another console, it will be the Game Boy Advance.

(come to think of it, I read rumors somewhere that FF7 is being redone in fact for the PS2).

hmm... from what I read, there's a possibility of a sequel (like FFX-2) to FF7 for PS2 or a later console, but redoing FF7 for the PS2 when it's still widely available as a PS1 game doesn't seem to make much sense.

I'd much rather see FF3 finally come to the US.

Between releasing Megaman & Bass for the GBA and the pending ability to play all eight of the originals (plus the arcade games I've only been able to play through MAME until now) on my GCN, I'm a happy camper. All we need now is an X compilation and maybe a rehash of the GB games an I can die happy. :)

I believe the article said the releases span the NES, SNES, GB, Arcade, and PSX... Megaman 7 on SNES, Megaman 8 on PSX. You got the megaman power battle arcade games... and most likey all of the NES and SNES ones.

I'm just glad they didn't release it one by one... i.e. the psx megaman collection >_

Do I still have to hold up on the second controller?

Re:Mega Man 3 (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6958066)

Oh yeah. That was fun. Up+A on controller 2 froze almost everything in MM3. And holding right kept you from dying in pits and let you jump high. Ah, the good old days.

I can only assume the games are emulated (the first 7, anyway...I'm guessing 8 can be ported), so the trick should still work, as long as Capcom lets the game detect the second controller.

Re:Mega Man 3 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6958956)

Regarding Mega Man 8: There's not too much of a need to do a full port of that one, either. The GameCube is a 485 MHz PowerPC, easily enough to do full-speed/enhanced emulation of PSX games. Hmm, I guess Sony would have legal reasons to prevent Capcom from porting MacSNES9X, so you're right about this needing to be a port in and of itself. :) Come to think of it, I'm sure Nintendo would also have something to say about Capcom using a SNES emulator for the PS2 version - after all, even Square did full ports of FF4-6 and Chrono Trigger for PSX, not using emulation. (The SNES ROMs were on the discs, but they were only used for storing graphics, MIDI data, etc. - game logic was ported).

OTOH the PS2 version of MM8 doesn't need porting OR emulation at all, just stick the CD image on the DVD and let the built-in PSX compatibility harware do its thing. Most they'd have to do is hack it (a la Rockman Perfect Works) to support new features, and "encrypt" it so hackers can't get at it and burn PSX-compatible copies of it.

Rockman (5, Informative)

Kyouryuu (685884) | more than 10 years ago | (#6957196)

Strictly speaking, you can find the Power Battles arcade machine in the US, though it is very rare. A MAME-compatible ROM file also shows that the game had full English translation. I've heard reports that you could find this machine at one of the Disney theme parks.

In any case, this is really awesome and unexpected news coming from Capcom. My guess is that this will be a compilation of the Rockman Complete Works that was released in Japan originally for the Playstation. Those versions, which actually released seperately, were exact ports of the original NES Mega Man games with enhanced music. Starting with Mega Man 4, all of the music in a game was remixed. Clearly, this collection will also include Mega Man 7 (SNES) and 8 (PSX/Saturn), so it will be interesting to see what Capcom does with these. In any case, I wouldn't expect to see a substantial graphical enhancement. Capcom had previous tried to make a "Mega Man All-Stars" in the form of their only Sega Genesis offering, and the balancing was entirely off. >_>

Re:Rockman (3, Informative)

Re:Rockman (1)

I'm guessing the Power Battle arcade machines weren't THAT rare since a local ice skating rink had a machine for the first one. I doubt its still there though since I haven't been there in a while.

I'm kinda disappointed that they're releasing this for the Gamecube AND PS2. If it was just the Gamecube, maybe Capcom would have gone all out and made the game cel-shaded. I think that woulda looked cool, kinda like Mega Man Battle Transmission.

If they will released Mega Man soundtrack collection to go along with it. I would love to own the re-arranged Mega Man 1-3 music.

I hope they will release it without "copy-protection," which unfortunately their last few releases have been. While the stuff is easy circumvent, "copy-protected" cds are quite "popular" in Japan(for example just about ever Final Fantasy CD is "copy-protected"), and I still don't want to buy or give support to their use of "copy-protection."

Re:I wonder... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#6958107)

It's not official Capcom remixes, but OC Remix [ocremix.org] has some remixed Mega Man music.

