How to get rid of these annoying Slashdot ads #1 go to mozilla.org and get mozilla for your platform.

#2 install and go to slashdot.org

#3 right click on ads and select "block images from this server"

Slashdot has gone totally crazy with advertising. What they don't realize, is that by adding more ads they are making people more likely to block them. Get rid of these fucking banners and give us some text ads.

gilesjuk (604902) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413000)

DVD has the technology to allow you to watch the original cut of the film or the special edition yet Lucas will just say that the original cut wasn't his original vision for the film. Yeah right, the first film was nearly chopped around and turned into a TV series. The original Star Wars release doesn't have the Episode IV: A New Hope at the start either, that was slipped in later. The original versions need to be seen in the context of when they were made.

Re:Nifty. (2, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7413075)

...and so it goes. Hollywood releases a product that consumers don't want. Consumers go to video "pirates" to get what they want. Hollywood tries to shut down the "pirates" because they are supposedly selling cheap, poor-quality knock-offs.

Meanwhile, in the real world, consumers continue to be willing to spend more than the cost of the "official" DVD to get the "good" DVD.

Sad, really.

Uh, incidentally. Anyone know where I can buy a DVD copy of something that's out there on laserdisc? Nothing particular in mind.

Re:Nifty. (5, Insightful)

Liselle (684663) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412970)

Have people forgotten how George Lucas works? How many VHS releases of the flipping original trilogy did we have? Keep an eye out for endless special editions and reworks until the day you die, conveniently spaced out and with enough extra materials to keep you coming back every time.

On another note, I'm glad to hear he finally buried the hatchet over that damned Laserdisc business.

Re:Nifty. (5, Interesting)

ajax0187 (615355) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412994)

I'm just surprised it took Lucas this long to release the original movies on DVD in the first place. It's easy money - we'd all like to get the original movies on a nice digital format. Instead they wait nearly a decade before they rerelease. With a track record for milking franchises like LucasArts has, this seems to be a rather foolish missed opportunity.

That's easy. (4, Insightful)

RatBastard (949) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413064)

He was waiting until he had enough of Episodes 1 - 3 done so he could rework the real originals to correct all of the errors in the historical continuity he brought in with Episodes 1 - 3.

aussersterne (212916) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413036)

There are bootleg DVDs around, encoded from the widescreen LaserDisc versions of the original trilogy. They're actually quite good, all things considered, and cheap. I got all three for about the price of a light lunch about two years ago.

Check eBay, look around the 'net. Maybe if "unofficial" sales of the original version outnumber sales of the special edition DVDs, Lucas will develop sense and release the proper, original films.

or Malaysia (3, Informative)

WiseWeasel (92224) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413112)

I got the set from dvdmoviebox.com, Fed-Exed from Malaysia for about $30. Unfortunately, the quality isn't so hot, definitely not your standard DVD quality. There does appear to be surround sound, however, the image is interlaced, and the transfer and encoding are less than professional grade. They arrived in a flat document mailer, with the DVD sleeves and discs in a flat plastic sleeve, so you'll have to get your own DVD case. The image format is 4x3 letterboxed. The region is 0 (region free), and there is no CSS encryption (a sign of quality). In short, you get what you pay for, but I'll probably have to get the official set when that's released, just for the full DVD resolution and progressive image quality.

Well, I don't see why they can't do it like some other DVD's. When you start them up you get the choice of watching the theatrical version or the special edition. It would be nice to have the ability to watch the original or updated version and have them on the one DVD. I think Independence Day was one such DVD.

KDE IS DYING (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7412879)

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered KDE community when, recently, Novell bought the only Linux distribution to support KDE fully. Coming on the heels of the discovery that the hated SCO own a large part of TrollTech (controllers of the KDE project), this news reinforces what we've known all along: The KDE project is a squalid house of cards. The triple licensed Qt toolkit is a legal quagmire, and a minefield for commercial software developers, and now KDE's final commercial supporter, SuSE, is dropping it. The end is certain.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict KDE's future. The hand-writing is on the wall: KDE faces a bleak future. Things are looking very bad for KDE -- already Novell is training up its developers to work on GTK/GNOME and GNOME applications... not KDE. The only future for KDE is a few noisy and unpleasant zealots huddled around the dying embers of their codebase. They desperately try to convince themselves that it's not the end; that their dreams for world domination are still possible -- while occasionally howling in misery and frustration at more successful projects. A situation all too familar to those aquainted with the last days of the BSD projects.

