GNAA has an interesting offer for you... read on! (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7061926)

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am Mr. Darl McBride currently serving as the president and chief executive officer of the SCO Group, formerly known as Caldera Systems International, in Lindon, Utah, United States of America. I know this letter might surprise you because we have had no previous communications or business dealings before now.

My associates have recently made claim to computer softwares worth an estimated $1 billion U.S. dollars. I am writing to you in confidence because we urgently require your assistance to obtain these funds.

In the early 1970s the American Telephone and Telegraph corporation developed at great expense the computer operating system software known as UNIX. Unfortunately the laws of my country prohibited them from selling these softwares and so their valuable source codes remained privately held. Under a special arrangement some programmers from the California University of Berkeley did add more codes to this operating system, increasing its value, but not in any way to dilute or disparage our full and rightful ownership of these codes, despite any agreement between American Telephone and Telegraph and the California University of Berkeley, which agreement we deny and disavow.

In the year 1984 a change of regime in my country allowed the American Telephone and Telegraph corporation to make profits from these softwares. In the year 1990 ownership of these softwares was transferred to the corporation UNIX System Laboratories. In the year 1993 this corporation was sold to the corporation Novell. In the year 1994 some employees of Novell formed the corporation Caldera Systems International, which began to distribute an upstart operating system known as Linux. In the year 1995 Novell sold the UNIX software codes to SCO. In the year 2001 occurred a separation of SCO, and the SCO brand name and UNIX codes were acquired by the Caldera Systems International, and in the following year the Caldera Systems International was renamed SCO Group, of which i currently serve as chief executive officer.

My associates and I of the SCO Group are therefore the full and rightful owners of the operating system softwares known as UNIX. Our engineers have discovered that no fewer than seventy (70) lines of our valuable and proprietary source codes have appeared in the upstart operating system Linux. As you can plainly see, this gives us a claim on the millions of lines of valuable software codes which comprise this Linux and which has been sold at great profit to very many business enterprises. Our legal experts have advised us that our contribution to these codes is worth an estimated one (1) billion U.S. dollars.

Unfortunately we are having difficulty extracting our funds from these computer softwares. To this effect i have been given the mandate by my colleagues to contact you and ask for your assistance. We are prepared to sell you a share in this enterprise, which will soon be very profitable, that will grant you the rights to use these valuable softwares in your business enterprise. Unfortunately we are not able at this time to set a price on these rights. Therefore it is our respectful suggestion, that you may be immediately a party to this enterprise, before others accept these lucrative terms, that you send us the number of a banking account where we can withdraw funds of a suitable amount to guarantee your participation in this enterprise. As an alternative you may send us the number and expiration date of your major credit card, or you may send to us a signed check from your banking account payable to "SCO Group" and with the amount left blank for us to conveniently supply.

Kindly treat this request as very important and strictly confidential. I honestly assure you that this transaction is 100% legal and risk-free.

Signed, GNAA president

PS. If you have mod points and would like to support GNAA, please moderate this post up.

Doesn't help when it can't be loaded onto a system which is locked down tight. Unless I commit a sackable offence (mmm - dual boot the beast, does happen but like I sadi I could/would get sacked) - boot from CD what works well on an IBM Thinkpad anyway that is designed for WinXP (yes IT has replaced XP with the SOE - WinNT4.0).

Re:Who cares (1)

Progoth (98669) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062104)

it worked perfectly in xine, without all the hassle of dealing with mplayer. actually ok I just tried it in mplayer 0.91 and it actually worked. I've been wrestling with mplayer for a long time fruitlessly. if I could even get it to play it would split across my monitors in fullscreen mode. it even looked better (xine had a green line at the bottom of the video). good job to the mplayer team. I'll still take xine and my remote and dvd menus though:)

anyway, on the topic at hand, I was excited at this trailer. I, like most everyone else, felt pretty letdown after reloaded or whatever they called it, but revolutions looks pretty cool. I don't know, something about that giant spiky head makes me all tingly inside:)

lets hope they can keep this one free of retarded sex scenes.

A possible spoiler in the trailer...

In the final few frames before the closing titles, a hovership, possibly the Nebuchadnezzar, is shown flying (or crashing) against a clear blue sky with a visible moon. Remember, the skies were burned during the war. Will the skies be cleared in the third movie?? Or is it just incomplete sfx?

OmnipotentEntity (702752) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062051)

I hold, because of the "amazing thermodynamics" and other inconsistencies, along with the kicker of Neo manipulating reality outside of the Matrix, that The Oracle's solution for making humans accept the matrix was to double layer it. Make humans think that they escaped the Matrix and they will no longer try, right? So the "real world" is really just a second layer in the Matrix. And the true use for humans is more than likely parallel processing on a huge scale.
But then again I may be wrong.

___________

Re:A possible spoiler... (2, Interesting)

Farscry (674981) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062071)

Another possibility is that the Matrix and the "real world" are both matrices, as you posit, but that Neo is in fact a program which has been developed to try to reach true AI, including emotions.

