Dunst Demands Asset Reduction For Spider-Man 2 Videogame

simoniker posted about 10 years ago | from the too-much-is-too-much dept.

Movies 90

Thanks to IOL.ie for its article discussing actress Kirsten Dunst's issues in approving her videogame likeness for Activision's Spider-Man 2 game. According to the lengthy news story, "The actress was asked to give her approval for the sequel's new merchandise and had to chastise the game's saucy creators." Although the Treyarch-developed Xbox/PS2/GameCube game has been well-received, certain dimensional inaccuracies were less appreciated by Ms.Dunst, as she explains, regarding her character Mary Jane Watson: "I got to approve the video game, the way she looks. They made her boobs gigantic. I was like, 'Tone down the boobs, please!' It was a little ridiculous."

One of the recent episodes of the TV show x-play showed some ridiculous examples of physical modeling and costuming in video games. Many characters had huge breasts that must have contained helium bladders to keep them upright, plus a titanium support structure built into their costume. They reminded me of Frank Frazetta's cover illustrations for Conan the Barbarian.

And this is supposed to be a bad thing? (1)

I think it's gotten a little out of hand personally. Funny thing is I have heard at least two other actresses (I'm pretty sure the female lead in the recent bond game was one) make the same complaint as dunst. Speaking as a male, i'd prefer to see something a little more, er, realistic. Game modelers are a little eccentric though.

For example, a game about a guy who has gotten bitten by a radioactive spider and thus gained superpowers.

Who wants their in-game model to make them look like they have small tits? That's like being a male porn star whose likeness is used in a sex game and have your virtual action figure end up with a dong 50% larger than yours. It's just going to make you look played out...

Re:And this is supposed to be a bad thing? (1)

Just 50% larger?

Re:And this is supposed to be a bad thing? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 years ago | (#9748458)

A little more realistic would mean that the video game version of Dunst would be walking around playing soccer with her boobs in the game. If I were her I'd be happy with the "augment." She sags like a 50 year old mother of 10.

I can't expect the average lonely pathetic geek to understand, but to any guy who actually HAS CONTACT WITH FEMALES, this sort of ridiculous exagerration is an embarassment to me as a gamer.

I keep wanting my girlfriend to take an interest in video games, and then little touches like those just make gaming on a whole look like a booy's club. So why WOULD she take an interest in oggling polygonal tits?

That wasn't really funny at all. That was incredibly imature. Giving someone you have never met such a widely-viewed flaming just because they shared an opinion of theirs only makes the PA guys look even more like total cocks.

I'm sorry, but you should really not be calling people "whores" because they made fun of your precious imaginary character. That one comic lost them a lot of respect, and I hope I'm not the only one who feels that way.

This really shouldn't have to be said, but:

COMICS are not SERIOUS.

Do you really believe that George Carlin supports public castration for anyone who waits at an intersection and waves him through? It's comic hyperbole and it's supposed to be funny. Lighten up.

If you don't enjoy it, fine. But that doesn't make the comics bad people.

I applaud dunst for standing up and requiring some normality in video games, especially with a character portraying herself.

Re:I'm so conflicted.... (2, Insightful)

Dutchmaan (442553) | about 10 years ago | (#9737044)

"especially with a character portraying herself."

Actually it's herself portraying a character.. The character shouldn't be a representation of her but rather she a representation of the character and hence have no say in how others portray the same character.

Re:I'm so conflicted.... (2, Interesting)

gamgee5273 (410326) | about 10 years ago | (#9737164)

Ahhh... but isn't the video character portraying Dunst portraying Mary Jane? Therefore, in this case, the character would be portraying the actor, not vice-versa.

Re:I'm so conflicted.... (1)

be951 (772934) | about 10 years ago | (#9738385)

It has nothing to do with the character. The issue is that her likeness is being used in the game. Given that the game is tied in with the movie, one might have trouble trying to separate the character from the actress playing her, at least as far as likeness rights go, but IANAL.

Re:I'm so conflicted.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 years ago | (#9737018)

Um, ok I understand that it was a license of a movie, but it is also a comicbook character. In fact, she may not know this, but it was a comic book character first.

Have her go pick up a comic book from the last 10 years, and then look at the size of most of the female characters chests.

Re:*Smack* (1)

crashnbur (127738) | about 10 years ago | (#9740673)

Other female comic book characters' breasts don't matter. Mary Jane Watson's breasts are what matter. And besides, if the character is made in her likeness and her contract gives her authority to "tone down the boobs", then I say let her have it.

Note to all future makers of Spider-Man games: do whatever you have to do to make the character inappopriate enough to incite a visit from Kirsten. The only thing better than playing with her likeness is meeting the real thing!

antime (739998) | about 10 years ago | (#9737093)

Article? Discussing? simoniker must have included the wrong link in the summary..

Anyway, I do think it's a bit annoying that developers have to put huge tits on everything. I get a feeling they think that no matter what shit they release, put some big tits in the ads and on all the female characters and people will still buy it.

