New Animated Dr. Who Series

CowboyNeal posted more than 10 years ago | from the rockin-the-tardis dept.

Sci-Fi 182

smak writes "To celebrate the doctor's fourtieth anniversary, the BBC and Cosgrove Hall Films are webcasting a fully-animated adventure starring Richard E. Grant. You can watch the first episode of Scream of the Shalka and new episodes will be launched every Thursday. Enjoy." It requires Flash 4, but also looks pretty damn cool.

Sorry! There are no comments related to the filter you selected.

Flash 4? (-1, Troll)

Can somebody post a version that works in Linux? Since I am using Lunix, I can only view stuff created circa 1996, i.e., 256 color animated .GIF files and ghostscript .ps files.

Thanks!!

What if time didn't really flow forward at all? What if it jumped around unsequentially with no pattern. Just events occuring for us to put a time stamp onto, to make us feel like something in this world is happening, when nothing is happening at all. What if we just moved around without the hindrance of what we call "time". All time seems to be is a rationalization of immense movement of the universe and its assets, based on a loose interpretation of a pattern being formed that it follows. This pattern called time. What if there was no pattern? Just things happening. Religion would say it's God that makes things happen, and makes it so. We cannot understand it because our minds are bound to a pattern that all things we experience must be sifted through, called rationalization. But what if we simply threw away this pattern. Just simply look at the events occurring around you, knowing that God had a reason or maybe that things just happen for no reason at all. You cannot ever put a halter on water. Time is a weak attempt at this. The truth is, that the real time, is un-harnessable and incomprehensible. We must only swim through the water, and not try to put a halter on it, to control it. Time is infinite, and unbounded. The true time, that is. Not the time in our minds. When we think time is always the same speed, that is true. One second is always 1.0 seconds long, and so on, but if we are simply interpretting events like I said, who says the events we assume to be happening at an exact predictable constant interval, are not slowing or accelerating in relation to the next system of time? Maybethat is called a dimension. But dimensions in that case would only be division of the universe and all average out to be a single value. Maybe this calue is the interval at which time flows at in our, and every dimension, based on our interpretation of events happening within out dimension. Therefore I think it would caused the destruction of all dimensions if one dimension collided with another, by attempting to rationalize each other's frame of reference. Maybe this is what Einstein meant when he said the universe would be destroyed if we were to break the lightspeed barrier. The light barrier, I reason then, must be the edge of our dimension, and if we attempted to break out of this dimension, the second dimension would either be destroyed trying to find an equilibrium between each other for event frame of references, which could occur, then this change in the two dimensions would set off a change in the next dimension, because the dimensions would stabilize each other and be interconnected to other dimensions. But if this would be so, then dimension would be infinite because TIME is based on events happening at a set interval and since events do not occur at the same interval, infinite dimensions would be created to rationalize this imperfection of vent intervals and therefore extending the universe made up of dimensions to infinity. Bu if there were infinite dimensions and an infinately expanding universe ... no the universe would not be expanding at all the universe is set and will always be the same in property. So this would mean the dimensions are infinately dividing dimensions in the whole universe, because the universe started with onle one dimension that was split infinately time, make them all infinately smaller yet equal, and when these two dimensions would not split, but meld, then they would be the only dimension that is different causing an imbalance, and then the dimension that is different causing an imbalance, and the other dimensions to collide and cause negative infinity on the dimensions shrinking and shrinking the total amount of dimensions down until there is only one dimension in the universe and this would be the standard. The utter perfections of rationality and predictability. It would therefore be perfect within itself. But we know that our dimension is exactly the same as this. So what says that these two entities are exactly the same? Simply another infinite division of an infinately sized super-universe/dimensions? And it being the child to another infinite ancestors? But once again if our universe was shrunk down to one dimension only, then the person or thing that broke the light barrier in the first place, would still be beyond the barrier even after the massive instant dimension shrink-down, causing him to break out of our universe into the next one, just like the dimensions did causing the massive shrink-down of the parent-universe/dimension. And of course this would go on forever becuase the dimensions were created infinately, and dimensions are simply made and do not have a creation time length because they are not based in time, so everything was created infinately and unbounded, so now it will be all taken away in exactly zero time. Impossible to comprehend. It must simply happen. There is no way to know by theorizing. The only way is to have someone break out of our dimension and, once again, rationalize the effects. Or you could just not care and live life? How about that.

