GTA - San Andreas Looks to be Next

CmdrTaco posted more than 10 years ago | from the and-then-you-run-them-over-and-get-your-money-back dept.

PlayStation (Games) 335

Rayonic writes "US publisher Take-Two Interactive went on a pre-Christmas trademark registration spree, the products of which point us tantalisingly towards the likely name of the next installment of the massive Grand Theft Auto series." Of course it won't actually be out for many many many moons, but expect much speculation on this one. I s'pose great game sequels deserve it.

Patent numbers? (1)

after (669640) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923293)

I can just see the articles about GTA being too violent and "too destructive to out future generation" rolling in. At least now the democrats have to use trademark symbols.

Does anyone know what the patent numbers are? I cannot find them anywhere on the USPTO office nor the article posted.

Anyway, best of luck to the development and publishing team -- I hope the highly biased threats stop about how the nature of the game acts upon the youth.

Re:Patent numbers? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7923364)

They were just registering trademarks for the name of the game and other things associated with it...no patents involved. That's one big problem with all of this intellectual property crap lately...all that stuff gets mixed up when people stop using the correct terms and just use one word to blanket them all.

Re:Patent numbers? (1)

RazzleFrog (537054) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923600)

They already had a trademark on GTA so the democrats would have to have been using them all along. Try using TESS [uspto.gov] to search Trademarks. You might also want to check out the difference between a Trademark, Patent, and copyright here [uspto.gov] .

In the original GTA, there were three towns: Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City.

Liberty City was used in GTA3
Vice City was used in GTA:VC
That leaves San Andreas.

Personally, I think it's just Rockstar covering their asses, I'd be suprised if it actually was San Andreas.

GTA Rocks (4, Interesting)

metlin (258108) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923303)

GTA really rocks!

The best part is that its got such a cool narrative and storyboard, and the way it takes you through it is awesome.

You wouldn't believe it, but an Interactive Fiction & Media class [gatech.edu] that I'm taking this semester taught by this guy [cmu.edu] actually requires us to play GTA3 and analyze the gameplay! :) Go see the course site!

And its kinda fun seeing why it really succeded - the whole story sometimes follows what seems to a post-modernist approach to storytelling, and its a great mix of both narrative and game-theory approach with a non-singular series of puzzles. And believe it or not, its success has really changed the way acadmic people look at gaming and at simulation and storytelling.

I can't wait to see whats coming up next! :)

Linus Torvald (739359) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923314)

But I hope they make it even better. Here's my wish list for a few things:

Smarter Cop A.I.
More Gang Wars
More Vehicles
More melee weapons
Different behavior patterns
First person support
Ability to swim
Longer and In Depth missions
Every day events (i.e. some peds get in a fight and cops goto break them up, a bank robbery, drive bys, etc) Yeah, great world eh?
Ability for more/less blood
Multiplayer
More indoor enviorments
Ability to buy items such as matches, food, different clothes from a mall, etc
More golf clubs!
Fix alot of bugs in the models/maps
Stuff totally changes from day to night, (gang activity, police activity, traffic, etc)
More side missions.

And once the game is complete there should still be a continous stream of mini missions, such as sorting out rival gangs, sorting out police, getting protection money, close of deals with other gangs, etc. Basically keeping control of your whole gang empire. These jobs could be received by phone or a pink/blue/yellow or whatever marker in your HQ.

Just a few ideas...

Re:Looking forward to the next GTA (0)

You mean to tell me you can write a kernel from scratch, but you can't fix a few bugs in a game?

Re:Looking forward to the next GTA (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7923544)

These fixes will be difficult if not impossible to implement because, regrettably, the games are still being developed for consoles. If developed for the PC, then of course the PC has the power to implement all of these alterations.

Unfortunately, although GTA is a great game, it's going to be more of the same. They should just call it a map pack and be done with it.

Re:Looking forward to the next GTA (1)

drinkypoo (153816) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923548)

Sounds like you're thinking about Postal 2. On the gang wars tip, it would be nice if gang members didn't identify you instantly. You're in a different car, just cruising along, how do they know it's you when they couldn't possibly have seen your face? That annoyed the piss out of me. It got to the point where I couldn't drive anywhere in anything without it getting shot to shit.

Re:Looking forward to the next GTA (1)

dhamsaic (410174) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923616)

Bah. The only problem gang in GTA3 is the Mafia in St. Marks in Portland. The other ones might be a problem if you're on foot, but in a vehicle, no sweat. The Mafia's shotguns will shred your vehicle in nothing flat, but that's why you've got the Bulletproof Patriot from "Marked Man", right? RIGHT?

(GTA:VC is super-easy gang-wise and hardly merits mention.)

Re:Bullit! (1)

ebbomega (410207) | more than 10 years ago | (#7923510)

Problem I had with GTA 3 was that it followed too religiously some pointers from San Fran... flat intersection between downhill spurts of street.

VC had a lot nicer texturing (well, duh...) but, yeah, I'd like to see more general hills and the like to launch myself off of than to rely on ramps and whatnot for unique stunts.

A swim engine would be nice too.... VC pissed me off because I had this cokehead who could run almost as fast as a Cheetah (car, not animal) but would die the second he got under water.

It would be nice to ba able to upgrade the cars, in case extra grunt is needed for a mission

It's called "Steal it from the Feds."

FBI Rancher and FBI Washington are still my favourite Rampage machines. Save the tank I've got for emergencies. And Patriots are nice for severe beef. My default location for getting loaded up pre-cop-assault is Phil Cassidy's.

Don't forget what happens when you steal the seismometer from the lab:
RAMPAGE!

Kill more people than the earthquake does!

Level 10

Better hurry, this is the big one!

That's funny... (1)

But I could honestly see them do stuff like that.

Props to the developers for this series. Honest. It's fucking attention to detail is amazing, and I can only hope for more in future installments.

no real shocker, (2, Insightful)

i mean San Andreas is the third city from the original GTA. which started you off in Liberty City, moved you on to San Andreas finishing you off in Vice City. It makes perfect sense for them to re-create San Andreas. why this move is a surprise to anyone who considers themselves a "GTA Fan" I don't know. I suppose it has to do with a lot of "GTA Fans" not realizing there were two complete (and excelent imo) games before GTA 3.

Okay, I think just about everybody here is a GTA fan. So why don't we take a survey?

Have you, since playing any of the GTA games, been convicted of a violent crime?

Go ahead, blame Saint Andreas. Its all his fault!
(I've had that one stored up for years, waiting to use on Slashdot.)

Heres why... (1)

If anyone remembers the original GTA, or maybe it was GTA 2, the three cities were IIRC Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas. Sin City didn't fit in, as Vegas is a bit too inland for the game (no boats, not that they were that great), but casino missions would be cool. Attention Rockstar Games, GTA 6 should be in Vegas, a casino enforcer type on the strip.