Perhaps the inhabitants in the matrices are either real humans used to provide virtual selves for Neo to interact with, or the inhabitants are merely programs themselves meant to push Neo into achieving true AI.

I don't know what the truth is either, but it's fun to guess.

Given Keanu Reeves' acting "skills", they'll never achieve real emotions.

Re:A possible spoiler... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062128)

Unlikely. The architect specifically said he was limited by perfection. Under your model the architect would have to be human, and it's very unlikely that in the future humans have grown to such perfection that they need to have programs build imperfect things for them, because they can't do it themselves.

No... (1, Funny)

starX (306011) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062137)

Maybe Ep. I had more action figures in the toy stores, but it was no where near as lame as Reloaded. I mean come on now; any of the redeeming qualities of Matrix were completely lacking here. Worse yet, Reloaded tries to cover up for the fact that it is a lame action flick by trying to insert some random ten minute banters about causality and free will. I don't think Star Wars ever pretends to be more than it is (maybe we really WANT it to be), but ten to twenty minutes of material excerpted from the Philosophy 100 Cliff Notes does not a thoughtful movie make.

At least Phantom Menace had some good visual/aural moments, and furthermore, it completely lacked 1) Keanu Reeves' ass and 2) Carrie-Ann Moss' ass, which are two things that I wish I had gone my entire life without ever seeing.

I'll take Natalie Portman any day, even if she is in gauche makeup and baroque costumes half the time :)

that's exactly what i did. why can't you do the same? why can't you simply search for it on google? for example the first results of "mplayer debian", "mplayer mandrake", "mplayer gentoo" points you in the perfect places... but maybe it is easier or more funny for you to complain on slashdot of something you didn't even try...

uyguremre (664199) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062097)

I don't know about the released version but you don't need to download faad codec for the cvs version; its already included. From the docs:

"2.2.2.8 AAC codec

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is an audio codec sometimes found in MOV and MP4 files. An open source decoder called FAAD is available from AudioCoding.com [audiocoding.com] . MPlayer includes libfaad 2.0RC1, so you do not need to get it separately.

"

A quick search on Google ("mplayer qt") leeds to a nice RPM package called mplayer-codecs-win32-qt-6.0-2 RPM for i386. Works just fine. rpmfind.net also lists a lot of mplayer-codecs-* packages. I'm sure there are also Debian packages around.

Re:dont be sorry! (1)

ralphclark (11346) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062134)

xine also plays it just fine on my linux box. I didn't have to do anything special, it just worked.

Mind you, I did install it using apt-get which took care of any dependencies (i.e. installing all supporting codec libs) automatically.

Beefy trailer, I am writing my thoughts as I download. I went for the big one of course and it is taking forever to download even with my DSL going full throttle.

83% and climbing, a couple of minutes until it is done.

I can't wait!

99, 100!

BRB :)

OMFG. That was sweet! I hate to be a person that swallows hype.

But, if the brothers W. can deliver on even half of the promised special effects it is looking like an E-ticket movie.

Also only one shot (maybe two, real quick) from the "love-fest" Jar-Jar angle in the entire clip.

Mostly looks like they are spending the money on special effects and music.

Works for me!

Of course I am a fan who was slightly disapointed by the second movie and am hoping for good things from the Finale.

At least they are having the grace to end it here. Unlike certain other producers I happen to be aware of.

Zog The Undeniable (632031) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062003)

OK, there may not be a player for Linux (which I assume is what the fuss is all about) but, for Windows users, surely it's nowhere near as evil as RealPlayer? At least Apple don't make you navigate pages of misleading adverts directing you to a paid-for version, nor does your video open in a window with more toolbars than Photoshop (you can turn them off, but all you wanted to do was watch a video, not configure a piece of software).

QuickTime has that annoying "Why Go Pro?" dialog and can hijack some of your file associations if you don't read the setup questions, but that's about all.

Re:What's wrong with Quicktime? (1)

Jugalator (259273) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062075)

I don't like Quicktime because the codec was never released as a DirectX codec on Windows, causing it to be played pretty much only on their player which lacks functionality, especially since it's not an open codec. The only exception I know is Media Player Classic, which is the player I use at the moment for several other reasons too. Their player also use a hideous brushed metal GUI. :-)

And every once in a while it nags me about registering, so I consider it to be nagware.

Re:What's wrong with Quicktime? (1)

Hmm, a clarification:

"causing it to be played pretty much only on their player which lacks functionality, especially since it's not an open codec."

I was referring like this:

"causing it to be played pretty much only on their player, especially since it's not an open codec."

... not that it's lacks functionality because the codec isn't open. :-P

Actually, it's the other way around. Quicktime (usually) works fine on Linux, where as on windows, you need to install that crappy Quicktime Player to view the movie. And afterwards, uninstall it, and then hunt through the registry for keys it "forgot" to remove, and finally reboot, to get the machine back to a useable state.