Tell me that Han shoots first in the new DVD.

Wouldn't want send the wrong message (5, Funny)

IthnkImParanoid (410494) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413016)

Actually, he won't even shoot at all. Greedo will instead be killed by his own shot reflecting back at him. Every time Han gets in a fire fight, or is otherwise in danger, he will escape only through dumb luck and ingenuity cleverly disguised as incompetence. It will also be revealed that he is related to Jar Jar Binks from the later triology, a scene which was unfortunately left on the cutting room floor, but was always intended to be a major part of the story. Han Solo has always been related to Jar Jar Binks; Lucas definetly did not make that up later.

This is how he was meant to be portrayed all those years ago, but the technology just wasn't there. Han was never a greedy, violent outlaw. That simply wasn't the case. The audience just mis-interpreted the character. In fact, Han's original signature costume was a pink jumpsuit with bunny ears and gumdrops affixed across the chest to create a rainbow smile, a technology that didn't exist in the 70's. Now, with CG fairies buzzing around him, singing a merry tune throughout the entire film, George Lucas will finally be able to realize his perfect vision of the Han Solo character.

Re:Wouldn't want send the wrong message (1)

Kataklyzm (237583) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413072)

Sadly, I do honestly wonder what additional changes will be a part of the DVD release. So very many movies come out as 'special' dvd editions differing somewhat, sometimes greatly, from the versions we all saw in the theater. After what Lucas did with the special editions a few years back I am certainly even less enthused about this upcoming DVD release.

If we can't get the Han shoots first version hopefully we'll get at least the Geedo shoots first version an nothing else changed.

Re:Wouldn't want send the wrong message (1)

IthnkImParanoid (410494) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413142)

It may be the worst change, as it redefines one of the main characters of the film, but there are other annoying changes (for example, Han walking across Jabba's back, despite Jabba being the most powerful crime lord in the galaxy and having a bounty on Han's head. Imagine if someone tried that with Michael Corleone in the GodFather.)

I'd like the original versions, please.

In the original Han shoots first and is the only shot.
In the cover up, sorry, special edition Han shoots second with Greebos first shot going wide.

Re:Please, please please please . . . (4, Informative)

IthnkImParanoid (410494) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413124)

In the original release of the film, Han shot Greedo in Mos Eisley before Greedo shot him. Ergo, Han is a bold blooded outlaw.

In the re-release in the late nineties, Greedo shoots first, misses by almost exactly one baseball stadium, and then Han shoots. Ergo, Han is a lucky fool with slow reactions.

Lucas completely changed the introduction we have to Han in order to make it more "kid friendly," a la the walkie-talkies for guns bit in E.T.

Re:Please, please please please . . . (1)

bar-agent (698856) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413137)

In the original Star Wars Episode IV that we all grew up on, Han Solo shot Greedo before Greedo could shoot Han in the cantina. In the re-issued Star Wars Episode IV Special Edition, Lucas added several scenes, and changed that scene so that Greedo shot, missed, and Han retaliated.

See, he turned Han into less of a bad-ass smuggler.

Is this going to be the special edition versions or the original?

Having seen the original release in the theaters as a kid, I would love to have a copy of them on DVD, my VHS ones are starting to give up.

Heck, I wouldn't mind a six disc set with both. I think there's still a lot of people out there who like them in their original form.

Re:DVD (2, Informative)

Johnathon_Dough (719310) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412961)

The problem with the original form, is that Lucas has stated, over and over again, that they will not be seen that way. Lucas considers the current "Special Editions" to be the definitive version.
Supposedly he has even gone so far as to petition the Directors Guild for co-direction credits on Return of the Jedi based on the changes he has made to this film.
I still love the films, although many of the changes i find annoying. But Lucas is not going to change his views now, he has proven time and again that he could care less what the fans of the original trilogy feel.

