Couple of Dorks in Wired

CmdrTaco posted more than 15 years ago | from the we're-very-very-sorry dept.

Slashdot.org 69

drwiii was the first to submit it and I guess I have to post it. Hemos and I have our pictures in the March issue of Wired (p45). We look like dorks, but when they took that picture it was like 5 degrees out and had something like a 25 degree wind chill. This is for the March issue they say as they order us to remove our coats and risk frostbyte so that we look timely. Eek. I guess this means I should buy this issue. Update: 02/15 10:34 by CT : I'm the ugly on. The ugly one on the right. The metal thing is a lighthouse.

Ok, apart from the ugly mug shots of you two, what the hell is that big red thing that you're leaning up against?

It looks like a building on a harbor or on a mini-golf course.. (?!)

Tell me! hurry!

No comment about the picture, it kind of speaks for itself. Can be used as a frontpage for MAD :-)

Suppose it's 5 degrees Farenheit.

Okay, I'll buy that. So when did they move Holland MI up to the Canadian border?

Could it be that old cutter they have parked out there? (It's been about twenty years since I've been there).

do the people in Minnesota really speak like the actors in Fargo? It sounds so bizzare..

Location of picture -- full disclosure! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015626)

holland lighthouse [holland.org] , located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, near Holland, MI. Sorry about the crappy picture (altough it's not as crappy as the picture it is in reference to!)... I spent a lot of time there as a lad...

I'm sure the Holland chamber of commerce will appreciate us crashing their server just in order to satisfy our geographic curiousity!

more than we'd like to admit, i'm sure (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015627)

most of that stuff happens up north (up brainerd way), though. usually older folks (40+) too; i haven't noticed it as much from the younger crowd. i think it's funny because i only live here, i didn't grow up here, so i pick it out really easily; most people don't even notice it. what you see more of is some of the minnesota-isms (both spoken and mannerisms) sans accent (at least from a wider range of people).

Aha ... now it all begins to make sense ... Rob and Hemos, seeking to further their own glory, coax Jon Katz to write article?s for /.. Knowing his connections to hotwired [howtired.com] , they mysteriously appear in the true-geek-cum-hip magazine less than 6 months later.

Coincidence?

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015633)

assuming thats the lower half that is... I live just outta chicago and we don't get too much snow but from what i've seen and heard, in michigan they get tons of snow cause they're on the other side of the lake (lake michigan, that is)

and what the hell is it lately that i keep running into geeks that look like they belong in my group of friends??? all my friends are non-geeks but id love to have a few geeks that i can talk techy to sometimes... i say RAM and everyone just kinda looks at me funny :-(

Um.. that picture sucks. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015638)

I've been really disappointed with our local weather here in Minnesota, Any temperature above 10 degrees is totally unacceptable, let alone 30 or 40...I want my 45 below with the minus 70 windchills, where your exposed skin flash freezes in like 30 seconds...oh well

5 degrees isn't cold! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015639)

except for those damn merkins with their farenheit scale.. I didn't parse the temperature as farenheit until my 3rd pass, because like 95% of the worlds population, I use CELCIUS.. damn yankees expecting us to assume farenheit when they're the only people in the world that still use that backwards scale

The big red thing (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 15 years ago | (#2015640)

Getting married at the lighthouse? Farm out! Did you know that a little scale model Christmas tree ornament of the lighthouse in Holland is available. They are ceramic, red (duh), and about 1-1/2 in tall. They are available at finer curio shops everywhere. (part of a series of lighthouses) I got one when we were in Oregon last summer.

Talk about non-linear...

Although it's quite amusing to throw some hot water out your front door....its all frozen before it hits the ground....=)

C/K is too imprecise, the numbers are 1.8 X coarser than F or the (oversight ?) ommited R.

Still, if it was so damned cold, why no contrails?

When you spit & it makes a crackling sound (as it freezes) before it hits the ground, it's about -40 C/F or 233 K / 414.6 R or colder.

Just hope you don't die from it! ;)

For the amount of satisfaction we all get from your site (even the 'angry' posters - perhaps especially), congratulations.

I have no doubt, in all seriousness, that Slashdot, and the notorious "/. effect" will be prominent features of the socio-technological landscape for many years, if not generations, to come. (until, that is, the world is razed by y2k-enraged appliances)

Your appearance in Wired is a fruit (the first of many, i'm sure) of nothing more or less than your own sincere efforts and dogged persuit of your own dreams. If I could leave a mark 1/100th as bold...

We look like dorks, but when they took that picture it was like 5 degrees out and had something like a 25 degree wind chill.

So, did they use warm water or a sharp scraping tool to remove you from the large metal thing to which you froze during the shoot? It's not a bad picture, anyway.

Only those damn Californians would ask you Michigan types to take your coats off outside in the winter. I mean, winter in Michigan is *hard*. It *builds character*. It means *lots of time indoors drinking beer*. Or so my friends from Detroit, Kzoo and Lansing tell me :)

The whispered-about Wired Effect doesn't apply in this case though, because you didn't get the cover. (It works like the Sports Illustrated Cover Effect, except faster -- remember how much faster a Web year is).

Oh I see, you don't believe me about the Wired Effect. Oh yeah? You remember that cover about "Push"?

Industrial Disease (16177) | more than 15 years ago | (#2015675)

I'm sure even geeks can pick up Wired on the rare occasion when it covers something relevant. Like, say, new short fiction from Neal "Snow Crash" Stephenson, or last month's article about Matt Groenig's "Futurama". Besides, I'm sure there's less of a stigma attached to being in Wired than buying it.

None Dare Call It Coincidence (1)

Industrial Disease (16177) | more than 15 years ago | (#2015676)

Obviously not. The colonists had planned to use the lighthouse as a waystation; the faceless rebels shot this picture to expose their plot! Of course, I'm sure you all already know that CmdrTaco is a failed alien-human hybrid experiment.