God I wish they'd pick up that license.....or if not that....perhaps the Battletech license. That's a license that's just DYING for the uber-hollywood-effects type thing seen in the Matrix. Well duh. It's god damn AOL Time Warner, they only own half the broadband in the country. And they are a huge multimillion dollar multinational company.

Sure when some lame hobbiest tapes a gps to his cat and then posts the results on his moms dsl, ya it gets slashdoted....but slashdot traffic is jack squat to real big companies. You think slashdot has the most traffic for a site on the internet? not even close...

Torrent is up Matrix Revolutions Trailer (XviD/Mp3) [emptylogic.com]

OK, how the hell does BT work? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062036)

I "installed" it, but there is no client. How do I find a certain file? The offical site is worthless when it comes to this, he assumed I was born with this info encoded in my DNA. For the love of God, has anyone creaed a useful FAQ that details how this thing works?

Re:OK, how the hell does BT work? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062050)

use ./btdownloadcurses.py --url http://www.emptylogic.com/suprnova/torrents/351/re v_trailer-tpd-avi.torrent to download the file.

No, no, no. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062063)

Let's say I want to locate a certain file (not the Matrix one, I'm crashing this thread). How do I do it? There is no client for me to search for it? What gives?

you click the torrent link in your browser, which sees the torrent MIME type and calls torrent to handle it...

Obviously, comprehending text is a lost art. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062103)

Then again, this is Slashdot, where no one bothers to fucking read, much less understand a query.

I'm not interested in that stupid trailer. I want to find a certain file, an ISO of a game to be exact. How the hell would I go about doing this? When I "installed" Bit Torrent, there was no client shortcut for me to launch to use in locating this ISO. How do I do it then? Cast a spell to Linus? Can anyone answer this question clearly. The FAQ is useless.

You are supposed to find a "tracker" website like suprnova.org, which host torrent files. Once you found a decent tracker, look around it for everything you might be interested in. Then use the BitTorrent client to download it.

Re:Suprnova bittorrent (1)

glassesmonkey (684291) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062057)

Suprnova torrent is this file:
rev_trailer-tpd.avi (32MB)
XviD @ 1600kbps & Lame-MP3 -q0 @ 160Kbps. However, still transcoded :/

FileRush torrent is this one:
rev_theatre_0x3839_640_dl.mov (50MB)

In case it is not clear this is AVI same as HQ mov (1)

glassesmonkey (684291) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062109)

XviD codec, looks about as good as the HQ mov
That should make all the people saying 'only quicktime' happy.

A decent player (0)

Just use VideoLAN if you don't have quicktime or mplayer.

How is Tuesday moments ago? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7062065)

Not to imply that slashdot doesn't have the media's most stringent fact verification.. but moments ago is the wrong phrase since CG Channel has a link to these trailers since tuesday (though it was specifically for the TV trailers). http://www.cgchannel.com/news/shownews.jsp?newsID= 1921

Iron Monkey543 (676232) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062066)

that Matrix reloaded was more about looking slick and wearing sunglasses than story? When I first saw matrix 1, they didn't need any of that to wow me. It was cool enough seeing some "hacking stuff" going on! Now it's all about fighting (which is abissmal compared to some Jet Li classics) and looking chic. I think Revolutions will probably do the same thing for the teen masses with short attention span, but it'll be bearable if they got some neat stuff in it that M1 had.
Put neo back in a suit and tie or sumthin. He starts acting like Trinity from m1 and m2. Stiff faced. I guess the matrix does that to ya

Not for me thanks (5, Insightful)

MrFenty (579353) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062072)

I'll pass on this opportunity. Don't get me wrong, I'll see the movie as soon as it comes out, but too much of the surpise element of Matrix 2 was ruined by watching the trailers and the various "making of..." shows on the TV.

It meant that when I saw the movie, too much of it was already known to me, so that some scenes (esp. the car chase scene) didn't have a gee-whizz element to it. That said, the playground brawl scene with lots of Agent Smith's was still a shock.

I'll pass and hope to be surprised/pleased at the movie theatre, rather than at home watching "the making of matrix 3" style programmes.

Good idea actually. I couldn't resist watching the trailer for Revolutions and now I'm a little pissed that they gave so much away.

disappointed (1)

mOoZik (698544) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062073)

I am so disappointed by the trailer. Sure, from the whiz-bang point of view, it's awesome. The action surely is there, but it cheapens what the first Matrix set out to do. That scene with the robo-dealies with people in them? C'mon, that's so cliche. I just hope the actual movie is less sh*tt* than this trailer makes it out to be. :(

dotpl (601535) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062090)

what does it mean?

I can't seem to be able to understand what the slashdot logo for the matrix is.

Is it a mouth(blue) with a tongue(red) sticking out?

please help!

red pill - blue pill

Re:Slashdot Matrix Logo?!?! (1, Funny)

Joel Carr (693662) | more than 10 years ago | (#7062135)

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Logo is, you have to see it for yourself.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no going back. You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Remember that all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.