9 steps to greasing your anus for Yoda Doll Insertion!

  1. Defecate. preferably after eating senna, ex lax, prunes, cabbage and hot sauces.
  2. Wipe ass with witch hazel, soothes horrific burns.
  3. Prime anus with anal ease.
  4. Slather richly a considerable amount of vaseline or other anal lubricants into your rectum at least until the bend and also take your yoda doll or yoda soap on a rope and liberally apply it.
  5. Pucker your ballon knot several times actuating the sphincter muscle in order to work it in.
  6. Put a nigger do-rag on yoda's head so the ears don't stick out like daggers!
  7. Make sure to have a mechanism by which to fish yoda out of your rectum, the soap on the rope is especially useful because that is built in.
  8. Slowly rest yourself onto your yoda figurine.
  9. Gyrate gleefully in your computer chair while your fat sexless geek nerd loser fat shit self enjoys the prostate massage you'll be getting. Think about snoodling with the Sarlaac pit. Read Slashdot. Masturbate to anime. Email one of the editors hoping they will honor you with a reply. Join several more dating services - this time, you dont check the (desired - speaks english) and (desired - literate). You figure you might get a chance then. Order some fucking crap from Think Geek. Get Linux to boot on a Black And Decker Appliance. Wish you could afford a new computer. Argue that IDE is better than SCSI because you cant afford SCSI. Make claims about how Linux rules. Compile a kernel on your 486SX. Claim to hate windows but use it for Everquest. Admire Ghyslain's courage in making that wonderful star wars movie. Officially convert to the Jedi religion. Talk about how cool Mega Tokyo is. Try and make sure you do your regular 50 story submissions to Slashdot, all of which get rejected because people who arent fatter than CowboyNeal can't submit. Fondle shrimpy penis while making a yoda voice and saying, feel the force, padawan, feeel the foooorce, hurgm. Yes. Yes. When 900 years you reach, a dick half as big you will not have.
All in a days work with a yoda figurine rammed up your ass.

Because of Yoda's attitude, I usually don't respond to his perversions, but this time I'll make an exception. For starters, the nicest thing that can be said about Yoda's lackeys is that they are goofy insurrectionists out to demonstrate an outright hostility to law enforcement. Already, some piteous Neanderthals have begun to fund a vast web of uncontrollable vagabonds, combative slackers, and naive malodorous-types, and with terrifying and tragic results. What tracts will follow from their camp is anyone's guess. Think about that for a moment. Simply put, every morning Yoda asks himself, "How can I fool the masses today?" The law is not just a moral stance. It is the consensus of society on our minimum standards of behavior.

It is grossly misleading merely to claim that Yoda simply regurgitates the empty arguments that have been fed to him over the years. Strange, isn't it, how disrespectful control freaks are always the first to trick academics into abandoning the principles of scientific inquiry? At least 80 percent of the people in this country recognize that he should be locked up. And if that seems like a modest claim, I disagree. It's the most radical claim of all.

Does Yoda have trouble living with himself, knowing that Yoda's wheelings and dealings disgust and infuriate me? In my effort to uncover his hidden prejudices, I will need to provide you with vital information which he has gone to great lengths to prevent you from discovering. I'm not going to say why; we all know the reason. Stingy feckless lowbrows can go right ahead and convict me for saying that I, for one, am morally and ethically opposed to his sentiments, but History, acting as the goddess of a higher truth and a higher justice, will one day smilingly tear up this verdict, acquitting me of all guilt and blame. His solutions are so narrow-minded that if allowed to go unanswered, their final cost would be incalculable. Why doesn't Yoda try doing something constructive for once in his life? Some people have compared impertinent hedonists to illiterate vile morons. I would like to take the comparison one step further. Let me close where I began: This is a frightening realization.

