Miner Willy's Mega-Tree Auctioned For Charity

simoniker posted more than 10 years ago | from the tremendously-toga-free dept.

Classic Games (Games) 21

Thanks to Blue's News for pointing to a Megatree Ltd. press release discussing the charity auctioning of the original development discs for Mega-Tree, the legendary, unfinished Commodore 64/Spectrum title that "was [to be] the third in a trilogy of games following 'Manic Miner' and 'Jet Set Willy'." The currently-in-progress Ebay auction, to benefit Cancer Research UK, has much more info and concept drawings of the game sometimes called Miner Willy Meets The Taxman by co-creator Matthew Smith, also noting that "The Atari hard disk containing more 'Mega-tree' graphics was 'lost' when it accidentally dropped off the back of Matthew's motorbike when he went through the Mersey tunnel."

Disk Error - Abort, Retry, Fail ? (2, Interesting)

DrSkwid (118965) | more than 10 years ago | (#8927168)

I hope my disks sat readable for that long.

I've had floppies corrupt in the time it takes to walk across the room !

I still have some BBC games [proweb.co.uk] on cassette and disk.

Yeah, anybody bidding on them is taking a big risk if they are even going to load. After 20 years of sitting there, the chances of all the discs still working is slim, but you never know - a new of them might still be working.

Not to mention the funniest part:

I do not know what the contents of these disks are and cannot guarantee that they contain data from 'Mega-tree'

Hmmm ya feeling lucky?

It fell off a bike? (1)

lovebyte (81275) | more than 10 years ago | (#8927857)

According to the police: on Merseyside, many things magically fall off vehicles!

Ahh but technically in the Mersey tunnel one is under Merseyside...

Was this post written in English? None of it makes any sense!

Things to do today (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#8928806)

Things to do today

  • Listen to Children of Bodom "Hatebreeder" on full volume

  • Fix some shell scripts on my Octane system

  • Eat egg mayonnaise sandwiches

  • Smoke some Lucky Strike cigarettes

Well, that's me. What is everyone else up to?

Manic Miner (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#8930235)

Get Manic Miner for Java enabled phones here [vizzavi.co.uk] or here [orange.co.uk] . The Vodafone release has all 20 levels, the Orange version just has the first five.

Oh, and this charitable release from MegaTree appears to be more about self promotion rather than setting free the fabled sequel.

And don't forget my own port that runs in a web browser [bigredswitch.co.uk] !

You wrote that? Damn, you rock. You reduced all of my web-developer friends to slack-jawed amazement and the making of little whimpering noises. You're too good!

Now, does the WRITETYPER cheat work?

Re:Manic Miner (1)

bigredswitch (622835) | more than 10 years ago | (#8932844)

I wrote that quite a few years ago - it took about three months (it doesn't have the 'typewriter' cheat, BTW, and is not quite finished but is playable to the end). I'm also working on a Jet Set Willy [bigredswitch.co.uk] port but that's some way off completion.

Matthew Smith's website (1)

For anyone who's interested, Matthew Smith has a website here [freeserve.co.uk] (although it hasn't been updated in years).

This is so cool (2, Interesting)

evil-osm (203438) | more than 10 years ago | (#8934468)

Talk about giving fans the chance to finish off where the developers left off. This is pretty darn neat, granted the disks still function, as they said, the disks may not even work after 20 years.

I'd LOVE to see this happen with Ultima 8's lost expansion (The Lost Vale) [shiftedphase.com] . It would be soo neat if EA released the old code for that expansion since it never got completed, as the community would be far more than willing to complete it. Please EA? huh? huh? :)

good story... (1)

I'm pretty sure that was Space Miner 2049 (aka SMiner). Fun little game.

Hmmm...that could have been a followup game, I found a Miner 2049er page [classicgaming.com] of the one I was talking bout. pretty fun as I recall.

Hackers (1)

Old Wolf (56093) | more than 10 years ago | (#8945695)

From the Jet Set Willy article:

If you always type MERGE "" whenever you load a game for the first time, then you can count yourself amongst that select programming group known as 'hackers'

I love it!!!!

Good article though. I got all the objects in the game (many years ago now) but still did not manage to complete it successfully (actually I'm not sure if I did or not: I remember my head being stuck down the toilet though). I dont know what the guy is going on about the Conservatory Roof tho, I never had any trouble getting up there.
