Why do we have to keep hearing about that pasty little plain, 13 year old BSD chick [freebsd.org] ? I'm sure she's the hottest thing these guys [nylug.org] have seen, but come on!

At least Natalie Portman [grits.com] was worth trolling for, and appears to be above the age of consent. She may have even seen the sun once or twice!

Is the FreeBSD chick only 13? w00t! I'm gonna hit on her at the next BSDcon like an unlatched screen door in a tornado.

Better Than The Simpsons? (1)

Slider451 (514881) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515043)

Never got into this show. How is it better than the Simpsons or King of the Hill?

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (4, Insightful)

miketang16 (585602) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515085)

You've obviously never watched it then... Family Guy is levels upon levels above King of the Hill, and in my opinion actually better than the Simpsons too. It mixes an awesome blend of 'stupid' humor with underlying intelligent themes.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (4, Insightful)

macshune (628296) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515153)

It's also good because it's one of the only times in life when you get rewarded for watching shitloads of tv shows and commercials during the 70s, 80s & 90s (as in, you get the jokes:).

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7515094)

It's fucking hilarious. Some jokes are contrived and drag on, but otherwise it has been consistently funny for the first three seasons.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7515109)

It's funnier. Far, far funnier than King of the Hill, and averaging funnier than recent seasons of the Simpsons.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (4, Informative)

Andorion (526481) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515129)

Family guy has more witty comedy packed into a half hour than any other show I've seen... it's offensive at times (Stewie often plots to kill his mom, and unlike Homer who's funny because of his ignorant, Peter is ignorant and often often *mean*). Still, if that sort of humor doesn't bother you there are some real gems in each episode, real "laugh out loud" moments, which is rare nowadays.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (1)

ericspinder (146776) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515154)

You need to watch it on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) at 11:30 pm. It was an orginal, just like "The Simpson's" was... Like on the recent Simpson's" Holloween special Homer became Death. To paraphrase from South Park "Family Guy did it".

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (1)

GigsVT (208848) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515221)

Heh, but Family Guy did rip off the Simpsons a lot. Remember the gag when Peter was trying to eat popcorn and the bird kept grabbing it? That's stright up simpsons rip-off, homer did the same exact gag. There's a lot of stuff like that, especially a lot of the simple gags.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7515171)

King of the HILL?! Sure, asking how much better it is than then Simpsons (well, the last few seasons anyway) is a fair question. But King of the Hill?! Fam. Guy is a million times funnier.

Re:Better Than The Simpsons? (2, Insightful)

Cornelius the Great (555189) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515223)

Family Guy actually utilizes the same basic premise behind the Simpsons, and borrows quite a bit from the show:
- a show about a family with 3 kids
- the father is a moron
- the wife is usually the sane/careful one
- setting is in a fictional American town, although in Family Guy, we at least know the state (Rhode Island)
- the children are a boy, girl, and a baby
- the father spends a lot of time at the bar

There's a few others. The biggest differences in the two have to deal with the fact that the family pet (Brian, a walking, talking, alcoholic mutt) is personified, as well as the baby (Stewie, who has napoleonic tendencies) Needless to say, I've enjoyed both shows enough to consider myself a big fan of each.

Not that hard to be better (0)

I realize that this may be considered heresy on slashdot (hence the fact that I'm posting anonymous), but I honestly HATED that piece of crap. I admit to having chuckled a few times during it, but frankly I just don't miss it. Is it some kind of law that every American cartoon has to center around the foibles of some idiot? (Homer Simpson, The Family Guy [whatever his name was], Fred Flintstone, etc.)

Frankly, I see enough idiots on TV already, even in the news...

Pick a day, any day... (5, Insightful)

ericspinder (146776) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515048)

I love that show, I saw every epoisode on Fox that I could catch, and I watch ever one that I can on adult swim. As I remember it fox keep moving the show from night to night. Sometimes showing it sometimes not, it really didn't make a log of sense. It was one of those shows that you couldn't depend it being on. I am glad that Fox is reconsidering.