I pledge Allegiance to the Doll
of the Greased Up States of Yodarica
and to the Republic for which it shoves,
one nation under Yoda, rectal intrusion,
with anal lube and ass grease for all.

Personally I like the Curse of the Fatal Death where he goes through about 5 regenerations in a minute or two.

Richard E. Grant, rumored as the front-runner in the new Dr. Who series being developed by the producer of Queer as Folk. I wondered briefly whether his appearance in this meant he'd landed the role for certain, but a Dr. Who fan tells me that he'd been selected for this long before the new series was decided on.

(Amusing trivia note: Grant actually already has played the Doctor in live-action...for about thirty seconds, in the Comic Relief charity benefit spoof episode The Curse of Fatal Death [imdb.com] .)

You didn't specify which OS you are using so it is difficult to give particularly useful instructions.

But in any case, you ought to be able to simply copy the binaries manually into the plugin directory of your installation, if you can get it to install with any browser.

Re:Moz (1)

achurch (201270) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471608)

Depends. If you're on Linux, the Flash player seems to have weird shared library dependencies that always make it segfault on my system. Under Windows, the only problems I've had installing Flash are some weird interactions with Samba that make upgrades fail when installing to a network drive--uninstalling and reinstalling fixed it.

Who's influence on the Matrix films... (5, Interesting)

devphil (51341) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471491)

It occurred to me the other day that there was a 4th Doctor story ("Deadly Assassin") involving a computer-generated world called the Matrix. One sat down, put some gear on one's head, then appeared inside this world using a virtual body. If one's Matrix body dies, one's real self dies as well. The lone hero struggles against an enemy who can take advantage of the fact that the "laws" of physics, well, aren't.

No bullet dodging, but given that the BBC's special effects budget was about the price of a cheeseburger, that should come as no surprise.

There's also an episode called "Trial of a Time Lord", with Colin baker as the Doctor. The last chunk of it involves entering the 'Matrix'. It was a little different, though. In this ep, the Matrix was a repository of all Time Lord knowledge. Or something like that. Imagine the universe having a black box recording everything that happens, then having a Holodeck to walk into and witness events that occured. It was taken over and the laws of physics were messed up, etc.

Though I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this episode had significant influence on the Matrix movies, it'd be difficult to say it was more than simply inspired.

The Matrix (at least, the Amplified Panatropic Net) was also a knowledge repository in the previous stories. In fact, I think it's been mentioned in that role in every story set on Gallifrey, even if only a brief scene or two.

I'll take the cheeseburger-priced effects combined with the decent story any day.

My brain can forgive the cheesy fx, sets, etc... in favour of a plot.

It can't forgive high-end fx that are just there to be there.

Re:Who's influence on the Matrix films... (1)

doubleyou (89602) | more than 10 years ago | (#7472093)

Actually, I think it's more likely that The Matrix films were more directly influenced by William Gibson's fiction, which refers to the fully-emersive VR global communications net as The Matrix. Though arguably, Doctor Who did it first. *shrug* I'm just saying that the idea is far from new, not that you were saying it was...

The theme! (2, Interesting)

I guess I'm way out of the loop. What have they done with the theme song? It's all... techno. BTW, does anyone know where I can legally get a Dr. Who theme as an MP3?

Or you could listen to "Doctor?" from Orbital's album "The Altogether" for the truly techno'ed version.

Re:The theme! (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7471681)

There are a number of mixes/arrangmenets of the theme freely and legally available at whomix.mutagene.net [mutagene.net] . They aren't the original Delia Derbyshire version and none of them try to be, but I humbly suggest that they include some of the better remixes of theme made. Certainly better, for my money, than the mix used in Scream of the Shalka.

