Olsen Twins Sue Acclaim For Unpaid Royalties

CowboyNeal posted more than 10 years ago | from the getting-their-due dept.

The Almighty Buck 60

filtur writes "The Olsen twins (that got your attention) are suing video game maker Acclaim for royalties regarding their Olsen twins branded video games. Acclaim has apparently run the brand into the ground." Once dubbed "the most powerful young women in Hollywood," the money involved seems almost trivial by comparison to even their individual net worths, but it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

Ordinarily I'd dismiss this as silly, but seeing someone sue possibly the most wrongheaded and misguided software company out there makes me laugh:) (Anyone who doesn't know what I mean, go look up their history. It's high-larious.)

More to the point, Mary-Kate and Ashley are about 48 days away from reaching legal age.

Oh, guys! This is going to rock. One time I was flipping through channels to get to my news(oh, that Iraq situation! When will our boys ever finish up their and make it back for the celebrations? I'm fair and balanced, I'm not so righteous as to claim to know what to think of the reasons for the war, but let's support our boys and the cleaning up of Iraq! Fair and balanced!) and sports(oh, watching hockey is so much fun, yeah! Go Phillies! Canada sucks!) and I stumbled upon their show, and, guys, they are so hot! I can't wait until whoever runs Penthouse gets them to do a shoot...together! Totally lesbian! Lesbians are so hot, because, like, it's ALL women, and no gross men! AH, man, men are so gross! It'll be great! It'll make jacking off so much less strenuous because of the arousal it will give us! I'M first in line!

It's Acclaim. I've obviously never played it, but I'd bet my house on the fact that it's a pile of crap. Even if it didn't star the two most annoying hot girls in human history.

It's time to ditch Acclaim and find another video game publisher... of course, you wouldn't want to be associated with such a company anyway.

You may also want to have a chat with, say, Tony Hawk, about being involved in the game production. I mean, you wouldn't want to slap your name on just any old merch, now would you?

Now, when do we finally get a Super Olsen Sisters Advance?

(Not actually knowing that much about the twins, I'm wondering if there's any difference between them that can be translated to gameplay. Like, one of them can jump higher, but the other can bash bricks with her head or something).

Re:I would have a witty comment... (2, Informative)

NonSequor (230139) | more than 10 years ago | (#8981968)

They (both) played the youngest child on the American sit-com Full House. When the show ended, they were in their early teens and they began making various straight to video films targetted at preteen girls. Apparently these videos made a lot of money and they invested it well. In addition to video games they've produced many other products as well. They have a lot of money and have a history of making sound business decisions so I'd say that they stand a good chance of winning this lawsuit.

Re:I would have a witty comment... (0)

According to IMDB, the show ended in 1995, while the girls were born in 1986. Thus, they'd have been 9 or 10 when the show ended; not _quite_ "early teens." Not that it really matters, I guess... just bored.

They've also recorded a dozen or so CDs, starting when they were very young. They probably made more off of the videos, but most young girls who like them know them more from their music.

As the father of an 8 year-old girl who loves Mary-Kate and Ashley, I have had the... er... pleasure of listening to every CD they've published. It frightens me, but I can actually sing along to most all of their songs.

Does the fine print show that it's actually them singing? I've recently had the "pleasure" of watching one of their godawful videos with my two young daughters. The girls barely looked awake, and they didn't lip-sync very well either.

I personally think it's some kind of combination of them being twins, and (in a very sick and disturbing way) watching them grow up on TV as one of America's favorite shows... sorta like Oedipus, only in reverse.

Having said it's sick and disturbing, I'd gladly fuck the brains out of both of them, in rapid succession.

I really couldn't care less about the Olsen twins otherwise (and I know I'm probably the only guy here who doesn't have their 18th birthday marked on a calendar somewhere), but anybody who goes after Acclaim [penny-arcade.com] makes them alright in my book. May they go bankrupt and take their copies of BMX XXX with them.

Acclaim should declare they're now developing exclusively for the Phantom. The two deserve each other.

Acclaim has the most CONSISTENT record out of any game company I've ever seen. Wall to wall crap starting from the late 80s.

I'm STILL amazed at the fact they haven't gone out of business. Guess that just makes them the cockroach company of gaming.. maybe nothing CAN kill them.

If only I had mod points...

Seriously, tho, wasn't that Activision that got sued over the Star Trek franchise? It definitely wasn't Acclaim, since they've thankfully never so much as breathed on the license.

Besides, if you've seen Enterprise recently, it's pretty clear that they don't need any outside help in destroying the franchise.

The only fans they have are skinny, pimply, horny mid-teen boys sitting alone in their parents' basement's?

Of course I refer only to Star Trek Enterprise... I can't argue that the age of the fans of TOS, TNG, or DS9 is limited only to mid-teens... Voyager is up for debate though.

Just on the surface, you gotta side with the hot twins. Acclaim could've easily made half decent games and plopped the MK&A brand on it. Olsen Twins Bedazzled, Olsen Twins Music Trivia, Olsen Twins Pictionary. No one was looking for Halflife level Olsen Twins games, but Acclaim, as usual, screwed it up by releasing drek. In thier defense though, Acclaim has released nothing but crap since 1998 so maybe the twins should've seen it coming.

God, the video is AWFUL. What the hell is so great about two girls (who look vaguely like "Troll dolls" [mit.edu] ) pretending to sing and act? They mostly just sit there and look tired of cameras pointed at them.

Keep in mind it's not really the twins suing, it's the lawyers running their massive empire.

I have it on good authority that a certain fellow who runs the operation is a massive asshole, I mean asshole beyond anything anyone would reasonable would tolerate, and the only reason he can get away with his outrageously insulting remarks and attitude is that he is the 800 pound gorilla.

I personally feel that the twins' franchise is one of the most overexposed, shallow brands in HISTORY. Hopefully, they will both survive their childhood.
