The Complete Far Side Archive

michael posted more than 10 years ago | from the boneless-chicken-ranch dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 239

Muddie writes "Amazon is carrying the complete works of The Far Side. Weighing in at about 19 pounds, it features over 4,000 cartoons, including 19 Larson made after retirement, letters from readers, and more packed into 1,250 pages in 2 hardcover books boxed as a set for about USD$95. My life is complete."

From their 'associates' faq:

Referral Fees and Payment Schedule
Our online reporting conveniently keeps you informed of the progress of your site by tracking sales in a variety of ways. There are many ways you can earn referral fees via your Amazon.com Associate Links.

Depending on the number and type of products sold, you can earn between 2.5% and 15% on the sale of products sold through your links.

We pay you by Direct Deposit, Amazon.com Gift Certificate, or check on a quartely basis.

Re:Referrer... (1)

Neophytus (642863) | more than 10 years ago | (#7303941)

Its anything from 5% to 15% per sale.

Re:Referrer... (1)

DrEldarion (114072) | more than 10 years ago | (#7304149)

If it's just a normal Amazon sale, 5%. 2.5% for anything sold by another store or person through Amazon.com (like Target, Marshall Fields, Gap, or Marketplace sales). I think you get 15% for direct-linked books over $15. $20 for every amazon.com credit card sign-up.

Re:Referrer... (1)

Nope, the referrer tag for amazon looks like this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/074072113 5/ dealmeinnet-20?creative=125581&camp=2321&link_code =as1

or

Re:Referrer... (0)

That makes no sense. Microsoft is great at innovating - taking other people's ideas and improving upon then. It is "inventing" that they have the problem with.

While it may have seemed "sneaky", in the end, what does any of us care? We don't pay any more and if it doesn't go to this guy it would just go to Amazon.com of "One-click" patent fame. I don't shop at Amazon.com for that reason in the first place so I wouldn't have used his link. People should provide some links to other shops.

Re:This article will come in handy now... (0)

Re:This article will come in handy now... (1)

Valar (167606) | more than 10 years ago | (#7304166)

Why do you care if it is a referral or not? It doesn't cost _you_ anything extra. Though it would cost you time to actually bother to remove the referral info.

Re:This article will come in handy now... (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7304178)

Because it does increase the price.. not immediately.. but the referer's money has to come from somewhere.

Re:This article will come in handy now... (1)

DrEldarion (114072) | more than 10 years ago | (#7304192)

There is no referrer. Try it out yourself - go to Amazon.com then browse to books and then the complete far side. It'll automatically put those "ref=ad_12" tags in there. If it had a referrer link in there, it would look like this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/074072113 5/ REFERRERNAME-20/

Where the referrername-20 part is replaced with the name of the site. For instance, for my site, it's dealmeinnet-20.

This money was given to me by my late husband [Chief M.K.O.Abiola] for safekeeping after the Presidential Election campaign. After his death in 1998, there was confusion in the entire Abiola family as regards sharing of the family assets and moreso, there is envy and jealousy as it was obvious that I was my husband's favourite wife, while he was alive. As soon as he passed away, coupled with the fact that, what i have and what is due to me might be taking away from me by greedy family relations whose reasons would be bothering on family tradition and ethics, I decided to deposit the money with a security company here in Nigeria, with the help of my late husband's friend who was a member of the government in power then.

I am prepared to compensate you with 15% of the total sum after the successful completion of the transaction. My son, Bimbola Abiola will be in charge of this transaction; he stays far away from the family Villa. He will be giving you more information as regards these transaction. He is my only son and we share secrets.

Please respond as soon as you get this mail and please it is important that you send your private phone and fax numbers to me so that i can forward them to the security company after an attorney must have change and legalize all the papers to your name if you are willing to assist me.

As soon as you assured me of your willingness to assist me,with the information i requested of you,my son will forward you all the necessary papers that will empower you to claim this consignment on myhalf.i.e:

Roadkills-R-Us (122219) | more than 10 years ago | (#7303911)

Instead of working the extra time to spend $80 - $100 for this, just buy the 5 volumes at $5 - $15 (depends on new or used, paper or hardback) that are already out. You might not get the extra 14 cartoons or the letters, but for the price difference, you get the extra time off (see other story). I love Far Side. One of the five best strips, ever. But no way am I gonna pay that much to get a few extras.

But the new version includes something like 1,100 strips that are not in any collection.

Also over half of the strils in the book have been very nicely colorized by various artists using watercolors, so even if you have the original (black and white) books, the new one is worth having too.

And the colored strips really do look quite nice.

Larson (1)

stratjakt (596332) | more than 10 years ago | (#7304150)

I used to have one of his collections, and there was a big intro written by Larson, talking about his ups and downs cartooning, and some funny anecdotes..

The best one involved the cartoon where a bunch of ants are standing outside the anthill holding a baby, while one screams "You idiots! We'll never get that thing down the hole!"

Apparantly when he first submitted the cartoon, the ants were carrying a grown man. It was rejected as being too macabre and grotesque. Just for grins he redrew it with a baby, and it was accepted..

Another story talked about the "William Tell's unfortunate other son" cartoon, where a kid with an enormous head with a tiny apple on top says "c'mon pop! shoot the apple!"... It got him sued by some Hydrocephelacy (sp?) orginization - the disease that makes your skull grow abnormally large..

There was the "what dogs dream about" cartoon, where millions wrote him to ask "Why is that dog humping that car?"..

In all, the anecdotes were much more entertaining than the comics themselves, of which I find 1 in 100 funny..

Far Side is no Family Circus, but it's pretty good. Notme and Ida Know! ahhahah

Did any of you guys see this [amazon.com] ? Why on earth is the leather bound version seven times as much? I wouldn't even want to open the thing at that price.

Man, Far Side is so old. Anyone remember Cheers?

Woody: I don't get the Far Side.
Cliff: Well you see... [explains joke]
Woody: What I meant was the newspaper in Hanover didn't carry the Far Side but thanks for treating me like an idiot!

I love the early Dilbert. I use to think my experience in corporate america was unique until I started reading Mr Adams strip - it was than I realized that my experiences were very similar to other peoples - either that or Scott Adams worked in the same building that I did.