Mind you, the BBC is releasing a Doctor Who remix album in 2004 featuring 808 State, the Orb, Lemon Jelly and a bunch of other artists. That might up the bar a bit.

I never watched them either - the theme music at the beginning was just too scary.

The deep, repetitive da-na-na-nnn, da-na-na-nnn, ... and that whiney twangy thing just freaked me out and I had to change the channel.

From what I've heard, the props were all so bad that the theme was actually the scariest part of the show. Maybe I should have hung around.

crabpeople (720852) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471992)

its clearly the best show. you have a time traveller who goes around solving other peoples problems and dependning on which one you watch he has a different personality. but always he is knowledgeable and intelligent moreso than everyone else. he also frequently changes nice looking [shillpages.com] english [freeserve.co.uk] hoes [pipex.com] . might i add, also from all time periods.

of course the 4th and 7th are most memerable to me. maybe the 2nd one was good too.

Doctor: 'Tell me Marshal, if you had this ultimate deterrent, what would you do?'

Marshal: 'Thank you.'

Why FLASH? (2, Insightful)

Why is all this crap done in Flash or Shockwave or whatever? Don't they realize that the majority of their viewers (geeks) don't have Flash installed because it's just some method for advertisers to make us all sick?

Would it ruin anything if one watched these new animated eps without seeing *any* of the original series?

Re:What if we never saw the 1st? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7471959)

Not at all. Each Doctor Who serial is an entirely self-contained story. There is a rough continuing storyline, but it isn't really that complicated or necessary for enjoyment of the show. The true beauty of DW is the low-tech-ness of it. I most especially love the earlier episodes which were done very theatrically (and could easily be redone on a stage).

Done before with Douglas Adam's script (4, Informative)

NaugaHunter (639364) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471757)

Here [bbc.co.uk] - all six episodes.

I'd never really watched Dr. Who before, but I enjoyed this - probably because of Professor Chronotis and good ol' Adam's wit. I'll watch the newer ones when I get a chance, but I figured I'd point this out for those the Adam's fans that didn't see the link on the bbc page.

(There's also another 6 episodes called 'Real Time', talking about the return of Cyber Men. Probably an inside Dr. Who thing - if you've never seen Dr. Who but are interested and are a Douglas Adam's fan his series is probably the best introduction.)

BBC owns the Net (5, Interesting)

Zeromous (668365) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471766)

What can I say other than it seems to me the BBC has an amazing handle on the Internet, and how to use it to its fullest potential. It seems every week something prompts me to say out loud: "BBC Rules!".... ..In fact, so much more than any other pre-internet broadcaster I have seen. "Major Kudos", its nice to watch some Doctor for the first time in a long time.

see? flash doesn't always suck! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7471768)

this is a good example of a good use of Flash. So many people complain about how they hate flash and it's the worst thing to do to a web design, but it's really just a tool, it's only bad if used incorrectly.

Although I do agree about the fact that it requires flash 4 seems a little harsh, i mean, the original series would have killed to be able to have the original flash (flash 1?) on their special effects team. just think of all the cool text morphing one could do!

I watched Dr. Who when I was kid in the 80s, I loved it then, and I still love it. Mostly I love the way they keep the villians/monsters in the dark for the first part of the show. I also enjoyed all the cryptic comments by the Doctor. :) DR. WHO ROCKS! :D

Awful animation (0, Flamebait)

Kris_J (10111) | more than 10 years ago | (#7471913)

It's a shame more traditional cell animation is giving way to this paperdoll-style flash crap. They should just do a radio play and distribute it as Ogg Vorbis files.

Re:Awful animation (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7471951)

IMHO it's a followon from cheap anime. It sells as much as good quality animation, it carries a story/gets watched just as much by about 90% of the population who couldn't give a crap, and so it filters on up to everything, even legends like Dr.Who.

(I fully expect to be modded down now after dissing anime)

Of course, crappy animation in a Dr.Who episode is also only a followon from the shitty special effects of the live action episodes :)