EXACTLY. Fox mismanaged those shows... (1)

Gadgetfreak (97865) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515196)

they kept switching the night, and wondered why people didn't watch it. And they put Futurama on at 7 on Sundays, and then ran football late without showing a re run!
I really liked Family Guy, and it made me laugh more than anything but, Futurama is the show I will miss the most. It was really shaping up to be excellent.

Re:Pick a day, any day... (5, Insightful)

Doomstalk (629173) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515267)

Fox loves to do this. Especially with shows they air around the same time as The Simpsons, which is by far their most popular show. They like to use those slots to show off whatever new series they feel like hawking that week, causing the musical slots effect you're talking about. That and football games that go into overtime generally mean the kiss of death for whatever show is unlucky enough to be there. The sad part is that they kill great shows to promote ones with far less lasting power.

The question is (5, Insightful)

BizDiz (723499) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515052)

what kind of "restrictions" are they gonna place on it?

The show got cancelled more because of controversy than lack of ratings. It's good to see Fox selling out on this due to response (whoddathunkit? Fox?), but I hate for the Family Guy people to sell out too.

In some ways it was good that it went out on top; Look at the Simpsons now; yech.

wo1verin3 (473094) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515146)

Actually according to the article it was ratings dwindling. I mean if SouthPark can air on TV, Family Guy should have nothing to worry about. This is Fox after all.

Re:The question is (1)

GigsVT (208848) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515160)

The simpsons is still pretty good... sometimes at least. That episode they sued themselves over, that one in particular was funny and edgy.

The ANSWER is... (4, Insightful)

StandardCell (589682) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515210)

(from the USA Today article) "...new episodes could end up going directly to Cartoon Network."

That would solve the controversy problem since Cartoon Network is a cable channel.

ziggy_zero (462010) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515059)

Maybe they could save us all a little time and release them straight to DVD instead of on TV first....If I remember correctly part of the reason they got cancelled was they gave it a shitty timeslot so nobody watched it.

Re:Hmmmmm (1)

dvdave (175509) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515262)

I agree. I think it was on at least three different nights, finally ending up on Thursday where it (big surprise) died. They'll probably do something similar and put it on Friday at 9pm where it will last a few weeks, being allowed low numbers because no one watches tv on Friday, and be pulled by the following sweeps period.

I'd have thought Comedy Central (contracts aside) could have picked it up. Maybe it was budget reasons, but I see FG as a great match with South Park or most of their other 10pm shows.

I can believe that. There were a lot of duds.

But give it a chance. Once in a while there's a brilliant episode. Like the one that ends with Brian and a dying elderly friend experiencing a speeded-up virtual-reality life together. Weird, SF-ish, and oddly touching.

The Night Watchman (170430) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515168)

what the "banned episode" is about? too lazy to google ;-)

It's called "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", and it's about Peter getting into financial trouble and making a wish for a Jew to come save him, because he thinks all Jewish people are financial geniuses. I thought it was relatively tame compared to some of the other things they've done, particularly the "Special People's Games" episode. In any case, the episode is available on DVD Volume 2, and it's a joy to watch.

Re:Can anyone tell me (0)

SlamMan (221834) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515257)

Yup, and since Comedy Central aired it, we should have nothing to worry about when it comes to what else they'll air. Hell, they aired the Christopher Reeves South Park episode.

Re:Can anyone tell me (1)

molarmass192 (608071) | more than 10 years ago | (#7515200)

It certainly wasn't the raciest episode ever, it just dealt with Jewish stereotypes about being good with money, smart, etc. Peter uses the word "Jew" quite a bit so that might be the reason why it ended up getting banned. In the commentary on the DVD even Seth admits he was surprised it didn't get to air.

The Gnome Translate-o-matic (Socre:5, Funny) (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7515100)

vEver since Gnome 2.4 was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots
who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide
to some of their claims, and what they really mean.

Unlike KDE, Gnome is free
Translation : GPL is freerer than LGPL. LGPL allows corporations like Novell
and Sun to have propeitry forks and lock away their changes from the user. Now
that Novell has taken over Ximian you can expect Gnome to get put under
corpirate lock. With KDE you have the choice, you either PAY UP or pay with
your source code.