I know now how the people in the former soviet union felt when they stood in front of the empty shelves. What again was the reason they didn't release it earlier? According to the laws of free market, there must have been no demand for it... Otherwise somebody would have delivered. But on the other hand, if somebody had a monopoly... a monopoly granted by the state... then they could create an artificial shortage...

I do hope that you're planning on including both the "old" and the "new" versions of the original trilogy.

Why, you ask? For one simple reason, and I'm going to type this very, very slowly to make sure you don't mess this up:

Han shoots Guido first.

Ah! No, I don't want to hear how Han isn't a bad man. Shut it, George - you made some good movies, but I don't want to hear it.

"Yes, I bet you have." BLAM! That's it - one shot. Deal with it.

And if you plan on including any new scenes, I will pound you. I don't want to see this:

Jar-Jar: No, it'sa not true! Messa is you father!
Chewbacca: Aaaarrrghhhghg!

Don't make us get the South Park kids to protect your own movies from yourself.

Bonus disk & outtakes (4, Interesting)

RobertB-DC (622190) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412937)

From a bit further down the page [thedigitalbits.com] :
Also, Lucasfilm has said in the past that there aren't a lot of behind-the-scenes materials available for the original films, so having a single bonus disc of extras (as opposed to three) would make life easier for them.

I thought I remembered quite a bit of info on various "making-of" shows that showed the original models, how they did cutting-edge special effects on a shoestring budget, and the occasional flaws that made it through (like a TIE fighter shadow where the fighter itself had been removed).

Of course, nowadays I guess we expect someone to be filming the entire filmaking process for the express purpose of creating the ultimate making-of special. When even a film like Monsters, Inc., where every frame requires painstaking design and hours of rendering time, has "outtakes", "deleted scenes", and "goofs". Soon, we'll have cameramen following the cameramen, so we can see "The Making Of 'The Making Of "Star Wars VII: Attack Of The Menacing Phantom Jedi Clone Empire"'"

You know... maybe, just maybe, Lucas & co. should spend more time telling a coherent story with believable characters, and less time worrying about how he'll look in the outtakes?

"...seems that they have TWO Star Wars television ideas floating around the ranch...one would be animation and the other - LIVE ACTION."

A live action Star Wars series...I wonder where in the timeline it will be based? Well, if it's made with half the quality of the movies, it should really be something to look forward to.

Here we go again! (0, Troll)

The anti-RIAA/MPAA crowd falls all over themselves to hand the henchmen of the cartel their money. What happened to principle? Oh yeah this is Slashdot...

I guess I'm the only Slashdotter left who hasn't bought a DVD player and hasn't harmed the defense of digital liberty by feeding the cartels.

Sad. Just sad.

You are very right, but most likely you will get unfairly modded down -1 troll because hypocrites love sweeping the truth under the rug.

Stupid slashdot niggers.

You know, you don't _have_ to buy CDs/DVDs from RIAA/MPAA groups. There's plenty of media available that doesn't fit into that category. Buy a region-free player, and you have a selection from around the globe.

Sad indeed. By refusing to buy a DVD player, you miss out on a huge amount of material that has nothing to do with the "cartels".

And on top of that, you feel the need to try and make the rest of us guilty, without even knowing if we've supported the evil you hate so much.

Go martyr yourself somewhere else, please.

Sounds bogus to me (1)

The guy's description of the Episode III footage sounds like something a fanboy would dream up.

Then again, this is George Luca$ we're talking about.

starwars is turning out to be bunk (0, Troll)

Man, I sure wish he woulda' left starwars alone after the "last 3" were completed.. These new ones have made a discrace out of the jedi.

I hope it's the *real* original (1)

tuxlove (316502) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412964)

I hope they are also releasing the true originals, not just the remade originals from several years back. I was not entirely impressed by those. There were some definite improvements, but some things weren't. They were far too busy, with all sorts of things moving around and buzzing that weren't there before. And frankly, they didn't need to be. I think Lucas was acting like a kid in a candy store, "Hey let's do this and this and this, because we can!"

I really want to have the originals on DVD so I can remember Star Wars how it originally was.

