THX-1138: The (Digitally Enhanced) Director's Cut

michael posted more than 9 years ago | from the bouncy-bubble-beverage dept.

Sci-Fi 275

StefanJ writes "This is either a marvelous Photoshop hoax or something really . . . cool? Sacreligious? Unnecessary? Reportedly, George Lucas has given his first commercially released movie, THX1138, a digital workover, enhancing backgrounds and altering scenes for more eye-appeal. Here are some comparisons of original and altered scenes. For those who haven't seen the film: Without giving too much away, it's about a working stiff living in a repressive underground bomb-shelter society. Emotion-suppressing drugs are mandatory; people shuffle from work to home, pausing to buy consumer goods along the way. (The goods aren't used for anything; you just feed them into a disposal unit after you get home. Making them keeps people busy . . .) If the drugs don't work, you can vent your spleen in a confession booth manned by a really bad A.I. It's really bleak, and sometimes ugly, but worth seeing. I hope the enhancements don't add too much color: The drab, sterile, white-on-white environment of the underground city is an important mood-setter. Consume more; be happy!"

Excellent, but I'm waiting for ... (4, Interesting)

Cy Guy (56083) | more than 9 years ago | (#9641105)

As far as first films by future 'masters' is concerned. I'd rather wait for the digitally enhanced version of John Carpenter's Dark Star [amazon.com] to be made and released. The existing DVD [amazon.com] already has a Director's cut included (this might be the un-enhanced student version though, I've only seen the movie on cable).

I love that film, though I always thought it was a bit long. Is there going to be a more carefully edited version available? I'm not sure which of the versions you mentioned I've seen. Whatever gets shown on UK TV every 7 years.

I think the short version is the student version. The studio made him pad it out to feature length for release. The orginal short version is the one he is happiest with.

If he's busy working on THX, then that means people are thinking independently on what to do on Episode 3.

Everytime george wasn't in command, we got decent films.

And we'd all rather him be busy on a less liked film (sorry THX fans...) or "More American Graffiti" (Sorry, you one MAG fan...)

Follow the imdb link [imdb.com] in the story : it's a movie Lucas made in 1971 which is about an over-protective future society.
now, thx1138 himself is the hero of this story, now, "be happy" ;)

From that IMDB page: Recommendations If you like this title, we also recommend... Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) Does it recommend people see this so they'll like THX-1138 more or something? Ingenious logic, people at IMDB!

I saw this move on TV back in the early 80's. I just remember that the movie was boring and pointless. Being a Star Wars fan at the time (and still am), I was just dying to see the first movie from the mighty Lucas.

Boy was I disappointed. That was one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. I think that calling it "decent" would be too kind.

I think that it would be a tie between "THX-1138" and "Desparate Living!" If you do not know what "Desparate Living" is, consider yourself lucky.

Re:Brave New World? (3, Interesting)

Silverlock (36154) | more than 9 years ago | (#9641389)

While I agree that THX-1138 is obviously inspired by Brave New World, I think calling it a "ripoff" is a bit harsh. That implies that he just ganked the plot and made a few bucks. What it is, is a reworking of some of the same themes within a different medium. That's perfectly legitimate and valuable in many cases.

THX-1138 is also one of a depressingly few science fiction movies that isn't watered-down drivel with some special effects thrown in. I highly recommend it.

Re:Brave New World? (1)

AndroidCat (229562) | more than 9 years ago | (#9641531)

And the RPG Paranoia probably gets a lot from THX-1138. (Or maybe Logan's Run. :) If people couldn't take a basic idea and add their own interpretation, we might as well pack it in.

A Silverlock defending the commonwealth of ideas made me smile.

Re:Brave New World? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9641390)

Many (most, all) movies use the plot from earlier successful literature. Sometimes these movies suck, sometimes they are very good.

Judge the work for what it is. Or are you just trying to appear smart by realizing THX uses a lot of the ideas in Brave New World? Thought so - didn't work.

Lucas has lost it... (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9641213)

This is yet more proof that George has lost his touch as a director. The man seems completely reliant upon special effects to sell movies now. The back-end motivation seems to be: Who cares if it sucks, the special effects will make up for that.

The LoTR movies prove that special effects and good directing can coexist in a movie. The Star Wars prequals prove that you can sell movies and merchandise on special effects alone... I guess this is historical fact to game players; look at how many games sold well on eye candy alone.

So What? (2, Interesting)

Walrus99 (543380) | more than 9 years ago | (#9641232)

Big deal. THX has to be the most boring Sci-Fi movie ever made. Its even more boring than watching a guy race robots on an empty ship in "Silent Running." Don't see THX expecting the pacing and excitement of the first Star Wars. Its just people shuffling around in bad clothes and having pointless conversations. If I want to see that I can go to the mall on weekdays and watch old people.

Re:So What? (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9641424)

I happen to disagree with your assesment of both films. It's just an opinion. I would say it would be more accurate to say that the impact of both films lies less in the action and more in the character development. If you are a fan of what passes for sci-fi these days (action films) you will find little appeal in THX or Silent Running.

Re:So What? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#9641658)

SF does not translate well to live action film (with a few very notable exceptions). Animation is a bit better, but books remain the natural medium of science fiction.

Remastering of Movies (2, Insightful)

cualexander (576700) | more than 9 years ago | (#9641278)

When does it all end? I mean are we going to digitally enhance everything to death? While we're at it why not go back and redo every movie ever made. It seems like with DVDs these days you can go back and stick 5 hours of extras and 50 extra discs and call it a collectors edition and everyone scrambles to get it. I personally agree with the South Park creators on this one. Remastering is an exercise in futility. As Kyle said, "When an artist creates, whatever they create belongs to society". Thats my philosophy.

Lucas movies don't suffer from lack of visual appeal. They suffer from poor direction (with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions, American Graffiti is the only one that comes to mind). The best Lucas films are the ones where he doesn't direct. He should really stay out of the director's chair and stick with writing and maybe producing.

A money grubbing bastard. I can't stand him. I used to like the old star wars movies... I really did. Then, the remastered versions came out and I was all excited... and then, the action figures, and the shirts, and the toys. They all came. I saw him for what he really was. The illusion was lifted from my eyes and I saw him for what he really is. A fat slob. I fat slob who wants people to worship the very ground he walks on because of his "wonderfully original" story that he entirely ripped off.

And then... the new movies came out. I refused to watch them at the theatres. George Lucas doesn't deserve my money. No, not now. And so I downloaded it, and I watched it... and it was crap. I passed judgement upon it as soon as I saw Jar Jar Bings.

Now this. Another shameless remake of a movie that didn't need to be done. I am apalled. I am sickened.

Stop buying the star wars books! Stop buying/watching his movies! For the love of god, people! Wake up and see him for what he is!