Nautilus is much better than konqueror.
Wrong, if your using nautilus for anything more than a simple finder clone you
can forget it. No split screen, no ioslaves and forget about being able to
have a decent file dialog, not to forget that it is as unstable as hell and is
STILL slow on >3 Ghz machines.

Gnome is easier to use
Yep, nothing like using gconf-editor to edit all except the most trivial of
settings. Want tear off menus? Want a useable file dialog? You won't find it

Gnome has eye candy
Yes, my pirated Win32 fonts with the patent infringing font renderer. Bit
stream vera sans looks like Tahoma put through a shreadder! Of course I still
reboot into windows to print using "Comic Sans MS.

Gnome has a new web browser
Yawb! Along with Galeon, mozilla, thunderbird, konqueror, atlantis, lynx,
netscape and w3m. Yes I need another browser! Not to mention that its got a
religiously offensive name and it dosen't allow bookmark folders. It also
crashes like a crazy! Apple chose khtml for a REASON! its stable and light!

For newbies, Gnome is the ideal choice
Despite the fact that the only mainstream Gnome based distro has been EOL'd,
and all the newbie distros such as Mangadrake, Lindoze, $u$E, Lycoris,
Xandroze, Gentoo use kde default, the Local unix geek showed me Debian, which
installed Gnome 1.4 by default, so it must be good if he uses it.

You KDE guys must be sick of the K
Our G's and monkeys are SO MUCH better, gedit, glib, gconf, bobono, ghex,
gless, same-gnome.

Gnome is themeable
Yep, choose from High, low and medium contrast, default, and clean ice. Wan't
to change the colour scheme? USE GCONF NOOB, plus if you complain about it we
will tell you to fuck [gnomedesktop.org] off [gnomesupport.org] and go back to Windows [apple.com] or KDE [kde.org] .

Gnome has multimedia framework
Its a kludge of esd combined with broken xine libraries. No wonder it crashes
all the time and dosen't work on 95% of video files

My Gnome work station
My 1.1Ghz Packard Bell box my mum bought for me from PC world, that is made of
made to break components, but it has a GEFORCE RADEON 9000 card, so it must be
good.On the other hand, no-one (well, nearly no-one) is suggesting that GTK+
is a replacement for Qt...

Gnome allows mac like operation.
x86 compatible 1 button mice are almost impossible to find, and it dosen't copy
the whole macbar concept. Not to even mention their auto apply implementation
is broken and dangerous! Plus if they did actually come anywhere close to
copying the Mac the C&D letters would come flying up their asses.

Gnome is GNU software.
gnu/Yay, gnu/gnome gnu/for gnu/my gnu/debian gnu/linux gnu/500mhz /gnu/celeron
gnu/packard gnu/bell gnu/box.

Inspired by the gentoo translate-o-matic.

Especially, that one time, where the captain was standing over this evil killer guy, and he was like "If I let you go, you half to leave me alone, and the evil guy was like "I'll hunt you with my last breath", and the captain guy kicked him and he flew back into this, like, jet intake on his space craft and got all killed.

How annoying, first they cancel the show despite the LARGEST viewer response of any cancelled program. Then they leave it cancelled just long enough so it will suck by the time they put it back on the air. And then they claim it was a "late-bloomer". Fact is they realized they fsck'd up when they looked at the DVD sales and some exec wanted an explaination.

Fox Television Entertainment Group chairman Sandy Grushow said a decision is expected soon and called the series a late-blooming phenomenon that may have aired before its time.

My favorite episode is where the dad gets cash for "slavery reparations", and the brother spends the money to make his house look like Pee Wee's Playhouse, complete with Chairy and Globe-y.

