Free Software In Iran, KDE In Farsi

timothy posted more than 10 years ago | from the pretty-screenshots dept.

GNU is Not Unix 510

Elektroschock writes "KDE, the leading *nix desktop environment, is translated to Farsi (=Persian). Now native language KDE can be used in Iran as well. Farsi is written from left to right. Full story at Dot KDE. Arash Zeini (KDE Farsi) wrote an intresting article about FLOSS in Iran. His view: "It is not a secret anymore that FLOSS is gaining momentum all over the world. We witness an international move and acceptance of FLOSS in the private as well as in the public sector."" Update: 12/29 16:37 GMT by T : That should read "Farsi is written from right to left." (Thanks to Thomas Zander for pointing that out.)

If you find semis... they are not worthless
Semis: these coins were mostly of bronze with very little silver. The coin was issued from the time of the Republic on, and appeared in various sizes and types. It was also used for the Roman half aureus. The term semissis was used to designate the semis when used as a half of the aureus or solidus.

A little oversensitive, perhaps? (2, Interesting)

Tor (2685) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826332)

To me, it did not seem that the term "the leading desktop environment" was used in an exclutinary manner - rather, it seemed that the intention was to explain what KDE is (to the occasional Windows-only user that happens upon /.)

Sort of like Ford, the leading auto maker (even though they are probably not the worlds largest).

PS. I use Gnome and WindowMaker. KDE is a bit too "all-or-nothing" for me.

Farsi is Right to Left (3, Interesting)

Stephen Samuel (106962) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826296)

From the website: <gtml lang="fa" dir="RTL">

Farsi, like most middle-east languages, appears to be written right-to-left -- the same as our numbers are -- When the original algebra texts from Persia were translated, the translator kept the right to Left form of the numbers (little-endian). This is the reason for the big-endian / little-endian dicotomy in modern day computers -- we've been writing our numbers backwards for the last thousand years!

The importance of FLOSS for developing countries has repeatedly been mentioned in the media and is a known subject by now. As Michael Dunham puts it "there is no question that Linux is a natural fit for developing countries with educated, talented entrepreneurs but limited capital."

It is not a secret anymore that FLOSS is gaining momentum all over the world. We witness an international move and acceptance of FLOSS in the private as well as in the public sector. Even though this acceptance can be recognized worldwide, we can guess that different reasons may be behind each country's or even individual's decision to use FLOSS. For the purpose of this paper however we would like to make a general differentiation between economically developed and economically developing countries.

The importance of FLOSS for developing countries has repeatedly been mentioned in the media and is a known subject by now. As Michael Dunham puts it "there is no question that Linux is a natural fit for developing countries with educated, talented entrepreneurs but limited capital." These countries have unique characteristics, which may pose new challenges to the free software movement.

Using Iran as an example we will discuss some of the advantages that FLOSS in general and GNU/Linux in particular have to offer. We don't make any theoretical distinction between Free software, open source and FLOSS for the purpose of this paper and use these terms as equals. Why FLOSS in Iran Iran is a unique case when it comes to its software industry. From one side it is under sanctions of USA, which prevent American companies to maintain a direct business relationship with Iranian companies, and on the other hand, Iran has not signed the international copyright law, which prevents almost any foreign company from having interest in Iran as a software market.
Even though it may look strange at first sight, an immediate result of these circumstances has been the fact that Iran never developed its own software industry. In fact many people in Iran equal a software company to a CD burning company.

Another very sad result of these limitations is the fact that Iran's official language, Farsi, has rarely been supported by foreign operating systems or applications. We have felt more than once that among other factors, a lack of knowledge of the English language stands as a burden in widespread adoption of computers in Iran. It has long been assumed that in order for someone to be able to use a computer, he/she should be fluent in English. Most if not all computer users seem to have forgotten that there can be a Farsi Graphical User Interface.

Given the mentioned limitations and the need for a Farsi environment, FLOSS's most significant advantage over proprietary software in Iran is obvious. With the source code being available to us, we can act on our own and add Farsi support where needed. We are aware that this is a simplification of technical circumstances and problems we may face, but in general it describes an approach, which has shown in practice that it works. In fact most free software desktop environments like KDE and Gnome have adopted standard methods of localization and internationalization. It is not without a reason that KDE is available in more than 50 languages. FLOSS offers a maximum on customizability, which is needed in order to achieve Iranian's unique needs.

