On E3's Missing Cavalcade Of Games

simoniker posted more than 9 years ago | from the crying-fanboy-tears dept.

Games 39

Thanks to the Gaming-Age forum regulars for discussing "notable games not actually shown at this week's E3 show", despite the insane flood of new titles, with particularly noticeable no-shows including Raven-developed PC FPS Quake IV, Sony's "oft-rumored [PlayStation 2?] sequel to ICO", Nico, as well as Microsoft/Level 5's "massively multiplayer Xbox RPG" title True Fantasy Live Online, in addition to Sony's PSX hardware, with the PS2/DVR combo now heavily rumored to have had its U.S. release canceled. Is there any other hardware/software you've been disappointed not to hear about, besides the obvious?

Whutt!? (3, Informative)

Leffe (686621) | more than 9 years ago | (#9148725)

There were enough games to make me happy [gamespot.com] , IMO (IANAL)!

Including some new Thief game and Half-Life 2, anything else pales in comparision :)

Re:Whutt!? (1)

Robmonster (158873) | more than 9 years ago | (#9150650)

some new Thief game

This is one of the most anticipated games out there. I for one an salivating at the prospect of there being Review code available next month.

Would have been nice (4, Interesting)

Jmechy (656973) | more than 9 years ago | (#9148806)

to see Doom III PC there. Also, Halo 2 was only being shown to the press and other extra special people today. Guess I'll just have to stand in line for hl2 again...

Mario 128 (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9148836)

Seriously. "New Super Mario" and Mario 64x4 is nice and all. But I need the goods.

Re:Mario 128 (4, Informative)

Servo5678 (468237) | more than 9 years ago | (#9149285)

Mario 128's status is revealed here [gcadvanced.com] . Here's a partial quote.

"Shigeru Miyamoto is still working on the game but is not ready to show it just yet. Apparently with his ongoing work with the Nintendo DS and his other projects, the next Mario game has dropped to the back burner for the moment. Kaplan assures that is has not disappeared and we will see it when Miyamoto is ready to show it. As soon as it is revealed you can count on GCA to bring you the information."

Shigeru IS Nintendo... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9153132)

It's amazing to consider how Shigeru basically carries Nintendo. It's also unfortunate that games we want to see take so long to come out because they depend on Shigeru's involvement, and he's just so damn busy.

Re:Shigeru IS Nintendo... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9156428)

You'd be surprised to see how right you are about him being spread thin across Nintendo's product lines. His soul seems to be in almost every product, even those he didn't create.

But you might also be surprised to see how much work is done under the supervision of Miyamoto's colleagues and direct subordinates. Think of Miyamoto as the top dog. I'd say he has major veto power. But many many other people inside Nintendo are also responsible for its success, and I think that rather than focusing on Miyamoto, it would be best to consider him the driving force behind a strong team.

Just as an example, Yokoi, Kondo, and Aonuma are just three other names that every Nintendo should know - especially (if you consider yourself a consumer of American pop culture) Kondo. He's the reason you can't get those 8-bit NES chiptunes out of your head these 20 years later.

never released: baywatch: gang bangs (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9148945)

other titles:

kablammo (kaboom 3).
nuke kanata (changed it's name to avoid troubles).
telemarketer killer.
grandpa racing.
suv: fuel economy challenge.
house trasher: the suburbs.
home wrecker: threesome assault.
Border crossing.
Kite Knockout Killer.

Gamecube add-on (4, Interesting)

Sayron1 (606638) | more than 9 years ago | (#9148961)

I personally was looking forward to seeing the mysterious GC hardware peripheral that Nintendo was theoretically going to show at E3. Hopefully, whatever it is, it won't do a 64DD and be poorly marketed in Japan and never release stateside.

Mother 3 (3, Informative)

shoptroll (544006) | more than 9 years ago | (#9149446)

I had heard they were going to be showing Mother 3 this year.

Well if today is the last day, maybe some news will make it out.

Otherwise, there's always Spaceworld.

Re:Mother 3 (1)

BIGmog (592353) | more than 9 years ago | (#9150844)

I was expecting Mother 1+2 for GBA to at least show up on a release list. Looks like it's gonna be a Japan only title. I was also looking forward to Giftpia and Nintendo Puzzle Collection for GC. Both have been available in Japan for a while now so it's disappointing to see no mention of either of them.

Re:Mother 3 (1)

josh glaser (748297) | more than 9 years ago | (#9164708)

I really hope Mother 1+2 (Earthbound 0+1) comes to America. I missed EB the first time around, and everybody tells me how great it was. Nintendo Puzzle Collection? How hard can that be to translate!?! And is Giftpia really out in Japan? I might just import it if it doesn't come out soon.

Team Fortress 2 (4, Funny)

Tickenest (544722) | more than 9 years ago | (#9150142)

Now #2 on the current list of most vaporous vaporware titles, behind only the obvious.