This is an important warning to all slashdotters. CmdrTaco has been luring
people (mainly underage males) into the slashdot compound to eat his "special

You may be wondering what CmdrTaco's "special taco" is. You will be wishing
that you hadn't been wondering after you finish reading this post. To make
his "special taco", CmdrTaco takes a taco shell and shits on it. He then adds
lettuce, takes out his tiny withered dick (otherwise known as his
"Commander"), puts his "special taco sauce" on it which means he jacks off on
the taco, and adds a compound to make the person who eats the taco
unconcious. Of course, the compound does not make the person unconcous until
the taco is fully eaten. Thus CmdrTaco force feeds the taco to the
unsuspecting victim. After all, who would knowingly eat shit and CmdrTaco's

After the victim is unconcous, he is held against his will and used for
CmdrTaco's nefarious homosexual purposes. This includes shoving taco shells
up the victim's ass, taco snotting, and getting JonKatz involved. Trust me,
you do not want JonKatz anywhere near your unconcious body. Also, rumor has
it CmdrTaco is looking for a new goatse.cx guy. Don't let it be you!!!!!

The last thing you may be wondering is how this goes along with "taco
snotting", or what "taco snotting" is. George WIPO Bush and The WIPO Troll
have been doing considerable work explaining what "taco snotting" is. Please
see his FAQ on "taco snotting" which can be found as a -1 rated comment on
most slashdot stories.

Please, if CmdrTaco offers you his "special taco", RUN LIKE HELL!!!!!!!!

The baby with the English accent is pure comic genius; the way they combine the mature cynic and infant mentality is utterly amazing. I just don't see anything (even Simpsons or Futurama) that compares with the high points on that show.

I am particularly fond of the scene where he tells Peter to excuse him so he can go find something to strike him with. Classic.

I hated Family Guy when it first came out. I thought it was a Simpsons rip off, which is the farthest thing from the truth. Family Guy is one of the best written shows EVER. The only thing that comes close is the first 6 seasons of the Simpsons. People who hate Family Guy need to watch ALL of the episodes. Family Guy's humor takes a while to get used to, but once you do, there is no going back. Futurama fans are going to be pist off if FG returns, but too bad. Family Guy should have not been cancelled in the first place. If it returns, it will be the first show to return after two cancellations. Family guy was hobbled by poor scheduling (it was up against fucking friends and Survivor!) If it returns, it needs to be put on AFTER the simpsons. After one season it will become painfully apparent who is the (now) better show and may finally lay the simpsons down to it's well deserved eternal slumber.

Not Curiosity/Firefly DVD (5, Insightful)

relatively short network run may have helped DVD sales, Video Store's Judith McCourt says. "It really speaks to something that had a following, was cut off network TV, and people said, 'What did I miss?' "

I don't think people are saying "hmm, I think I'll check out the family guy." Consumers of the DVD were fans of the show. It sounds like no one wants to admit that fox made a mistake when they cancelled it. Also I wonder if they make the same turn around when they see the strong Firefly DVD sales

Holler at me - extra footage (0)

that rocks. As anyone else noticed extra footage in the Adultswim reruns? I noticed some things I didn't remember from the same episode that I saw on FOX. I could be totally wrong.

I love it when Stewie goes into daydreaming about doing the song "Rocketman" just like william shatner and of course all the Shatner references!! Especially when they killed shatner and a guy in a red Trek uniform said" who would've guessed that."

These need to come out on DVD. Now. (2)

  • The Twisted Tales of Felix The Cat.
  • MTV's Downtown.
  • MTV Oddities: The Maxx.
  • The entire Beavis and Butt-Head series.
And most importantly...
  • Daria. [the-wildone.com] Nuff said.

What, pray, is this <censored/> doing on the front page of Slashdot?

Just thought I'd echo the other guy's comment.

What the DEUCE!? That's bloody marvelous! Family guy is a virtual cornucopia of matriarchal matricide. Does anyone know for certain if Stewie's accent is modeled after a South African or some form of British? I guess I'm not worldly enough to tell ;-)

So who's gonna start the online petition first?

Seriously, Family Guy was the best thing to hit FOX since The Simpsons... I am still curious as to why they cut it in the first place, never actually got a straight answer but I would asume that it was due to it's... strong presentation.

It is refreshing to have Fox take time out from their Fair and Balanced broadcasting to bring back a show as cool as this.