Aside from the availability of source code, and the inherent customizability of free software applications, FLOSS enjoys another advantage in Iran. Unlike developed countries, a great number of Iranians have never touched a computer. Many small businesses in Iran still function without the use of any computer. Introducing GNU/Linux to these users is far easier than converting an existing Windows user. Experience shows for example that, as opposed to existing Windows users, new computer users are easier to introduce to the console and commands. The fight against the habits of a computer user is not necessary in this case. Good or bad, the fact that most of the population has never used a computer is an advantage for GNU/Linux, whereas in western countries, due to wide adoption of computers, it is not easy for users to overcome their resistance in switching to a new platform. This can be extended to a general concept. It is time for schools and universities to convert or begin with FLOSS as their educational platform to educate and introduce the coming generations to a technology that will bring us long time benefits over the use of proprietary software and technology.

Like many other governments around the world, the Iranian government is reluctant in relying on foreign companies and software when it comes to large scale installations in governmental organizations and national security. Furthermore with the current US sanctions on Iran, any business relationship between Iran's government and an American software vendor might prove to be impossible. This might be the driving force behind Iran's idea of a national operating system, which is supposed to be based on GNU/Linux. Unfortunately it is not possible for us to find any details about the project and its progress, but we are aware of the fact that such a project exists. Obstacles that FLOSS may face in Iran FLOSS loses one of it's advantages over proprietary software, when it comes to markets such as Iran. One very important factor behind the adoption of FLOSS all over the world is the price factor. As previously discussed, since the international copyright law is not being enforced in Iran, copies of almost any proprietary software can be found everywhere in shops across Iran. No license fees or any other inter-business financial transactions are connected with the making of these CDs. Thus as a direct result the price of foreign software is dependent on the price of raw CDs. On Average the price of each CD is around $3. It doesn't matter what the CD includes, only the number of CDs decides over the price. For example packages like Microsoft Office, cost slightly more as they come on multiple CDs; the price might go up to $10.

It is clear to us that FLOSS is not mainly about saving money, but about freedom and being part of a global movement, being part of a community that lives up to its self-defined ideals in a world, where financial transaction is the only measure of success. Still we have to admit that FLOSS attracts partly due to its economical advantages, which seems not to be the case in Iran. But the situation may change if/when Iran becomes a member of the WTO, something that, as it seems, will happen, sooner or later. In that case it would be an economical as well as strategic advantage for Iran to move towards FLOSS as soon as possible.

The second obstacle again is what can be regarded as an advantage in other countries. Most of free software for the GNU/Linux operating system is available online, at places such as freshmeat, sourceforge or Savannah. High speed Internet connections are not existent in Iran, and downloading megabytes of software from the Internet using a dial-up connection can be very frustrating up to impossible. On the other hand people are accustomed to going to a computer shop and buying their needed software on a couple of CDs. Of course this situation is subject to change if high speed Internet connections become available in Iran.

Another obstacle that may stand in the way of widespread usage of GNU/Linux among home users in Iran is the lack of support for games. While GNU/Linux nowadays offers virtually all the common applications necessary for knowledge workers, it is not a viable choice when it comes to games. This is not about simple Arcade or Solitaire, many Iranians can't live without games such as FIFA 2003 from Electronic Arts or Flight Simulator from Microsoft. It feels strange that gaming would pose an obstacle to FLOSS, but if we talk about FLOSS on desktops and its widespread usage and think about families and their needs, gaming is one of the more important issues here. It is yet to be seen whether Wine and Wine-based applications are able to provide a reasonable solution for gamers in Iran, or not.

FLOSS is in its infancy in Iran. While in many countries few people may ask questions like Why free software? and Why should a programmer release it's work for free?, these are among the most common questions that we face in Iran. In late 90s organizations like the Open Source Initiative and books published by O'Reilly sent the open source message out to the world. Nowadays media in developed countries cover open source related subjects regularly, and at least one can safely assume that those in the IT industry, are aware of the existence of open source software, and know the business model its based upon.
The level of awareness for open source software in Iran, may be compared to that of 1993 in the United States. System administrators in Iran can not understand free software, because they have never seen a program with source code. Even the government does not understand the threat that relying on close source software posses to the whole economy. Users have been brainwashed to believe that no one can equal the power of Microsoft in the software business. Even Apache has a far smaller market share than IIS. In a nutshell, Iranians live in a world where a real alternative to Microsoft does not seem to exist. It will be a hard work to convince them that relying on proprietary software, is dangerous. It will even be harder to explain that GNU/Linux is not just yet another operating system, that it is free software, and that free software means freedom. Explaining the meaning of free software and Open Source, and the reason that programmers choose to share their work with others, and how Iran will benefit by participating in this software sharing community, is indeed a daunting task. A task that should be completed, if we are to see widespread adoption of free software in Iran. Projects aimed at adoption of Free Software in Iran Being convinced about the global and local benefits of using free software, a loose network of individuals who shared the same views, funded Iran's first free software and GNU/Linux user group called LIGLUG (LinuxIran GNU/Linux User Group) under the leadership of Arash Zeini. We recognized that in order for free software movement to gain foot in Iran, some basic infrastructure is needed for supporting and setting-up free software projects. Considering the lack of a Farsi GUI, and the potential that free software projects have in customizability, we set out to make the Farsi desktop environment a reality.

