Can we just do a search-and-replace of this article with the Google article again?

I have a number of on-topic jokes to make re: Google, googol but I fear they will be lost amonst the regular Slashdot dreck.

When I was a kid my sister had an EZ Bake oven that used a 60 watt light bulb to make little cakes. A Pentium IV puts out more heat than that, so that would make an interesting mod.

OK, I lied. The EZ bake oven was mine. I'm man enough to admit it.

>that, so that would make an interesting mod.

yeah, but the EZ bake bulb's filament burns at something like 5000-6000 Kelvins to put out enough infrared to do its cooking. The pentiums, by comparison, will run around 325-340 K, and the wavelengths emitted will be far too long to be useful for cooking. By Wien's Law, the peak wavelength would be around 8.5 micrometers whereas with tungsten filament bulb. With the nature of the falloff toward the blue side of the peak radiation in the Stefan-Boltzman distribution at a given temperature, almost all of the energy would be wasted at wavelengths too long to really heat most substances. You would need good thermal contact to do it at those temperatures.

Re:Awe Scweet (1)

Megahurts (215296) | more than 10 years ago | (#9184748)

oops. I left a fragment. I meant to say "whereas with the tungsten filament bulb, it will be slightly to the red side of the visible range with a significant amount of near IR"

note to self: use the stupid preview button.

Re:Awe Scweet (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#9184937)

One doesn't need to rely on the em radiation to do the cooking. Just connect the heatsink directly to the baking chamber.

Re:Awe Scweet (1)

fjordboy (169716) | more than 10 years ago | (#9185338)

alright alright. I confess too. I own (and operate on a regular basis) an EZ bake oven. My sister got it for me as a bit of a gag gift for christmas - but having it in a dorm room is mighty helpful. Multiple cakes have been baked in the oven and I've even documented the process (w/ pictures) [peterswift.org] . The ez bake is girly pink, but it makes one heck of a 2 bite cake. Though the funny thing is - with the prep-work and so forth the total amount of time to make a two bite cake is probably 25 minutes....and to buy a cake mix (this was walmart's price) was 5 dollars. This was enough to make two cakes. However - those two cakes are smaller than cupcakes! I could buy a regular full size cake mix and make a cake about 30 times the size with about half the cost and comparable time. This frustrated me, though the novelty of baking someone a birthday cake in my dorm room might have made up for it.

Also - if anyone wants to make an ez bake cake w/o buying the oven, a reading light with a 100 watt bulb stuck in a drawer works out just as well.

There are many things worse then over-chilled beer, but I can't think of any due to high volumes of correctly-chilled beer :P

Re:cool (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 10 years ago | (#9185158)

Over chilled beer is pretty hard to do. Winterizing my cycle one year I had some brews. It was pretty cold in the garage and the beers kept tasting better and better. They must've been pretty cold since my throat was so sore it made it difficult to swallow anything for a couple of days after. I figure the beer was so cold it froze my pipes! It was worth it though as those were the best tasting beers of my life.

grawk (107524) | more than 10 years ago | (#9184212)

Ok, I'd understand how it was cool if the peltier cooler from the fridge was part of the cooling system for the computer. But what's the big deal about putting a fridge in a box with a computer? It doesn't add functionality, it doesn't share anything sigificant in the way of function, and it's just plywood, taboot.

If the case used the same cooling for both the hardware and the beer, now that would be something interesting. As it is, it's just a 7th grade wood shop project.

Don't knock 7th grade woodshop projects (1)

zakezuke (229119) | more than 10 years ago | (#9185655)

As it is, it's just a 7th grade wood shop project.

Most of the stuff you can buy at Ikea can easily be duplicated by a 7th grade woodshop student. But people buy it anyway.

I consider my self very much an amateur when it comes to woodworking. In fact I would even go as far as saying that my skill level is that of a 7th grade woodshop student. Never the less pieces i've made made for sale or as gifts are still in service.

Don't knock the fundimentals.

and it's just plywood, taboot

Don't knock plywood. You're allowed to knock partical board, but not ply. People spend major bucks on things constructed with partical board. For prototyping nothing beats cheep pine ply. For a final product, oak ply is quite nice. If I were to do a wooden case, i'd use a very liberal amount of ply and limit my use of hardwood to segments that require it, such as a curved front panel.

Oh the fool! (1)

bravehamster (44836) | more than 10 years ago | (#9184213)