Re:What article? (1)

I get a feeling they think that no matter what shit they release, put some big tits in the ads and on all the female characters and people will still buy it.

Yup, I think that's a fair assessment.

Remember Battlecruiser 3kAD (or whatever it was called)? You know, the freeform "Elite meets Star Trek" thing that sank without trace after years of hype, when everyone involved suddenly realised that they were never going to get enough bugs out to make it playable.

Remember the ad campaign, though? IIRC it featured a leggy blonde in skimpy leather, sitting down with her legs open wide, hugging a copy of the game box to her crotch.

To this day I haven't heard a convincing explanation of what was going on in the mind of the guy who designed that ad. Er... I mean, okay, I can guess, but I don't know why he thought it was going to make up for the barrage of negative publicity.

Re:What article? (1)

Ya. I played it there. It is pretty cool, though I think it was far from done. They only had two playable characters and the fighting was nothing to get over-excited about.

The real cool thing was you could break limbs and then the other character couldn't use them anymore. Other than that, it was nothing special.

The new Mortal Kombat game looked really cool though. Basically it is to include everything they wanted Deadly Alliance to have and then some.

It seems a little silly for her to complain about computer games focusing on her breasts when her entire movie career has done the same... I'm sure everyone remembers that infamous Spiderman scene in the rain (to name just one).

I can't help but feel she just wants some more attention. Same with her recent comments about killing spidey off...

Re:Seems a little silly (2, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | about 10 years ago | (#9738123)

Her entire acting career?

You're aware she was in a few movies before Spiderman, right?

Like "Interview with the Vampire" when she was maybe nine, twelve years old. I can't be bothered to look up how old she was, but that movie certainly didn't focus on her breasts. I don't know her filmography, but you could look it up on IMDB if you're that interested.

Anyway...the "infamous" scene from the first Spiderman movie doesn't really have anything that risque. She was in the rain...yup, wet t-shirt contest, but it's not that (bad/good). Watch it again, you'll see what I mean. It's really a very short sequence with her "bouncing" in the rain. Like two seconds. Very disappointing ;)

Watch the credits on "The Man Show" to see something more interesting.

The rain scene is only significant if you're desperate enough to make so much out of such a short insignificant scene.

Talk about desperate.

But hey, maybe the game buying public is made up of guys like you, in which case I guess they are making the smart choice in displaying ridiculously big breasts on all female characters.

Personally, if I want to see tits, I pop in a porno. Otherwise, let's keep things a little more sane!

Re:Seems a little silly (1)

antin (185674) | about 10 years ago | (#9746486)

One example from one movie. I had assumed that people could fill in the rest from their experience, rather than require me to provide a detailed list of every single movie and scene she may ever have been in.

I have always been impressed with the ability of people (generally argumentative idiots) to focus very narrowly on one particular point or sentence and ignore everything else.

Check IMDB for her recent movie history, or just think back on the movie trailers you have seen for her - she has done a lot of movies where I doubt she was cast for her acting abilities.

Of course all those norminations for best actress must be just around the corner right?

Why not cut to the chase? (4, Funny)

teamhasnoi (554944) | about 10 years ago | (#9737879)

How about a game where you *ARE* breasts? You could shoot breast milk at the bad guys (underwire bras perhaps?), get powerups to become huge and mesmerize the enemy, crush your opponents underneath with your 'bounce attack' and use your surroundings (the beach, strip bar, plastic surgeon's office) to camouflage yourself.

Enemies could include a newborn (your life force is draining!), middle school boys (the devious purple nurple!), and Fundies (...harlot! Bind those objects of Satan!)

I think the solution to this 'breast obsession' is to make all game devs watch 'Showgirls' at least 20 times. I saw it once and was sick of tits for at least 2-3 hours.

Both Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst did their own voices for the game [imdb.com] , and Tobey Maguire is just awful. No emotion whatsoever, just lame wooden jokes for your grandmother.

The game also features the voice of Reno 911!'s Niecy Nash [imdb.com] which is pretty neat for anyone who gives a crap.

Is not a quake 3 paul steed model to put in few words.

I think this could qualify a shameless plug by dunst to say "hey look Im there! and that my voice" curious thing is it doesnt sound like her her at all while peter parker/spiderman was played by an immitator that sounds EXACTLY like Tobey Mcguire. I worked on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer game, and even though Sarah Michelle Gellar wouldn't do voice work, she still had nine yards of harpy silliness about her in game model. We modelled no less then 6 versions, and the only one she would approve looked like a 12 year old boy-not suprising, considering her current "starve myself into oblivion" state. We eventually got the publisher to nix her veto power, and released the game with a bit more stylized version: not over the top, but not ironing board either.

The bigger the breasts of her character, the more money she will make on game sales.

Do you think that any of the DOA games would have sold a fraction of the copies they have if all of the dimensions were accurate to real life women?

it depends really... by doing doa the way they did, they essentially marketed themselves out of the female market, which may not be huge itself, but a volleyball game is the type of game girls might play.

Breasts should be the least of her worries... (1)

She should have gone and asked them make her teeth look more normal in the movie, never mind the game.