linuxiran.org [linuxiran.org]

At first glance linuxiran.org! may look just like yet another website, but we hope that it is more than that. linuxiran.org! was Iran's first web site and community portat dedicated to free software and GNU/Linux and offers a virtual space for the community to hang out, to share news, to discuss and to make decisions about the subjects which seem to be of importance. In order to broaden the use of free software and GNU/Linux in Iran, we determined that a basic infrastructure was needed, so that decisions about the way the community should perform could be made. linuxiran.org! hosts LIGLUG projects and their related mailing lists, and offers facilities such as mailing lists and forums to any kind of free software related project in Iran.

The FarsiKDE Project: [farsikde.org]

Farsi is the official language of Iran and is widely used across Iran. Some other Iranian languages used across the region like Dari, spoken in Afghanistan, and Tajiki used in Tajikistan are related and close to Farsi. Overall an estimated 100 million people speak these languages. In late 90s, Arash Zeini contacted the KDE project and showed interest in translating the K Desktop Environment into the Farsi language. Unfortunately, translating computer programs to languages like Farsi, is a lot harder than doing so for a European language. European languages are written left-to-right (LTR), and have many similarities with each other with regards to their scripts. Since most programmers use LTR scripts, many applications are designed with that in mind. At the time, the KDE project's underlying toolkit, Qt, was not able to host right-to-left (RTL). Hence we had to wait for Qt 3.0 and KDE 3.0 to be able to type Farsi in KDE.

With the release of KDE 3.0 in 2002, we were generally able to start the translation process of KDE. But it was not until August 2002 that we began with the actual translation process.
KDE is nowadays a feature rich environment and consists of approximately 72,655 strings for the GUI part and 43,185 strings for the documentation part, which adds up to 115,840 strings for the total K Desktop Environment. Translating this project is not a job for the faint of heart, especially into a language with a weak vocabulary for computer terminology.
It was short before August 2002, that a couple of enthusiast met and formed LIGLUG, which later led up to the translation of KDE, under the name of FarsiKDE. It was our aim to translate kdelibs and kdebase - which are the minimum requirement for a language to be added to KDE - and make it ready for KDE 3.1. We were able to deliver our translations of kdelibs and kdebase and hence with the release of KDE 3.1 in January 2003, Farsi became an official language in KDE.

FarsiKDE has been a milestone for us, but it is far from being perfect. Many of KDE applications are yet to be translated, many inconsistencies have been found, and many improvements have been suggested. Fortunately after the release of KDE 3.1 more people became aware of this project and its first achievement, and have since joined in. Furthermore the Jalali calendar was added to KDE and thus Iranians will be able to have their own calendar in KDE 3.2. We are hopeful and determined to make using FarsiKDE, with the release of KDE 3.2, a more pleasant experience and hope to make FarsiKDE, a symbol for tomorrow's free software projects in Iran. For more information about this project, please visit http://www.farsikde.org and for a list of translators please refer to http://www.farsikde.org/team.php. [farsikde.org]

Shabdix: [shabdix.org]

After demonstrating the beta version of FarsiKDE in a computer exhibition in Tehran, we concluded that although many home and office users are interested in such an environment, they are not willing or able to install GNU/Linux and KDE just for the purpose of evaluating FarsiKDE. We needed a live CD to be able to demonstrate FarsiKDE. The perfect solution to this problem was KNOPPIX.

KNOPPIX is a Debian based distribution, which boots right from the CD drive, detects the system's hardware and loads the appropriate modules, with no user interaction. It is the right tool to show the KDE and GNU/Linux environment to new users. We based our live CD on KNOPPIX 3.1, upgraded some of it's applications, like KDE to 3.1, removed some non-free applications from it, made Farsi the default language of KNOPPIX and KDE, changed some icons and backgrounds and called it Shabdix. The latest version which is 0.8 was released in November 2003. The Road Ahead Outside of Iran few people now question the benefits of FLOSS to governments and businesses. While this is partly based on the financial attractiveness of FLOSS, we believe that in developing countries, free software can play a much more important role. With free software, there might be an opportunity for developing countries to close the so called digital divide while still upholding their independence. Free software will enable developing countries to be competent in today's ICT related world. The only way we can empower ourselves is FLOSS. This approach gives us the necessary freedom. We have access to the best technology and it is Free/Libre/Open and not restrictive. It does not put us in chains

Open Source and free software are in their beginning stages in Iran. The government of Iran has turned a blind eye to the issue of software; and no governmental institution sponsors any free software project. In fact if it hadn't been for the generous financial and technical support of a company called Chapar Shabdiz, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish any of our goals. Though our projects are slowly attracting attention, and our mailing lists and forums are slightly more useful these days, much remains to be done. Free software has a great potential to play an important role in developing countries such as Iran. We hope that the formation of LIGLUG and it's projects, help make this a reality.