DNF Three Years Ago (1)

DarthVeda (569302) | more than 9 years ago | (#9150827)

In 2001 I swore we'd have that ellusive title by Christmas with the E3 video they gave us. The game looked practically finished. I have no idea what happened to the game that they showed at 2001 E3 but it is obviously not going to be the game that ships.

Fire Emblem... (3, Interesting)

damiangerous (218679) | more than 9 years ago | (#9150880)

I'd like to know when Fire Emblem is going to make it over here. I saw a blurb in a gaming mag a couple months ago that said it was coming, but that's about it. There's not very many turn-based strategy or RPGs on consoles, especially the Cube (the only one I have). Besides Gladius, which rocks, I don't know of much else.

Gr33nNight (679837) | more than 9 years ago | (#9152013)

Fire emblem was shown, here is a link :

Duke?? (1)

An El Haqq (83446) | more than 9 years ago | (#9151046)

Is there any other hardware/software you've been disappointed not to hear about, besides the obvious?

Anybody who's still disappointed about the non-appearance of Duke Nukem 4 needs to re-evaluate her priorities. Really. Duke Nukem 3D was nice, but given the recent Duke offerings, I can't imagine that DN4 would be the life-expanding experience that it's vapor-fueled hype has promised. Valve has a better track record than the progenitors of the Duke franchise. Valve.

Yawn. Now, if anybody can tell me how to play Duke 3D on OS X, I'd be glad to hear the tale.

Re:Duke?? (1)

ArmpitMan (741950) | more than 9 years ago | (#9154452)

DOSBox [sf.net] and a shitload of power under the hood might do the trick.

Re:Duke?? (1)

An El Haqq (83446) | more than 9 years ago | (#9159057)

Oh, geez. I'd forgotten the horrors of DOS configuration until I checked out DOSBox. I think I'll stick w/ my memories for the moment.

Re:Duke?? (1)

jonwil (467024) | more than 9 years ago | (#9159462)

I think the source code to Duke3D was released at some point, mabie there is an OSX port (or mabie someone can do one)

Stars! Supernova (1)

miryth (732380) | more than 9 years ago | (#9151383)

Mare Crisium was developing this for ages, a sequel to the original "Stars!"... couldn't find a publisher... seems like MOO3 would be kind of similar to it, but I tried it and yeah, it's the same. Except with all the good parts taken out and replaced with crappy parts.

I think the most recent news on their site last time I saw it was 2001 sometime... and now the site seems to be down. Damn. Seems like it's totally lost...

Double Fine? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9152709)

I haven't heard a bit on Psychonauts. Any word from the floor?

Same with the sequel to Freedom Force? Lost in the crowd perhaps?

Re:Double Fine? (1)

acxr is wasted (653126) | more than 9 years ago | (#9156453)

Man, Psychonauts. The premise of that game was so neat, the promise of playing it one day was one reason I got an XBox. Bastards. I seem to remember an article on IGN about it getting canned, but I can't find it now.

My next game (1)

MalaclypseTheYounger (726934) | more than 9 years ago | (#9153729)

I want to buy Civilization 4. Or Civilization IV. Whatever they want to call it. I'm hooked on that game, and would love to see what they come up with next.

I heard they actually dropped terrorism from CIV3, I think it would be an interesting addition to add to the game, especially for smaller/weaker countries to attempt to at least slow down bigger countries' growth.

More technology would be fun as well. And add Fundamentalism back to the choices of government.

Re:My next game (1)

Carnildo (712617) | more than 9 years ago | (#9155115)

Fundamentalism was overpowered if you wanted to conquer the world. That's why both FreeCiv and Civ 3 droppeed it.

Re:My next game (1)

MalaclypseTheYounger (726934) | more than 9 years ago | (#9155986)

Yeah, I know (that's why I liked it!).. but they could easily balance that government type by adding more civil disobedience, corruption, etc.. (as fundamentalist countries are wont to do)

Killer 7 (1)

oldManSquad (598326) | more than 9 years ago | (#9156395)

I haven't heard anything about this cell shaded adventure? [capcom.co.jp] yet.

I saw it on an unconfirmed Capcom E3 games list but so far have yet to clap eyes on a preview.

Anyone seen it about?

Re:Killer 7 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9157666)

Planet Gamecube [planetgamecube.com] had a little bit on it. It's apparently about an assassin with multiple personalities, each of which has different abilities.

Warning: If you go to Planet Gamecube with Internet Explorer, you will be convinced to try Mozilla.

Re:Killer 7 (1)

oldManSquad (598326) | more than 9 years ago | (#9160079)

mmm...all i could find on there was this bit [planetgamecube.com] dated 6th of Jan 04. I couldnt see any new E3 coverage.

This game is taking an age to be released. Every preview I have seen so far about this game has been a bit vague about how the actual game will play. The trailer looks cool, but it would have been nice to see some hands on stuff.

Was hoping E3 would have delivered it, but alas :(
