Time for a thread triage. Everyone complaining about how Star Wars is terrible and your childhood is ruined, reply here. People discussing Lucas and his never-ending quest to rape the franchise for more money, over on the left. Speculation about what crazy-assed title Lucas will come up for on this one, on the right. GNAA, you know what to do.

That bastard Lucas is raping my childhood memories in his quest for more money.

He might as well just call the movie "Give Me Your Money And Bend Over, Fanboy."

Personally, I'd rather watch Gay Niggers In Outer Space.

Episode II on DVD (5, Funny)

lazuli42 (219080) | more than 10 years ago | (#8785015)

This reminds me of last winter when Episode II came out on DVD.

I was at my local Walmart store when I stumbled across the island display offering Star Wars Episode II for some rediculously low price. I think it was $9.99.

"Wow," I thought, "That's really cheap! I should pick up a copy!" I greedily snatched up one of the widescreen packages.

But then I remembered that Episode II really really sucked. I put the package down.

But it was only $9.99! Even if it sucked, what a bargain!

But then again, the movie really did suck. Completely. In fact I could easily rant for an hour about how badly the movie sucked. I mean, don't get me started on Jango Fett, the apparently psychic bounty hunter. Or the totally clueless Jedi. Or Count Doogie. Arghh.... I digress.

Anyway, I decided not to waste $9.99 on the DVD. Unless the reviews for Episode III are really stellar, I'll save my $7.50 and skip that movie too.

PlatinumInitiate (768660) | more than 10 years ago | (#8784963)

Anakin to Padme: "I don't like sand. It's rough. Not soft and smooth like you."

Some of the dialogue in Episode II was cringe-inducing. I feel the special effects were actually underrated, though. For example, people gasped in awe at the opening scene in TTT, (Gandalf diving down under the bridge in Moria after the Balrog), but few realize (or will admit) that those effects were essentially copied from the scene in AOTC where Anakin dives from his speeder.

Ideally, Lucas should aim for both good effects (at which, IMO, he has been fairly consistent), and good direction and dialogue (a bit lacking in AOTC).

Try The 5th Element , taxi scenes. Visual effects for falling/fighting are nothing new.

This is true enough, although the similarities between the specific scenes I mentioned in AOTC and TTT are very difficult to ignore.

Re:You can say that again. (5, Insightful)

stratjakt (596332) | more than 10 years ago | (#8785085)

The star wars universe is black and white. The plot of all movies is simple and straightforward. The dialogue is simplistic and easy to follow.

The movies, although I enjoyed them, have never been a pinnacle example of filmmaking. They're just a fun way to waste a couple hours.

When I was a kid I couldnt wait to see Empire or Jedi. And it wasnt for the brilliant dialogue, I wanted to see some cool space dogfights, neato lightsaber battles, and weirdo looking robots and aliens.

I wasn't as dissapointed in Eps 1 & 2 as the rest of you. I only showed up for the effects, and shut my brain off to watch 'em. Yoda going all Wu-Tang at the end of Ep 2 was cool.

The only character I ever thought was cool was Boba Fett, so I guess I'm a little miffed that they rewrote him as a hot-headed latino with a chip on his shoulder. I liked the mysterious, soulless, motivated-by-cold-hard-cash bounty hunter, myself.

Anyhow, there'll be a ton of cool fights in the next one. The Jedi get their asses kicked and Anakin gets knocked into some acid/lava/wookie urine..

I'll watch it, and enjoy it for what it is.

Re:Whee (2, Funny)

Kenja (541830) | more than 10 years ago | (#8785000)

I hope they get rid of all the dialog given how bad it was in the last two movies. In fact, get rid of the actors as well. Hell, lets just do without the whole movie.

Movie twits go to the opening, boast about the movies to their friends, who might go friday.

And no matter how horrible the film, movie twits pump it up like it's the be all and end all of western civilisation.

Basic summary of a Star Wars movie

  1. R2D2 will use at least one new accessory, to the delight of the audience;
  2. R2D2 will be seen in the background either ascending or descending a set of stairs; this will largely go unnoticed by the audience;
  3. One of the characters will fall into a very deep hole/shaft.

Note that Episode II violated item number three, but this was largely offset by Ms Portman's presence.

what was the rumored title again? (0, Flamebait)

The Creeping Sense of Disappointment?

Seriously, I can't wait. I'm dead serious - I'm too much of a fanatic to let petty things like plot and cool dialogue get in the way of a Star Wars movie. Come on! It's friggin Star Wars, man! Anything Star Wars related is cool, except for the books. Those are just plain stupid. Go ahead, mod me down, and I'll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

It has been foretold.. (2, Funny)

With the name of episode IV being "A New Hope" it sounds like episode III is going to be really tragic mess. George Lucas already foretold it!!