I think the cd protections are more popular (among companies that is) in Japan. There always seems to be a big stink whenever they try that here (which is a good thing, IMO). Of course it's likely a moot point, since a game music soundtrack has a fairly low chance of coming out here anyway.

1: I hope they use the Saturn version of Rockman 8, and not the PSX one (the Saturn one had two extra bosses - Cut Man and Wood Man, from earlier games in the series - and slightly better music) 2: With regard to updated soundtracks, here's hoping they re-dub the voices in Mega Man 8 with actors, as opposed to hoboes. (if you've heard the game, you'll know what I mean)

Mega Man 8 voice samples: http://www.audioatrocities.com/games/megaman8/inde x.html [audioatrocities.com]

Note: "Exhibit A" is actually not a vocabulary mistake in the script at all. The actor is saying the word "prohibits," not "privates" - he is just not enunciating properly, as a real actor would.

Now "Exhibit B" is a true example of the idiocy on the part of the American localizers.

Now, thanks to those clips, I remember Dr Light stumbling over words for no reason and called his enemy "Dr Wiwy". *shudder* Re-dub it, Capcom.

Or not, since they screwed up the game physics. Mega Man's jump doesn't arc the way he should in that version.

Zed2K (313037) | more than 10 years ago | (#6958195)

They mentioned upgrading the music somewhat but what about updating the graphics. I know the games are fun and all but instead of just slapping these onto a dvd and releasing it for $50 they should make it more worthwile and spend sometime updating the graphics somewhat. Like what Nintendo did for the snes mario allstars cart.

Re:updated music ok, but what about updating graph (0)

They tried it with Megaman, the Wily Wars, for the Genesis. It sucked. They remixed the music and changed the way the games played enough so that they seemed merely mediocre. It's strange how the little details in a game can make it good or bad. Anyway, I've been a Megaman fan from the get-go, and this is pretty interesting. I've played 1-8, and I've also played Power Battles, but imo Power Battles sucked. Too easy. Since every single one of those games was re-released on the PS1 with the exception of 7, you'd think this'd be a PS exclusive. Weird. I seriously hope all the graphics and sound are NES-perfect.

The graphics for the first 6 games were all very good, and I don't think they really need updating. In fact, the only graphics change to Mega Man himself came in Mega Man 5, and involved adding vents to the back of his helmet (this changed three pixels and was only visible in two sprites), so clearly Capcom thought it looked alright.

Besides, as previously mentioned by many people, graphics updates for the Wily Wars on Genesis were disastrous and destroyed the quality of play. It just seemed that the newer, larger sprites got in the way.

Personally, the only graphics that annoyed me were in MM1, and a few places in MM2.

Main thing I want fixed is the horribly slow scrolling when you go up/down a ladder -- this was fixed in 5, then went back to the old crappy scrolling in 6. Grr.

This is great (1)

This is some of the best news I've heard since Castlevania was announced for the PS2.

I have many fond memories of staying up all weekend with a friend trying to beat Mega Man games. Damn, the original sure was hard! I think that one took us a few weekends.

I'm very happy they decided to release this on the Gamecube as well as the PS2, although it's not too big a surprise. Capcom has been very good with GameCube support. Their games are some of the only must-haves besides Nintendo developed games.

Now we just hope for a Mega Man X compilation somewhere down the road...if your listening Konami, give us a sweet Castlevania set...the one for the PSX doesn't count.

It's Elec Man, not Elect Man (0)

About time! (1)

I was wondering when they were gonna get their act together and make one! Mega man Rocks. I will have to save my pennys so I can buy it. Not that I actually have time to play it with colege and all, but hey, for impotant things like megaman, you make the time. I rather beat crystal man any day then solve 5(x+ 10)= x+5 etc.... Any day....

I hope they didn't wreck the soundtrack... (1)

I really like 8-bit music, and I hope they didn't turn the music into some trashy remix-type junk,
because this sounds really cool. (except for the updated music part)

Capcom is pretty good at providing alternative/arranged/remixed soundtracks in addition to the original soundtracks on re-released games. In all of their fighting games that I can think of that also have remixed music, the original soundtrack was also included in its entirety on the same disc, and is often the default setting in the options screen. Even Puzzle Fighter included the dinky arcade music, which is great IMO.

Passwords? (1)

Does this mean I have to dig out all those fancy grid system passwords I have written down from way back? I hope they make use of the memory cards now :)