Embedded Linux useful in Iran (0, Troll)

ObviousGuy (578567) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826257)

Though desktop Linux is definitely useful wherever it is found, an embedded Linux system would be very useful in Iran.

Iran, in case you've just crawled out of a hole in the ground, is located in one of the world's most geologically active areas. In fact, a large quake has recently struck a populated area of the country and it is estimated that around 20,000 people may have lost their lives in the quake.

Earthquake recorders based on an embedded Linux operating system could be used to predict and divert deadly earthquakes like that recent one.

Imagine a beowulf cluster of those!

But seriously, using Linux is just one step in the long fight to bring about serious long-term stability to a region racked by tribal warfare and religious persecution. Software freedom is one component of true democracy, and I hope that these inroads made in Iran shine as an example to other dictator-led countries that software Freedom and true Freedom are the fruits of Western ideals. I'm against globalization as much as anyone, but seeing Linux spread in this way just shows what can be done when enlightened globalization is pursued.

Iran isn't an Arab language, and Persians (primary ethnic group of Iran) aren't Arabs.

Similarly, people in Iceland use Latin script even though they're not Italian.

The Arabic script is used in other non-Arab countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, and in the past had been used in Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, and I'm sure others. The script had spread along with Islam, but in many places was abandoned during the second half of the 20th century as part of pushes to westernize/modernize.

Don't mean to be a pedant--but Farsi is actually an Indo-European language--meaning it's related to Latin, German, Spanish, etc (and Hindi!). You can see this in some cognate words--mother in Farsi is madar, father is pedar, brother baradar, etc.

Arabic is a semitic language, related to Hebrew. In Arabic these words are very different. (My Arabic is weak but mother can be "umm," father "ab" .. very different).

Both languages do use the same basic script--the Arabic script, though Farsi does have several additional letters.

How to make a system bilingual? (3, Interesting)

GerardM (535367) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826326)

I would like to know how to use two languages on one system so that I have a Farsi environment or an English environment at will.

I have many friends, among them Iranians, Turks and Israeli, who would like to have a bilingual system. Multiple keyboards are also an issue. Preferably it would need a switch to go from one language to the next alternatively a reboot would be acceptable.

Any ideas, resources that I might look at?

Thanks,
Gerard

OS X has a great system, you can have multiple accounts with each in its own langauge, or logout and in and change your language. Remaps the keyboard too.

However, I don't know if the OS is that up to date with those specific languages. The dialog boxes for the OS wouldn't show those languages you mentioned, except Hebrew maybe. Stuff like word processing would work fine though. Apps localized for those languages would work perfectly, and I believe OpenOffice is one of the word processors, as well as OS X's TextEdit.

Look into it, it MAY suit you, or it may not.

Two questions regarding the article. (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7826351)

They state that a major factor in adopting open source is the fact that most persians don't speak english and commercial companies can't supply native language versions. But since it's an islamic country most people speak arabic and could probably use already available version propriety software from neighbouring arab countries.
Secound since Iran is under sanctions will it be (technicly) illegal to cooperate with Iran based projects, accept patches from their developers and help them get "our" software?

Heading trolls off at the pass. (3, Interesting)

theolein (316044) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826360)

I can well imagine that, as with any article on /. relating to anything not understood/foreign/not american there will be a fairly high noise to signal ratio around here. So, I thought I could mention that Farsi (written from right to left in a modifed Arabic script) is an Indoeuropean language with no relation whatsover to Arabic, apart from the script (The Alphabet for those who think that script means VBS or Perl) and loan words.

Iran, with its odd mix of religious and democratic government (The religious side seems to be making it very hard for the elected officials to do anything), also has an interesting approach to copyright. According to Islamic law If I understand it correctly(), God is the source of all invention and creation and therefore the holder of all copyright. That means that things like MS anti-piracy drives are unknown there, as practically everything is pirated.

While it certainly is an interesting way of looking at things, I can see countries like the US (surprise, they don't get on well with the Iranians) making it very difficult for the Iranians ever getting into the WTO because so called IP has no value there (Read: Britney will not make much cash on CD sales in Teheran and the Matrix 2&3 will flop just as it did in the west, but for other reasons).

Additional languages (1)

theolein (316044) | more than 10 years ago | (#7826389)

According to what I know of Iran, Azeri, the language of Azerbaijan is spoken by about 25% of the population, but uses the same Arabic script and is interestingly referred to as Turkish by most Iranians.