It's too late (1)

deek (22697) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412967)

At one stage, I was all for buying the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD, when it was eventually released. Unfortunately now, due to the near complete cock-ups that have been Episodes I and II, my attitude to Star Wars has cooled tremendously. I just can't view Star Wars with the same excitement that I originally did.

The irony of the whole situation is that, had Lucas released the original trilogy on DVD a few years ago, they would certainly have been part of my collection. Thanks Mr. Lucas. You've killed Star Wars for me.

Not quite accurate... (1)

psoriac (81188) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412974)

If you read the actual report, they only say that "the original trilogy is due for release"... they don't specify whether it's a theatrical or DVD release. Knowing Lucas, I wouldn't put it past them to try to milk the original trilogy in the theaters one more time to cap off the prequel trilogy.

IMO Old Star Wars sucked (1, Funny)

dougnaka (631080) | more than 10 years ago | (#7412975)

Star Wars was ok for the time, but talk about people ignoring bad acting for special effects. Now the special effects are the bad kind of "special" and the bad acting ruins the show. I bought the last re-re-release, and watched it once, I can't believe how un-entertaining it is. I mean, people whine about Jar-Jar and there you have Luke freakin Skywalker barely remembering his lines.

The best things to come out of Star Wars are the Star Wars kid, and the Star Wars rap.

Mmmmm that's a mighty fine Gin 'n Tonic R2, why don't ya mix me up anotha'

I can't wait to see what BITCHIN' new anti-technology legislation the MPAA will lobby for using the proceeds from my DVD purchase! I bet it'll be sweet! Maybe they'll outlaw photons!

I'm gonna pre-order two copies, like TODAY!!!

Jack V., this one's for you, you lovable dinosaur! Maybe you can buy yourself a computer and see what the fuss is about.. while they're still legal that is!! HA HA!

Learn fron the LOTR people! (1)

syberanarchy (683968) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413010)

Release ALL SIX as one big giant 20 disc set with extra features and the original triliogy and the special editions!

Does anyone watch Star Wars? (-1, Offtopic)

What are you, some kind of nerds or something?

Hey... (1)

Bendebecker (633126) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413026)

Weren't they already released... a long time ago in a galxy far, far away? Before the dark times, before Jar Jar!

Are we talking about (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7413037)

the old or the computer Jabba version?

I personally think the computer Jabba version sucked seriously. Computer Jabba didn't look like puppet Jabba and even Harrison couldn't fix that.

I would be dissapointed about the computer Jabba version.

Why now? (1)

prozac79 (651102) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413047)

This poses an interesting question... Do you think they will release the super-DVD collection with all 6 movies + extras after Ep. III is released? Will everyone go out and buy the OT and then go out and buy some sort of collector's edition when and if it's available? How many copies of Star Wars can you have: Official DVD, bootleg DVD, collector's edition DVD, VHS, LaserDisc? I'm tired of buying the same movie over and over again out of fear that I will be missing a window of oportunity to ever own it at all.

But.... (1)

jeffkjo1 (663413) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413079)

But when are they going to release the Star Wars Holidy Special on DVD??

*Original* or Original? (1)

Alcimedes (398213) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413098)

but is it going to be the one where Han shoots first, and we see Jabba the Hutt, or is it going to be the actual original?

i don't know that i want the stupid redited 20 years later versions. it's probably stupid but i want to watch the movies the way i remember them, not the way they were remade.

Great...now I can buy the same movies again (1)

Inebrius (715009) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413105)

Sure, they are in a different format. Sure, they might be cleaner and with better sound. But many of us have already purchased these only to have to purchase them again at full retail. And then we will have to purchase them again when they are released on HD-DVD. And then we will need to purchase them again when the collectors edition HD-DVD set comes out. And don't forget about the HD-DVD directors edition Episodes 1-6 boxed set. While I am a Star Wars fan, I find it hard to get excited about this when so much money is being made selling the same material over and over.

Episode III (1)

ConceptJunkie (24823) | more than 10 years ago | (#7413120)

... and Episode III will not be one tenth as cool as The Matrix Revolutions. Sorry, George. You blew it the second time around. If only you could have realized that while you are a visionary and perhaps even a decent writer, you are a lousy director.
