Re:April fools day! (2, Interesting)

bigman2003 (671309) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944564)

That's because they want you to buy the next Medal of Honor update- not Doom III. EA Games would actually see Doom III as competition to some of their games.

Interestingly, another similarly named company, EB Games may want you to know a more accurate date- so they can sell more copies of Doom III, and share in the profits with the game designers, publishers, etc.

Acidic_Diarrhea (641390) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944490)

Big deal - there's been a Doom 3 box at EB for awhile now. Just because a retail outlet says a product is going to be out on a date, doesn't mean much of anything - especially when it comes to a video game.

This is completely meaningless. Stores put release dates out that are wrong quite often. Move on, move on.

irokitt (663593) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944606)

The alpha was only optimized for certain hardware configurations - namely a Radeon 9700 pro. And it is an Alpha, which serves as a preview of the story but doesn't reflect the final product at all. They have at least 4 months to work on the game, during which time things could improve considerably. Finally, realize that with Doom, Id is not only writing the game nut also writing the engine that the game uses, unlike about 90% of the games out there. So some of the "poop" comes from the engine itself.

Both stores linked from doom3.com state that:

Please note: id Software has NOT supplied a release date for this title. We will provide a date as soon as one is announced. Pricing listed is an estimate and is subject to change.

Re:No dates yet. (1, Troll)

juhaz (110830) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944607)

We don't know that yet.

ID Software has made plenty of technically advanced first person shooters, but after the original Doom, not one of them has been a good game.

Maybe there's something wrong with me but lousy plots, "shoot everything that moves, and shoot anyway if it doesn't" -gameplay and bad, repetitive map design just doesn't make me feel urge to upgrade my PC. I'd rather play something with a compelling storyline and gameplay than "ooh! pretty" that lacks everything else.

Now, they have been great technology demo, and base for other people to build the really good games and mods, and I guess they're at least somewhat playable in multiplayer mode.

Seriously tho, Quake3 was definitly badass and a ton of fun, and with all the maps available, as well as mods and add-ons, it was an amazing game! :)

DON'T get from Best Buy - It's cheaper at WAL-MART (-1, Offtopic)

Amsterdam Vallon (639622) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944523)

Friends, I just researched this this MORNING in fact for my son's birthday gift, and I found that it's priced as follows:

Doom 3 PC - $54.82 - WAL-MART [google.com]
DOOM 3 with Bonus! - $54.99 - EBgames.com
Doom 3 - Windows - $59.99 - Best (Worst!) Buy

PLEASE don't waste $5+ at Best Buy. If anything, get from Circuit City and not Best Buy because Best Buy costs a lot to return items there, whereas Circuit City lets you return anything, hassle-free, for 30 DAYS. And that's only if you HATE Wal-Mart.

I know a lot of people who HATE Wal-Mart because they're ruining American culture and various small towns across the country by putting Mom & Pop stores out of business. It's just not right what they're doing.

But still, they have DAMN good prices, so I buy stuff from Wal-Mart all the time because my salary (and higher education salaries) just AREN'T what they used to be. I barely make enough to support my wife and children.

Enjoy the game though. Here's a description of what to expect:
# Take part in a terrifying battle with the forces of the Hell. A massive demonic invasion has overwhelmed the Union Aerospace Corporations' Mars Research Facility, leaving only chaos and horror in its wake. As one of only a few survivors, you struggle with shock and fear as you fight your way to Hell and back in an epic clash against pure evil.Blast away through intensely realistic and visually stunning environments
# Enter a frightening 3D landscape
# Experience realistic physics and surround-sound
# Encounter real-time dynamic lighting
# Compete in vicious multiplayer action where shadows can be used to your advantage

I'm as likely to buy it from Wal-Mart as I am to buy it from McDonalds.

For similar reasons I don't buy fuel from Bush's buddies at Esso.

Remember your compatriots pouring French wine down the drain. It wasn;t because French wine was expensive it was because France decided not to help the US to colonize Iraq.

Even just the $2.85 million [boycottbush.net] contributed to Bush's campaign is enough reason for me.

Re:Price isn't everything (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#7944738)

That's an interesting read, but you realize that has nothing to do with Dubya. That money was given to the party, not his campaign.

Re:Did you hear that wailing sound? (4, Informative)

irokitt (663593) | more than 10 years ago | (#7944662)

The demos run on a 9700. And Carmack says the game will run well on considerably less than that. It's OpenGL, so you don't even need the latest version of DirectX (9.0b) to run it. A ti-4600 or an overclocked ti-4200 will serve, if that's what you already have. A Radeon 9600 Pro/XT will give you the best bang for buck. And a 9800 will put a large dent in your wallet. But avoid the new Nvidia cards unless you're not interested in being able to play Half-Life 2 when that comes out.

Their games, while aesthetically pleasing are far from original anymore. Doom3 is just going to be another run-and-jump-shoot-that-rocket game.

At least with UT2k4 they're adding new game modes and vehicles and such.

Also from all the stuff I've read it won't play decently on anything short of a 500$ graphics card and a 3Ghz processor.... Which leaves my main windows box [laptop] in the dust...

Just because you can pre-order it, doesn't mean it's not vaporware. Gamestop thoughtfully provides a link to their Duke Nukem Forever preorder page on their Doom3 preorder page. Note that Duke has a ship date in December 2005! EA Games has this Pre-Order: Ships on 07/14/2004
so.....gg

I still have a question... (0)

If anyone has seen the pre-order box, what are
the recommended video cards? I seem to recall
reading a while back that Romero etal stated that
the fastest video card out there could easily get
bogged down, and that they were not only finishing
the game, but waiting for better GPU's. Anyone know
anything about this??

In a nutshell, will I need to purchase a $500 video
card _just to play_ the game? (of course, I would... )

If you go to th EB Store [ebgames.com] from the id site [doom3.com] , the pre-order date is 7/14/2004.

Seems like just as much vaporware as it was early last year.

It looks as though the release date is 4/1/2004.

So it was released on the 4th of January?

Old News. EB says Doom3/HL2 4/1/04 (1)

Big news, yeah right. I found a boxed copy for pre-pay at EB or Game World durring xmas, asked the sales guy, was told 4/1/04. that was over a month ago. Same thing for HL2.

Does anyone know? (0)

Am I the only one thinking about the whole Segway pre-ordering stunt, and the ages it took before it was actually out?
